Solution You bought the TV, you control the TV, you own the glass. A full webOS dashboard for rooted LG TVs.
Alongside a bunch of open-source contributors, I've recently been working on an extensive open-source dashboard for rooted LG webOS TVs.
This was originally motivated by the recent scrutiny around LG's cloud telemetry and smart TV privacy practices. The whole point for me was to take full control of my TV, including integrating it properly with my local-first smart home platform (Home Assistant)
Instead of the exposing TV data to the manufacturer, I now expose it locally and use it myself. I'm using that data for useful smart home automations, including speaker on/off automations and TV notifications such as "washing machine finished".
It runs on the TV, so there's no external server, cloud dependency, and no internet connection required for normal operation.
The main features:
- Full remote control from a browser (or Home Assistant), including power, volume, inputs, navigation and apps
- App management: install/remove apps and clean up unwanted home-screen tiles
- OLED panel care: panel hours, Pixel Refresher controls, maintenance counters and screen-protection settings (including the ones only possible via the service menu)
- Privacy controls: Inspect and control various data collection, advertising and content-recognition settings
- Service menu access without needing a service remote
- Custom screensavers with clocks, visual effects and live TV telemetry
- On-TV dashboard that can be used directly with the normal LG remote
- MQTT / Home Assistant integration with automatic device discovery
- Automatic updates with version history and rollback
And a bunch of advanced goodies
- Hardware telemetry: SoC temperature, CPU/per-core load, GPU clock, memory, swap and network statistics
- OLED diagnostics: panel information, cell ID, TCON firmware, GSR events and other panel-level information
- HDMI diagnostics: HDMI 2.1 link information, raw signal data, HDR/SDR/Dolby Vision state and input status
- Storage diagnostics: eMMC wear and filesystem information
- Process inspection: see what webOS is actually running in the background
- Remote diagnostics: remote model/battery information and other hardware/software details
- Local ad/telemetry blocking: optionally block selected LG services directly on the TV
It has been tested across a range of webOS versions and hardware so far, from webOS 3.4 through webOS 25, including the B7, B8, C8, C9, C1, C2, B4, G4 and C5.
There are a lot of differences between webOS generations so I can't guarantee it will work on all models, but If you have a rooted LG TV, I'd be interested in reports from other models and versions.
The project is specifically aimed at TVs that are already rooted. It doesn't require modifying the read-only root filesystem.
Update (26th September 2026): The app is now called Glasshouse and has LOADS of new features.

Question Does webOS support UVC Webcams?
I am developing a video calling app which is already in the testing phase for Android TV and I was wondering if webOS supports UVC Webcams so I could port the app over, users can connect a USB UVC webcam to be able to use the app.

Question An app suddenly appeared on my LG webOS TV, and I don't remember installing it. Am I tripping?
I just noticed a new app on my webOS TV, but I genuinely don't remember opening the LG Content Store or downloading anything recently. It just appeared out of nowhere.
Is this similar to the Microsoft Copilot incident a few months ago, or am I wrong? Has anyone else experienced this?
OS: webOS 25

Issue GamersNexus must have struck a nerve, LG added 2 new mandatory license agreements
I've been watching this entire LG WebOS mess, especially after GamersNexus broke the story.
I have an LG Smart TV with the latest WebOS.
Lo and behold this morning I turn on the TV, and it's presenting 2 new mandatory licenses that you must accept to gain full access to the TV. Not optional ones like the others.
First up, new license for Automatic Content Recognition (ACR). They are going to capture everything and phone it home. And this includes scanning your network.
Next, they've now added a voice capture license where they state they will capture audio and phone it home.
So, LG of course was full of it, when they denied everything GamersNexus reported. They just needed time to update the WebOS code and licenses agreements to push an update to force the customers to accept what GamersNexus already reported they were doing.
Taking mine 100% off the net.

What's the point in buying a new tv, if you gotta go through so many dam obstacles to control it , especially with a remote that has limited functions. If the remote comes with the TV you kinda expect for it to control all necessary functions.very disatisfied with this purchase, never recommend it

I made a Retro TV app for LG webOS TVs (50s-2000s)
I’ve been working on a little project to bring [MyRetroTVs](https://www.myretrotvs.com/) to LG webOS TVs!
It’s a launcher that lets you watch TV from the 50s through to the 2000s, with a retro TV showroom for choosing decades and proper Magic Remote support.
I’ve also added features like channel switching, shared settings across decades, fullscreen playback, visual effects, and the ability to resume where you left off.
It’s currently designed for LG TVs and has been tested on webOS 9.2.2.
Still a work in progress, but I thought I’d share it in case anyone else wants to give it a try!
Note: there is a fullscreen with tv frame option for ultimate immersion but don’t have it on for too long to prevent burn-in

Credit to Joey Cato for creating the original MyRetroTVs websites!

Permanent root for LG webos 5 (Tested on my CX)
so after a lot of trial and error I finally got permanent root on my LG CX (webOS 5.6.2) and decided to pack the whole thing so other ppl can use it.
basically it boots rooted by itself, no pc needed once its set up. the exploit is James McVay's work, all credit to him (already messaged him about it). what I built is the chain around it: root ssh, a small daemon and a tiny homebrew store with a dev mode toggle that never expires
its beta and only certified on my CX, but it should work on other webos 5 TVs too (untested tho). nothing signed gets touched so its pretty safe and fully reversible.
one-click is here: https://github.com/natxobsd/lg-webos5-root
lmk if it works on other models.
Edit: I fixed the hidden prompt in the script. Pull the latest version and try again, it should only ask once now.

Glasshouse removes apps
When installning glasshouse on a rooted CX. I cannot access the apps any more after rebooting: the home button is dead. Tried reinstall but no luck. The root went fine (slopbro)
Anyone experienced this, and have a fix?

AV Overlay: on-screen receiver volume and audio/video info bar for rooted LG TVs with a Yamaha receiver (eARC)
A homebrew app I've been working on, a fork of Nikolay1243's Webos-EARC-Volume-Overlay. With a rooted LG TV sending audio over eARC to a Yamaha receiver, the TV shows almost nothing about what the receiver is doing. This shows it.
What it shows
- Volume popup read from the receiver (half-steps, mute)
- Info bar: sound program, source and app, the audio format the receiver reports, Plex/Jellyfin stream details, video format and HDR/Dolby Vision
- Per-app sound programs for the receiver, including Apple TV apps
- Status and setup pages on the TV; the watcher can also run in Docker
- Android app too (https://imgur.com/a/a1lSGl1)
With an Apple TV
The Apple TV doesn't tell the TV which app is playing, so Home Assistant's Apple TV integration sends the app name to the overlay (a small rest_command automation, YAML in the repo). The overlay uses it to pick the receiver's sound program per app. My rules:
| App on the Apple TV | Receiver sound program |
|---|---|
| Spotify, TIDAL | 5ch Stereo |
| Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video, Stan, Infuse, Plex, YouTube | Straight |
| anything else | Surround Decoder (Neo:6 Cinema) |
- The info bar shows the app as "Netflix on Apple TV" (or "Netflix on LG TV" for the TV's own apps).
- For Infuse it also shows the Plex stream behind it: codec, channels, bitrate, direct play.
- The Apple TV decodes audio itself and sends PCM, so the receiver can't report a channel count. Channels only show for Plex streams.
- Limit: the YouTube tvOS app often doesn't report now-playing to Home Assistant, so it may not be detected.
Status
- Tested on one setup only: an LG C2 (OLED65C2PSC, webOS 11.2.0) with a Yamaha RX-V485 and one Apple TV.
- The web app is plain ES5, so webOS 4+ sets should be fine in theory, but I haven't tried them.
- Submitted to the Homebrew Channel app list and pending review. Until then it installs from the release tarball or Docker.
- Built with Claude Code (an AI coding agent); I reviewed the code and tested it on my own TV.

Happy to answer questions, especially about other webOS versions or receivers.
