What is your cleaning routine?

So, how does everyone approach regular cleaning and maintenance?

How often does your entire horn get a bath? What's your routine for cleaning and lubing your slide?

Got any favorite cleaners or lubes?

What are your go to tools?

Mouthpiece cleaning?

What do you use on your rotors?

Is there anything you think most people miss in taking care of their horn? Why is this important?

I'm sure younger members here would love the insight.

Tubing for traveling

To keep my embouchure in shape, i got 10 feet of tubing and my mouthpiece and brought them on vacation. (I really don't like just buzzing on the mouthpiece.)

Since it's not conical, the partials are all very stretched, so it's terrible for intonation. A funnel on the end didn't help.

I got bored with bugle notes, so I cut a hole about 11% of the way down, so i could get a whole step. (That's 2^(-2/12) for you math and physics people).

It's 3/8 inch ID vinyl tubing.

When i got back from vacation, i still sucked at trombone.

Advice for getting back into trombone after not playing for awhile?

Hello peoples. So I’m 21 and haven’t played trombone since highschool. I’ve really wanted to pick it back up for a while now but don’t really know where to begin.

Im currently in my first year of community college and wanted to try and get good enough to get into the symphony band at my school. I don’t own a trombone yet and I’m super rusty. My school also offers private classes that you can take. What would be the best course of action to take?

Bass trombone doubling on tuba advice

• Upvotes

What tips do you all have for a lifelong trombone player looking to get better at tuba for professional jazz and theater gigs? I’m especially interested in any air ideas or mouthpiece tips. I play on a Hammond 20BXL on my bass right now.

Alt. Positions with F attachment?

I got a "big kid" trombone later in my musical life, and I still don't know a huge amount about it. Can you play stuff higher than C3 with the F attachment, or is there some problem with that?

I ask because I'm playing a piece in community orchestra with a phrase that would be way easier if I could play D3 with the trigger in (I'm still clumsy at disengaging it quickly) but no position chart shows any trigger stuff above the C3 partial, which makes me think it isn't something people do.

So I finally changed from clarinet to trombone. This is day 2 and I can (poorly) make sound Bb2, F3 and Bb3 (all in first position). Is this decent for day 2??

Trigger trombone recommendations?

I was thinking of getting a Bach 42BO Stradivarius, since it’s the one I had in my high school’s wind ensemble. For jazz band I just had a Bach Student Tenor trombone, but instead of getting two separate trombones, for now I just want a trigger trombone that’s good for both classical and jazz music, whatever price. Does anyone have any models they’d recommend?

Help me solve the age mystery!

Hi!

I recently bought an old Amati trombone on an auction and I'm trying to figure out the age of it. Hopefully someone out there might be able to help me?

The trombone came in a case marked with AKHütttle on a velvet ribbon. The trombone has only the text "Amati Kraslice" on its bell, and no serial number. Only markings is stamped on the slide receiver, 18 on one side and what can be 11 on the other.

The trombone has some nice engravings on it.

I know that AKHüttle was absorbed into Amati during the postwar era, but since I know nothing of the trombone's history I don't know if the case and the trombone belongs together.

I have attached a lot of images and hope that someone out there can help me put the case and the trombone in the right "time-zone" (i.e. fifties, sixties etc). If there is any more specific detail that need to be photographed I can upload some more pictures also.

Original? Refurbished? Relacquered?

I just came across a vintage Selmer Signet trombone listed for $207 USD. I’d like to know if it’s worth buying based on the photos alone. Does the instrument appear to have its original lacquer and finish, or does it look like it has been refurbished or relacquered?

I’d really appreciate your insights, especially from those familiar with vintage Selmer Signet trombones. Do you think it’s a good buy at this price? Thank you!

Is this an 18H and what is its history?

Hi all, I just picked this Conn 18H (?) up today as I wanted a small straight horn for jazz, however when I looked into it, I can’t exactly figure out what it is.

It says 18H all over however it doesn’t have the copper colour bell ,is this hidden under the lacquer or a different spec with a yellow bell?

Also the brace flanges don’t match between the tuning slide and rest of bell section

I’ve shown all the engravings and the serial number is 414230, also the bell is 8” if that helps

I only picked it up for £50 and it plays really nicely but I thought it’d be interesting to know its history, where it’s made, whether it’s been modified and what age it is.

Many thanks in advance and sorry if I’m being stupid :)

Mouthpiece Upgrade

Hi everyone,

I am looking for advice on switching to a new mouthpiece. My current Schilke 52D is getting old and scratched up from how much I use it. While it still plays fine overall, I have been using it for over two and a half years and feel it might be time to upgrade.

I haven’t looked into many mouthpieces yet, and I am not entirely sure what features to look for in an upgrade. However, I have been eyeing the Denis Wick Heritage series. I am concerned about the thin rim profile around the top—will it affect my playing or comfort?

I would greatly appreciate your advice and suggestions!"

Distorted weight distribution by mute

When playing with a practice mute, my hand starts hurting because of the extra weight tilting my horn forward. I like to add extra counterweight (but only when I use the mute). Any tips how to do this?

Help me choose a new horn

Hello! I am a high school bass trombonist. I am in need of a new* horn due to main slide damage on my current hand-me-down horn. I need a double trigger bass trombone and have been looking in the $2000 area. Please comment any recommendations you might have as well as any insight on the Wessex PBF562 and Dillion Music Bass Trombone which are horns I have been considering.

*I’m open to used horns however I’ve looked at many and had no success. So, try to lean into new horn recommendations in your response. Thank you!

Trombone Champ Like Method for beginner ?

Hey everyone,

Like many of you, I had a blast playing Trombone Champ when it came out. But as anyone who has actually held a horn knows, it treats the trombone like a linear synthesizer: moving up just raises pitch continuously, completely ignoring how the instrument actually works (the harmonic series, overtone jumps, and real slide positions).

I’ve been working on a prototype for an interactive visualizer/game-like interface designed to let complete beginners play songs on a real trombone immediately, without having to sight-read bass clef or know music theory on day one.

Instead of traditional notation or an inaccurate pitch-slider, the UI is built directly around trombone kinematics:

  • The Y-axis represents actual slide extension (Positions 1 to 7): Position 1 (closed) is at the bottom, Position 7 (full reach) is at the top. Crucially, the lane spacing is physically non-linear to match acoustic realities.
  • Colors guide the embouchure / harmonic series: Since multiple notes share the same slide position, notes are color-coded by partial tension (Deep Blue = relaxed low partials ==> Bright Red = firm, high register embouchure).
  • Visual cues for articulation & breath: Notes feature a dynamic glow/halo indicating required breath support, and striped borders warn you ahead of fast passages that require double-tonguing (Ta-Ka / Da-Ga).

Before going any further with code and features (like Real-time microphone pitch-tracking), I wanted to take the pulse of the community:

  1. As players or teachers, do you think this kind of "ear & physical mechanics first" visual aid could help get beginners hooked, or is it a bad detour?
  2. What would be the biggest red flags or physical habits you'd worry about reinforcing with an app like this?

I'd love to hear your honest thoughts, critique, or feature suggestions. Thanks!
The App is in french, but it could be translate easily.
