PC gamers are upset that Sony will no longer be putting first party single player games on Steam, despite said software not selling all that well on PC to begin with.

40

u/snackelmypackel Jun 03 '26

The games released more than a year later with no marketing, at full price. If they released it same day i think it would a massive difference. If youve already waited a year for a game you can wait another few months for it to be on sale.

15

u/Ghostrider28389 Jun 03 '26

This it’s what the and what the one below me says poor optimization and that it releases later when the hype has died down is why they never do well

9

u/Suave_Senpai Jun 03 '26

Throwback to Ghost of Tsushima releasing on PC with a game breaking audio bug that was basically unavoidable on the penultimate mission, where you get to enjoy the sound of breaking ice permanently being blasted in your ears while fighting the big bad you've been after all game long, even in the cut scenes. Released in 2024, and then the "hot" fix for it didn't come until this last Christmas lmao.

11

u/Nnamz Jun 03 '26

This is exactly it.

Literally the people bitching about this are the exact same PC players who only buy stuff on extreme discount. Sony is already losing 33% to Valve, and on top of that, PC players refuse to pay MSRP while the games sell 8x better on PlayStation.

If PC players actually bought the games they would still be there. It's not even worth the porting effort and damage to their brand if PC players only buy games at an extreme discount lol.

18

u/Sharkaw Jun 03 '26

Why would PC gamers buy 2-3 years old games for $70?

7

u/Grand-Philosophy-343 Jun 03 '26

When was the last time u spent $70 on a game?

7

u/OmenDamien Jun 03 '26

The answer is never 🤣

When crimson desert dropped.

1

u/se777enx3 Jun 03 '26

I just did with forza but I admit I rarely do it. Usually I wait for discounts or buy straight from key sites if the price difference is big.

1

u/General-Treacle6718 Jun 03 '26

i bought forza horizon 6 for 120, re9 for 70, and ill buy onimusha for 70 when it comes out.

8

u/Nnamz Jun 03 '26

For the same reason that PlayStation gamers bought FIVE MILLION COPIES of Forza Horizon 5 on PS5 despite it being even older than that - because it's new to them.

But the more pertinent question is why would Sony bother investing in a platform where Gabe takes 30% and the gamers are only going to buy the game when it's $40 or less?

And the answer at this point is that they wouldn't, at least not anymore. It's not worth it.

3

u/Sharkaw Jun 03 '26

Nothing was stopping them from making their own storefront.

7

u/HeyIDoubtIt Jun 03 '26

PC gamers literally shit their diapers if a game isn't on Steam dude c'mon now lol

6

u/Nnamz Jun 03 '26

Epic literally gives away free games on their storefront and nobody uses it. That's what's stopping them. There's literally no point. It's all damage to PlayStation for hardly any profit since 99.999% of PC customer spend is on Steam, where the vast majority of PC gamers wait for steep steam sales before buying anything.

No matter how you slice it, it was the correct business move for them.

2

u/Wardock8 Jun 03 '26

I've seen people say they'd rather buy something ful price on Steam than get it free on Epic. If it's not Steam or GOG them PC boys deadass just won't touch it lol.

0

u/whats-reddit17 Jun 03 '26

Maybe if the epic game store wasn't dogshit people would use it more.

1

u/ConstantFrogLoss Jun 09 '26

Have you ever tried it and played any of the free games from it?

1

u/whats-reddit17 Jun 09 '26

Every interaction I have with EGS makes me mad. Every 2-4 weeks I have to re log in. The download speeds are just slower for some reason. And when I try and use a code for a game beta it doesn't work through epic.

1

u/Sharkaw Jun 03 '26

Epic's storefront is still lacking basic functions to this day.

2

u/Nnamz Jun 03 '26

No arguments here. But so is PlayStations.

-3

u/Vegetable-Meaning413 Jun 03 '26

It probably is worth it, but Playstation executives are dumbest people on the planet. Remember the guys who greenlight Concord and bought Bungie are still in charge.

6

u/Nnamz Jun 03 '26

It is not worth it. Numbers are public. 15x less profit on PC while actively damaging the PS brand.

Also Jim Ryan greenlit both of these things and is no longer in the company.

But yes, no arguments here. They haven't finished cleaning house yet imo.

1

u/kiefenator Jun 03 '26

I see the "damaging the PlayStation brand" argument but I don't really understand it.

4

u/Nnamz Jun 03 '26 edited Jun 03 '26

It's just me being unclear. My bad.

If Sony puts their games on PC, it pushes the most hardcore players with the most disposable income towards PC. On PC players aren't just exposed to some PlayStation games, they have a choice to buy 3rd party games there as well, which causes Sony not to get a cut of those sales at all. And overall, a consumer knowing that all big PS games will be on PC, will likely consider getting a PC over a PlayStation, reducing their day 1 sales of games on PS5 while also preventing them from getting billions of dollars from the 30% cut they get when those gamers buy games on PSN. Sony is losing a ton of potential customers due to this. It devalues their brand.

Knowing that a ton of the most high budget AAA games are only playable on their hardware and on their ecosystem, in contrast, bolsters their brand.

-1

u/10minOfNamingMyAcc Jun 03 '26

I mean, no one wants to play or even remembers a game from 2-3 years ago where they know the story off already. But there definitely are people who love to have these games, to play them or even just... collect them.

I couldn't care less myself. These stories are usually very similar / reskinned stories. Not to mention that the games are expensive and replaying a story-focused game is usually... not something I enjoy.

4

u/Nnamz Jun 03 '26

You're just adding more reasons why they were right to exit. It doesn't matter the why. Releasing day and date would kill PS the same way it killed Xbox as a brand. Releasing a year or so later results in no sales. So just pull out and double down on the brand. Nintendo is doing that and they're fine.

0

u/lordofmetroids Jun 03 '26

Counter question then.

Why does Take Two or Bandai or any publisher release a game on PlayStation if they are going to charge the exact same percentage that Steam does.

Complaining about the 30% means nothing to me when Sony does the exact same thing.

4

u/Nnamz Jun 03 '26

Because they do not have a console. Their entire business model depends on an existing hardware ecosystem.

It's also not just about the 30% cut. It's an important part of the full equation, as I've clearly laid out. The most important other part is that putting games on PC damages the PS brand. That is tolerable if they're making a ton of money or selling a ton of units. They are not, though. It is not worth it.

2

u/MetaDeviant0189 Jun 03 '26

Why does a game being 2-3 years old inherently decrease it's value? It's not like it's a car or a house that suffers from wear and tear.

5

u/AdWaste8026 Jun 03 '26

Because that’s the expectation created by the industry: games get cheaper over time. Would you pay 80 bucks for God of War from 2005?

Don’t forget that the same games can be bought more cheaply on PS at the time of the PC release, decreasing its perceived value.

And to add to that, by not releasing lots of games on PC historically, or by releasing them years later, Sony is trying to sell these games full price to people who have learned to wait. If you already waited 2 years for GOW Ragnarock or a decade for TLOU, what’s waiting another one for a sale?

2

u/EddPW Jun 03 '26

well to play devils advocate a 20 year old game is pretty outdated

a 2 year is game is not

3

u/AdWaste8026 Jun 03 '26

It is, yes, which supports my point: an older game is expected to be cheaper because, among other things, it loses relative value compared to newer products.

2

u/EddPW Jun 03 '26

yeh... but youre not using good examples

why should god of war ragnarok lower its price when its quality is still very much acceptable by modern standards

you lower the price of 20 year games because their modern alternatives offer more and better things

so yeh it loses relative value but not in 2 years

2

u/AdWaste8026 Jun 03 '26

You're approaching it strictly from a qualitative perspective, but that's not the only factor in determining the perceived value of games.

As I said before, the fact that the game is cheaper on PS at time of PC release decreases the perceived value of the game. If it can be bought for 40 on PS, why would PC players accept 70 in droves?

It is also simply the result of competition for attention. New releases benefit from newness and fomo regarding the release cycle. Older games, even from 2 years ago, need discounts to attract attention again. Sony also doesn't market their PC releases very much.

And back to the qualitative argument: GOW Ragnarok is quite similar to GOW 2018, which is 8 years old already. Innovation and quality has stalled in general, so there is less "added value" by being a newer title in that regard compared to generations past.

And by the way, Ragnarok is already 3.5 years old at this point, nearing 4 years. It still hasn't been below 40 bucks on sale. The Witcher 3 had gone below that after only months after release already for example.

Sony is a bit slow with regards to discounts compared to industry standards, which is entirely their right & probably related to keeping brand value high, but they shouldn't at the same time be surprised that sales have been poor.

1

u/Tactical_Squishy Jun 03 '26

if there's a game im interested in and I can't buy it i will watch it on YouTube for example.

but after I have watched it all I'm hardly going to buy it especially full price

1

u/MetaDeviant0189 Jun 03 '26

I'm not saying it's necessarily wrong that games should get cheaper the older they are, I'm just pointing out there's no logical reason it should happen intrinsically or (like I said in my original comment) inherently. You're right that it's because it's an expectation created by the industry, but that's all it is. Ultimately your argument boils down to "just because!"

1

u/AdWaste8026 Jun 03 '26

I find it quite reductive to reduce the psychology of economic decisions, under which both purchasing and sales decisions fall, as "that's all it is" and "just because".

There is also no objective/inherent truth with regards to value and hence pricing, as it is always a function of perceived value, which can shift regardless of the unchangedness of a thing.

In a world where God of War 2018 exists, God of War 2005 becomes less attractive and therefore reduces in value, even if the latter hasn't changed. And this happens across the industry all the time. Or even beyond gaming as a whole. Horse carriages as a product category lost value when cars were invented, even if horse carriages themselves did not change.

Beyond a simple qualitative argument, there is also simply the fact that there are both limited means and gaming hours to be spent on gaming. In an environment where there are constantly more competitors, older products needs to need to drop their price to remain competitive as newly released games benefit from newness & fomo to attract attention.

And beyond even that, from the supply side, meaning developers and publishers, sales and lower prices are simply a way to go down the demand curve and extract the producer surplus they didn't get a the original price point.

So there's a myriad of reasons why games get cheaper that are all logical.

-1

u/AnNel216 Jun 03 '26

This is something PC players don't get. I have a PC, PS5 and Switch 2. I primarily PC game for games that are either
1) On Xbox cause they always come to PC and fuck Xbox or
2) To play with friends.

3

u/FistingFishes Jun 03 '26

I think it’s a vocal minority complaining about PS games not coming to PC. I couldn’t even tell you what PlayStation exclusives there are, and there’s not a single game I’ve felt to buy a PlayStation for. This is coming from a dude that grew up on PS1 and PS2.

2

u/AnNel216 Jun 03 '26

I've got my exclusives and a few games my PC couldn't run 'well like Oblivion Remaster and Monster Hunter Wilds

3

u/Moo-Mungus Jun 03 '26

Am I missing something or does that make sense? Doesn't porting a complex AAA game cost lots of money, and if they're not evens selling well they should stop altogether?

2

u/EddPW Jun 03 '26

less money than you think

1

u/Tactical_Squishy Jun 03 '26

it costs more making sure it doesn't run on pc in the first place

1

u/Forward_Arrival8173 Jun 03 '26

PC players and steam deck players are so annoying, hateful and toxic I am glad they don't get the best games anymore

1

u/Suave_Senpai Jun 03 '26

Funnily enough, most exclusives are unremarkable nowadays.

0

u/Tactical_Squishy Jun 03 '26

mate "sony" players are cheering for anti consumers practices and steam players are the toxic ones?

1

u/Raptori33 Jun 03 '26

Steam fans are very oblivious in general

-3

u/spazzxxcc12 Jun 03 '26

not to mention the poor optimization and creative control over their own games, since people love to remove some stuff using mods. quit being shocked sony wants to do this.

3

u/Hyper_Mazino Jun 03 '26

Most Sony ports were pretty good, what are you talking about?

And really, making mods out to be a bad thing? Lmao. Yes, you can do dumb shit like that mod. But you can also do tons of amazing mods. See Baldurs Gate 3, Skyrim, Witcher etc

0

u/Tactical_Squishy Jun 03 '26

no they weren't?

-4

u/spazzxxcc12 Jun 03 '26

bro just take half a second, google stuff like tlou pc port issues. spiderman pc port issues, got pc port issues (it had a lot of crashes)

the list is pretty fairly long. a lot of them get fixed eventually, but they start off pretty abysmal.

4

u/Hyper_Mazino Jun 03 '26 edited Jun 03 '26

Oh so you mean a bunch of reddit posts, cool!

Most Sony ports were absolutely great from a technical pov.

0

u/spazzxxcc12 Jun 03 '26

they aren’t just reddit posts lol but alright. theres so many articles and youtube videos about the issues present in these ports.

2

u/Nnamz Jun 03 '26

The list isn't that long.

TLOUP2 was good. Tsushima was good. Helldivers was good. Spider-Man 1 was good. Miles Morales was good. Horizon was good. Forbidden West was good. Helldivers was good. Marathon was good. Uncharted was good. Death Stranding 1 was good. Death Stranding 2 was good. Days Gone, Returnal, God of War, God of War Ragnarok, Sackboy, Ratchet & Clank? All good.

They had a couple of rough ports but lets not pretend that was the norm.

0

u/DaemonsMercy Jun 03 '26

Wait, really? I thought ps games were generally loved, even on pc (horizon, gow, spiderman, tsushima, etc)

0

u/Tactical_Squishy Jun 03 '26

pc has much more competition of games so the standards are a bit higher so cookie cutter games are not as well received

0

u/Curious_Fix3131 Jun 03 '26

not selling well?

3

u/Dark_Lord4379 Jun 03 '26

Sony showed the comparisons of the money they make from their exclusives on PlayStation compared to Steam and it was like 15:1 or some shit. Plus, with the Steam Machine and Xbox Helix, they need SOME way of keeping customers.

u/AdWaste8026 Jun 03 '26

It’s even more than that: why would I buy an expensive Spiderman 2 at all if I still haven’t played Spiderman 1?

This could be a factor in why the sequels sold less.

1

u/Dark_Lord4379 Jun 03 '26

Like I said I’m not saying I support it, but regardless they don’t care. You said you’d only pay for it at a cheaper price (which is reasonable) but to them that’s just not worth it since they’d be making far less than a PS purchase

1

u/Curious_Fix3131 Jun 03 '26

where did they show it

1

u/Dark_Lord4379 Jun 03 '26

I honestly wish I could tell you, I only saw it back when they first announced they were stopping steam releases and it was because a YouTuber had dug it up from somewhere

0

u/Tactical_Squishy Jun 03 '26

exclusives are bad for the consumers my question here is why you defending them.

also pc sales are over the previsions, if you release old games with a shitty porting and full price, who tf is going to buy it Also the PC market has standards a bit higher than the console one so they will not get received as well

1

u/DegenerateCrocodile Jun 03 '26

I’m not defending or criticizing exclusives as a concept in that comment. It’s known that Sony’s first party titles did not sell nearly as much on PC as they did on their own hardware, leading to Sony to stop porting their single player games to PC. It’s a business decision that Sony is clearly hoping leads to more consumers sticking with PlayStation in the next generation.

1

u/Tactical_Squishy Jun 03 '26

also the only game they released simultaneously had 65% of the market share on pc
