Instrumentation Help

I'm in my second year of nuc med school and we just took a mock board exam and unfortunately I did not pass, but I struggled the most with instrumentation.I retake it in a few weeks and definitely need to review that material

Is there someone that might have a PDF copy of that old Instrumentation book? It's impossible to find online right now but I hear it has great material.

If there are any other resources that you recommend pls do tell! I read through the green book plenty but the way it's laid out for instrumentation & QC isn't helpful for my brain personally šŸ˜”

Nursing to dosimetrist

Thumbnail
2 Upvotes

I’m an RN with 8 years of nursing experience, and lately I’ve been seriously considering a career change. Maybe it’s a midlife crisis, or maybe I’m just ready for something different. šŸ˜‚
I’ve become really interested in medical dosimetry and am considering going back to school to pursue it.
At this point, I’m not particularly interested in becoming an NP, going into management, or teaching. I’m looking for a different career path where I can still use my healthcare background.
Has anyone here transitioned from nursing or another healthcare profession into medical dosimetry?
I’d love to hear about your experience, especially:
How difficult was the transition and schooling?
Was finding your first job challenging?
How is your work-life balance compared to your previous career?
Do you have any regrets about making the switch?
I’d appreciate any honest advice or insight, even if it’s something I might not want to hear!

Is it stupid to work part-time only?

hi everyone! I'm interested in being a nuc med tech, but the only schedules I see are Monday to Friday 9 to 5 or Monday to Thursday 4x10.

I sometimes get overwhelmed by life and I don't think I can always work every single day. the average hourly pay for nuc med tech seems high enough that someone working 3 days a week could still make $60k a year. do you know any nuc med techs that work part-time? would there be any major cons of only working part-time?

Need opinion on RAI dose and safety

I am currently going through a reoccurrence of thyroid cancer. I had 150 mci last Thursday. The Nuc med folks said I should not share the same bed with my wife for 1 week. Here is my dilemma… these instructions are so different from my initial treatment. My original treatment with a different facility and was just over 2 years ago, dose was 80 mci. Back then, they said 2 week in a separate bed, 3 weeks from being around pregnant women or babies.

I sick of being separated from my wife, but don’t want to bring any harm to her.

Radiation risk

Hi everyone! I’m considering MD Nuclear Medicine as a career, but I have some concerns about the long-term risks of occupational radiation exposure.

I’ve read about the potential risks of radiation and cancer, after working in this field for 20–30 years.

I would really appreciate insights from nuclear medicine consultants or residents who have been working in this specialty for several years.

  1. What is the actual occupational radiation exposure like for a nuclear medicine consultant?

  2. Is there any significant long-term risk of cancer or fertility problems if proper radiation safety protocols are followed?

  3. Do consultants generally have lower radiation exposure than technologists?

  4. Would you consider nuclear medicine a safe specialty for a long-term career?

I understand that radiation exposure can be minimised with proper precautions, but I’d love to hear about your real-world experiences and any evidence regarding long-term risks.

Thanks in advance to everyone who takes the time to share their experience!

How stressful is being an NMT?

Hello. I am currently completely burned out from my current job. I've become interested in becoming a NMT because I've seen posts saying it's a "boring" modality. But I also see some people saying they're constantly up and moving, and it can be stressful. I like to be busy, but not stressed out. How stressful is the job, really? What settings are more "laid-back"? Of course, no job in healthcare will be stress free, but I'm attracted to this job because it seems like scan times can be longer and there's more time to breathe in between patients. Is this true?

Pre Nuc Med program Jobs?

Hi everyone,

I’m a 4th year uni student in California studying Bio with a concentration in Physio and need advice on jobs that I can apply for to help fund my future Nuc Med program. Preferably ones that will keep me within the medical field.

For reference I used to be a CNA because at the time i thought was going to become a Nurse but i eventually realized Nursing wasn’t for me and pivoted to getting my bachelors in Biology.

I’ve now found interest in Diagnostic Imaging and Nuclear medicine and understand that i need to apply to a 2-4 year Nuc med program. But im 24 i’m feeling lots of pressure find a ā€œstableā€ career after graduating with this Bio degree. I basically need a job right off graduation to fund this Nuc Med dream. I’ve considered doing an online MA program spring semester so that I can hopefully be certified and can work before/during my Nuc Med program but that would also cost me another $3-4k.

What other jobs would you recommend applying for in the meantime? Are there any jobs that would still bring me close to the medical field without having to do more and more programs? I would love anyone’s advice or to hear how they got into this field. I’ve been feeling so behind and lost.

Thank you <3

Brain Imaging Specific Tech Jobs

There was quite literally no other rhetoric which I thought would work better. A lot of tech's have cardiac imaging jobs. Stress tests all day, all year. Is anyone aware of offices, clinics which do Amyvids all day? +/- to some degree of course.

Is National Polytechnic College (PNC College) a good school?

I'm considering in applying to nuclear medicine at NPC College lakewood CA. Someone who is enrolled or graduated from there, what are your opinions on of the school.

  1. Is this school accredited for nuclear medicine?

  2. What was the cost? Or estimate. Is this school worth it for how much it cost?

  3. What was the schedule like?

  4. How were your clinical sites like?

  5. Did you have trouble finding a job after graduating?

I have an interview with them soon and I just want to know everyone's experience with this school before i make my final decision. Also feel free to recommend any schools to look into (: I'm interested in rad tech as well.

Do you regret going into nuc med? Are you constantly stressed or busy nonstop at work? Do you wish you did something else?

Biggest cons about this job?

Would you recommend it to someone?

Say someone wants to leave a super stressful healthcare job but focuses a ton on hospitality and never gets breaks, would you recommend this job?
