The situation would have been that somone else was Special Counsel and r/politics would scapegoat Smith.

Not me. He dicked around with Aileen Cannon way too long, all the many excuses and rationalizations notwithstanding. She played him and strung him along for just as long as it took. No thanks.

I mean he was a prosecutor and she was a judge who has higher standing who impeded his motions and investigation. His hands were tied on what he could and couldn’t do after a judges orders.

His hands were not tied. He could have tried to move the case to a different judge. That would have entailed risk. He would have had to give his reasons and they wouldn't have been flattering to Cannon, but he decided to follow "norms" and here we are. It's the same thing with Merrick Garland and his own dicking around.
