Hello everyone,
Lately I've had to manually unspam a lot of totally legitimate posts. The Reddit spam system is not totally under the control of the moderators so I can't fathom why it's blocking allowed content or how to modify its sensitivity. If you posted a topic you think is fine, and it's not showing when you are logged off or in an incognito window, please message the moderators to inquire what may be the problem.
Sorry for any inconvenience,
—G.

This U.S. Model 1812/1813 Contract Cavalry Saber is a significant piece of American military history, manufactured by premier sword maker Nathan Starr of Middletown, Connecticut.
Featuring a heavy, curved single-edged blade and a distinct iron "reverse-P" stirrup hilt, this rugged design was produced to equip federal light dragoons and state mounted militias during the War of 1812.
This will be the oldest sword in my US military sword collection at over 200 years old. Bought from a local collector’s estate for $450.

Might be dumb question but i realised that i have Freewill and I have never done any sports, some gym here and there, I wanted to ask if ppl really do sword practise in real life as a means of becoming fit? like after a gym session or so
like solo just swinging sword in the morning ?
any advice would be grealty appreciated
Edit: After reading all the replies, it seems you people just do that, but it does not really make you fit proportionally. Imma try to get something myself too

I know this is likely a boring question, but I can't help but reflect on how characters in media have varying ways of holding their blades when running. Compare how Link positions his sword in the n64 versions of Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask, where he keeps it behind him (and keeping his shield in front), to how he does it in the 3DS versions of those same games, where he moves it back and forth (same goes for his shield. I prefer the older animation BTW).
I wonder how swordsmen throughout history as well as in current day hold their drawn weapons when running around. (As for my personal opinion, aesthetically, I prefer holding it behind the body as it looks more dynamic and appears ready for a cut). What's your insight?

I know, not the right community, but y’all are some of the most helpful and knowledgeable I’ve run into with this kind of thing!
Any ID help would be greatly appreciated.

A customer asked me to make a training sword taking inspiration from the witcher steel sword, I keep it simple, but functional.

I got them off of Facebook marketplace. Seller told me that they were from her husband’s grandmother and that he was “finally ready to part with them.”
Edit: forgot to mention that it was $100 for both so I doubt they are worth anything. I just think they are cool.

Hey! I designed this wall hook for my brother’s weapons and thought some of you might find it useful. I recommend giving it some finishing work so it doesn’t look like plastic xD
All my designs are free, and I don’t sell anything. If you like it, feel free to use it :)
Print it in ABS, of course, not PLA.
I also try to make my designs look as authentic as possible, with shapes a blacksmith could actually forge by hand.

And if you like forged-style stuff, feel free to check out the rest of my collection :)

I'm thinking of buying one and using it for cutting competitions, so I'm wondering if it's actually durable and will withstand much abuse at all? How to compare to a thick modern machete?

In this video, the practitioner performs old school traditional Miao Dao techniques. There is also a modern sport version of Miao Dao used by competitive wushu athletes.
Hey guys, anyone have recommendations for custom sword makers in the US that do highly aesthetic custom designs like the folks at Dragon's Breath Forge? I'm looking for options for a commission between $3k and $10k.
Stageswords by Jesse Belsky is another maker I've seen that looks good.
Not meant for recreation. Style or type of blade is undecided. I'm mostly interested in finding a good craftsman.
I saw that there was a post with custom sword makers, but the post is old and many of the links are dead/out of business.

I’m a history teacher, and I recently inherited this sword from a distant relative who recently passed away. I’m hoping someone here might be able to help me figure out what I inherited!
From what I’ve been told by family, my relative was involved with the U.S. military in the Middle East between the late 1950s through the 1970s. I believe they were with the Army Corps of Engineers, but I’m not 100% sure. Their work took them all over the Middle East, along with parts of Africa, Europe, and Asia.
Unfortunately, that’s about all I know. Nobody in my family seems to remember where or when they got this sword, or whether it was purchased, gifted, or picked up during their travels. As far as I know, it’s probably been sitting untouched for at least 30+ years.
Being a history teacher, I’m pretty curious about its background. I’d love to figure out where it might have come from, how old it is, and whether it’s an actual historical piece or something that was made more for decoration or tourists.
I’m also interested in eventually cleaning it up a bit, but I definitely don’t want to mess with anything until I know what I’m dealing with. The last thing I want to do is accidentally damage something that might have some historical value.
Does anyone recognize this style of sword or have any ideas about its possible origin or age? Even a general direction to start researching would be awesome.
Thanks in advance!
