Here to ask some more experienced divers or spearos what are some good and affordable dive watches/computers. I'm not looking for something fancy with a whole lotta features, I've only been diving for just under 5 months and thought it was time to finally get one. I was looking into the garmin descent g1 but am seeing tons of mixed reviews, I'd like to stay in the $300-400 range but if I need to bite the bullet and spend more than that I'm willing to
Im in a FB group ‘South FloridaSpearfishing’ and if the link works, is a post with a bunch of guns for sale. I dont know about spearguns nor the pax selling them but I do recall people asking about used guns here so here goes
I did a lot of spearfishing in Japan where there wasn’t much boat traffic so I never really used a float. My target species were small enough that I didn’t need a float.
Now I’m in Hawaii and everyone goes out with floats, probably because of the boat traffic. Is there a good guide on setting up floats?
I’m coming to the conclusion I can use a dive watch, like the actual ones with a second hand etc, for spearfishing. I always do 2 minute surface times. if your surface and dive times vary widely I can see the need for it I guess.
idk I guess I’m just coming to the realization we don’t need this tool. which is nice, because they are expensive and many of them are kinda junk. these seiko etc dive watches will last decades.
I figure just note the second hand when I come up. when it’s made 2 revolutions im ready for my next dive. I personally know when I’ve only been on surface for 1 minute (I physically don’t feel ready to dive yet) so I won’t make that mistake. but all my dives are fairly uniform right around 1 minute.
ymmv but seems it would be nice to have the funds for an extra gun or a colder water wetsuit instead of the 400 dollar dive watch. is anyone out there already using a “normal” dive watch.
I got tired of switching between three different weather apps and hitting paywalls just to figure out if it’s worth going for a dive. So, I decided to build my own web app specifically tailored for spearfishing and freediving. My goal is to keep it 100% free for the community.
It is currently in its beta phase, and I am looking for fellow spearos to test it out, try to break it, and give me brutally honest feedback. Since it is a web app, you do not need to download anything from an app store—it runs directly in your browser on both mobile and desktop.
What it currently features:
Spearo-Focused Forecasts: Wind, wave height, swell period, and sea temperature all in one clean interface.
Dive Score & Water Clarity: A custom algorithm estimating visibility and giving a diveability score based on recent swell history.
Save Locations and Share With Friends: You can save your favorite fishing spots and/or share them with your buddy by signing up. You can also upload photos and keep notes about the dive
Bilingual: Fully supports English and Greek.
Soon to be added. Interactive maps featuring bathymetry layers to read the seabed. GPS pinning. Hit a button while on the water to grab your exact GPS coordinates and save your spots privately++
Hi, I'm a developer and I'm currently planning to start developing a mobile app to improve breath retention. I see that there are similar applications, but they are all very inconvenient and weak in terms of use and design.
I need the advice of other pros, what should definitely be in such an application, perhaps you are already using something. What you like and what you don't like. Thanks for any feedback!
I currently have a Salvimar Hero 95 cm with a 6.5 mm shaft and a 17.5 mm band. and I’m thinking about moving to a wooden gun in the higher quality end to something like andrianblue. Is the upgrade to a wooden worth the money in your opinion ?The reason for upgrade is that i want something of better quality and heard that they have decreased recoil.
Hello! I’m looking for a dive buddy/someone to teach me the ropes on freediving and spearfishing. I live and Santa Barbara and need someone to dive with. I want to get into freediving and spear fishing but none of my friends want to get into it with me. Hit me up if you’re interested. Looking to dive anywhere from gaviota to Ventura.
I was thinking of buying the ultra mainly for daily use but also for spearfishing, however i heard many complaints about the diving apps(missing main features like surface intervals, water temp.etc) and that they also require a subscription. What is your opinion on the watch?
Hello! Im wanting to surprise my husband with a watch. He told me he was looking at one that measures depth, temperature, breath hold, etc. I've seen some recommendations for apple, suunto and garmin, but he's not really a smart watch wearer outside of spearfishing so I don't think he was looking at that level of watch. Are there any well known ones that aren't as expensive or technical that are still trusted?
i just need to vent, i’m actually hurting right now. I try to be the most respectful hunter i can but today when recovering my buoy i saw that the two fish i caught and killed slipped off the fish holder needle and i lost them . I feel bad knowing i basically took two lives for no reason. I hope and know that the sea will use their bodies for the better
It's been used a few times (2 or 3), comes with sling, band, magnetic cup, shooting line, slide ring, and travel shaft.
Shaft is 60" long, packs down to about 30". Made in USA. Heat treated 17-4 stainless. 7.5mm diameter, crimped slide ring stop, 3" flopper and tri cut tip. (Shaft has been used probably 12 times, it's straight and I'll sharpen it before shipping).
$125 + shipping ($15-25)
Also have new 8mm shafts available if you want that instead.
Been free diving for some time now and gone out with a friend's gun a few times. Im thinking this is something I really want to get into and am wanting to purchase my own gear.
Info:
I'm spearing in South Africa, mainly kelp forests and reefs with depths ranging from 5 meters to 15 meters. Mainly wanting to target Galjoen and Red Roman but will shoot a decent sized hottie or butterfish. Id also like to try some open water spearing for yellow tail.
I currently have pretty much all the free diving gear I need (Long fins, wetsuit/hood/socks, mask, snorkel, rubber belt w/weights+knife, dive watch (not a dive computer)).
Main question re: Speargun.
- Is my chosen speargun a good choice? Ive done some research and asked some friends and they seem to think that the Tuna with an open muzzle would serve me well, but I want to hear from the rest of the community as well.
- Is 90cm a good length for my use case? Ive used a 50 a few times and a friends 100 as well, I felt like the 100 was too cumbersome to maneuver in the kelp forests, but I don't want to go too short as Id like to use it in deeper/more open water.
- Im not too sure on whether to add the loading butt or not. From what I understand it's attached to the cassette and not something I can just add/take away. Is it something that might get in the way? Would it be beneficial when loading the 16mm rubber or not really?
The Longline clips and the flag are for a DIY float that I'm making from a body board. Will upgrade the floatline if/when I start going deeper.
Any other comments/advice, or gear recommendations would be much appreciated.
So keen to get into this!
