The Hive (12k), logistics + expansion tutorial

I wanna share my previous Asta Invicti (12k plebeians) Garthimi city (The Hive) and explain my method of city expansion. There's many ways to play, expand, and thrive in Songs of Syx, this is just my method that might be helpful for new players. I used this method here in this 12k city and as you can see from screens, I intentially made it a chaotic Hive, I used no copy-paste squares of services and housing. This is an example of how it's perfectly viable to play organic growth style up to highest population rank.

As a rule I design my logistics so I can use auto-employ for like 95% of warehouses. The idea is that you seperate warehouses into 3 types.

1) Food warehouse that only holds fast moving food items. Set to autoemploy and FETCH or PULL (depending if sources of food are near or in another specific warehouse).

2) production warehouse which is right next to a production building and stores produced goods (1-2 type of goods max); autoemploy and set to FETCH with very small range, just so it reaches the production building internal storage.

3) Janitorial warehouse - this one has only PRIORITY FETCH enabled and max range - which means it will pull from any warehouse that holds that item and isnt set to priority itself. Don't set any other warehouse to priority, so these ones always find items. Janitorial warehouse is supplying Janitors and Markets and it has all of their items, 1 crate each (80 items).

* I also use a military warehouse that is also set on PRIORITY FETCH, and holds all types of military equipment. I want it to all be in one place, that's why i use priority.

* you will notice I don't use input resource warehouses - like for example, coal warehouse for steel production. I try to always build production building near the source mine like coal so I can skip a logistic step. Later on in bigger city, when I have several production centers for same resource, I use UNLOADING STATION as a source of input material for production building.

---------

I build my city as If i'm connecting a network of satelite towns or settlements. Each of them has a basic needs covered and this is how you can endlessly expand, given you have enough resources to sustain the city.

Each settlement needs a food source (= food warehouse OR unloading station with food later on instead of warehouse) that is very near to Food Stall. The other basics are Market, Well, Hearth, Lavatory, Physician, Speaker + Janitor. The last piece is the Janitorial warehouse that supplies janitors and markets. That's it, a functioning settlement.

Stages, Hospitals, Fight pits, Bathhouses, Inns, etc.. are not needed in every settlement as plebs don't visit them that often. They can be sprinkled between settlements and more sparingly, especially Fight pits.

Each settlement is built near some source of resource, like a mine, farms, pastures, whatever. Make sure you understand how housing works: houses are a kind of service. Plebs won't die without them, as they don't die without Lavatories. Food > house. Plebs are centered around workplaces and will want job before having a house. They will also visit most of the services right after work, which means you want to keep WORK - SERVICE distance small, and houses can be further away. Ideally you want a ring where inside is services, next circle workplaces, the most outer one houses.

This also means your expansion blueprint doesn't have to be cluttered with housing. My expansion is centered around food and janitorial warehouse, basic services, and an important workplace that warrants a new settlement on the map. Houses come last and fill the gaps between settlements.

When I unlock Loading stations (which I try to do rather fast if possible), I replace all individual settlement food warehouses (except main ones that collect from farms, pastures..) with unloading stations that hold 2 crates of food (=800 food). I find it important to have 2 crates, as next food train starts going only after 1 crate is completely depleted, meaning you don't want 0 food on unloading station for half a day. You want 1 extra crate before second one starts comming over.

When my production of key maintenance materials like clay, wood, stone, furniture, cut stone, tools is big enough I use another unloading station for 1 crate of each of those goods in a lot of settlements - not every settlement, but lets say every second. This means janitors and workers will have nearby pools of key resources to constantly build and repair your city. Especially tools which are used by dozens each day for any important building that has tools tech unlocked.

If you have any questions feel free and have a good day, Syxers

Hello community!

New player here enjoying the demo. Also new player of the genre :-)
I'm a couple of hours into the tutorial and it's so much fun!

Thought it would be nice to share a relaxing moment: Winter just hit and everything is covered by snow.

Loving this game!

Quick question, why dont my crops die in winter? I thought crops usually died in winter, do crops in this game survive winter?

planted in summer and survived the winter

Keep em separated (slaves)

Back again, after getting expectations in check (extra food servings worked a charm!) I have moved on to making human slaves researchers for their bug overlords.

You can designate housing just for one species/slaves but unfortunately you can't do the same for buildings. However, you can do it by job. So I can turn off all jobs for human slaves except laboratory and ban all garthimi from the lab.

I've built them their own residential quarter with a guardhouse and basic services. My question is, what about janitors and food vendors? It looks like you can do some manipulation with the job slider on each room to try to force the humans to take those jobs but by default the garthimi will grab them first. Also, if I let humans be janitors and vendors then they will leave their area and walk around my capital.

I have a 50 bug guard force and have guard posts in high traffic areas, so I'm not really worried about them getting rebellious. It just seems odd that I can't truly isolate each species from the other (aside from the guards). It's more of a RP concern than anything. As far as I know, the bug lords won't be upset with slaves walking around their capital - slaves can't brawl citizens.

Since I'm on a river, I plan on putting a guard post/ overlord complex on the island in the middle and putting all the cretonians on the rich farmland on the other bank.

Amevian Physicians

Those cold blooded lovely reptiles
My physicians have a 1% access rating. They have the red flag of No Services, even if the workload is 100%. It is manned, I unlocked the tourniquettes, I have the material, but in the end they do not really work. The city is littered with the red area with the thumb down, and the city health is plummeting and I am now getting in a spiral of diseas outbreaks. I can see that in some micro moment at some point someone enters, gets vivited by the physician and then goes back to No services.
Amevians do not like to work in medical field, and don't like other species. Feel like I can't resolve this issue, and at 3.5k population, in a warm environment, can't grow more and the happiness/loyalty is tanking.

Any tip?

Mod Questions

Hey y'all! Was wondering a few things. First of all, do y'all actually use mods? I don't see that much talk about it on here, and after moving from RimWorld (from which I literally couldn't play without ~500 QOL mods), it seems they aren't that big of a deal with this game. I installed some mods on my save, but now I'm kinda questioning whether i actually should have cuz idk how reliable this game's community workshop mods are. If you do use them, what are your favorites? What are some you can't play without? Thanks! This game is genuinely so fun lol.

My modlist rn: Colurful World, Ambient Wildlife, Whispers of Syx, & Stop Melting.

(game has started crashing though, idk if its the fact that i have been trying to emancipate 1k slaves, but mf that's besides the point lol)

16k humans with 15 dondorians for tool and cut stone crafting. Getting the Herdsman of Entelodont title while being bombarded by plagues was not fun lol.

Expectations vs Fulfillment

New player here and loving this game. I just sort of dove in but having experience with games like DF and gnomoria I can tread water.

I have a Garthimi city and just crossed over the 600-650 threshold and I was aware this is when your citizens want more then you are providing. I've got meat/fruit/veg, clay and plenty of stone. I've been importing clothes in preparation for an army mobilization. I've built my housing into circular neighborhoods that I can copy (love that feature) with hearth, wells, lavatory, speakers, stalls and a shrine to the spider god.

Looks like I've got the basics down but my expectations are about 2.1 and fulfillment is 1.6 or so. Bottom line is 70-75% expectations met mean my happiness is starting to dip (I'm close to 90%).

I really wanted to start growing some more because my food economy could support another 200 with ease. I also wanted to bring in the human slaves so I could start researching. However, I'm not sure that's a great idea with rising expectations like this.

So what goods should I be adding (fish?) and are there any basic services I might be missing? I've read that upgrade well and hearth tech can help, along with researching a stage can help. Also been having more sick bugs, so maybe I should research physicians as well?

How do I use slaves?

So i learnt by watching YT videos about how to GET slaves into my colony.. i also beat up some raiders and got them as slaves, and then I wanted to build a mine far away. I did build it, but I don't want my humans mining it, I want my slave dwarf dondorians doing the mining. how do i get the slaves to do a select job? I'm on V71

Is having a multi-cultural city viable?

As a experiment i set all immigration to max from all races. It turned into chaos soon with constant fighting.

Is it impossible to do or is it just playing the game in hardmode, and it requires significantly more effort?

My first relatively successful city

I’m on a primarily cretonian build with some humans and dondorians to fill in crafting and research. My biggest struggle has been with health and runaway population being unsatisfied with their jobs. I used to have them separated better but the sprawl gets more sprawl it every time I need to increase my capabilities in some way.

Bakeries

New to the game, help me figure this out.

Do I need to manually remove workers from all my bakers all the time?

I find that I’ve got 50 bakers that plough through all the grain then do nothing for half the year

But if I put less bakers in so they work all year I don’t produce enough food to keep everyone happy.

I’m at 400 pop with 50 bakers and 60 grain farm workers

Are Events Random or Triggered?

Hello,

Are certain events, like raids or threats of raids, purely random, or based on time (certain year) or size (pop size)?

I'm wondering if I can slowpoke, keep the population small, and try to drastically improve the settlement before opening the floodgates.

Thank you!

Equipping weapons

I’m on my third city, got up to 2k pop then a disease took me down to around 1600, anyways I’m trying to defend against a raider with 115 soldiers and I have about 200 guys ready to go but my question is do I need to have an army supply depot even if I’m only attacking a raider right before he shows up? And how do I set it right I don’t get the 50-250 settings

Orchard Labor

How many farmers do you use for orchards in V71? I saw an old post that maintained X.67 farmers is the ideal since you save up on potential commute shenanigans messing with production, is that still what you see now? I play mostly Tilapi orchards so I am curious to see what you all do.

Dondorians monocity

Haven't played much for over a year.

is it just me or it looks like every major patch has been quitly needing dondorians in general sence , making them more and more of a overspecialized race? I have stated a new dondorian city yesterday and it seems that now it will be way harder to keep them growing as monorace. They used to get fulfillment from gem mine, onx pastures and some other basic stuff (a little bit of fullfillment , its not their main thing obviously), but now I see that they hate everything except a few refining and crafting jobs and military.

That's on top of expansive food preference without skills and enjoyment of getting it. And with trade being significantly nerfed from what we had a couple of years ago.

My first victory!!!!! Opium-exporting Cretonian colony, pushing 1k population. A raider tries to extort me, I refuse (got 400k in the treasury), they attack, I hire mercenaries—60 Cretonians for 300k aprox—crush their pathetic army of 5 raiders, and their leader dies. This game is so much fun!!!! I love it!
