The hearing turned from tense to combative during the questioning by Senator Eric Schmitt, a Missouri Republican. In a remarkable exchange, Mr. Smith appeared baffled by the senator’s questions about whether he had attended an Atlanta Hawks game in February 2024. Senator Schmitt suggested Mr. Smith was in Atlanta to meet with Fani Willis, the district attorney who prosecuted Mr. Trump there.

A confused Mr. Smith said he had not seen a basketball game in Atlanta, causing Mr. Schmitt to triumphantly declare, “I think you’ve already perjured yourself.” He closed by calling Mr. Smith a “dirtbag.”

Mr. Schmitt’s heated accusation appeared to unravel almost immediately under further questioning by Senator Amy Klobuchar, a Minnesota Democrat.

Mr. Smith said he had gone to see the Iowa Hawkeyes women’s basketball team play against the University of Maryland. Ms. Klobuchar suggested that Mr. Schmitt’s accusation was rooted in the senator’s confusion between the “Hawks” and the “Hawkeyes,” and later confirmed the game happened on the date Mr. Schmitt claimed Mr. Smith had been in Georgia.

Our country is run by total fucking idiots dude it's unbelievable

The actual video of the interaction is fucking hilarious. Schmitt goes from being smug as hell like he got Smith on some insane gotcha and then immediately starts to get incredibly defensive and offended that Klobuchar even dared say something to him. Then later on in statements Klobuchar goes on to essentially scold Schmitt and his team and tells him like a school teacher to their student misbehaving that they need to apologize.

My favorite part was her going “I’m from Minnesota, we have the University of Minnesota Gophers, so thankfully there aren’t any pro teams to confuse them with”

Haha. It's brilliant. 😂

"Mr. Smith. Were you colluding with Klobuchar at a Minnesota Gophers basketball game? We have proof."

"I was watching the Michigan Golf team that day, sir."

I'm sure Schmitt could find a way to fuck it up.

Golden gophers, Golden State warriors

The sign made the whole thing funnier!

Yea imagine printing out this giant poster as some sort of smoking gun, and being hilariously wrong. So funny

the funniest bit was that they put it up so they could show they had "something" but then they immediately put it down and tried to hide it. like who does that fool? Its something a child would pull.

It sucks but it doesn't matter because the algo's already got their soundbite. This guy being embarrassed is just for show because no one who needs to see it, will.

u/Bored2001 15d ago

Bet he's going to use the sound bite anyway and just lie about it.

Yes he’s already done an appearance on the (zombie?) Charlie Kirk Show where the host praised him for “catching Smith going to the Hawks game” as if that mistake wasn’t blown up live on TV

Like, they couldn't even change their script after it was revealed that they were wrong?

u/Real-Extension-1357 15d ago

No because they knew they were wrong. This is how propaganda works. Its all lies. Look at the election fraud claims. Giuliani was in states infront of judiciaries claiming that over half the states population was voting illegally. They know thats not possible. Its intentionally lying

u/picticon 15d ago

They get rewarded for lies and hypocrisy. They have no morals.

I thought he tried to back it up and say he knew it was wrong, couldn’t confuse the teams, and it was some sort of a wacky trick to trip up Smith (all obviously bullshit)

1

u/nipseyrussellyo 9d ago

they knew they were wrong BEFORE they pulled the move. hence the immediate disappearance of the poster.

u/setibeings 9d ago

Personally, I think they really thought he had been in Atlanta, but didn't actually think he had been on contact with anyone from fani willis' team. Maybe they hoped his look of confusion for having some random texts flashed in his face would be read as him being caught.

2

u/nipseyrussellyo 9d ago

i think they didnt think. The whole thing was very confusing because the charge of perjury made no sense and the whole accusation was you were in the same city (6th largest city in the US) as someone else - there was no "there" there to begin with. When it first was being aired i must have rewound the footage 5x as i had no idea how this was a smoking gun in any way.

My suspicion was that they thought there was something (anything? bueller? bueller?) when they cooked this vague nothing up but that as they got closer someone on the team pointed out it was bullshit all the way down but they refused to scrap it so these immature brats though they could get away with just flashing it

Can't wait for Smith to sue for defamation.

lol the zombie kirk show

u/Real-Extension-1357 15d ago

They were already firing off messages on Twitter as it was happening. On scheduled sends. Fully coordinated. Propaganda machine in full motion

This is like the Senatorial version of the Comet Pizza "basement". It allegedly went something like:

GOP Cop: "We demand to be let into your basement now, so we can arrest the baby eaters!"

Pizza clerk: "Uh, we don't have a basement."

GOP Cop: "Well you better start digging one because the newsletter about the basement already went out! Dig or I'll lock you up!"

🍺🍕 Cheers!

The stupidity is unfathomable.

3

u/writeyourwayout 15d ago

It's not stupidity. It's mendacity. They know exactly what they're doing. They'll use a clip that makes Schmitt look good to MAGA, and MAGA will eat it up because they don't care about the truth.

How did they get there? Smart people voting?
