Meta 🐣 Community Integrity Notice

Since 26 December, this subreddit has experienced abnormal spikes in activity from non-Somali users, alongside increased engagement involving blatant qabyaalad and the promotion of extreme ideologies. This behavior is disruptive and will not be tolerated. We ask all members to report any such posts or comments so moderation can act swiftly.

A clear reminder to all participants:

Criticism of politicians, governments, or historical decisions in Somalia does not grant permission to:

  • Insult, dehumanize, or collectively blame entire clans or communities
  • Glorify or excuse figures from the civil war by claiming they “did nothing wrong”
  • Advocate for, encourage, or justify harm against any group of people

Furthermore, this subreddit remains pro-Palestine and stands with the people of Sudan. Advocacy of genocide, ethnic cleansing, or mass violence, whether explicit or implied, is strictly forbidden and will result in immediate moderation action.

Debate and political discussion are welcome when conducted in good faith, with historical honesty and respect. Division, hate, and violent rhetoric are not.

History ⏳ 9 years ago today, the devastating October 14, 2017 Al-Shabaab truck bombing at the Soobe intersection claimed 587 innocent lives and left 316 injured, making it the deadliest terror attack in African history. May Allah have mercy on all those who died, and grant patience to their families 🇸🇴

Nine years ago today, our country suffered its darkest day when a massive truck bomb packed with two tonnes of explosives ripped through the crowded Soobe intersection in Mogadishu. The blast struck a busy traffic jam right next to a loaded fuel tanker, amplifying the explosion into a catastrophic fireball. The blast tore through innocent civilians, instantly collapsing the Safari Hotel and flattening busy markets, restaurants, and office buildings. It was a calculated act of pure terror designed by Al-Shabaab to inflict the absolute maximum amount of human suffering on ordinary Somali citizens going about their daily lives.

The scene quickly turned into an unimaginable nightmare of grief and devastation. Hundreds of people were instantly trapped beneath mountains of heavy concrete rubble, while the immense heat of the blast burned over 160 victims completely beyond recognition. Families rushed frantically from hospital to hospital, desperate to find any sign of their children, parents, or siblings. In accordance with Islamic tradition, many grieving relatives had to bury their loved ones immediately before they could even be formally identified or counted. The sheer scale of the pain left a permanent scar on the heart of Mogadishu, turning a bustling crossroads into a site of national mourning.

This attack remains the deadliest terror event in African history, leaving 587 innocent people dead and shattering the lives of 316 others who suffered severe injuries. The immense cruelty of Al-Shabaab stole breadwinners, students, and entire families from our community in a single afternoon. As we look back on this somber anniversary, we remember the agonizing loss felt across our nation and the unmatched resilience of the Somali people who stood together in the face of absolute evil. May Allah have mercy on all those who died, and grant patience and comfort to their families. 🇸🇴

Politics 📺 Mohamed Haji Ingiriis is behind the lies about Ilhan Omar's late father.

Thumbnail

“He was a full colonel in Siad Barre’s military regime,” historian and Oxford University doctoral researcher Mohamed Haji Ingiriis told The Post. “Ilhan’s father was never an educator.

He added, “Nur Said was a military officer who was loyal to the regime until the end. He was part and parcel of those who caused and created the mayhem they ‘fled’ to live comfortably in the United States.”

Imagine lying and spreading misinformation like this. What is it with these somali academics just lying or fanning the flames of xenophobia against the Somali community. First it was Ahmed Samatar and now this idiot.

Humor🧀 Walking too fast

I have been told on several occasions by almost every potential that I have spoken to, my mom and my female cousins that I walk too fast. Like every time I walk with a Somali woman, I was always being told to walk slow but I see a lot of other women on the streets that walk at the same pace as I am.

So sisters, no offence but have you noticed you guys walk slower than everyone else?

Ask❓ My mum is taking me with her to the miyi and i’m so excited 🥺🤍 As a Say Wallahi, what should I consider?

I’m gonna visit my ancestral homeland soon and I can’t wait! We are going to the Haud in Somali Galbeed, specifically Gunagado, which is where our family is from.

What should I consider to prepare myself properly?

Ik this sounds silly but is it ceeb and inconsiderate to bring my makeup? Skincare? Should I braid my hair beforehand? I normally have my hair in long boho braids and obv i’ll wear hijab when i’m there but im sure women will see my hair sometimes, so what should I consider?

Thank youuu

Discussion 💬 Trump is a sociopath

This is him reposting a clip of a man with mental illness who was recently killed by a tiger. Not even a week has passed, meaning the loss is still raw for his family. Imagine going on social media and seeing the President of the United States posting your child’s, brother’s, uncle’s or friend’s death for social media content.

And that’s not the only disturbing thing he’s done recently. He has also allowed a death sentence to be livestreamed. The guy is a lunatic, and he tends to act this way when he’s desperate, with the midterm elections coming up.

This is why Somali Americans shouldn’t pay any attention to what this man says. Instead, this election, Somali Americans should come out and support their local democrat candidates.

Discussion 💬 DNA test results shocked me!!

I took a DNA test and this whole time i thought i'd get 99-100% Somali like Sharky 😔 but i got 60% Somali and 30% Ethiopian/Eri, Is this normal for Somalis? And my families not even from Ogaden, maybe if we were it'd make sense because the system counts Ogaden as Ethiopia. I recommend every Somali to take this test at least once because you never know what your results will look like! I don't know if it matters but my family is Leelkase, so do with that information what you will but I’m starting to feel like an imposter LMAOO

For the past few years ALMOST HALF of the buildings of the old town of mogadishu have been destroyed for ugly real estate buildings.

This is a 1000 years old district with an amazing history. We have to start a movement in social media before everything is gone.

This is something that have been bothering me for a long time and it has been driving me crazy.

Just look at the images!!!!!!!

Discussion 💬 Has anyone else stoped to wonder…

I’m posting this on both the Somali and Somaliland subreddits because I think it’s something I want everyone to take a moment to consider…

Has anyone else noticed increasing posts of hostility, insults, and inflammatory rhetoric between Somalis and Somalilanders on both subreddits?

I’ve been following both subreddits pretty frequently over the past few months, and I’ve noticed an increasing number of rage-bait posts on both sides. These posts get folks riled up and pushing people further to extreme ends

I guess I’ve been starting to wonder… How much of these inflammatory posts are organic, and how much of it might be manufactured ?

I’m not suggesting that genuine political disagreements and historical grievances don’t exist. Of course they do.

But something in my gut tells me that there has to be some foul play… that is, some of this rage-bake content may be coming from outside our own communities (i.e., non-Somali sources), whether through bots, coordinated accounts, or foreign actors.

This wouldn’t be unheard of. Countries like the US, Russia, Israel, and Gulf states have done these sort of things before to other nations. And trust me folks, most populations don’t know they are victims of the foreign propaganda machine until it’s too late.

Given our geopolitics, our disunity benefits so many different actors, from foreign governments and regional political interests to, heck, even Somalia’s Federal Government. A divided population is easier to manipulate.

Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone else has had similar thoughts or suspicions? Or am I just being overly paranoid?

Whatever future Allah has planned for Somalia and Somaliland, I just hope that for once, we get to decide it for ourselves, instead of outsiders deciding for us

Deen 🤲 Four Months Until Ramadan: Don’t Wait to Start With the Quran

Today is 1 Jumada al-Awwal, and there are only about four months left until Ramadan.

Here is my advice starting today: set yourself a daily portion of Quran. Not to make Ramadan easier, no, that's not the point.

The point is to find what you've been looking for in the Quran, for your heart to find peace, your soul to settle, and for you to feel at home with the words of Allah.

Think about the dua of the Prophet SAW: اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلِ الْقُرْآنَ رَبِيعَ قَلْبِي، وَنُورَ صَدْرِي، وَجَلَاءَ حُزْنِي، وَذَهَابَ هَمِّي. O Allah, make the Quran the spring of my heart, the light of my chest, the removal of my grief and the departure of my worry.

Imagine what spring looks like, flowers opening and life blooming everywhere. That is what the Prophet SAW wanted the Quran to be for our hearts, a spring that brings them back to life, refreshes our souls and washes away our worries.

And that's before the reward of reading itself, the huge number of good deeds, and the fact that you're drawing closer to Allah through an act of worship that earns His love.

So don't wait for Ramadan to start your journey with the Quran. Start now, and make it the spring of your heart for every day of your life.

Discussion 💬 Do you like your Tesla?

Why are so many Somalis driving brand new Teslas? I’m honestly baffled by how oblivious some of our people seem to be to what’s happening around them. It doesn’t take a genius to recognize the absurdity of voluntarily enriching hateful oligarchs who champion rhetoric hostile to your own community.

Elon Musk isn’t just a guy selling electric cars. He owns twitter where he amplifies hateful rhetoric targeting immigrants and racial minorities. If you care about how your people are treated you can’t pretend the politics surrounding the product are irrelevant. Buying a Tesla or paying for Starlink internet puts money into his business ecosystem. And did you see the Israeli prime minister and ambassador taunting Iranian delegation at the UN with a Starlink device? Make of that what you will.

You might be a drop in the bucket but if just 400 people are paying between $500 and $1,500 a month on their Teslas that’s $200,000–$600,000 a month in car payments alone.

There are plenty of other electric vehicles and internet options. Nobody is telling you what to buy it’s your money after all. But if you care about your community as much as you care about other people’s causes continuing to financially support people who literally despise you for who you are e seems short sighted to me.

Politics 📺 We need to be worried about Ethiopian Civil War

Some people on TikTok have been mocking Ethiopians and hoping for a state collapse out of feelings of revenge for Mengistu and TPLF supporting our rebels in the civil war. I can’t understate how incredibly stupid this is.

I support the alliance with Sudan, Egypt and Eritrea because Ethiopia has an imperialist attitude and always has done. But I would rather a stable Ethiopia which can be responded to through legal and diplomatic channels, than several rogue militant states that can disrupt our fragile peace. The Somali region in Ethiopia, has become stable and peaceful. They support the current regime, and the current regime has given them employment and education opportunities that weren’t possible in previous governments. If the state collapses, we can’t just swoop in and make them federal states without getting sanctions. We need a stable Ethiopia to keep them safe.

Edit to add: This war is also going to cause catastrophic human suffering for millions of ordinary Ethiopians. I do not wish for harm for any nation, I would rather Ethiopians live in peace as our neighbours, and that there is an end to the suffering and bloodshed.
