Hi everyone!
I'm in Norway and looking to start making my own cigarettes using filter tubes and an injection machine. I've been researching this quite a bit, but there's one major problem: we don't seem to have access to the expanded/volume tobacco that so many American MYO users recommend.
What we have instead is traditional European-style rolling tobacco, often quite stringy, sometimes fairly moist, and sold in small pouches.
Some examples of tobacco available here:
- Petterøes Original 3 and 4 (44g)
- Petterøes Light Blue 3 and White 3 (44g)
- Eventyr Original 3 (50g, medium cut)
- Gullsnitt 3 and Blå Strek 3 (50g)
- Tiedemanns Red and Yellow Mixture (44g)
These are ordinary rolling tobaccos, not expanded volume tobacco.
What I'm trying to achieve:
I'd like to make cigarettes that are as close as possible in quality to factory-made Marlboro Gold or Prince White: consistent filling, smooth draw, reasonable strength and flavour, and an even, preferably fairly slow burn.
I consider Winner Tip tubes which are standard filtered cigarette tubes sold here in Norway. Quote expensive though.
I would ideally like to make around 400 cigarettes (20 packs) in a session, while saving both money and time.
Machines I'm considering:
I've been looking at the manual Scotte crank injector, Hawk-Matic HK6 and Powermatic V+. Scotte seems particularly interesting because people say it handles different tobacco cuts without much preparation.
However, I would prefer an automatic machine if it can reliably handle our tobacco.
Which machine would you recommend specifically for traditional European rolling tobacco? Is Scotte actually a better choice than an automatic el injector when using long, fine-cut/shag tobacco?
How do you prepare this type of tobacco for injecting? I've seen people suggest fluffing and airing it out, cutting it with scissors, using a food chopper with short pulses, or sieving out the dust. What works best in practice without ruining the tobacco?
How do you get the best cigarette quality? I'm especially interested in the right amount of tobacco per standard king-size tube, avoiding overly tight cigarettes, empty spaces near the filter, torn tubes and uneven burning.
Does anyone here regularly use European rolling tobacco such as Drum, Golden Virginia, Pueblo or similar in a tube injector? I'd love to hear your exact setup and preparation method.
If you were starting from scratch with only regular rolling tobacco available, which tobacco cut, machine and preparation method would you choose?
I'm willing to invest in a good machine, but I'd rather not spend hundreds on something that only works properly with volume tobacco I can't buy.
I'm looking for the simplest, fastest and most reliable way to get consistently good cigarettes from what we can actually purchase here.
Any practical experience would be greatly appreciated. Thanks from Norway!
