Welp, I can't see how I'd disagree with anything in this review. I was hoping Insomniac at least learned how to make better boss fights after SM2. Guess I'm holding out for Control: Resonant after all.
Im drowning in games. I havent touched Pragmata but just finished Mortal shell 2 and alien firewteam elite 2 and bought onimusha yesterday and I got control later in the month and godzilla also... my poor wallet
For real! Join team "playing 2-3 years old games" you benefit from sales removing 20-50% of the initial cost without having to deal with FOMO of new releases
I stopped buying brand new games unless the plan is to play it immediately and I'm still working on my backlog. Buuut that backlog is no longer growing.
Now days, unless a game I'm interested in goes on sale for stupidly cheap (like Black Friday), I simply just can't think of a reason for buying a game for the backlog, especially at full price.
Pragmata suffered some of the same downfalls imo. I have no idea how it was widely received, but it felt sterile and aimed at kids to me. A little more arcade-y than I like. YMMV.
I still think I prefer Nioh 3… but that game also disappointed me as I thought it was a step down from Nioh 2, still just love the Nioh games. Onimusha bosses are so surprisingly well made though. Way too many AAA games rely on attack indicators on what attacks you can dodge, parry etc, so it’s refreshing to see a developer move away from that and make the few attacks than need to be countered a certain way more natural.
It’s great fun. Balancing isn’t great though.. regular enemies are too easy and kill animations slow pacing down. Bosses are significantly harder, by comparison anyways.
I’m really excited to get into Onimusha, but I must complete the others first, I’ve had them in my backlog for a while and I enjoyed the 15mins I did try with the first one.
For me Dawnwalker and First Light are GOTY worthy, both have me wanting to replay them straight away.
Control would be the icing on the cake, definitely considering picking that up over Wolverine now.
I absolutely loved Saros- just finished it last weekend and I was super hyped for Wolverine lining up perfectly. I cancelled my preorder yesterday and am between Dawnwalker and Onimusha while I wait for No Rest for the Wicked
if a damn physical copy would show up at stores in nyc i'd have gotten this days ago! might even double dip and get the ps5 version after getting the s2 version
Yeahhh, I was all in for supporting Firebreak until the so-so reviews. And then I got it for free, downloaded it, but never launched it. It just didn’t appeal to me at all despite the IP.
The demo was incredibly satisfying but I honestly felt underwhelmed with the difficulty. It was less about learning enemies and more about stomping them, if that makes sense? Does it get difficult?
The demo was really good, the only thing I'm disappointed in is that they pushed the release date ahead cuz it was releasing on my birthday at first lol
Onimusha, Mortal Shell 2, even Beast of Reincarnation (despite other negatives) looks to have better combat and exploration than this game. And Control Resonant is only two weeks away.
I was gonna get a physical copy but with Sony being modern Sony, I’m just gonna get it on steam. Edit: I was talking about control resonant here, not wolverine.
Oh man! No apologies necessary! I was actually responding to the original comment myself. Regardless, just wanted to help navigate this nonsense with Sony. As a guy who was there after Microsoft did what they did with Xbone, I was a major supporter.
That stopped shortly after the release of the ps5 and I moved to PC. Valve is just the GOAT
My current understanding is that he is actively teaching a protege who will assume the role once he either steps down or passes. It sounds like he's trying to get them on the same ideological philosophy about the company that he has.
Sadly I don’t expect them to actually try to keep his philosophy, but one can hope. Once Gabe is gone, they can do whatever they want. And we all know these companies just care about running it into the dirt for shareholders then washing their hands of it.
I mean I’m buying Sony physical games that seem important while I still can. I feel like the delay on physical was a Remedy choice, like with AW2. Maybe I’m mistaken tho.
None of these companies are going to wake up and become more consumer friendly, I fear. I'm over the big 3 in general, but I'll continue to support the studios and indie developers that put heart into the games. But yeahhh, miss me with a PS6 announcement.
Only thing I’d say is I saw someone say that all the handholding he complains about can be turned off in the settings.
I’d link to it but sometimes reddit hates linking to twitter so I’ll just paste what the tweet says:
“Okay... So you can turn off most of these HUD and accessibility options Skill Up is criticizing in his Wolverine Review. Insomniac’s official settings confirm: Mission waypoint icons: On / R3 Hint / Off → you can completely disable them. Navigation Assist: the directional trail/line leading you toward objectives is an accessibility feature, so you can leave it off. Tutorials & reminders: adjustable/disableable. Accessibility Audio Cues: On/Off, with separate volume control”
You can disagree by looking at the accessibility options listed on the Insomniac website for Wolverine. You can disable the navigation assist he felt so “patronized” about. Skill up is quite literally an idiot.
Insomniac should just go back to doing what they do best. Making ratchet and clank games.
The whole series of games (the ones developed by insomniac) are bangers. The OG ps2 quadrilogy, the future series, and now rift apart. All bangers. All fun to play. And genuinely so ripe for multiplayer type monetization. Genuinely a new full fledged RAC game with a lightly supported multiplayer scene would kill. Keep ratchet as a mascot too idk why he was dropped despite selling well.
Heck their latest game had like a 75% profit margin. I’d say that’s a win. Focus on this!!
Not to mention it’s clear that they are so skilled and can make a game as good as rift apart for only $80million. Like? Money in the bank! Crank em out every two years.
A very hand-holdy, linear game with very one dimensional combat is not worth my $80. No one wanted this game to be mid, but it’s a packed season and I’m going to buy the games that actually look good.
