From what we know from TheFlow and Jordy (the other guy that reported this HV exploit to Sony) is:

  • TheFlow asked Jordy to not publish his report to Sony before GTA VI comes out, as Flow supossedly wanted to have both GTA VI and Linux on one device as soon as possibile
  • Jordy initially agreed
  • Then Jordy changed his mind and reported the bug to Sony, as he learned that some other guy found the same exploit usinh LLM too. He made a report to Sony without talking with TheFlow first.

If I had to guess Flow is really Sour cause Jordy agreed at first to keep it private, and then reported it asap when situation shifted without even contacting TheFlow

On the other Hand I understand Jordy too, as 10K $ is a whole lot of money, and the findings should get disclosed after a while anyway, so the "Only" big thing that we've lost is GTA VI dump for PS5 on launch day.

Still I would've like it better if the 3 guys who had Access to that HV talked it out frisrt

This isn't really a story about AI slop, this is about two dudes having a spat about an exploit. If Jordy had located the bug through traditional means, this would have played out exactly the same way.

Jordy did locate it through traditional means.

It was an unidentified third party who found it via LLM so Jordy scooped them to get the bounty.

It's more of a gentleman's agreement and mutual respect thing. There's been bugs that Flow and other Vita hackers have found at the same time, and they agreed to wait before disclosure and upheld it.

These newer guys don't play by those same rules, so it's just a difference in generations I guess.

Nothing saying the other guy who found the same exploit via LLMs couldn't have done what he did, it's just a lack of respect around the area.

Similar to how some companies have a handshake agreement for decades then a new person comes in and ruins it.

See siracha, b&t swiss and usa, b&t and surefire, etc there's multiple cases of this across industries.

That's like saying bombing Hiroshima and Nagasaki is not about nukes because 100K people died in Tokyo using incendiary bombs.

I... It kinda isn't about nukes? Like, your analogy doesn't make sense, because your strawman saying is actually true. Unnecessary civilian deaths should be the noteworthy thing, nukes are an ancillary part of that.

nukes are an ancillary part of that.

Really? Did the soviets start a mad dash to develop incendiary bombs and bomber jets? Or did Stalin make it a vital priority to develop nukes?

Why didnt Japan surrender after 100K people die in the Tokyo firebombings?

Did Oppenheimer say: whats the problem? tons of people died in Tokyo also!

Just a side note, the dump isn't the only thing lost. Usage of GTA 6 will depend on receiving the latest available update. That update will now include a patch for the vuln. Since so many PS5 owners will be getting GTA 6, all of the work that went into this will be used and appreciated significantly less. There aren't many people who will buy GTA 6 and then decide not to play it because they'd rather have Linux. So now the project will likely be completely scrapped until someone else finds a suitable point of entry for this to be possible. As the number of suitable devices decreases, interest from truly-talented developers does as well. This is a trend seen in both console development and Android development. Unless you REALLY want it for yourself, it becomes harder to convince yourself to invest the time and effort as the number of potential users decreases. The fewer potential users also results in fewer testers and less feedback, and therefore, a slowdown in development overall and perhaps a decrease in overall QoL as a result.

You know what, I completely get it from both sides. I get why Fl0w is pissed, I get why Jordy did it, I'm not happy about the situation but it's better than some idiot with an LLM getting $10K and fucking over the project

but it's better than some idiot with an LLM getting $10K

Did the guy that reported to Sony find the bug with the help of an LLM or not?

Jordy? Afaik no, I thought it was some third guy with an LLM, but I could be easily wrong

As per the message above by mumin26, jordy used an llm to find the exploit, and after another person was also able to find it using an llm, Jordy submited it first

1

u/mumin26 28d ago

Yeah he did, and he's not shy about it

3

u/Low_discrepancy 28d ago

So he's an idiot with an LLM that got 10K, is he not?

Even with LLMs, to find a bug like this you have to have knowledge
