xbox tho is giving their games to PS iirc, like Fable or Forza Horizon

112

u/Tricky_Concept_1496 Jun 03 '26

That's because, according to Xbox themselves, they don't see Sony or Nintendo as competitors. They're aiming higher and Microsoft has the money to do so.

85

u/No-Entertainment2085 Jun 03 '26

That’s corporate cope because series x/s isn’t selling.

55

u/tarchival-sage Jun 03 '26

I don’t see Usain Bolt as a competitor either. That does not make me the fastest man.

7

u/PartridgeInDisguise Jun 03 '26

Huh, you made me wonder if his record still stands, it feels kinda crazy that it still does. But actually looking at his times compared to others, it makes sense. He really was a once in a lifetime athlete.

1

u/TehTJ13 Jun 04 '26

If you broke both of Usain Bolt’s legs, I could run faster than him

1

u/tarchival-sage Jun 04 '26

I think that with prosthetic legs he would still win

1

u/TehTJ13 Jun 04 '26

You don’t typically have to amputate someone for a fracture

0

u/LessPirate24 Jun 04 '26

I mean if you think you’re so fast you don’t consider him a threat then damn we need to study you!

2

u/tarchival-sage Jun 04 '26

Does a baby consider a martial arts black belt a threat? I would be a baby crawling on the floor next to him.

21

u/Depreciable_Land Jun 03 '26

I mean sure but does it even need to with how well Game Pass and Steam sales are doing?

13

u/paganbreed Jun 03 '26

Think of it in corpo terms. They're doing well by our standards.

But shareholders aren't seeing line go up as much as they want.

13

u/Depreciable_Land Jun 03 '26

Shareholders love short term gains more than anything. Leaning into gutting console manufacturing and laying off everyone involved, consequences be damned, will produce a lot of short term gains.

2

u/ironangel2k4 Jun 05 '26

Welcome to enshittification

2

u/Commercial-Gap6280 Jun 06 '26

And frankly, the shareholders won't see the line go up as much as they want, pretty much no matter what any of these companies do. Endless, uninterrupted growth is unsustainable 🤷‍♂️ not to mention impractical, this late in the game.

1

u/paganbreed Jun 06 '26

To echo what I told someone else. Tell them that!

To be serious though, I genuinely don't see them learning any time soon. They won't be the ones suffering for it right now.

1

u/TheNewYellowZealot Jun 03 '26

Except subscription sales have a more significant impact on the line going up. Console sales are single term with no recurrence.

1

u/paganbreed Jun 04 '26

Tell them that!

2

u/VoltronChef Jun 03 '26

Game pass is a loss leader. It’s not making them any money.

2

u/_MrTaku_ Jun 04 '26

and it's all because of that stupid price increase! it was such an amazing subscription, they just had to ruin it and lose money

1

u/Splash_Woman Jun 03 '26

Me when i haven’t bought a PlayStation sense 2: “yeah, sure buddy.”

1

u/XulManjy Jun 04 '26

Which is why new leadership is looking into going back to exclusives.

1

u/MiserableTillTheEnd Jun 05 '26

I doubt it, I don’t think XBOX has ever really been about the consoles themselves, or at least not since they had XBOX live. I’m pretty sure after XBOX live everything became about selling games and subscriptions.

Now, while I will say, they are definitely financially hurting from buying all those games studios, I don’t believe they really have that much of an issue with people not buying the console, as long as they can pull you in through the subscriptions, some of their flagship games or the Microsoft store, they will be very happy.

Sadly, and this would disappoint me, but I actually don’t even think they’ll be making consoles as much longer, that’s what I’ve been afraid of it. It’s not that they are going to get rid of XBOX as a brand, but that they’re just gonna get rid of the consoles because that is a very Microsoft thing to do.

1

u/Dragneel4400 Jun 05 '26

You don't need to sell consoles in the long run. You make a lot more money from all the game purchases. And when they are available on all platforms you make even more money... It's almost as if the more places there are to buy something, the more you sell, eg the more money you make.🤯🤯🤯🤯

1

u/Good_Boy_Coleman Jun 06 '26

People say Xbox lost the console wars but the thing is consoles make you lose money. Xbox has made more money than Sony since the 360 every year without fail. PlayStation may be more popular but it has been losing tons of money constantly while Xbox is right they make more than Sony and Nintendo won't expand anymore not really making them ever a big competitor against Xbox.

1

u/UnscrambledEggUDG Jun 08 '26

Honestly it's actually a good play. Consoles are usually loss leaders

1

u/OMGZombiePirates Jun 03 '26

They don't don't care if series x/s sells. They care if Xbox Game Pass sells. It's their entire model at this point.

-1

u/Open-Gas-790 Jun 03 '26

They are building an ecosystem, thats why valve has invested an insane amount of money and resources into making linux viable with gaming

4

u/EternitySearch Jun 03 '26

Microsoft is just banking on software sales outpacing hardware sales in the coming years, that’s all.

1

u/yakityyakblahtemp Jun 05 '26

Which is an interesting pivot considering we're in the "download one game for free and play it forever" era.

1

u/EternitySearch Jun 05 '26

Microsoft bought Bethesda. Bethesda has released Skyrim and Fallout 4 on PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, Steam Deck, and PSVR. People are still buying both games and there are a lot of people who have bought those games on multiple systems. That’s not unique to Bethesda games, either.

We aren’t really in a “download once, play forever,” kind of world. We’re in a “buy multiple times” kind of world.

8

u/ChungusReaper Jun 03 '26

Xbox can pretend to see whatever they want to see, Sony is their number one direct competitor lol.

The real reason they give games to PS is because they can boost game sales by opening their games to the other 45% of the market. Full stop that’s it. Sony already has half the console market share, trying to chip away at that is near useless without some actual competitive hardware edge.

Might as well dip your fingers in their pot instead.

1

u/XulManjy Jun 04 '26

For now. New leadership is pondering the idea of going back to full exclusives.

1

u/ChungusReaper Jun 04 '26

They probably will, because it’s a new console generation cycle. They will roll back to exclusive only for the first year or two of the new consoles’ releases, then they will bring their games to PS again once they realize Sony still has 44% of the console market share.

1

u/Ch3ru Jun 04 '26 edited Jun 04 '26

Half? We're just forgetting Nintendo then huh.

Ignore this lol, I was tired and read "half" as "one of two halves" (as stated below)

0

u/SecretaryOtherwise Jun 04 '26 edited Jun 04 '26

Lol nintendo is not in competition. Next gen theyll be forgotten about again while their brand new console struggles.

They do their own thing for better or worse.

Like its kinda a massive cope if yall think it'll run ff7-3 for example or cyber punk 2 lmao.

2

u/ChungusReaper Jun 04 '26

Nintendo’s customer demographic is also a bit different than Microsoft or Sony.

2

u/Ch3ru Jun 04 '26

Not in competition. Right. That's why Nintendo copies Sony and Microsoft's console hardware innovations every generation. Oh wait...

0

u/SecretaryOtherwise Jun 04 '26 edited Jun 04 '26

Hey we get it you like the switch. Its not competing with consoles or pc sorry not sorry.

Nintendo doesnt even really advertise its games lmfao. Outside pokemon or say Mario or Zelda you never even know when a new game releases 😂

They literally do "their own thing" for better or worse. And again. When they need to strip every thing from the game to make it run on switch 2 aka cyberpunk and ff7 rebirth, they are not in competition lmao. When next gen releases again switch wont be able to handle it and will be forgotten and only used for nintendo exclusives.

Also enjoy subbing to 5 different things just to have access to their entire library lmao.

3

u/Ch3ru Jun 04 '26

Actually yknow what I was super tired yesterday and my brain read "half" as "one of two halves". Mea culpa.

That said, Nintendo is still moving the needle in certain areas of console hardware, even if they are still in their Nintendo walled garden. If they weren't, Sony and Microsoft would be making their own peripherals before Nintendo did all the R&D risk-taking first. Without the Wii U iterating into the Switch, we'd likely have no Steam Deck, ROG Ally X, PS Portal, etc etc.

0

u/e105beta Jun 05 '26

You do realize that the success of a gaming company isn't tied to how powerful their box is, right?

1

u/SecretaryOtherwise Jun 05 '26 edited Jun 05 '26

You realize if it cant play current games no ones gonna wanna fuck with it lmao.

If yall didnt care about non nintendo exclusives those games I mentioned wouldnt have sold well 😂

And when the hardware is as expensive as an entry level pc now....well youre making a choice. Last point. The reason why everyone's bitching is becasue we were finally moving past exclusives minus fuck boi nintendo. So I could play 90% of the games i wanted on one fucking system.

1

u/PhatTuna Jun 03 '26

Has the money to do what? Just be another 3rd party publisher like SEGA?

1

u/KenneR330 Jun 04 '26

They sell games, not hardware

1

u/Leading-Ad4637 Jun 08 '26

Microsoft having money has nothing to do with it... they didnt get most of their money from consoles its literally in the company name. They made most of their money by developing and selling software like this one you may have heard of... windows and get this its been the leading operating system pretty much everywhere in the world for a very long time. Microsoft isn't trying to compete with Sony in terms of exclusives because they CANT they don't sell enough consoles to justify the exclusivity thats why they had to open their doors to not only steam but now sony themselves

0

u/MaxProwes Jun 03 '26

Or they are idiots who completely devalued their console.

0

u/Tastee92 Jun 03 '26

Well Microsoft and Xbox has a habit of hype things up and then fails to deliver said hype

0

u/xcmgaming360 Jun 04 '26

its because ps5 is wiping the floor with xbox

2

u/ParsonsTheGreat Jun 03 '26

The new CEO has stated that they "are going to take another look at exclusives" or something similar. It would make sense to backtrack if Xbox is getting Steam. I do find it funny the amount of PlayStation fans that are cool with Sony backtracking from PC, but are not cool with Xbox backtracking from PS. Some of them really want to have their cake and eat it, too lol

3

u/_MrTaku_ Jun 03 '26

console wars are still a thing but I'm happy they're kinda slowly dissipating

2

u/Tricky_Concept_1496 Jun 03 '26

Console wars won't truly be over until Nintendo puts their stuff on other systems.

1

u/_MrTaku_ Jun 03 '26

lmao true

1

u/Sir_Gigglepoop Jun 04 '26

It's because the deals are already made. Money is payed and otherwise Sony would sue them into oblivion.

1

u/Savings_Spite2667 Jun 05 '26

It's because Sony is to hungry for money, it's the same reason they fought so hard against the Microsoft acquisition of Activisionblizzard, primarily for cod as it is their highest profit venue.

They refuse to play nice and Xbox is attempting to pull out of the console wars by making their system more of a pc vs a console hence the deal with steam.

If Sony didn't have tunnel vision for monet they could have profited more.

1

u/daandrro Jun 06 '26

Not so much anymore since Sharma joined.
They are reviewing policy of releasing on other platforms again. Probably will come back to exclusives for many titles.

1

u/ConstantFrogLoss Jun 09 '26

Xbox is selling Game Pass, at this point, and is part of a broader Microsoft business plan that does not rely on the console itself selling

-1

u/PassivelyAwkward Jun 03 '26

Xbox needs Playstation and Steam to be relevent; Playstation doesn't need either.
