In case Steve's wondering...

If Cleveland and Milwaukee meet in the upcoming World Series, it would mark the 1st time in history that the Fall Classic had featured two cities where the Edmond Fitzgerald had once docked.

One week in November?

Maybe I’m out of the loop but did this series end? I thought I remembered them saying they were doing a year down south instead and it was going to be along the lines of One Week in January, but I don’t remember ever seeing that come out, and OWIN hasn’t been out for a while unless I’m missing something.

I really enjoyed it and would love for it to come back.

40 mins of ads?

Anyone else run into 40 mins of ads on episode 3 of the fishing tournament? I was watching it, ads came on so I went to get a drink of water. Come back expecting the skip button and the ads said 37 more minutes.... I waited for it to catch up and once it said 34 more minutes I gave up. Did I catch a glitch or are these the way things are goin?

Tony Peterson, the goat

Honestly there hasn’t been a Tony Peterson podcast, YouTube video, or “film” that I don’t love. He’s intelligent, well rounded, and just a down to earth Midwest man. His quick wit and humor have me loving everything he is apart of. Low key love that he seems like one of the few people that can give Steve shit and get away with it or just doesn’t care. What do you guys think?

I absolutely loved these videos. Super light hearted and fun. Randall absolutely cracked me up just gradually getting redder as the days went on.

High Quality Post Lachlan Morton is trying to ride the Pony Express route faster than anyone in history

FIle under: Cool american history, possible trivia questions

He's already passed the halfway point, but this has been so fun to follow along with.

Link to the tracker and trail journal

From EF Pro Cycling's site

On October 5th, Lachlan Morton will set out on his next challenge: racing across the American West on one of the nation’s most fabled routes.

Lachlan is going to try to ride the route of the Pony Express faster than the horsemen who carried mail from St. Joseph, Missouri, to Sacramento, California, during the heyday of the legendary 19th-century postal service.

He admires the courage of the young riders who signed up for that wild, high-speed horseback relay across the prairies and mountains that connect the western states.

“The way they could get mail across the country at that speed – before there was any railroad connecting it – was revolutionary,” Lachlan said. “The idea of people traversing such massive distances just captured my imagination, especially knowing a lot of that terrain. Think of these big open spaces – huge plains, mountain ranges – and you imagine a slow transition, but with the elevation and the vegetation it's always evolving, and when you're covering big distances you get a really diverse variety of riding. It's a great canvas for adventure. It's existed there for so long, and you feel like you're participating in what the country is all about."

The Pony Express was founded in 1860 with the promise to deliver mail across the West by horse in 10 days or less. The fastest recorded time for the 1,966-mile (3,164-kilometer) route, which crossed Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, Nevada, and California, was set in 1861, when young horsemen carried Abraham Lincoln's inaugural address the distance in seven days and 17 hours, changing horses every 10 miles (16 kilometers) and riders every 75 to 100 miles (120 to 160 kilometers). They carried the message that helped persuade California to remain in the Union.

Sad to hear this. Tenth Legion is one of the best hunting books ever written IMO. It has been mentioned on the podcast at least a couple times over the years. I read several of Tom Kelly’s other books and enjoyed those as well.

The MeatEater Podcast Dr. Meltzer and overkill hypothesis

Thought some of you might enjoy this scientific drama given that Dr. Meltzer has been on the podcast so many times.

Here are three articles which includes Dr Meltzer and his colleagues (led by Dr. Grayson) responding to the original and in turn the original authors responding to them debating a concept called the associational critique. The associational critique is basically that if overkill hypothesis is true, then why do we have no record of humans harvesting so many of these species that they supposedly wiped out. Dr. Meltzer is a supporter of this critique and even brought it up on his podcast appearance this year.

This is part of a funny scientific debate where there is a rift between archaeologists vs palaeontologists and ecological modellers. Archaeologists generally believe climate was the primary driver of quaternary extinction because of the lack of physical evidence for overkill, while the other groups who generally support overkill have stronger (but not universal) model support and don't think the question is only an archaeological one.

I think it would be interesting if Steve had some of these viewpoints from the more ecological modelling side on the podcast sometime.

The MeatEater Podcast Can we bring back Radio Live? Even if it’s not live?

I know I’m not alone. I LOVED Radio Live. I rarely actually got to listen/watch live, but it was still amazing. Do we need to start a petition or something? There’s not any version of the universe where did trade Radio Live for the News Show.

News Show

I hate to be a Debbie downer, because I really enjoy the meateater podcast products, however; the last few News Shows have just lacked juice to me. They’re lower energy and the backend interviews seem a little bit repetitive with the Monday shows.

This energy is further worsened by how good radio live was, in my opinion. I just want more free form with Spencer, and Randall, and Phil quips. More of Brodie just being an old man yelling at clouds. Just basically more fun and lighthearted conversations.

I suppose I’m now the old man yelling at clouds.

Every book mentioned on The MeatEater Podcast in September (37 of them)

Eric Jay Dolin had to set the record straight: "Very few whaling stories have cannibalism." In the Heart of the Sea got named as one that does.

I run Podshelf, a free site that tracks book mentions across hundreds of podcasts by reading the episode transcripts. This is the MeatEater slice for September.

  • The Wreck of the Mentor, Dolin's new book. He also explained how Melville jumped ship from a whaler, spent a couple of years in the Marquesas and got Typee and Omoo out of it.
  • Frozen Fauna of the Mammoth Steppe (R. Dale Guthrie), where the rotten mammoths episode got Blue Babe, a freeze-dried bison with a lion's tooth snapped off in the hide.
  • The Mysterious Mr. Nakamoto (Benjamin Wallace). Steve on his friend's "wonderful book" about trying to unmask whoever invented Bitcoin.

One panelist started Dune in high school and found it "too esoteric."

Full list with quotes and episodes: https://podshelf.io/podcasts/the-meateater-podcast

Edit: Podshelf stays free. If you find it useful and want to help with the server and data costs, there's a tip jar: https://buymeacoffee.com/podshelf

Has Steve ever spoken much about the UP?

It recently dawned on my how little you hear him talk about the Upper Peninsula of Michigan compared to Alaska and other locations. He’s from Michigan and I feel like it’s one of the more wild places in the lower 48.

Personally, I would take the trade of not hunting in national parks if that means they won't start doing stupid shit in them. Leave parks fucking protected. Leave all wilderness area fucking Wilderness.

I thought this video was great. They showed the frustration of just seeing does, stumbling around on steep terrain, horrible bushwhacking around creeks, and how it all paid off in the end.

Spencer was absolutely correct about Craters of the moon

I totally agree with Spencer. Giving us craters of the moon is absolute fluff. Let them open up some parks with actual animal activity and then let's talk about it being a win.
