Holy shit, 2026 ladies and gentlemen.

1Gbs is too fast? Better not tell them about other countries on 10Gbs then...

I'm sorry for you USA.

I live in a town of 3000 people and get 1.5Gbs, up and down.

We have a gas station, and a general store.

I was gonna say, I'm in a shit-ass coastal town in north Scotland and get 1gb FTTP.

The village of 80 people where I grew up in northern Sweden has 1 Gb/s. They've had it for like 20 years at this point.

As long as there's fiber, you can pretty much always get at least 1 Gb/s because the media easily handles it. The limitation is just the networking equipment and ISP peering speeds but there's no reason for that to be slower.

Except for the amount of tech debt accrued over the time they should have spent upgrading to meet future demand.

12

u/b0w3n Linux Aug 20 '26

At this point in time gigabit is over 20 years old technology wise.

10gbps is basically prosumer now, absolutely no reason even rural nowheresville US can't hit those numbers.

8

u/December_Flame Aug 20 '26

In fairness, like 1/3rd of our states are bigger than your country and we got 50 of'em.

I'm not excusing the shit state of our public infrastructure and laws around them but I do think the comparison is silly.

Frankly this argument doesn't really hold water. Rural northern Scandinavia has ubiquitous FTTD delivery and a population density similar to Alaska or Wyoming. This is a regulatory and political problem, not a feasibility problem.

What does the size of the country matter?

1

u/Beneficial-Act7603 Aug 21 '26

Do you think fiber optic cables are free?

You still gotta run those

1

u/SnooSquirrels2569 3600, 1080ti, 16gb 3600mhz. Aug 21 '26 edited Aug 21 '26

Indeed. However its the trenching that costs to most. In high density population areas there is no excuse to not have a Fibre network. However in rural areas they usually do have to be subsidized by the urban networks income

I used to work for a lines company.

Pop density is the primary factor. Not size of country.

Edit: not have

It's still patchy but it's getting there, we are still on 200Mbps but there's an option to upgrade it faster through council programs.

Yeah I live in probably the poorest and lowest pop state in the US, and even when I lived in the middle of nowhere in the mountains I could get up to 7Gbps down/up fiber.

7

u/kickthatpoo Aug 20 '26

I live in the boonies in the midwest. I top out at 500Mbs when I'm lucky. I pay for 600. Only one provider that serves my area.

4

u/Warslvt Warslvt Aug 20 '26

Maaan. I'm not "boonies", I live just outside city limits of one of the bigger cities in Arkansas and unless I use a local provider, best I can is 100/20 on AT&T. I think they actually slashed it to 50 mb recently. I knew we were behind but fuck me

5

u/Goonalips Aug 20 '26

Not anymore. They're downgrading you to ADSL2+ speeds. Welcome to TrumpBand.

3

u/No-Independence-5229 Aug 20 '26

Nothing is being downgraded, just fewer areas will be upgraded to fiber or DOCSIS 4.0

1

u/Goonalips Aug 20 '26

Yeah bro, that's a downgrade. Previously, it had to meet certain speeds for the FCC to determine whether the goals were being met. But now they're lowering those goals so that sattelite and fixed wireless which have slower speeds can now be considered to have met those goals. So the people in those areas that would have gotten gigabit speeds, can now be connected with satellite or fixed wireless, and the FCC will label that good enough.

Previous gigabit areas won't get downgraded. But rural areas will suffer.

1

u/No-Independence-5229 Aug 20 '26

Lower standard doesn’t mean it won’t happen. You think fiber companies that are rapidly expanding such as frontier/verizon fiber are just going to cap their fiber rollout to these standards? No, they are going to remain the same nationwide. This is going to effect a very small amount of greedy local only ISPs just coming to market

Meanwhile I live in a dense residential suburb next to a golf course and between 3 major shopping centers.

I get 50mbps down, at best. And 1/8th that up. And I cant get any faster unless I want to shell out $4 or 6k for a private fiber line to a rental property that isnt mine.

1

u/compound-interest Aug 20 '26

Similar story here. I live in the boondocks and I get 2.5gb/s symmetrical consistently. I use upload speed most and I get door to door spectrum salesman all the time who can’t comprehend why I’d need more than 10mb/s upload. FileZilla? Never heard of it apparently lmao

Here on Brazil i was getting 1Gbs for around 22 usd, but due the gangs rising they cut all the cables and no one wants to install here... That on a city over 2 million people.

1

The gangs.

It's a recurrent problem on Brazil that the international media is hiding due it accelerating in Lula's government, i lost my internet in May, my father who lives close, but more inside of the favela in September last year. That was a problem mostly located on Rio de Janeiro's Favelas, but since 2024 it spread like wildfire towards north of Brazil.

I live in a PUD area so I get 70 dollar fiber. It could be like that if we had PUD across the country.

5

u/decmcc Aug 20 '26

lol, when I lived in Ireland I paid €27/month for 400mb down and 100mb up, that was 15 years ago.

while some areas will have a decent roll out (maybe someone on your local gov was a former network engineer and saw opportunity), others will be underserved so 5G or satellite can compete.

You would never even consider starlink if you had $30 fiber (even shared fiber), but when the choice is between no Internet or starlink, the price seems a lot better.

then in 5 years when most people stop laying fiber the price goes up. You remember when Uber and grubhub were affordable? that's where starlink is now.

u/All_Thread 9800X3D | 5080 | X870E-E | 48GB DDR5 Aug 20 '26

Internet is a decentralized network of computer. As opposite to classical network there is no central nodes, and if one router is down, the information will pass by another route. This is an American invention from the 60's or 70's which was thought as a way to keep the IT infrastructure running in case of nuclear war.

In the late70's France developed a centralized data-network using terminal, and provided these terminal to many citizen, it's the minitel which was basically used a a digital-version of the phone-book, to buy train tickets online or to see pixelated ladies[1]. However, it was a centralized network and not connected to other network which isn't internet at all, but may-be the first consumer-grade data network

In the Early 90's a british CERN engineer , developed a prototype system to exchange easily information over the internet by using hypertext links. Despite his boss saying it's vague but interesting he kept going and created the world-wide-web. The WWW that most of us browse when using internet (Even though internet also support tons of protocols like ftp or usenet) it's the invention that would made internet usable by the general public ...

Tbh France and even Norway did more. Leave it to a Brit to take all of the credit for Europe’s success. Most of the r&d is US based.

Also, England is on the same path as the US. The only time Brits won’t admit that is when they’re being compared to the US. But the rot is the same. Second, you need to brush up on your history. Republicans. This is a purely partisan issue. Republicans on nearly every issue govern as if they are an enemy of the American people. It's not just this, they're also the pro-pollution party, pro-unnecessary war party, anti-worker, anti-infrastructure, anti-journalism, etc.

Every American and every foreigner should hate and actively work to destroy the entirety of the Republican party and its power structure. If you're Ukrainian or an Iranian school girl, you might end up dead due to Republicans.

I have never heard of anyone in even any decent sized town not having access to gigabit. The federal government wasted a ton of money during the Biden administration (hundreds of millions) to run fiber across the country just for ISPs to not even pick them up due to such few customers being on those lines.

It’s why I don’t blame the FCC on this one, can’t rely entirely on fiber

1

u/CumAssault 7900X | 7900XTX Aug 20 '26

Yeah if you can get 1gig it’s great. But for a lot of us rural folks going from shit satellite to Starlink was a huge jump. Where I am its either Starlink or Hughes net. The government paid to run fiber, no ISPs ever picked it up. We wasted so much money on it

2

u/LittlestWarrior 5090 | 9950X3D | 64gb 6000mHz Aug 20 '26

Wow. We had to just about beg our ISP to run lines on our road. No clue why they finally did, seeing how expensive that undertaking was. Surely me and my neighbors aren't giving them enough profit to recuperate from that any time soon.

1

u/To-To_Man Aug 20 '26

We did it with USPS, which the government also wants to get rid of. If they have electricity or water, they can have internet. Rather than government built redundancy that ensures greater connectivity and autonomy for those most remote and underserved, you rather have the people sell out for a company who may change their terms of service or pricing at any moment?

Anyway take a guess who might have a vested interest in making rural America's Internet speed slower. Here's a hint: you already mentioned them.

1

u/usual_suspect82 5800X3D-4080S-32GB DDR4 3600 C16 Aug 20 '26

What most in this thread don’t seem to understand is just that, land mass and concentration of population.

The US is 3.53 million square miles, that’s bigger than France, Spain, Sweden, Norway, Germany, Finland, Poland, Italy, and the UK combined. The sheer cost of deploying fiber across that amount of landmass is massive, not only that, the time it would take, maintenance costs, and being able to recoup those costs. Every European country is smaller, with a smaller and more concentrated population per square mile so it’s easier to supply faster internet across the board.

Another thing to consider is needs and usage since not everyone needs gigabit internet. I have a 2Gbps connection myself, I game on both my PC and Switch 2, while the rest of my family streams and use their phones. While 2Gbps is nice, it isn’t necessary. On my S2 I’m limited by Nintendo’s download servers, on my PC I’m limited by any number of download servers, so often times I can’t even flex out the full capabilities of 2Gbps, and even then it’s not impressive enough to warrant needing more. I’m not in that huge of a rush where I need top of the line break neck speeds, especially when the benefit to me is just saving a couple of minutes

While I’m all for 1Gbps connection speeds across the board, I also understand that the costs of having such a standard in the US, considering its size, is always going to be passed onto the consumer whether it be in the form of higher taxes or higher internet bills.

1

And almost all of them have access to gig speeds. This is about the rest. (Also, that definition includes pretty sparse suburbs and tiny towns as “urban” because it has no concept of something in between urban and rural.)

When I was walking around Liechtenstein they were advertising 10GBPs for like 50 francs or something silly. Admittedly much easier logisical challenge rolling that out nationwide there.

u/Property_6810 Aug 20 '26

I think the problem is requiring it in places where you're running lines 10 miles between people. Having variable requirements depending on population density makes sense. We do it with roads too.

1

u/Mr_ToDo Aug 20 '26

It does seem like there aren't many people here from rural areas

The primary tech for those places is point to multi point wireless, and satellite(with the sad option of cellar too, if you can even get reception)

Having it something like location or density dependant I think would be a good starting point

And it's not like they're entirely eliminating the minimum speed requirements for what constitutes "good enough" 100/20 isn't great, but it's a hell of a lot better then the 10/1 DSL that a lot of people still use

Course. That said, we actually have shockingly good rural fibre coverage. It's mainly X distance from their trunk runs, but it covers a pretty wide swath. The real shame is that the "small" wireless ISP option we had(with the best customer service I've seen from an ISP) sold to the worst ISP a person can find around here(Fucking xplore. Bought them up, shut down all the towers, and told people to switch to satellite or cellular, neither of which they do well)

I live in the USA and get 8gbps symmetrical.

1

u/VirtualMoneyLover Aug 20 '26

Location (and price) matters.

2

u/09044595134151602468 Aug 20 '26

$80 per month inc all taxes and fees. Lifetime price.

Big city in USA.

Sonic's been running around my county offering 10 gbps symmetrical for $50/month

Frontier does 5 and spectrum does 1

2

u/Waffleskater8 Aug 20 '26

All I can think of is ziply fiber in the northwest who offers a residential plan of 50gbps .

In Canada I've been told by Rogers salespeople, not once but twice, that my 1Gbit speed was "too fast" and I "don't need internet that fast." They've even told me that 500Mb is too fast.

Gotta love those starlink checks...

1

u/Beneficial-Act7603 Aug 20 '26

One guy even said in this thread "Yeah it's rough in the countryside, just use Starlink"

Bro...

I'm sorry for you USA.

You shouldn't be, 77+ million people voted for this shit show and almost as many people shoulder shrugged. Feel bad for those with enough folds in their frontal lobes and enough synapses firing across them to have been screaming the entire time how bad a Trump 2.0 admin would be.

This also isn't the first time Carr's put his thumb on the scale to help Elmo out and it won't be the last. The P2025 cumsock is also the same one leading the charge to kill the multi-billion dollar grants that were meant to build out fiber and such to rural communities (the same ones that evidently care far more if a trans person pisses in a bathroom than if they have a hospital within 45 miles or how to feed themselves/kids if they lose their food stamps).

Romania has commercial offers for 2.5 Gbps. Like I can go to a shop, pay $30 dollars first month and then $18 in local currency after to have fiber and router installed by them.

Europea. Living in Cambodia. I concur.

1

u/welestgw Aug 20 '26

Light speed too slow? Then we need to go to ludicrous speed!

Meanwhile, in Australia...

Trump's America. All is as predicted.

Capitalism. Worse than communism apparently

If you feel sorry for the US don't look at Australia. They're in a really rough spot for ISPs.

Or Finland, that has some availability with 40 Gig.

u/arroyobass PC Master Race Aug 20 '26

I have 10GB/s fiber at my house for about $130/month in the US. I can't tell you how lucky I feel!

1

u/Beneficial-Act7603 Aug 20 '26

At 130$/month? Really?

Guess you don't have much choice but it's no wonder most people don't use anything past 1Gb/s

1

u/NotTheAvg Aug 20 '26

I'm chilling in Korea where we had 10 gigabit internet for at least a decade or so now.

Edit: but to be fair, 100Mbps is still common here since it's stupid cheap and is pretty much useful for all situations. Few use cases for gigabit and even rarer cases for 10 gigabit.

1

u/Jarppi1893 Aug 20 '26

I'm too European for this, and I've been living in the US since 2009. This country is behind in almost everything, and it's mildly concerning

1

u/Hyper_Mazino 5090 SUPRIM SOC | 9800X3D Aug 20 '26

Here in Germany 1Gbs sound like a fairy tale.

1

u/Beneficial-Act7603 Aug 20 '26

Really? I thought you guys were at least at 5Gb/s pretty much everywhere...

Is it a cost thing or because of poor infrastructure?

1

u/Csquared6 Aug 20 '26

It's ok. In about 6 months the government will start bringing back horses because cars are too fast. Who knows what people will want in the future?

1

u/wolphak Aug 20 '26

Most of the country is already past gigabit it's not that huge of an issue.

1

u/razorbacks3129 4070 Ti Super | 7800X3D | 32GB Aug 21 '26

Why? I’m in US getting 5GBps for $90 a month and it’s paid for by my employer

1

u/XxDrummerChrisX Aug 20 '26

Excuse me? As an uncultured American please don’t tell me 10gb is a normal household internet speed in some places. Youd be paying hundreds a month here.

0

u/wytewydow Aug 20 '26

Do you have any idea how hard it is to reach those speeds when every spare inch of silicon is going into data centers?

-1

u/Aleksandrovitch Aug 20 '26

S’okay. We’re also told guns and coal are healthy, while paying 2k a month on health insurance.

It’s going to take a meteor strike to crack down through the bullshit we’ve buried ourselves in over here.
