Visitors: Please Read Before Posting Hotel Questions

We are not travel agents. We do not know each hotel property, brand or rates. You need to do some research on your own. Seriously, all lazy hotel questions will be deleted.

Please remember: we’re locals, not travel agents or mind readers.

Contributors:Ā Please direct people here if they post hotel questions elsewhere. This (hopefully) will keep the endless ā€œWhere should I stay?ā€ posts from cluttering up the subreddit.

How to Get the Best Advice

To help you get the best advice possible, follow these steps:

Check Rates & Availability First:

Hotel prices in NYC change constantly and vary by season, availability, and demand. Before posting:

  • CheckĀ hotel booking sitesĀ (Booking, Expedia,Ā Hotels.com, etc.) and read the reviews
  • Check theĀ hotel’s official website

Keep in mind:

  • Rates spike during peak times (like winter holidays). Be realistic about your budget.
  • NYC hotel rooms are famously small. If you have a large group or need more space, consider suite-style hotels.
  • Parking is limited and very expensive.

Include Key Info in Your Post:

To get helpful replies, your postĀ must include:

  • BudgetĀ (USD per night). Words like expensive, or budget mean nothing to us -- use a dollar amount.
  • Dates or seasonĀ you’re visiting.
  • Preferred neighborhoods or attractionsĀ you want to be near.
  • Other preferencesĀ (family-friendly, quiet, walkable, etc.

Pro Tips:

Do a search on this sub. Plenty of suggestions and recommendations already here.

Research NYC neighborhoods first to narrow down your options. Midtown (34th–59th Streets) is the most popular with tourists for its proximity to attractions and subways. We’re happy to help once you’ve narrowed it down to a few areas or hotels.

In most cases, Airbnb and other short-term rentals are illegal in NYC and much of northern New Jersey. Stick to hotels or licensed rentals. If it sounds to good to be true, it probably is a scam.

Hotels inĀ Long Island City (Queens)Ā and parts ofĀ BrooklynĀ are often cheaper and only ~10 minutes from Manhattan by subway.

All areas in NYC with hotels are generally safe — they wouldn’t be built there otherwise.

If you’re looking toĀ save money by staying in New Jersey, remember to factor in theĀ extra cost and timeĀ for commuting into Manhattan. Transit fares, schedules, and delays can quickly add up.

We recently stayed at the Hyatt Place/Times Sq on 39th St and I highly recommend it! It was priced right! We loved having a king bed and a sofa in the room! It was in an easily walkable area to Times Square, empire st building, top of the rock etc! Best of all a free breakfast each morning!

Review of Fitzpatrick Grand Central https://www.fitzpatrickhotels.com/fitzpatrick-grand-central/: We live in the NYC suburbs and just celebrated our 35th anniversary with a 2 night stay to enjoy theater, museums, and watching the World Cup with our son. As a New Yorker, I haven't stayed at a NYC hotel for decades and drove myself crazy figuring out where to book so we could walk to shows. I kept reading reviews about slow elevators and indifferent staff. We ultimately decided to be near Grand Central to easily drop off and collect our luggage near Metro North. We had a wonderful stay at the Fitzpatrick GC. It's a small boutique hotel and the staff couldn't have been warmer or more efficient. We were shocked to come back from the theater to champagne on ice with glasses, complements of the hotel because of our anniversary. The room was clean, bed was comfy, shower was good pressure. It didn't seem to be a fancy business-oriented hotel that I've had while traveling for work, so I'm not evaluating that. But it was excellent for vacation travel. I've been to their Wheeltapper Irish bar/restaurant next door for after-work gatherings, and that's also great. (Their kitchen made the macrons that came with the champagne...delicious.) I highly recommend this hotel to international and U.S. visitors to NYC. It's a safe neighborhood, great location, lots of food options nearby, and also a very reasonable daily rate.

Hi everyone, I am going to NYC Easter weekend this April and have been stuck deciding on a place to stay.

I have been thinking about either booking the Roxy, Moxy in Chelsea, or Public. The last two seem to have some pretty cool modern amenities and great views. My max to spend per night would be about $370 for 4 nights.

I am only traveling by myself to see friends, I only really care about cleanliness lol, spaciousness is not really a concern for me.

Of these three, which would be the best option if I just wanted a nice clean place to sleep with transportation and a good selection of restaurants nearby?

I’ve been doing research on the best hotel we can afford for myself and my sister (40s) traveling with our mom (79) and niece (18, has never been to NY, this is a graduation trip for her). Prices are of course insane but I’ve done a lot of NY hotels for work and pleasure, just never for a mixed group like this. We want to do the ā€œusualsā€ such as Empire State etc but also just want to walk neighborhoods, etc. typically I avoid Times Square but the Knickerbocker Hotel looks actually affordable. I’m trying to figure out if I’m missing something other than the location— no complaints about the noise that I can see, and we don’t mind being there if it’s not disruptive like that.

Is it really as nice/historic as it looks? It seems like I should jump on this rate— close to $500/room per night— bc I haven’t found anything less than 600 min for a five star (or even a nice four star) hotel. These are nonrefundable so trying to do my due diligence for this two night stay.

Thank you!

2

u/williamprd0934 Apr 23 '26

You’re not missing anything obvious — the Knickerbocker Hotel is a pretty solid pick, especially at ~$500 right now.

It's historic, but not in a super old-school luxury way. It was fully redone not that long ago, so it feels more like a modern hotel in a historic building than a classic NYC grand hotel.

If you were going for a quieter, more ā€œneighborhoodā€ feel, I’d say look elsewhere, but for convenience and a short stay, it works. $500/n for that standing in Manhattan is probably a good deal, atm

First time visitors. We are trying to choose a hotel in midtown that is moderately priced, and narrowed it down to these 4 hotels:

Pestana Park Avenue

Park Terrace Hotel

Prince Kitano

Executive Hotel Le Soleil

All are roughly close to each other, so location isn’t really a deciding factor. We value room space, comfortable and clean rooms, and a decent view from our room.

Amenities like king bed, mini fridge, and hotel breakfast are nice but not deal breakers.

If anyone can personally recommend at least one of these hotels would be greatly appreciated. Bonus points if you’ve stayed at more than one of these and can recommend one over the other!

If Easy midtown/Bryant Park area is not the ideal area to stay for first time visitors and would recommend a better area in NYC to stay in please let me know!

Thanks!

I gifted my wife and her sister a short trip to NYC right before Christmas. It's from the 18th to the 23rd of December. Looking to spend around 2.000$ for all 5 nights. On booking.com I saw some options which fit the price and seem to be in good locations to explore the city:

  • 11 Howard
  • Made Hotel
  • Pestana Park Avenue
  • Moxy NYC Chelsea
  • The Cloud One

Any opinions on these or are there other Hotels in Manhattan that you'd recommend?

2

u/jm14ed Local Oct 16 '25

Any of these hotels are in good locations.

thanks for the mod with the loveliest attitude for directing me to this thread ✨✨✨ im new to reddit so i don’t really know how it works!

anyways does anyone have hotel/hostel/motel recs for the summer? in between june and august, not set on dates yet; the cheaper the better but also safe ish? all i need is a bed and a bathroom tbh

thank you so much in advance for your help, sorry for being a lousy international tourist, it will happen again :-(

u/jm14ed Local Dec 19 '25

We’re happy to help, but we need a little bit of help from you first. There are too many hotels and too many neighborhoods for us to just say this is the hotel for you.

Take a look at the guidance above and help us out by narrowing it down a bit.

Wife and I are thinking about visiting via train from Western MA for our anniversary, which is also Memorial Day weekend. I have no interest in staying in Manhattan, I get Brooklyn’s reputation, but I don’t know much about Queens or the Bronx. Any advice for which borough to start looking for hotel rooms for:

• <$150/night (<$100 is probably a scam, right?)

• we’re comfortable with trains

• we’re both artists

• I have celiac disease but idk if any hotels have gf options

As a side note I’m looking forward to Zohran’s NYC šŸ’™, but are there any areas that are maybe more homophobic/ transphobic so we can avoid them?

Hi all! I’m planning my first ever visit to NYC and I’m super excited. It will be beginning of May. Here is my itinerary so far of the more or less ā€œfreeā€ things I’ve found to do.

Central Park Times Square Walk the Highline Roosevelt Island Tram Little Island Park Rooftop view/Top of Rock Stanten Island Ferry Coney Island Grand Central Terminal

I basically just wanna hit all the basic tourist stuff for my first time. I’m wondering where the best place to stay would be. I have a friend who has stayed in Times Square at YOTEL and recommends but wondering if there is anything else for a budget stay. Not too concerned about niceties of a place to stay, would rather pay less to have a less fancy place. I do want to be close to some of the things I want to do though, without taking hour long subways or whatever. Any suggestions on best places or areas to stay? Budget under $180 a night hopefully, I’ve traveled and stay on a budget before so I definitely know it’s doable but would like to know all my options and tips. Thank you!!

u/VisitNYCmodx Mar 12 '26

YOTEL and The Pod hotels get mentioned a lot for budget travel.

Visiting NYC for the first time with my girlfriend for my graduation, April 22nd to April 26th; then my mom is coming from April 24th to April 26th and we want to get her another room in the same hotel.
I've been looking in midtown and lower manahattan, just because that seemed like a good place to start, but I'm not set on that, open to surrounding areas. I'm just kind of overwhelmed by the amount of hotel options and am just looking for something that is in a walkable area with some good food/shopping, in a hotel that is decent, clean, etc.
Trying to keep the budget for the room at about $300 per night.

Asking for advice. I am planning on proposing to my girlfriend in NYC in June. Not married (no pun intended) to any particular spot, but want it to be somewhat private and romantic. We are there for 1 night only as we are driving up farther north to see friends. What hotel would you stay at for 1 night that is either a place to pop the question or just an amazing stay for one night and breakfast the next day? Willing to spend around $1200 for the hotel night and around the diamond district area as we have dinner reservations in the area. Thx in advance!

Hi everyone,

I’m planning a NYC trip in about 5 months and looking for hotel recommendations.

My budget is around $300 per night for 2 nights total.

I’d really love an amazing Manhattan skyline / Empire State Building type view, something similar to those beautiful skyline hotel photos. I’m okay staying outside Manhattan too (Jersey City, Hoboken, Brooklyn, Queens, etc.) if the view is better or the value makes more sense.

I don’t need luxury, just something clean, safe, and worth the money with a memorable view.

Any hotel recommendations or areas I should look into?

Thanks!

u/jm14ed Local May 28 '26

Your best bet is a hotel in Long Island city. Pay attention to how far the hotel is from the subway, though.

My husband and I are planning a long weekend in NYC in November and can't decide between staying in Williamsburg or the Lower East Side.

The two hotels (budget but ideally still nice!) we've narrowed down to are:

  • Pod Williamsburg
  • UNTITLED at 3 Freeman Alley (Lower East Side)

They're basically the same price.

A bit about the trip:

  • We've both been to NYC multiple times, so we're not focused on the major tourist sights.
  • Food is probably the main reason for the trip.
  • We love walking.
  • Current plans include spending decent time around West Village and Central Park for the fall leaves (hopefully).
  • We may also go to an Islanders game if timings work out.

My dilemma:

Williamsburg sounds like a great place to come back to each evening with good food options locally, I've also not spend much time there so would be nice to experience it.

But looking at our itinerary, most of our time seems to be in Manhattan, so I'm wondering whether staying at UNTITLED would make the trip flow better and involve less subway time.

For people who know NYC well:

  1. Which location would you choose for this specific trip?
  2. Is Williamsburg worth staying in for the neighbourhood experience, even if most of our plans are in Manhattan?
  3. Which area feels nicer to return to after a long day out?
  4. Any strong opinions on either hotel, or a different one?

Thanks so much!

Hi folks,

I decided to surprise my Wife with a trip to NYC.

It's one of our favorite cities in the world, and quite frankly, I have been thinking about the Grays Papaya hot dog since I had it 2 years ago.

The thing is, I picked a wildly expensive time to go. My wife is obsessed with both musicals and Rocky Horror. I thought, hey, why not buy tickets for Rocky Horror on Halloween night!

Whoops.

I am pretty well-versed in hotels in the Broadway/Times Square area, but even the Pod is going for around $ 450 a night that weekend. Last time we went, we stayed at the Riu Times Square (no complaints!), but it's like 2x the price we paid for that weekend.

And I get it - I know this will be a pricey weekend, but curious if anyone has any ideas for other areas that might be cheaper - at this point, I'd love to find somewhere sub-$400. Ideally, it would be near some sort of transit so we could take the subway to the Broadway area.

Would Brooklyn or LI be a bit cheaper?

More context: we are flying into LGA and may take the train to Sleepy Hollow on Friday.

try the hilton garden inn in long island city. it’s a solid hotel in a nice area (mostly young professionals and students). a queens plaza subway station entrance is just around the corner from the hotel. super easy get to studio 54 and grand central terminal for your train to sleepy hollow.

2

u/FitBefore50 Jun 25 '26

Thank you - exact type of info I was looking for

2

u/skampr13 Jun 25 '26

Also check out the area around 6th/7th Ave in the 20s in Manhattan. There are a handful of ā€œperfectly fineā€ national chain hotels (Hilton garden inn, aloft, etc) there. They aren’t sexy, but they often have reasonable prices. They’re super central without being right in Times Square.

2

u/VisitNYCmodx Jun 26 '26

It's an expensive time because the NY Marathon is November 1, and that draws a lot of out-of-market visitors. I bet if you checked the rates for the following week they would be a lot less.

I booked at Hotel Belleclaire for 5 days in August. It looks wonderful & the location seems like it will be quieter for us when we want some downtime to just hang out and stroll around near the hotel.
However, hotels.com currently has a bunch of properties in Midtown on sale & I can save $600 if we switch bookings to Dream Midtown.
Would you switch?

Anyone ever stay at San Carlos Hotel in midtown east? Been scouring for budget friendly but decent places for my buddy and I on a Thursday-Sunday in early August, and came across not only this highly rated place but a 600 sq ft suite for $745 (all in after all taxes and fees) for the 3 nights. Haven’t found anything else that comes close to this in terms of price point, location, size, and reviews. Feel like I got lucky on booking.com

Hi, we are visiting NYC Oct 23-25. Our First time! Would like to be close to MSG and the High Line, so considering something in Chelsea or Midtown. We would like to have a King size bed that does not have the foot of the bed against the wall (weird request, but this 6’4ā€ guy cannot). Hoping to keep it under 900 for the two nights. Any suggestions appreciated!

2

u/jm14ed_v2 Jul 21 '26

The penn station area is very convenient to multiple subway lines. You have most of manhattan at your door step. Hotels with king beds as you like are not hard to find.

My sister and I are coming down in early November for 5 days. We know most attractions we are going to (MOMA, Museum of Natural History, St. Patrick Cathedral) but don't really care if we are near those. I think we can get to most pretty easily with public transportation.

We have been looking at Chelsea and West Village but are open to anything.

We are interested in being in a neighborhood that will feel safe to walk around in the evening (obviously taking normal safety precautions), great restaurants, and not super empty (scarred from Denver).

We are hoping to spend around $500 a night.

2

u/jm14ed_v2 Jul 28 '26

You’re describing most of most of the city. Just make sure your hotel is close to a subway.

2

u/Frosty_Thought_3607 Jul 31 '26

Coming to NYC September 4th-7th doing all the touristy things time square,5th ave, canal, china town, little Italy, Central Park, Bryant park, Empire State, 9/11 etc help me find a good location hotel. Just 2 adults would like to not spend more than 500 a night. I’ve been before and stayed at the pod hotel near time square it’s an option I’m considering but now being in my late 20’s I’d like a little better of a room

3

u/skampr13 Jul 31 '26

What looked good to you when you did a search?

2

u/Frosty_Thought_3607 Jul 31 '26

Honestly it’s overwhelming for options.
POD Times Square
Tempo
Hyatt
Marriott
Row
Bryant park
Parkland

2

u/jm14ed_v2 Jul 31 '26

The Bryant park hotel is nice.

Assuming these are all the midtown locations of these chains, it’s not going to matter a ton. Other than the POD they are all middle of the road hotels.

2

u/catsrule-humansdrool Jul 31 '26

I’m between Holiday Inn Times Square or WestHouse. Focus of my trip is to see a few broadway shows (will depend on what’s running) and eat good food, a mix of normal food and fine dining. I’ll be at the Holiday Inn for a conference at the Javits Center but unsure if I should extend my trip there or at WestHouse for a better location.

2

u/jm14ed_v2 Jul 31 '26

The west house is a better location.

Hello! I’m bringing my 15-year-old to see Harry Styles at Madison Square Garden on October 10, and we’ll be staying for three nights beginning October 9. We’ll be driving up from Washington, D.C., so I’ll need somewhere to park the car. I would strongly prefer staying outside Manhattan rather than attempting to drive through it again in this lifetime! In terms of convenience and ease of getting into Manhattan, would you recommend Jersey City, Hoboken, Brooklyn, or Queens? I’d also like to preemptively apologize if any of what I wrote is outside of the rules for the thread.

2

u/VisitNYCmodx Aug 04 '26

Probably for hotels with parking in Jersey City or Hoboken. The PATH train goes between those places and 33rd Street in Manhattan (a block east of MSG). Any reason you're not taking the train up?

2

u/Itookyourqueen Aug 04 '26

We have to visit the in-laws quite circuitously on the way back.

Thank you for the sound advice :)

2

u/VisitNYCmodx Aug 04 '26

Just confirm with the hotel that they are within a short walking distance to the Path (I know there's a bunch of hotels in JC by the Grove Street station but can't tell you what the parking situation is like).

2

u/Itookyourqueen Aug 05 '26

Thank you- I was able to book at the Sonesta Hotel there in Jersey City- again, thank you for helping the out-of-towners like this.

2

u/VisitNYCmodx Aug 05 '26

You're welcome. One more thing to do: download the Ride PATH app for train info. Keep in mind that if you access the NYC transit system, you'll need to pay an additional fare (they are two separate systems).

u/Itookyourqueen Aug 15 '26

So many thanks :)

So I'm having severe trouble finding a hotel. I'm naturally indecisive so this is pretty awful for me. I would like to keep my total two day stay at $1,200-$1,300, maybe less. Preferably not too far from the theater district. I'm also hoping for an early check-in and views. And Preferably a tub. I tried upping my budget but I can't say I loved the more expensive hotels either. I know a lot of people would say that their rooms don't need to be that great, but I never go on vacation and it might be a while before I can go on vacation again so it just feels like a ton of pressure.Ā

2

u/jm14ed_v2 Aug 07 '26

Can you tell us which hotels looked good to you and why you don’t think they will work for you?

2

u/Rosebunse Aug 07 '26

I really have looked at so many, but I think a few did jump out:

I liked the Omni Berkshire, but it didn't necessarily have the dining options I wanted. But I really do like it.

Thompson Central Park New York, by Hyatt is nice, but I'm not sure it's worth the price, plus dining options.

The Evelyn Hotel didn't have a tub option.

The Pearl looks roo loud, isn't quite dramatic enough, but is in a good spot. But I don't know, I worry it will be a bit loud.

4

u/jm14ed_v2 Aug 07 '26

These are all good hotels. Don’t pick a hotel because of the dining options. You’re in New York City; great food is everywhere.

2

u/Rosebunse Aug 07 '26

Yeah, honestly, all of the hotels being so good is making it hard lol

3

u/jm14ed_v2 Aug 07 '26

Just make a decision. You're going to have a great time. Flip a coin or something.

3

u/VisitNYCmodx Aug 07 '26

Great, pick one of those.

2

u/Rosebunse Aug 07 '26

Are there any Manhattan hotels to be avoided?

3

u/VisitNYCmodx Aug 07 '26

When doing your research things to look for you TO MAKE YOUR OWN DECISIONS:

  • Review scores below aboutĀ 4.0/5Ā (or underĀ 8/10Ā on Booking.com).
  • Repeated recent complaints aboutĀ cleanliness,Ā bed bugs,Ā mold, orĀ maintenance.
  • Reviews saying "great location but terrible hotel"—that's a common trap in Midtown.

3

u/Next_Friend1548 Aug 12 '26

Just so you know. I have stayed at the Pearl twice and it was almost silent. It is not dramatic though but it is a really good spot.

We're travelling to NYC for the first time in October (19th-23rd), family of four with two young teenagers. We've found a very small Airbnb in Midtown (shared kitchen, one bedroom, and a sofabed in the living room) for $2400, but we're wondering whether it's better to stay somewhere with easy subway access and get a bigger place for less money - eg we've found a bigger two-bed place in Upper Manhattan.

What areas would people recommend that are further out, but with easy subway access to midtown/the touristy parts?

Also, we'd love to watch a Knicks pre-season game, but their only home games are the week before - any idea if they'll be announcing any more pre-season games for the time we're there?

2

u/VisitNYCmodx Aug 09 '26

n most cases, Airbnb and other short-term rentals are illegal in NYC and much of northern New Jersey. Stick to hotels or licensed rentals. If it sounds to good to be true, it probably is a scam.

Wife and I are booked into the Pod Brooklyn for a week in Sept. I'm a little worried that it won't be comfortable for a week. We've stayed in small rooms before but generally not for a week with frosted glass in-room bathroom. On the other hand it's much cheaper and we like Williamsburg.

For comparison I was looking at the Empire which was $2500 (King bed) vs $1800 for Pod (queen). Reviews for Pod are better but I'm not sure how much to rely on those.

Previously we've stayed in the Freehand and it was fine but I'm trying to stay a bit on the cheaper side.

3

u/jm14ed_v2 Aug 09 '26

The empire has pretty small rooms as well.

2

u/PrestigiousExpert686 Aug 14 '26

I'm planning to visit NYC for 2 or 3 nights midweek during the final week of October. As it's a brief visit I want to stay in Manhattan so I can walk to see all the tourist sights, have restaurants nearby, etc. I want to feel the buzz and excitement of NYC.

My nightly budget is $350 to $400 per night, but very few hotels show up in that price range. Most are $460 minimum for a tiny room.

I can't justify paying this when I normally vacation in Asia where I can get one or two weeks' accommodation for the same price.

Is there some reason NYC is so expensive during those dates? I've googled but don't see something. Should I wait for last minute deals or does this not work with NYC?

I thought October would be low season and better priced. I am not there for Halloween so it's not price hikes because of that.

Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced hotel which is clean and well located (for walking to sights)?

Thank you.

3

u/jm14ed_v2 Aug 14 '26

October is in no way low season in NYC. Hotel rates dip slightly in January through mid march. That’s about it.

I doubt you’ll find hotels give lower rates closer to time. But, I do think you can find something cheaper than $400 a night.

u/kli9641 Frequent Visitor Aug 14 '26

unfortunately october is an expensive month for accomodations in general. the last couple days of the month are especially brutal due to halloween and ny marathon travel. if you’re flexible with dates, early-mid november’s (after the marathon) prices are not as bad as october’s.

hotel-wise, i’d look outside of midtown. most of the time, the financial district and the lower east side are much cheaper.

2

u/PrestigiousExpert686 Aug 14 '26

Thank you for the helpful response. I will research this.

2

u/skampr13 Aug 14 '26

Where are you looking? I’m looking at Booking right now and there are plenty of options in your price range, even in midtown.

Almost all hotel rooms in nyc are going to be smaller than typical American hotels, so don’t hold out for that. And it’s no use comparing prices to a different location. If you want to vacation in Asia, go there, you know?

2

Going to NY for 3 days in a week (8/24-8/27) or so partially for business partially for touristy things. Looking for ideally ~150 a night max, though if I gotta spend more I gotta spend more. Main thing I want access to is Manhattan tbvh. Looking at LIC mostly, though I’m open to other areas, as I’m not on super stringent time constraints. Only caveat…I gotta be able to check in at 20 instead of 21 šŸ˜…

Trying to decide between these hotels for a 5 night stay mid November, hoping to be in the mid town/Time Square area, anywhere up to Central Park. Two adults one child, more moderately priced options:

  1. Home2 Suites By Hilton New York Times Square

  2. Millennium Hotel Broadway Times Square

  3. ROW NYC at Times Square

  4. Hotel St James

Thanks for any advice or experience with any of these!

2

u/VisitNYCmodx Aug 19 '26

I'd go with whichever offers you the most space.

2

u/FewIntention1842 Aug 25 '26

I am taking a group of HS kids to NYC in the spring. If you wanted to stay at a hotel that includes breakfast with your stay - in the Theater District - where are you staying? I know nothing is cheap, but the best bang for your buck. I'm looking right now at Hotel Edison, which includes 2 grab & go breakfasts each morning. I looked at 2 others, but they were a little more for nothing better. Thanks for your help! (And yes, I searched first.)

2

u/kli9641 Frequent Visitor Aug 25 '26

what were the other two hotels you checked out? having done big tours with school-aged kids, i think the logistics are much different than a family trip. i’d definitely check out riu plaza manhattan—nice, spacious rooms and a breakfast buffet included.

2

u/FewIntention1842 Aug 25 '26

I looked at the Hampton Inn on 48th ($75 more per night) and the Embassy Suites on 39th (just too far from the main activities). Thanks for the tip on Riu - it looks promising as an option!

2

u/VisitNYCmodx Aug 25 '26

Also you should be speaking with the group sales manager (if not already)

2

u/FewIntention1842 Aug 25 '26

I will call the hotel once I have a firm number of students, but most require 10 rooms minimum for a group rate. We will not have 10 rooms.

I am traveling to New York in September with my wife and 27-year-old daughter and her friend. We will be there for five nights and most of our activities will be south of Central Park though we would like to see Central Park. Like many people, we are looking at accommodations in Midtown area, but we’re also looking on the upper west side. Will the time it takes to travel back-and-forth from an upper west side accommodation Get in the way of enjoying our days?

Hey guys Visiting NYC, rather US for the first time from 5th-11th of September Travelling with my dad Need hotel recommendations. Everything i see online is way too expensive. All we need is basic amenities and a clean place since we'll mostly be spending our time out. So nothing too extravagant. Fine with staying in long island city since that's supposed to be a cheaper alternative and easy commute as well Budget would ideally be 100-150usd since it's a long trip but can push upto a max of 200(only if no decent options in the budget)

I've looked at a few options like LIC, LIC plaza, Hilton, Wingate by Wyndham. These were supposed to be within our budget but somehow cost more than $200. I've looked through booking.com. Is there something I'm getting wrong? Pls help with some hotel recommendations.

2

u/VisitNYCmodx Aug 27 '26

Sept. is a very busy time here with several big events going on, that drives up hotel prices. Either change your dates or budget. This is the reality of NYC.

2

u/Sad_Doctor3682 Aug 27 '26

Oh, I had no idea. I made this budget keeping in mind the reviews i got from a friend who visited last year. What would an ideal budget be for this time since i cant really change my datesšŸ˜…

3

u/VisitNYCmodx Aug 27 '26

That's on you for not researching. Your budget is going to have to be whatever it costs.

Does anyone have photos or can tell me what the suite layouts are like at The Manhattan Club? They only have 1 picture for each room and I'm trying to find if the One Bedroom Suite with Two Bathrooms (https://www.manhattanclub.com/suites) has the room closed off. I am visiting with my grandmother in December and she wants separate hotel rooms, so she could have the closed bedroom and I can sleep on the sofa. Thanks!

Hello! Will be a first time solo traveler in NYC and i shortlisted 3 places that the internet said were safe and budget(under 600-800 usd for 5 nights) friendly for women, LIC hotel, holiday inn Long Island city E and Nesva and i have also looked up the pod hotel. I just wanted places that have a direct public transport connection to MSG. So i was hoping someone on here could give me honest insights on these places and if there’s any better suggestions that didn’t come up on my internet sleuthing.
Good to know info:
5 night 6 day trip, 2 concerts, i have a list of activities but suggestions welcome, i have bakeries and restaurants that i want to go to and if i can manage to save more I’ll also consider visiting a couple museums.

Mom and one tween trip-

Looking at a fri-sun early December so quick trip Driving but will keep car in parking. Staying at a Hilton owned property is preferred for points.

Narrowed down to the Garden Inn, in Tribeca OR the new George at Columbia (Harlem). Price difference between them is $350 total. Max 800 a night all in.

I'm not a savvy subway taker so taxis/Ubers are more my comfort level though understanding more expensive, and I'm anxious about messing up trying to take transit in general and need a bit of advice. Staying anywhere right in the thick of it is totally out of the question due to budget.

What we want to do: squeeze in as much as we can before we have to drive home mid-day Sunday. Catch a Christmas spectacular show, visit the 9/11 Memorial, see Times Square, walk around to see the Christmas displays and the tree, perhaps take him to Statue of Liberty if time allows.

Primarily looking for "this is not an issue because..." Or "this is what you should be worried about.." advice.

2

u/jm14ed Local Nov 03 '25

You don’t have to be a savvy traveler to take the subway. Read the getting around guide and there are lots of YouTube videos to help get you comfortable, since you do not want to be taking taxis/ubers everywhere.

Tribeca is going to give you a significant number of subway lines in a short walk compared to the George.

After narrowing it down to a few hotels (was a little difficult finding hotels allowing +18 min age for check ins) which hotel would y’all recommend to stay in.Based on that its on a relatively safe area, that’s close to the activities during that time, and overall quality of the hotel.

  • Luma hotel( I think the following 3 would be @ the bottom of my list since there in time square)
  • Delta Hotels New York Times Square
  • paramount Times Square
  • The Shoreham
  • Moxy Chelsea
  • Residence Inn by Marriott Manhattan/Central Park
  • NH collection Madison Avenue

Our travel time is the week of dec 18

3

u/VisitNYCmodx Nov 04 '25

As long as it's by a subway you're good on any one. As far as the quality of the hotel, you have to rely on reviews.

Hi, I’m taking a trip in January for a week and a half and I’m trying to decide between the Hilton Garden Inn FiDi/Downtown and the EVEN hotel Midtown East. Looking to do all the normal touristy things so the EVEN would probably be more convenient from that standpoint, though It’s roughly 15-20 dollars more expensive per night. I don’t mind paying the extra if I know it’ll definitely be worth it though. If anyone can illuminate me with their experiences of either of these hotels or their areas that would be much appreciated!

Hi guys,

Would really appreciate some comment on below for a group of 4 people ( 1 including a 62years mum) We are planning to stay in NYC for 2 weeks from 12-26 Dec and need some help on hotel and itinerary check.

I understand we picked the busiest and one of the most expensive time to travel, but still want to find somewhere to stay not relatively expensive and far.

I have researched this sub and see staying Jersey city is a bit far even if we stay somewhere near PATH, expecting some delay and long commute.

I think I will be narrowing down these 3 areas(please share if there are other closer area)

  • Midtown Manhattan Hotel price is crazy but I found some 2 bed/3 bed suite/ units on booking.com
  • Brooklyn area hotel
  • Long Island City hotel

Based on above, which one would you pick? Manhattan will be the closest but are these suite safe/trustworthy

Brooklyn / LIC would be around 30 mins by subway, which one is safer and better?

If LIC/ Brooklyn is great too, would you recommend we book couple days in each to experience or just pick one for the entire stay ?

2

u/VisitNYCmodx Nov 21 '25

not relatively expensive and far.

Be realistic. You are coming at a peak tourist time, and planning very last minute. Anything really cheap will be suspicious as to quality/location. Most hotels are in a safe area, you have to prioritize how you want to spend your time (do you want to pop up to hotel room during the day, spending time on the subway, etc.). Brooklyn is a large area, check a transit map and make sure you are near a subway.

We are not booking agents.

1

u/nakedmickey Nov 23 '25

Hi guys, narrowed down to these 2 hotels.
The Chelsean New York and Pod 51 ( queen pod)

We are a group of 4 ( 30,30 30 and 64 years old mum)

Which one would you recommend among these 2? I have seen review for The Chelsean with dirty bed and bed bug, Pod 51. review are generally room being very small.

Thanks in advance.

We are planning to cover NYC and Niagara falls from Nov 29 to Dec 5

We have to drive the car. Wondering where to stay near New York. We are preferring hotels over AirBNB since those are usually well maintained than Air-BNB also with free breakfast ones we dont have to worry about spending too much on food.. We need to park the car and take public transit for 4-5 days to see places like museums, statue of liberty, Brooklyn Bridge, Central Park, Rockfeller observatory, 911 memorial etc.

I am looking for hotels in Newark, Jersey City, Secaucus but I am not sure some of them are near to public transport. Some do offer shuttle but looks like they are mostly for Newark Airport.

Could you please let me know which area is safer and has public transport very near to hotel.

I am thinking less than $150/night stay

Also are there city passes available instead of buying individual tickets?

2

u/VisitNYCmodx Nov 23 '25

I think, given the time of year, your budget is unrealistic. And why do you need the car for the NYC portion of your trip? Can't you rent one for when you're headed to NF?

You're going to have to do your own research as we are not travel agents.

Hello - I’m looking to bring my teen sons to New York in June, this will be a quick 3 day stop before they go to Miami to watch the šŸ“󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁓ó æ game. Really looking to pack in as much tourist stuff in that time we can. I’ve been to NY twice but I’m absolutely terrible with the subway so not too keen to navigate it lots on my own. Please could you recommend areas that aren’t Times Square we can stay which are safe and easily accessible to Manhattan and the tourist spots. Any hotel recommendations would be great too - budget Ā£1200 for the 3 nights. Thank you ā˜ŗļø

2

u/VisitNYCmodx Dec 08 '25

To limit yourself to one area is crazy. There's plenty of apps and advice on how to navigate the subway. I don't know what that budget is in US$ so I'll just tell you that there's lots of hotels in non-TSQ areas: E. 40's, Chelsea, Union Square, Upper West Side.... basically there are hotels everywhere.

Curious if anyone has any reccs for nice romantic hotels in Manhattan which don’t have loud bass from rooftop bars, etc. Going to propose to my gf in NYC during Xmas week.

Higher frequency noises are fine but bass from clubs and bars definitely gets to us. We’re spending a week during Christmas in NYC. Hoping for a romantic week, and the budget for hotel is ~$750/night.

Would love any advice anyone can give.

Thank you!

3 friends, all girls, late twenties, want to take a trip to New York next November. Can you recommend a hotel in a safe area that is easy to get to all usual touristy spots. 9/11 memorial, Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty, Times Square, etc. Never really been out of California and we just graduated college so want to celebrate with a girls trip. Want to stay 4 nights. Thank you in advance.

2

u/VisitNYCmodx Dec 10 '25

Any neighborhood with convenient access to a subway (Midtown East/West, Chelsea, Union Square/Flatiron, Fidi etc) will all be fine. Your budget will dictate which hotel more than anything.

2

u/Catz_2224 Dec 11 '25

We really had a great experience at the Cambria hotel in Chelsea a block either way to subway and easy walking to Empire State and Rockefeller center. Have fun!!! With the four you will have no problem finding a hotel. Just stay out of the Time square area hotels Just my opinion some people love the craziness.

Going to nyc for a week in January for the first time and was looking for affordable hotels. I did want a room with a city view on a budget which is hard lol but I’m trying to find a few. Came across Ink 48, Yotel, Innside Melia and Millennium Hilton for some city view rooms. I did check the reviews and they seem good but wanted to know if anyone has experience or knows anything better? These are coming up to $150/ night which is fine for me, cant do more than that lol.

My husband and I are traveling to NY at the end of February to see a broadway show. We also want to go to the comedy cellar while we are there. I’ve only been to NY once before so I don’t really know much about the different areas, but I’m hoping to stay somewhere we could walk to one or the other venue, we don’t mind a longer walk. Our budget is up to $200 ish a night. We prefer adults only spaces and would love to stay somewhere a little unique. Any suggestions for cool spots we could stay?

3

u/VisitNYCmodx Dec 23 '25

We prefer adults only spaces and would love to stay somewhere a little unique.Ā

I don't think there is such a thing as "adult only" hotel. As for as unique, I think you would have to up your budget. Also define what is "unique" to you. Union Square/Chelsea is kind of between both spots you mentioned. Again, your budget is going to be the deciding factor.

2

u/jm14ed Local Dec 23 '25 edited Dec 23 '25

If you really want to be walkable to these places, that will limit your options significantly. Using the subway will be a lot better for your trip.

When you did a search for hotels, what hotels felt unique to you and met your budget?

1

u/doctor_who_17 Dec 24 '25 edited Dec 24 '25

We are planning a trip to NY for a few shows on Broadway. Currently targeting the last week of February, able to shift about the dates.

I’d like to be around 30 mins walk from Broadway. Initially wanted to stay near Times Sqaure, but I think we’d like to have a slightly quieter stay. Would the Chelsea area be good? Any other recommendations?

Some of the other things we’d likely do: MoMA, some sight seeing if architecture in Manhattan, maybe a trip to Queens. Hotel brand preferences: Hilton, maybe Hyatt.. I do have some benefits with Marriott, but Hilton is generally my top pick. Just would like to know what districts/areas are ideal to find some hotels. Not really limited by budget.

5

u/jm14ed Local Dec 24 '25

There's no bad area to stay as long as the hotel is reasonably close to a subway station. Being in Manhattan below 60th St will allow more subway lines to connect you to places you want to go, but making a connection on the subway is no big deal.

Hi everyone! I’m planning my first trip to NYC and could really use some advice on choosing between three hotels I’ve narrowed it down to: • Thompson Hotel Central Park • Park Lane Hotel • Hyatt Union Square

A little about what I’m looking for: • Budget is around $400–$500 per night after fees • I’m traveling with my spouse (no kids this trip) • I want something clean, comfortable, and a little ā€œluxury-liteā€ — not ultra-luxury, but still polished • Location matters: I want to be close to walkable areas, food, sightseeing, and easy subway access • I don’t need huge rooms, but I do care about noise levels, comfort, and overall vibe.

Please Help

2

u/VisitNYCmodx Jan 09 '26

I want to be close to walkable areas, food, sightseeing, and easy subway access

All of those hotels have that. As do most hotels in NYC. You really can't go wrong with any of those choices. As far as noise levels, etc. I would check the review on trip advisor or some such website.

I'll be staying at Public Hotels for 7 nights in the coming future. Has anyone who has stayed in both a regular queen room and a high-floor queen speak on whether the extra bit of money is worth it? What are the views like on the lower floors? Is it worth shelling extra?

2

u/paulderev Frequent Visitor Jan 24 '26

I’ve been to the public hotel recently. There is a rooftop/terrace bar there but I went in the summer. Not sure if it’ll be open the time of year you go. There is a night club (215) in the basement I was told while there. Could make for noise on a low floor depending on the day. Personally I would go for the higher room since you don’t have much skyscraper competition for light and view in Nolita/SoHo. you’ll actually get the view you’re paying for unlike some other hotels.

Family of 4 adults, 4 nights first time in NYC in mid May. Most double beds are on smaller side and have small bathrooms. Especially where toilet is not separate from shower and vanity it’s not easy to get ready in morning etc !!

Not looking for very low price rooms either but not trying to break the bank. Hotel budget up to $5000 Cleanliness is essential.

Lotte , The Dominick have double beds with decent room sizes. Can’t decide on which. Both are away from most attractions.

Help me decide plz and if you know of any other larger hotel room for 4 adults, I appreciate sharing it.

Which of these 5 hotels is my best option?

I'm bringing my adult son for his first trip to NYC for 3-days at the end of next month so we can attend an event near the Empire State building. The event is on the night we arrive and we'll have the next day to explore the city. Being within walking distance of the venue was the most important factor but I also have the following considerations.

  • Preferably priced between $300-400/night, no more than $500.
  • CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN (and clean)
  • Room must have 2 beds, full or queen
  • Close to a subway (which seems to be a given)
  • City views (this is the least important and not a deal-breaker)

Here are the hotels I've come up with based on my search, arranged by cost, and the pros and cons for each.

Hilton Garden Inn, 35th St. This is really only on the list because I find Hilton hotels to provide adequate accommodations at a reasonable price. I don't expect any bells or whistles. It's only 294/night and a 6-minute walk. I don't really want to stay here.

Intercontinental Times Square My first choice, but it's almost a mile to walk to the event in the cold. 381/night, I might be able to use points for this.

Archer Hotel I've never heard of it before but it ticks all the boxes. The boutique hotels are intriguing and the room has a view of the Empire State building.. It's a 6-minute walk and is 387/night.

**I should probably nix these last 2 because of cost, but I want this trip to be special for my son. I wanted to gift him a trip to NYC when he graduated high school and then college but couldn't afford it either time. **

Gregorian Hotel Another boutique hotel. No mention of city views but the room includes tickets to Edge NYC in Hudson Yards ($90 value). $452/night and a 4-minute walk to our venue.

Refinery Hotel At $518/night this hotel would need to be pretty special to be chosen. It's a 6-minute walk to the venue.

I'm also open to other suggestions, but I've looked at about 2 dozen hotels at this point. The 2 beds became the primary reason I ruled out a lot of hotels. Thanks for your input.

2

u/VisitNYCmodx Jan 11 '26

I'm sure any of those choices will be fine. If you stay at the Intercontinental (and can use points) you can always jump on the subway or a cab if it's too cold to walk.

I'm curious about The Tillary hotel, I booked a stay there for next month due to its close proximity to where I will work and because the rooms looked good and decently sized (I chose the King Luxury Room - 300 sq. ft.). Did I make a mistake or is this a solid hotel?

Accomodation

Hi we’re planning to visit Christmas of this year. Its a long time dream 🄹 We would like to know which hotel is good for a family of three (5 yrs old)? Preferably close to most tourist spots/food/subway.

We’re currently looking at Moxy NYC Chelsea. But any other recommendations especially based on personal experience would be great. Budget is around 300-400$ per night. Thank you!

During a recent family trip we stayed at the Hotel Beacon on the UWS. I really loved it, but I am returning in April with my teen daughter and she wants to do something different. I would like a non-chain hotel with a little bit of character, a fridge in the room, and still probably near Central Park. Also would be great if it were very close to the train. Is she was willing, I would return to the same hotel as it checked all of those boxes, but I also understand wanting to diversify. And ideas? Willing to spend about $500 per night.

If you want a boutique hotel around Central Park, then you only have a few neighborhoods to pick from. Your budget will guide you to only a few options.

Hi, I’m visiting the city the first weekend of May with my girlfriend, coming up from DC via Amtrak. Going to be there for 4-5 nights. Main reason we’re going up is to see a show on broadway (her Christmas gift from me to her). Looking for a hotel in midtown, with a budget of no more than $400/night (including fees). Main things we want are cleanliness, space, and proximity to the subway to explore the city on the days we don’t have the broadway show. It’ll be both of our first times in the city so any recommendations or insight would be greatly appreciated!

3

u/VisitNYCmodx Jan 19 '26

All hotels in Manhattan have proximity to the subway. As far as cleanliness, noise levels, etc. I would check the review on trip advisor or some such website.

u/jm14ed Local Jan 19 '26

What did you see that looked good to you when you did a search on a booking site?

Hey everyone! Hope you’re doing well šŸ™‚

I’m debating which hotel to stay at for my first trip to NYC, and I’d really appreciate any advice or guidance.

My two options are:

1) Hilton New York Fashion District 152 W 26th St, Manhattan, NY 10001

2) Walker Hotel Greenwich Village 52 W 13th St, New York, NY 10011

I’m currently leaning toward the Hilton since the room is bigger, it has a gym, and feels a bit more modern. That said, I know location and neighborhood vibe matter a lot in NYC, so I’m open to opinions.

Here are some of the spots I’m planning to visit during my trip: • Sunrise at the Brooklyn Bridge • NYC Public Library (and mail myself a postcard) • DUMBO (walk around) • Chelsea Market • Walk the High Line • Central Park • Joe’s Pizza • Roosevelt Island Tram • Grand Central Station • New York Stock Exchange • Katz’s Delicatessen (pastrami sandwich) • St. Patrick’s Cathedral • Crab House Times Square • Pier 35 • Chinatown • Mickey Spillane’s (dive bar near Hell’s Kitchen) • Liberty Bagels • Apollo Bagels • Renew Day Spa (Chinatown) • Statue of Liberty via Staten Island Ferry • 9/11 Memorial

Based on this itinerary, which hotel would you recommend — or is there another area I should be considering instead?

Thanks in advance

2

u/jm14ed Local Jan 23 '26

Those two hotels are like a ten minute walk from each other, so I’d say the location is essentially the same. The question is more about do you want a boutique hotel or a chain.

2

u/VisitNYCmodx Jan 23 '26

You didn't mention a budget (or when you are visiting) but I like the Walker (because it's not a chain). Either way, both have great access to the subway which will get you to all the places you listed.

Hello everyone, hope you're doing well. Me and my girlfriend are visiting for the first time NYC this October 14th and staying till October 17th. Things we wanna do is the usual touristy stuff like visiting Empire State, Times Square, Central Park and we are going to the Harry Styles concert on Madison Square Garden. Our budget goes around $1,000 to $1,300. I do have a couple of questions. First one being:

I found one in Queens relatively cheap, however, to get to Madison Square Garden, how would we get there?

Secondly, while me and my gf are staying for several days, my sister is coming also only for the Harry Styles concert and would need a place to stay for the night, is it possible, given the policies of the hotel, if she stays with us even tho I reserved only for two adults?

My daughter (13) and I need a place from July 3-august 2ish. Our daytime weekday activities will be in the UWS, 90th area. Looking into Washington and Hamilton Heights, Harlem… where else would be under an hour commute (willing to learn all the systems to get there)? Hoping to keep the housing under $5k (realistic at all?). I’ve found a few airbnbs and wondering if I’m missing places to check. Thanks!

Hi everyone!

I’m going to New York for the first time in May with my family, and we’re planning to do all the typical tourist stuff (lots of walking, classic attractions, Broadway, etc).

I’ve been researching hotels and came across Element Times Square West. I really like the price, the fact that it has a kitchenette in the room, and the free breakfast, which helps a lot with the budget.

However, I’ve seen several reviews mentioning long wait times and lines for the elevators, especially during peak hours, as well as concerns about the location near the Port Authority Bus Terminal, where some people report uncomfortable or sketchy activity in the area, particularly at night.

I know NYC is one of the biggest cities in the world, so I understand there’s no way to completely avoid urban issues. That said, since I’m traveling with my family, I’d really like to avoid situations like seeing people injecting drugs right outside the hotel.

For those who’ve stayed at Element Times Square West, do the elevator issues and the surrounding area significantly impact the overall experience?

Are there other hotel recommendations with at least one of these amenities (a kitchenette or free breakfast) in a safer or calmer area? Budget is around 400-500$ per night.

Finally, are there any neighborhoods you’d recommend for a first-time visit in May with family that still offer good transportation access?

Thanks in advance. Really appreciate any advice!

We are mostly locals here and while familiar with location/neighborhood of hotels, we are not familiar with rates on different booking platforms.

When you have your trip itinerary figured out, post it on this sub for feedback and fine turning.

2

u/jm14ed Local Feb 02 '26

I wouldn’t book a hotel through a third party. If you have a hotel you are interested in, book directly with them.

Hi everyone - I'm planning a trip to New York in May with my parents (3 people in total) and am getting slightly overwhelmed with finding a hotel. It'll be their first time there, and I want to treat them to a nice experience without going insanely expensive - would love some advice!

We're looking for a hotel that's clean, preferably closer to Central Park (we don't mind taking an Uber there), and most importantly, has AC/heating that isn't seasonally controlled. Budget is roughly around $800-$1,000 a night per room (I'll be booking two rooms for us per night).

I've looked into Park Central, the Manhattan Club, and a few more but all seem to have seasonally controlled AC. Then the price jumps dramatically for nicer places like the Fifth Avenue. Any recommendations, tips, or insights would be very much appreciated. Thank you so much in advance!

Hello everyone,

For a budget of about $400/night, what Marriott property would you recommend in the Times Square area? I have a number of reviews, and so far, The Courtyard-New York-Manhattan-Times Square-West seems to come out on top.

What other suggestions do people have based on their experience?

I'm open to non-brand hotels in the same price range, same location.

Thanks a lot.

2

u/VisitNYCmodx Feb 03 '26

As we are mostly locals we're not familiar with rates. If it has good reviews and it's in your desired location why not book>

Hi there - my brother and I are going to NYC in July for a concert at MSG. We've never been to New York City before, and so we are completely new to navigating subways, etc. I'm confident we can learn how to navigate with some research before and figuring it out there, but I would be SO grateful for any advice or help regarding possible options we should look into as far as where to get a hotel, specifically how far away from the venue is reasonable to walk or commute, etc, where to avoid, etc. We're ok not breaking the bank and being further away, but we just need to balance that with again not being super familiar with NYC. Thank you so much in advance!!

2

u/VisitNYCmodx Feb 06 '26

MSG is located at 33rd & 7th. Take a look at a google map with hotels and you will see plenty of options in/above/below that area. Keep in mind (approx) 20 blocks = 1 mile.

Hi guys!

Me and my brother (both under 18) are planning on taking a trip to NYC on the last week of February. Does anyone know any hotels that would allow minors to stay with parental consent or any alternatives? Looking to stay in Manhattan area.

In terms of location, any hotel in Manhattan is better because you don't have to schlep on the train so much. Is it that worth the $ to you?

Planning a long term vacation/summer school trip this July. My daughter will be attending a summer school program near the financial district and I will be hanging out playing tourist during the day while she studies. Thinking of staying midtown or below to keep the commute to school reasonable, but open to other ideas that might be more budget friendly. We need a place with a kitchen or kitchenette and something family friendly. Budget is $5800 for 28 days. Are there any hotels that might fit or are we looking at some kind of Airbnb ? If the latter please provide some tips on vetting a legal rental

Hi all,

I’m planning a 10–14 night trip from Australia for September 2027 - originally for the US Open. I know I can’t book that far out yet, so I’ve been using September 2026 as a rate benchmark (roughly 8 months out).

I previously stayed at Hotel Edison in 2015 and 2018 and paid around $2,100 USD total for ~10 nights. Looking at comparable September 2026 dates now, that same hotel is closer to $6,000+ USD. I understand it’s US Open season and that prices have changed a lot since I last stayedfor a number of reasons. What surprised me more is that when I backtracked to June 2026, rates were even higher, so it doesn’t seem like it’s just a tennis premium.

I’m trying to adjust expectations accordingly. Here's what I'm looking at:

Budget: $250–350 USD per night (roughly $3,500–$4,900 total for 14 nights before taxes/fees) (though anything less would be amazing).

Season: Prefer September for the US Open but I'm not bound to that event and am open to other months in the second half of the year if needed (ideally not Jan/Feb).

I'm considering other areas but don't know the other boroughs or even areas of Manhattan well, as I've only really stayed in Midtown. I'm open to them if the area is sold, and transit is simple. I don't want to be spending a ton in transit (that negates the savings on the hotel) or time, in that I'm losing hours a day.

Location preferences:

  • Safe area, especially at night
  • Easy subway access, into Manhattan
  • Midtown convenience was nice before, but I don’t need to be in Times Square specifically
  • Hotel only (no hostels).

There’s a possibility I could stay with a friend, but that isn’t confirmed and may not eventuate, so I’m planning as if I’ll be booking myself.

Would appreciate recommendations on neighbourhoods that fit that balance of cost, safety, and transit convenience (and hotels if you know some).

Thanks guys, I really do appreciate it.

u/jm14ed Local Feb 16 '26

I’d look in Long Island city if you are price conscious. Make sure the hotel is convenient to the 7 train.

Keep in mind that there are other events happening throughout most of the year that dictate hotel rates. For example, May/June is graduation season and also the beginning of the summer visitor season. So it's not just about the US Open driving rates up. For best value, early November is a good time.

i agree with long island city being an ideal neighborhood for you, especially if you’re planning on going to the u.s. open. between court square and queens plaza are a smattering of good chain hotels in a safe, trending area (lots of postgrads and young professionals). this area is also usually cheaper than most neighborhoods in manhattan, hotel-wise.

you have super easy access to the 7 train to get you to/from the tournament, and midtown manhattan is only a stop or 2 away. close to some excellent restaurants too.

I’m looking for pretty boutique hotel recommendations in New York.

I’m flexible on neighborhoods and I don’t necessarily need a spa or a pool. Ideally, I’d like to keep the rate around $800–$1,200 per night (or less). I won’t have a driver and am perfectly happy using public transit to get around.

Lately, I’ve been considering Fouquet’s, The Greenwich Hotel, and The Chatwal.

Hi guys! I will be traveling to NYC for a few days with one other friend. We are both female college students. I am inbetween two hotels, one is the Park Ave North (E 129th St) and Aloft Harlem (near W 124th St). Obviously the park ave north hotel is cheaper and that’s what we currently have booked. But I am wondering if it would be better to change to Aloft. It’s our first time in NYC and safety is a big thing we’re concerned about, although I do realize that the two hotels are not super far apart so I’m not sure if it’s a big difference. If anyone has other nearby recs please lmk but would you say Aloft is worth the price difference? We will be coming back to the hotel around 9 pm every night.

December can be so expensive. But even if you’re on a budget, I wouldn’t stay outside of Downtown Brooklyn or Williamsburg if you don’t know your way around. Check out the Pod Hotel in Williamsburg (everything else there is $$$$) and hotels near the Holiday Inn Brooklyn Downtown, where you can often find some deals.

Also check out Long Island City. It’s in Queens but pretty accessible to Brooklyn via the G train and very easy to Manhattan.

Hey everyone. I wanted opinions on 3 hotels i’m deciding on for a solo weekend trip late april early may. 1. the motto by hilton in times square 2. the pod times square hotel 3. the motto by hilton in the chelsea area When it comes to traveling, i like to stay in areas that are bustling but it’s my first time in new york and i’m worried that staying near times square is going to be the worst decision ever. Does anyone have advice or even hotel recs that aren’t so close to times square.

Dec 3–6 trip (40th birthday). Priorities: walk to Rockefeller Center (tree + skating), Broadway show, 5th Ave shopping, Central Park. Want boutique/Kimpton-style vibe, not huge convention hotel. Budget ~$500/night for those dates. Which hotels/blocks would you target for best walkability + vibe? Any to avoid?

Hi everyone - hope you're well!

I am visiting from Sydney Australia with a friend (2ppl) and would like to get some accommodation tips/tricks. Staying from 21 May to 27 May (6 nights, 7 days). Hoping to keep it closer to 250-300USD/night (is this reasonable?).

We have heard not to stay near Times Square but would love to stay somewhere relatively near, is NY walkable? We love walking, especially at night to see TS etc!

Have heard good things about Long Island City, Queens and Chelsea if anyone could share some insights?

P.S. any other tips for activities/tours would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

My husband and I are visiting for the first time in late September (about a week). We LOVE a good view so that’s important and our budget is ~850 a night, but somewhat flexible. We are planning on seeing a Mets game, a Yankees game, going to a couple broadway shows, exploring Central Park and eating delicious food (we really like good food), and seeing the Met and Moma and Coney Island maybe? I’m wondering, based on our interests/preferences where would be the best place to stay? Should we split the trip between hotels?
