What is this sub?
This sub is for redditors to ask for advice on mold or fungi issues in their home/apartment/workplace/etc If you see spammers or others that violate sub rules, report them, do not take things into your own hands. This sub is NOT for mold remediation, restoration or other contractors, testing firms, laboratories, product or equipment manufacturers or distributors or legal professionals.
Instead, this sub is specifically for individuals looking for general advice. Any offers to do work or make referrals will result in an immediate ban. Please be very wary of those looking for, or offering, business here. We do not endorse any companies, and proceeding with a contractor/consultant/lab you've met via this sub should be done at your own risk. This is not a place to advertise products and or services. It is also not a place to rant about your past problems with mold or companies or services you've dealt with.
Do not post a picture and simply ask any of the following (or similar) questions:
We can not determine the type of mold you have from a photo. That can only be achieved using professional sampling methods and laboratory analysis.
We can speculate on whether or not something is mold but we can't identify it.
If you used a home/DIY test kit there is very little information that we can provide you due to the limitations of the method.
You will need to hire a qualified microbial testing company if you want any reliable information.
This is not the place to advertise your services in any way. No links, no company names, no "informational guides" will be allowed. All offending posts or comments will be deleted and 1 warning will be issued. After that you'll be banned.
Overall, please be respectful - things must remain on-topic, helpful, and kind. Absolutely no abusive or hateful language will be tolerated. Even if someone else "started it" with disrespect does not give you permission to use derogatory language or call names.
Bans will be handed out when needed. Remember, no question is too stupid, too simple, or too basic (exception, see rule #1). We're all here to learn and help each other out - enjoy! The mods generally do not remove bad advice, we let upvotes and downvotes run the sub. That way, people can also see what not to do as well. Politics do NOT belong here.
TL/DR: At the very least be nice, take a few pictures, and include your location.
Again, this is not a place to solicit products and or services. Any posts smelling of self-promotion such as links to a website or service (including all blogs) will be removed. No exceptions. Offenders will be banned.
A few general submission rules.
Be respectful. No name calling or talking down to someone because of something that seems "basic" or "easy" to you. Stand by your knowledge, not childish responses.
If you don't know that your answer or advice is 100% true then indicate that you are speculating or simply refrain from commenting.
Don't throw out comments like:
Comments designed to scare original posters will be removed. This is a sub to provide reasonable solutions (when possible), not to unnecessarily alarm people. Yes, there are occasions when conditions require some immediate and drastic actions, but most indoor mold growth can be handled without full scale remediation.
Please don't just comment with just a link to a website or to another sub. We are especially careful about links to single websites (this includes blogs) without some summary or commentary. In some cases, we have no way of knowing if you are profiting privately from the site. Also, don't just tell folks to head to sub /r/gohereinstead - like specialized subs for narrow topics. The only exception here would be questions where some time has passed between posting and a lack of responses. We want the commentary, discussion, and knowledge to stay here in our sub on reddit, not just drive people away.
Responses that include a google search, lmgtfy.com, or telling someone to watch Youtube will be removed and the user will be reprimanded. Again, this is all about respect. Obviously, people aren't coming here to Google answers. Help them think about this problem, what they may need, things to watch out for, etc.
Sometimes discussion can get off-topic and we'll remove those comments. This includes political commentary. At times, this can includes jokes. It's a tricky area here, but we've seen instances where the joking side of reddit takes over a thread and the OP never gets their question answered. However, here's we're mostly talking about non-relevant commenting such as this:
Seriously? People live like this? What the fuck is causing mold growth like this? Don't you clean your house? This is not any way to live.
How to Upload Photos
Go to https://imgur.com/upload and drag/choose your photo, you don't even need to create an account. Here's an animated gif on how to drag and drop on PC. Click COPY, then use that copied url link and paste it right in the submission text box on reddit.
My link: https://imgur.com/a/n2lLo
To get fancy and have text rather than the url, place the word you want to use as the link in brackets followed by the url in parentheses.[text goes here](link goes here)
Pictures. Here's a gif of the typing I do, in case that is confusing.
Upload Photos On Mobile The Imgur app works fine, but via a website this is unsupported. There is a workaround: In Chrome, choose ""Desktop site" in the drop-down menu when you are on the upload page and it'll work fine. Then Copy the Link that's produced and paste it into your reddit post/comment.

Just to remind you that no, you aren't experiencing a disaster. Have a good one yall!

Already called someone out. I hadn't noticed anything since we installed these a couple months ago. Also didn't notice anything before my husband left for work about 2 weeks ago and only used the washer once! I'm so scared of this affecting my health and the cost of repair since they will most likely need to demo and replace most of this room. Anyone have any similar experiences??

Is this mold? Repairable water damage? What would the process be and how long would it take? Feel like property management is cutting corners, want to make sure it is safe to live in afterwards.

Title: Is this mold?
Location: US-TX
Iāve noticed what looks like growth on the HVAC vent panels in my apartment, along with a persistent musty odor. Iām not sure whether anything is growing inside the HVAC system or whatās causing the smell.
I reported the vent panels and odor to maintenance while I was pregnant. They said it was mildew and replaced the panels, but the musty smell continued. I recently submitted another request asking management to have the HVAC system checked for moisture or growth, including the filter area, supply and return vents, accessible ductwork, coil, condensate pan, and drain line.
A maintenance worker came by today, but he appeared to only look at the vent panel. The HVAC system itself wasnāt inspected. I told him I want an HVAC technician to come out and check it.
I havenāt tried to clean or remediate anything myself. I use an air purifier and dust regularly. My daughter is about a month old and has been having asthma symptoms. Iām not saying the apartment caused them, but Iām worried and want to find out whether thereās an issue. Iād also like to terminate my lease and would appreciate advice on what to document and what kind of inspection to request.
I understand a photo canāt confirm what this is or identify a mold species. Iām looking for advice about the situation and appropriate next steps.

should I be worried about it?

I moved into a new apartment roughly 2 months ago. I noticed the HVAC system in our maintenance closet leaking a few weeks ago (itās clearly been happening for a while because itās dripping right into the hole in the cement) and this is what the drywall looks like right next to where the water is dripping. I put in a maintenance request. Our maintenance guys came and asked me to point them to where I thought I saw mold. I did, and they told me itās not mold. One of the guys then explained why the HVAC system was leaking like itās completely normal, which itās not. He told me that itās ānot really moldā but that he would spray mold repellent anyways. Maybe Iām crazy, but Iām like 90% sure this is mold, and if it is, I doubt mold repellant is gonna do much. They then locked our maintenance closet, so I donāt have any way of monitoring the situation. I was hoping for some peopleās thoughts, ācause if this is mold, they legally have three days to fix the issue under my countyās health code.

My partner bought the house when she moved here. Lately every once in a while we would get a sewage like smell.
We would crack the window - thought maybe it was was the laundry washer so we ran a cleaner through it and it was seemed like it would go away.
Well eventually we decided to call someone out to come look at it and sure enough the confirmed mold.
The house had some water damage claims against in on the insurance - the company that came to look at it said they suspect they took the insurance money and tried to fix it themselves and didnāt do a great job.
The company wants to tear down the floor, and the some of bathroom behind it.
They had originally came out to take out the drywall on the this side and treat the wood when they found the drywall behind it with mold as well (guess I shouldnāt be surprised)
Just looking for opinions and seeing what we can do. We definitely were not ready for a very expensive home repair⦠but few rarely are š
Colorado- USA
My partner has owned the house for about 4 years so the damage was before then

r/Mold • u/Tranarchist___ • 5h ago
had this stain above the shower I use ever night for a couple months now, Iāve also been having hormonal issues recently. Being tested for all kinds of things but whole thing made me remember the stains and start considering if mold could be the culprit? At the very least itād be nice to scratch it off the list.
These are from the interiors of some drawers of a vintage sideboard. The stains donāt smell like mold, they arenāt fuzzy, and the wood isnāt rotten. Could it still be mold?

Hi. Iām a week out from water infiltration in my ceiling leading to big mold blooms. My terrible landlord insists on waiting for it to ādry outā before doing anything about it - ughhhh
So Iām curious if I should
- leave the windows open even though itās super humid out?
- close the windows at night?!
- have fans on in the rooms to dry the ceilings out - but might that not spread spores?
- close the windows and run dehumidifiers and/or the AC on ādryā? Imagining I shouldnāt bother running either machine with the windows openā¦. Right?!
What is the best way to help the drywall dry out in the sealed ceilings?!
And yes, Iām strongly considering moving but for now Iām just trying to get through without getting sick

I'm a homeowner in Gainesville, Florida, with a two-story, approximately 2,600 sq. ft. house built in 1985. I'm trying to figure out the appropriate scope of mold remediation, but I'm having trouble finding someone who will actually investigate the source and extent of the problem.
Background:
Photos and documentation:
Where I'm stuck:
My main concern with the $17,000 remediation proposal isnāt the priceāitās that the scope covers cleaning and removing visible mold, without identifying or correcting the underlying moisture problem. I want to address whatās allowing the growth so it doesnāt return after remediation.
I understand that mold is present and that the underlying moisture problems need to be corrected. What I don't understand is how to determine which areas actually require remediation.
I've contacted other mold assessors and received proposals around $1,000ā$2,000, emphasizing 6ā7 indoor air samples plus surface samples. I'm having trouble finding someone who will focus on moisture mapping, inspecting suspect materials and cavities, examining the ductwork, identifying contributing conditions, and developing a specific remediation protocol.
The CDC/NIOSH guidance I've read says visual inspections and identifying moisture problems are generally more useful than routine air sampling, and that routine mold testing isn't recommended:
https://www.cdc.gov/niosh/mold/testing-remediation/index.html
https://www.cdc.gov/mold-health/about/index.html
I'm not opposed to testing when it answers a specific question. I just don't understand what obtaining even more room-air samples would accomplish.
My questions:
I'm willing to pay for a proper assessment. I just want that money to go toward identifying and solving the actual problems rather than repeating air tests that may not change what needs to be done.
Any advice on how to approach this would be appreciated.

Hi I live in an ADU in a dry climate and the bathroom doesnāt have a ventilation system. I usually open a small window to let moisture out when taking a shower, but this mold keeps on coming back on the ceilings only. Thereās no second story. Any ideas?
r/Mold • u/Additional-Egg6268 • 11h ago
The first one is right at the top of my bathroom door and has slightly gotten bigger over the past two years. The others are on the shower door. I clean the shower but it still returns. Iāve been really worried and been putting off posting about this here out of fear because we donāt have enough money to move out or hire any professionals.
I live in Denmark if this is any helpful
