Graduates and juniors were told to contribute to open source for years now in order to get hired so when you add AI to it you get a flood of PRs that are just garbage.

Ah fuck, makes sense. Gotta pad that resume, especially since the coding market is flooded with vibecoders.

There's a snake in our boot. I call it Sam Altman.

They were told that because contributing to an OS project teaches you a lot about how to program on a team. Unfortunately now the LLMs you can do it without really learning anything so it’s a pointless recommendation now.

It is a good recommendation as long as people act in good faith and actually try to contribute and participate. At some point (even before AI) there was a bunch of spam on OSS repos from beginners taking a CS class. Especially during the Hacktober event.

I've never contributed to Open Source projects while in college because I knew enough to know I don't know enough to make meaningful contributions that won't waste somebody's time. Luckily though the last year of undergrad at my college was all team based programming classes so we were forced to learn how to develop with a group of people.

September is absolute hell when all the new students submit random bullshit because their teachers tell them to

I mean, being honest it isn't all that much different from how the professional world is working right now. Shit, I'm willing to say there's more controls against ai-slop in open source projects than there is with corporations.

That's because open source projects have maintainers that actually care about them, whereas corporations just want to pump out something vaguely functional for the next quarter's growth.

That's the unfortunate reality. I always felt grateful that my career actually is my passion. From messing around with computers at home to working for some of the biggest companies out there building amazing things. Never in a million years (even 2 years ago) did I think I would question working in tech. This is the first year that hard realization hit me.

The golden age of engagement farming - someone scored a jackpot from showing off his giant stream of constant updates, so everyone started putting ingredients into the pot at the same pace whether they belonged there or not. It's not just part of the internet these days, it's the internet.

This was also a problem that caused some repos to effectively geo-fence who can contribute, since they want actual contributions, not someone's signature they need to leave to get a passing grade.
