The Block - Season 22, Episode 44 - Backyard and Garage 3 (Live Discussion)

Plays Clubbed to Death in disgust once again.

I have tried to figure out how the hell I write the OP for this thread because what do I say after last night? What the actual hell do I say? When Production causes drama that is so pathetic where they throw one of the contestants under the bus for raising a legitimate concern to cause it and in the process cause a complete and other shit storm with everybody else that was wholly unnecessary and all of this began mind you because production allowed effectively strangers to the other teams into a share house without running the idea by any of the other teams that would be involved.

I’m beyond angry. Channel 9 created an unsafe working environment for Chantel all because they wanted drama for their reality show. I have been watching for 15 years as I noted last night. I have never before felt so disgusted angry and repulsed by what production had done, every member of production that thought telling the contestants Chantel was the one who raised the concerns of their of discomfort should be utterly ashamed of themselves.

You have said before that the drama on the show is so natural that you don’t need to get involved and cause any. Well guess what, last night, You broke that ideal and did it in such a way that is beyond acceptable.

And that’s not the only thing that I’m going to despise the show for tonight. We have a challenge with AI music at the forefront of it. We live in a nation of incredible music talent. It feels pathetic that we need to use AI for backing on a karaoke challenge. If the teams wrote the lyrics and had instrumental backing created by people it would be fine, the way you have portrayed it to be though in the promos? No. Flat out. No.

Folks, I’m gonna be honest with you. I am not looking forward to this episode already, and I almost forgot that we’ve still got Courtney and Jolene‘s argument from last night to resolve among whatever else is aired. I’m not gonna do my let’s hope we enjoy the show spiel because it feels completely insincere, just let’s get through it and I then hope you all have a nice Thursday and weekend and when we come here on Sunday we’ve had enough of a break that we’re all refreshed and ready to go. I just hope you all have had a decent day everyone.

The Block - Season 22, Episode 43 - Backyard and Garage 2 (Live Discussion)

Escape Pod goes up the Dreamworld Tower, transition to a circle forming the logo of Dreamworld.

Tonight on The Block - Tensions explode in a share house reckoning, the girls and Jolene go to battle over a wine cellar, and it’s body corporate time once again on The Block.

Good evening everyone! Yes, it’s once again feeling with Big Brother with the sharehouse dramas largely overshadowing everything in regard to the actual build and renovation aspect of the show.

Honestly though, I think all we genuinely want is for there not to be the sheer level of AI there was last night. It was excessive to the point of utterly ridiculous, let’s hope they’ve toned it massively back or otherwise aren’t using it at all, and that the show be entertaining and enjoyable for us all to watch.

THE BLOCK NEEDS NEW JUDGES!!!!!!!

The Block seriously needs new judges. They’ve been there for way too long, and it’s time for some fresh faces and different opinions. The judging feels so predictable now, and it often seems like they have their favourites. A new judging panel would bring a fresh perspective and make the competition fairer and more interesting to watch.

After watching the past couple of weeks, who could blame Chantel & Wyatt for not wanting to associate with some of these people.

I would think Rick, Tayla, Courtney & Sev are now regretting keeping in contact and communicating with the people from Houses 1 & 3, if they have been watching the same footage as we are seeing.

Chantel was not only put in an uncomfortable living situation by the contestants (I too would feel exactly the same as her if I was forced to share a bathroom with 3 random men), but then to be used as a scapegoat for everyone else's grievances by production and Scotty, was just horrendous.

I say good on them for not showing up and associating with these people, at least they are not trying to pretend it's all happy families, when clearly, it is not.

Is someone doing damage control for Scotty in response to the recent shitshow?

So a few days ago I made an offhand comment on a post here that Scotty follows Pauline Hanson on his official public Instagram. Someone dm’d me about it so I actually took a screenshot to verify.

Today I had a look and guess what, he no longer follows her. He’s also dropped three other follows but tbh I didn’t look that closely the first time to be able to know who else is missing now.

How interesting 🤪

Media personality’s political views are their private business…until they advertise them on their official public social media, so reckon this is fair game.

Question Why does this sub like Chantel and Wyatt?

Those two seem like the absolute worst type of people yet this sub seem to have a massive thing for them. Can some one please explain that

Taylah has finally won me over.

I’ve not been a fan of Taylah this season, seeing her as flippant & lazy. Yet due to her good nature I was prepared to believe the problem may be an attention deficit. She clearly has problems completing the task at hand & staying focussed long enough to achieve something regardless that they struggle to complete a space every week. Still she refuses to pitch in & help with the insulating & painting - 2 things anyone can do. Rick needs to be free to attend to major installations & building but he says nothing to her & instead tries to do everything himself. Unfortunately they seem unable to learn from their mistakes & actually finish a room thoroughly.
Yet given all that, Taylah’s sunny disposition continues to beam. It was a joy to see her with that Chef tonight. People genuinely seem to warm to her in person, even if they do admit she’s crazy! I’ll admit that I may’ve judged her too harshly.

At least I laughed watching tonight’s episode Thanks to her & of course Libby. The wacky Cherryoke challenge didn’t hurt either.
& then to see a challenge go to Ross & Lisa at the appropriate time (awesome coincidence that the 2 brokest Houses won challenges tonight 😉) was kind of heart warming too. I did feel for her/them with the Trades Bill & sauna situ. A totally different Block than last night TF!

Two things can be true at once, + unquestioning allegiance

It’s been talked about a lot already, but it’s been mostly people taking a firm stance on either side - so to those people, I hope you read ahead.

I wholeheartedly sympathise with DV survivors and advocate almost daily. Though I want to make an important distinction here, because two things can be true at once.

Firstly, your experience of DV is valid, and nobody gets to dictate how you should feel about your own trauma. I’m genuinely sorry to anyone who’ve experienced that, and I would never minimise the lasting effects it can have. But equally, sympathising with a DV survivor does not mean automatically agreeing with every action they take, nor does it make them immune from criticism. Two very different things.

From what we saw, there is a significant difference between acknowledging that Jolene has a difficult past and accepting that her past should dictate how everyone else is allowed to behave around her. Courtney expressing a different perspective on the situation is not inherently the same as telling a survivor how they are allowed to feel. There is a difference between invalidating someone’s feelings and disagreeing with how they use those feelings to navigate a conflict.

And I think this part is getting lost: trauma can explain someone’s reactions, without automatically justifying their behaviour.

Having experienced DV does not give anyone a free pass to make every disagreement about their trauma, shut down opposing perspectives, or expect everyone else to accommodate them regardless of the circumstances. When someone’s past is repeatedly invoked to make others feel guilty, silence criticism or secure a particular outcome, it can become emotionally manipulative. Their trauma may be completely real, but that doesn’t mean every argument they make is fair.

And respectfully, experiencing trauma does not automatically make someone empathetic, self-aware, accountable or even a particularly good person.

Survivors are human beings. Some are wonderful people; some behave terribly. Some develop incredible empathy, while others develop coping mechanisms that hurt the people around them. None of that makes their trauma less real, but neither does their trauma erase their responsibility for how they treat others.

I can care deeply about what you’ve experienced, believe you deserve compassion, and acknowledge that nobody should dictate your feelings about your own abuse, while still questioning whether Jolene’s behaviour in a particular situation was reasonable. Those positions are not contradictory.

We should absolutely have compassion for survivors. But compassion isn’t the same as unquestioning allegiance, and accountability isn’t the same as a lack of empathy. We can validate someone’s pain without validating every behaviour that comes from it. In fact, treating survivors as though they can never be challenged or held accountable is hardly empowering them; it treats them as exceptions to the very standards of mutual respect and accountability that apply to everyone else.

Emotional intelligence saves lives.

And no, folks, this didn’t come from ~sigh~ Chat. I’m an amateur novelist, with a neurodivergent urge to break things down to understand them fully.

Toxic, toxic behaviour by the producers of the show putting the contestants in that position.

Hi!

I'm watching from Europe, but the last two weeks, Southhemitv seems to be down... anyone else with that issue? I just can't reach the site, not even with a VPN. Is there anywhere else to watch?

WTF did I just watch?!

Seriously tonight’s episode was a new low.

Firstly production approve 3 additional people living at the sharehouse without having any kind of consultation with the other contestants.

Then they pressure Chantel into having to be the one who gets people’s family “kicked out”.

Then Scotty is a snide and nasty bastard and basically implies that Chantel is carrying on like a silly lying woman and encourages retaliation.

Then they film the contestants out at the most awkward dinner where everyone looks exhausted, pissed off and drunk.

WTF

The Block is essentially a workplace for the 10 contestants. Where is the duty of care?

There was plenty of poor behaviour from the contestants but I cbf even discussing because I feel like most of it would never happened if things were handled correctly by production.

It’s become crystal clear why Chantel and Wyatt want nothing to do with it. In my opinion The Block is lucky that Chantel seems to be a highly disciplined person who has a good handle on her emotions. This kind of treatment could really make someone with a different temperament absolutely break down. And all the angst for H1 and H3 being asked to evict family could have been easily avoided if production had done proper anonymous consultations before they all fucking moved in.

I know I’m ranting. Feel free to ignore me or rant back in the comments. That was the kind of garbage that needs to be purged.

Edit: I’m an hour behind in QLD and didn’t watch the show until later tonight. I see there’s already been a couple of posts similar to mine, sorry about that.

Share house drama

I’m struggling to understand why Jolene can say she felt uncomfortable around Wyatt, he apologised, and he has since kept his distance from her, yet when Chantel says she’s uncomfortable having THREE extra men staying in a small house with ONE bathroom, suddenly she’s the bad guy?

Honestly, I wouldn’t be happy either! It’s a shared living space with limited room and one bathroom, and suddenly three additional people are staying there without everyone being properly consulted first. Surely the common courtesy in a share house is to ASK the other people living there before inviting extra guests to stay? That’s just basic human decency.

What makes it even more frustrating is that Jolene and Adam essentially have their own private retreat, so their living situation is completely different. Chantel has to deal with the reality of sharing an already cramped space with even more people.

And Scotty - he is the HOST of the show. He should be remaining impartial, not making it seem like he needs to apologise to everyone because someone has expressed feeling uncomfortable.

More importantly, he has a duty of care towards the contestants. They should be able to raise concerns about their living environment without being made to feel like they’re creating a problem or giving him another chore to deal with. The way it’s being portrayed makes it seem like Chantel expressing her discomfort is an inconvenience, rather than something that deserves to be heard and addressed.

He doesn’t need to take sides, but he also shouldn’t be apologising for someone having feelings in the first place. There’s a difference between remaining neutral and making someone feel like they’re wrong for speaking up.

I also feel like production is deliberately changing the tone of this situation to create more drama. There’s a difference between feeling uncomfortable around someone who has since apologised and respected your space, and feeling uncomfortable because three extra people have been brought into your already cramped living environment without you being consulted.

Now it looks like Jolene and Adam are going to be spiteful and block access, which would be ridiculous if it’s simply in retaliation for Chantel expressing a perfectly reasonable concern.

Literally Jolene and Adam are disgusting.

PS: Adam trying to call Rick a dog and gutless when he is so polite? Adam is going off at the smaller guy cause he’s scared of the bigger one. In reality if Jolene honestly feels scared by Wyatt, he should be going off at the person who “intimidated” his wife?

And now for Jolene is contradicting herself about saying “don’t tell me how I should feel” when she’s been rude about Chantel and the others expressing how they feel?

This episode is ridiculous.

New reserve disclosure laws

I don't think this has been discussed yet? Victoria now has a new law around the disclosure of a house's reserve.

Real estate agents must publish the seller’s reserve price at least 7 days before an auction or fixed-date sale. (source)

I am fascinated to see how this impacts the auctions this year...

Episode discussion Last night's episode was gross

I know everyone has very different opinions on the contestants, but it just felt like across the board everyone was put in these crappy situations from production.

Everyone has a right to be annoyed with the extra guests in the house and production should have managed that much better. When it came to someone actually saying they need to go, Scotty goes around and tells them it's Chantel saying she feels uncomfortable. Love Scotty normally but that was not cool at all. A bunch of them had issue with the guests and Chantel should be able to say she feels uncomfortable without being pointed at as the problem. It's very aligned with a victim blaming way of conversing and framing an issue.

I know you all hate Jolene, but what Courtney said was effed. She completely gaslit and downplayed Jolene's experience. Watching the clip of her coming to her house at night with him standing there like a big tough man, surely it's not impossible for people to see how that would be intimidating? Surely it's easy to see how he played that game because he couldn't admit he was snooping?

Given where Australia is at with DV at the moment I am honestly shocked that they aired that segment with Courtney basically rolling her eyes at Jolene for saying she's uncomfortable with Wyatt.

We'll see how the apology goes but the whole season has been production creating drama and this episode felt really gross to watch, especially at the end. I don't want to see women being gaslit and laughed at for being honest about their experience with inappropriate male behaviour.

Episode discussion Production forcing an apology

So, from what we saw on the preview for tonight's episode, it looks like production is forcing Courtney to apologise to Jolene for saying she wasn't intimidated by Wyatt or feeling uncomfortable by him.

Does that mean Adam and Jolene are also going to apologise to Rick and Chantel? Or does that not follow the narrative ?

Episode discussion Chantel said she is uncomfortable? I am done.

I think Chantel and Rick were the only people who made sense in this whole scenario. Even Tyla backed out when asked during the meeting. The girls can honestly f off. They clearly are just jealous that these people have extra help on the site.. which honestly, do you research it has always been allowed.

I also feel C had a point where she said why should she have to go be a spokeswoman? Production can use some common sense and say that 13 people with 2 bathrooms is not going work.

But OMG I literally shut the TV when scotty went around saying Chantel said she is uncomfortable with Jimbo? She just said she didnt know him and in general no family should be allowed. It was NASTY of production.

I was so sad to see Jimbo go, because Roscoe immediately acknowledged the mistake and C never meant for it to be worded the way they did.

Also, now Jolene wants Wyatt to talk to her? I loved Wyatts response to her. And Jolene can honestly F off. There were 5 camera one and your housemate. Like thats some pretty serious allegations and absolute non sense

I am waiting for Lisa and Roscoe to put up a story apologizing. It was so uncomfortable to watch. I love drama like any other person but this was NASTY.
