[D] Announcing the Webnovel Directory — Give us your recommendations!

There's a lot of new and little known webfiction being posted to this subreddit — which is great; the scene needs more eyes on the smaller players. But for someone new to webfiction, or only versed in a particular subscene, there's sure to be big names they've never heard of.

So, we're announcing a web fiction directory: a subreddit wiki to collate quality webfiction and reviews. It should be organized to make finding the best of the best as easy as possible, and it should reflect the opinions of the community.

After some thought, we've come up with a system, and all you have to do is leave a post below with as many recommendations or reviews as you care to provide. Two things to keep in mind:

  1. a recommendation is as simple as saying "I recommend this." Nothing more to it. You should recommend stories you like even if they're already on the list.

  2. a review is a rating (0-5 stars, halfstars allowed), and an explanation of why you think the story deserves that rating. At least a sentence or two, but at least a paragraph is ideal. Try not to just describe the story's plot (that's what descriptions are for!), but actually tell what it does well and what you like about it.

  3. you can also give a disrecommendation, effectively downvoting the story.

Ideally, ratings should make use of the entire range offered; the average rating should be 2.5 stars, not 4 stars. Something like this should be kept in mind:

  • 5.0 - Sublime
  • 4.5 - Excellent
  • 4.0 - Great
  • 3.5 - Very Good
  • 3.0 - Good
  • 2.5 - Mixed
  • 2.0 - Disappointing
  • 1.5 - Bad
  • 1.0 - Embarrassing
  • 0.5 - Atrocious

Here's an example:

I recommend Worth the Candle, The Flower That Bloomed Nowhere, and Entirely Presenting You. I disrecommend Mother of Learning and Chrysalis.

I rate The New Humans 3.5/5 stars. It has excellent, almost literary prose, and its the character work is moving. While the plot takes a few surprising turns, it takes a while for it to really get going (it's somewhat meandering in the beginning). The setting is unique (rural superheroes in 1960s australia??), and the author makes great strides toward realism. The metaphysics of powers is unlike any other super serial out there.

The directory itself has a few designs:

  • if a story is recommended by anyone, it will be in the directory.
  • stories with reviews are listed in a category above stories with no reviews (i.e. only recommendations)
  • sorting works like this: total number of a stars plus half net recommendations (so each recommendation is effectively half a star), divided by the total number of reviews, laplace smoothed to 2.5/5. This means that stories with better averages and more recommendations rank higher, but stories with a small number of high reviews don't shoot up to the top, and adding a recommendations never decreases a story's score.

Please, recommend all your favorite webnovels below. We'd really like this directory to become something comprehensive.

[DISC] Why harem always ruin everything

Why many webnovel who get interesting premise or good story always forcefully insert some harem or dry joke?

what's wrong with the writer head? i'm not saying harem trope was bad but c'mon. is this some cultural thing or sense of obligation?

[IP] (Re:KENSEI) After years of writing webnovels, I finally just put all my guilty pleasures into one story

Hey! I’m Katsuhito. I’ve been writing webnovels for a few years now, mostly over on Honeyfeed, and last year I was lucky enough to become a finalist in the MAL x KADOKAWA writing contest.
For my newest story though, I decided not to overthink it 😂 I basically took all the stuff I unapologetically love in fantasy/isekai LNs and threw it into one story with the goal of making it as fun to write (and hopefully read) as possible.
So I ended up with Re:Kensei, about a former kendo prodigy reincarnated into a world where magic and Skills have made actual swordsmanship obsolete. He awakens as the supposedly useless Swordsman class and, being the sword nerd that he is, is basically the only person thrilled about it.
Sword fights, magic academy, progression, rivals, comedy, romance, cute girls — you get the idea 😂
I also decided to try Royal Road for the first time with this one, and I’ve been having a ton of fun with it so far.
If that sounds like your kind of thing, here it is:

Re:Kensei – Reborn in a World That Abandoned Swordsmanship

[DISC] Help find Chinese webnovel where MC has an SSS-rank talent that lets him reduce any number on his status panel by 1

I'm trying to identify a Chinese webnovel I came across through an AI-narrated YouTube video. I don't know the original title, and the English names below may be inaccurate because they were taken from the narration.

Here is video Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eFg-Rcen8yc&t=15204s

Here's what I remember about the plot:

  • The protagonist's name sounds like Yin Shi / Yin Xi / Yinshi (not sure of the exact spelling).
  • He is a transmigrator living in a world where a system has turned reality into a game-like environment. People awaken special talents and level up.
  • The MC awakens an SSS-rank talent called something like "Panel Correction." It allows him to decrease any numerical value on his status panel by 1, with a limit of 10 uses per day.
  • He discovers a loophole: he can level up, gain the stats from levelling, and then reduce his level back to 0 without losing the stats he gained. He can repeat this process, effectively accumulating the stats of a high-level character while remaining at level 0. However, he still needs the EXP required to reach level 1 each time he levels up.
  • An early antagonist is apparently named Tang Chun / Tang Chen. He is the president of the local Awakened Alliance and is connected to a past incident in which the protagonist's parents were abandoned and presumed killed during a mission.
  • The protagonist teams up with another character whose name sounds like Jang Shauo / Jiang Xiaowo. They form a squad and achieve major milestones, including being the first to clear a secret realm called Misty Forest and rescuing the Princess of Atlantis in another secret realm.
  • The story involves revenge, a life-or-death duel with Tang Chun/Chen, and a second awakening ceremony in which the other character awakens the Goddess of Thunder.

I watched a long YouTube narration of the story, but unfortunately, I don't have a verified Chinese title.

Does anyone recognize this novel?

Askin LLM agents mostly provided hallucinated titles. The above character names/spellings are discovered via Gemini AI.

[DISC] How do you feel about images in webnovels?

Hi, I am currently writing and drawing a webtoon. However, I realized it would take too long to complete, so I'd like to switch to mostly text (so a webnovel).

Since I've already made quite a lot of drawings, I'd like to insert a few images here and there in the chapters.

But I rarely see images in webnovels. Is it just because it's easier for authors to just write and not draw, or are there other reasons (like maybe images don't display properly on mobile)?

As a reader, would you mind having a few pictures in certain chapters? or does it break the flow of reading?

Could you also please recommend a few sites that may be interested in novels with images? (maybe they focus on it, or are just interested in this kind of content). Another thread recommended scribblehub.com but it's 8 years old.

Thanks!

[Disc]looking for a specific romantasy trope

[Disc] Does the presence of LGBTQ+ content a must or are people simply sharing more about it because it is no longer taboo than many decades ago?

I want to write a web novel. As I was searching for a good platform for my project, the term LGBTQ+ just kept popping out every so often.

I'm not good with romance. In which case, whether it is LGBTQ+ or straight, I doubt I'd write any romance in it.

The story is slightly sci-fi, but it's really an original story and an homage to my favorite Japanese super hero franchises and their creators. So more action focus, rather than romance. Maybe a bit niche and targeted toward a specific community. Even then, I'd like for my story to not hook only the fans of the genre.

When I look at reviews of platforms (pros and cons, prominent genres) and it is underlined to be LGBTQ+ friendly or not, it makes uncertain about using said platform.

[IP] The Realm That Called Us [Non-LitRPG Progression Fantasy]

Hey everyone! I'm Mystery X, and I'd like to share my webnovel, The Realm That Called Us.

“You were called because this world needs heroes who can still become human after carrying the weight of gods.”

Two strangers. Two completely different personalities. Somehow, they work surprisingly well together.

Raiden and Asuna are pulled from Earth when a blue-lit sea swallows their cruise ship. They wake up on the shores of Astald, where the Queen of Spirits gives them two legendary artifacts and tells them their arrival wasn't an accident.

Then they discover something unsettling.

Astald's oldest legends already describe them.

The Star Blade Hero.
The Divine Mage.

The descriptions match Raiden and Asuna almost perfectly even though those legends were written long before they arrived.

And things aren't going according to the story.

Raiden possesses a legendary weapon that actively rejects him.

Asuna can wield divine magic, but using it tears her body apart.

Aina, an elven warrior running from her family's disgraced legacy, discovers historical records that contradict everything Astald believes about its past.

Meanwhile, corrupted mana is spreading across the land.

The three of them will have to explore dungeons, train their abilities, uncover the world's history, and figure out why their arrival was predicted centuries ago.

Because they weren't simply summoned to fulfill a prophecy.

They were dropped into a story that someone tampered with.

Story Details

  • Genre: Non-LitRPG Progression Fantasy / Isekai
  • Protagonists: Dual leads + expanding group dynamic
  • Progression: Slow-burn magic and ability growth
  • Focus: Mystery, exploration, lore, character development
  • Setting: Original fantasy world
  • LitRPG elements: None

If you enjoy progression fantasy without stats/screens, mysterious prophecies, dungeon exploration, gradual power growth, and fantasy mysteries that unfold over time, you might enjoy it.

[DISC] The Villain Wants to Live.

I am currently reading ch84 and I find Sylvia so hypocritical. I understand that she's upset that the one she likes killed her mom. However, there is a lot of difference between how she acted towards Epherene's father's death, who was led to death by the same dude. Like yeah, the students here who mostly belong to noble families have a feud with the Ylvine Family. Surprise, Surprise.

Like, she didn't even show empathy towards her classmate's father's death and on top of that wanted to use the information to get the relationship between Iffy and Deculien, just so she can confirm that he doesn't have an affair going on.

Like, I just can't bring myself to like this character. I am really hoping for some character development because every scene she's in is kinda pissing me off.

Yes, I do understand that her mother's death is much more impactful to her and that she is written as a self centered character from the start, and that's exactly why I don't like her and am waiting for some character development.

[DISC] Has anyone read millennium witch.

I'm at ch 249 and I don't understand why author basically butchered this novel?

The mc didn't solve a single single mystery about the old world. We have. No idea what the dream fog is, what on the moon, who and what is the witch of the end is, what cause the world to end, how he reincarnated, how is he immortal or what abhorrent mana is. She left to the other world and now there less than 50ch left and we haven't met a single disciple, we know absolutely nothing about the gods or whether Rosalind is dead or not. How is he gonna wrap this in 50ch i don't know. Normally I would drop this now because I can sense it's gonna have a horrible end but the start of the novel was so good I'll power trough it.

[IP] Keitai-novel/space opera/romance style story

Hey! I'm trying out a new format to write my story, I was really inspired by old keitai-novels and wondered what it could look like on modern phones.
I'm really curious what you guys think about the format: https://keitailog.net/reader?story=9e080d54-9d92-455e-9e08-4d72d9f3ae87

The story itself is a bit crazy: it's a scifi/space opera about idol culture.

Note: the Keitai-style only really starts in season 1, the prologue is still quite classic.

Also, if anyone would also be interested to publish their own Keitai-like stories on the page, please let me know! Would love to have some people try it out

[IP] Foresight [LitRPG / Progression Fantasy]

Hey everyone! Here's the comedic LitRPG story I've poured my heart, soul, and fragile sense of self into for the last couple of months. Please check it out if it interests you at all (any and all critique welcome), and let me know what you think of the cover! I commissioned my artist friend to make it, and I kinda adore it.

Foresight

On his Coming of Age day, Corin Vess was appraised with 'Foresight', an {Epic} Innate Ability - and it was an epic failure. Really, the only punch he ever accurately foresaw was becoming a punchline: the Guild's biggest joke, the F-rank adventurer with an Epic ability that did absolutely nothing, two years running (and no doubt counting).

Then one day, he inexplicably receives a vision of the Turn - the world's weekly small-to-catastrophic changes - before it happens. Turns out his Innate was never about predicting combat at all - it was about seeing into exactly where he wasn't supposed to. Corin is forced to act fast to exploit the visions, all the while trying to keep his power a secret from those around him, and whatever's looming above him.

Like most things in his life, he generally fails at both.

What to expect:

- Daily chapters for a month, then settling into five chapters a week (Monday to Friday)

- Weak to strong, earned-OP MC

- LitRPG stat sheets, progression, and comedy

- A delightful juxtaposition of humor and brutality / laughter and slaughter <3

[IP] Murim's Archmage (Progression Fantasy)

Hi, everyone! Here is the web novel I wrote. Please check it out if you're interested!

The story is an Eastern Murim x Western Magic Fantasy. I wrote this because I enjoy reading Murim stories, both manhwa and web novels, as well as High Fantasy stories. While I do enjoy Murim stories, I’ve always felt a bit dissatisfied with how small their worlds can be, and how most, if not all, of those works tend to focus mainly on conflicts between sects and martial clans.

This work is my attempt to blend the Murim (Eastern Martial Arts) genre with Western Magic Fantasy. It is also my first ever work as a writer.

Below is the synopsis:

Cheon Hwi was the only son and heir of the Cheon Clan, a martial arts family based in Anhui Province. Since he was young, he always believed that he would succeed his father and become the next Patriarch of the Clan, so he threw himself into relentless training.

Alas, even after years of training, his martial arts skills did not develop properly. No matter how hard he trained, his inner energy simply could not flow properly.

Fate came when he was twelve years old. The Clan's Elders were worried that Hwi was too weak to succeed his father, so some of them nominated Cheon Seolhwa, a ten-year-old girl from the branch family and also Cheon Hwi's cousin, to replace him as the heir of the Clan. Some of the Elders agreed, while others disagreed, so they decided to hold a duel between Cheon Hwi and Cheon Seolhwa. The winner would become the heir of the Clan.

Cheon Seolhwa was the Clan's absolute genius in martial arts. Cheon Hwi had no chance of winning, but he still fought. At the end of the duel, in a desperate attempt to win, Cheon Hwi used the unknown energy stored in his heart and managed to launch a counterattack. However, his body fell to the ground, and blood came out of all his orifices.

While he was on the brink of death, a Western mage appeared and saved his life. Afterward, the mage told him that what he had used was mana.

So it began. Now that he knew where his talent lay, he abandoned the path of martial arts and walked down a completely new path.

Magic.

Currently, 23 chapters and 39K+ words have been published, and I update daily.

[IP] For those of you looking for a classic LITRPG Sword Art Online style read

If you're looking for a classic 'stuck in an MMORPG read', check out my novel New Game. Inspired by the games I grew up with: RuneScape, MapleStory, Skyrim, and, of course, D&D, I would love it if you could check it out (and maybe let me know what you think.)

https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/161539/new-game-litrpg

Sebastian is just a fifteen year old boy trying to pass his GCSEs. When his best friends Alister and Sophia sign the three of them up to beta test a new gaming system that is supposed to be more advanced than VR itself, Sebastian couldn't be more excited. But they soon find that this new gaming technology is more than just VR. The three of them are frozen in time, with machines that have transported them into a medieval MMORPG. Oh, there's also another thing: if you die in the game, you die in real life.

[DISC] preferred webnovel reading app

I'm looking for a new app where I can download and read webnovels. Ideally it supports Novelties/novel arrow, Wtr-Lab, and FuckNovelpia.

I'm currently running LNReader, but I can't use it anymore due to a huge library

What are some good alternatives?
