News/Article AI was supposed to sell PCs. Instead, PC shipments just crashed 20% as AI eats the world’s RAM, and Windows 11’s Copilot agents aren’t convincing buyers

I think the idea was that people would be so excited about using AI that they would buy new, upgraded PCs to be able to use it.

But... the AI doesn't even run locally?

It does, but you need a bunch of ram that costs,

You absolutely can run smaller agents locally. A few systems are marketed this way, like AMD's Halo system and Nvidia's DGX Spark. Very compact desktop systems with large unified RAM pools (think 100gb+) and can run some pretty competent models like GPT120b local.

lol, those Spark and other GB10 based have doubled in cost in the last few months.

hang on till eoy when these new models saturate then do it when they realize they cant run a model and os and anything in 64gb on a laptop

Didn't they halve the memory on that NVIDIA thing too?

Thats why the first model doubled in price, the new version isnt really a new model, its a laptop board with 64gb instead of the 128.

No good ai runs locally. —person with tough technical challenges

depends on what you're doing and how much capacity you have. local inference is perfectly fine for computer vision, ocr, tts, upscaling, photo processing

I just said technically difficult challenges.

and i have no idea who you are or what you consider difficult

Normal users already buy phones for that
