Announcement r/lowendgaming is looking for new moderators!

Hey, r/lowendgaming!

We’re looking for new mods to join the team! It’s been a few years since we last opened applications, so what better time to do it than now? We could certainly use the extra help!

Here’s what we’re looking for in candidates, at a minimum:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Reddit account must be at least 1 year old.
  • Have at least 1,000 comment karma.
  • Account must have a verified email address (for added security measure; trophy should be visible on your profile).
  • Be in good standing with r/lowendgaming (no previous bans and no history of serious or repeated rule violations).
  • Ideally, have been consistently active on r/lowendgaming over the past three months.
  • If no recent activity on r/lowendgaming, your profile history needs to be visible for vetting purposes.
  • Available to moderate for a few hours each week and able to perform mod duties regularly.
  • Possess basic knowledge of computer hardware (CPUs, GPUs, RAM, etc).

While previous moderation experience is always a plus, it’s not required. We’re more than happy to teach anyone who’s willing to learn the ropes.

We’ll keep the application open for approximately two weeks, with the first deadline on October 25, 2026 at 12AM ET (UTC-4). At that point, we’ll decide whether to close it or extend the deadline. As long as this post is pinned, we’re still accepting applications. While we'd greatly prefer to select new mods from the r/lowendgaming community, we may eventually share the application on r/needamod to expand our candidate pool if we don't receive enough applications from within the subreddit.

Please apply by completing the Airtable application linked below. The application will take approximately 15-20 mins to fill out. If you have any questions about the mod role or the application process, feel free to send us a modmail! Thank you!

Announcement We Were Mentioned (Favorably) in PC Gamer Magazine!

Issue 403 | Holiday 2025 By Phil Iwaniuk

"Head over to Reddit and go on /r/lowendgaming and you’ll be struck by a few things. Firstly, that a community of people has been helping each other to run games on inexpensive and outdated PC hardware for many years, long before all the insidious price hikes we’re enduring today. And secondly, members of that community have been doing so with no small amount of ingenuity.

A typical exchange in that subreddit goes like this: a user states their hardware and asks for recommendations they should play, or whether a particular title will run on their machine. In the replies, people assure them that they managed to get The Witcher 3 on medium settings running on a relatively basic array of elastic bands and wooden pulleys. The prevailing sentiment is that minimum requirements are over-cautious, that modern games running at their lowest graphics settings still look more than decent enough to constitute playable, and that maybe there’s no such thing as a PC that’s too old or underpowered. Intrigued, I decided to test out the theory."

Community Discussion Fortnite is coming to Linux, which is a big W for low end gamers.

With Epic's new Easy Anti Cheat version, this means that Fortnite as well as other games relying on EAC can come to Linux.

This means 2 big things.

Linux is far more friendly to low end hardware without much RAM or CPU power compared to Windows. Instead of using 6GB RAM for literally no reason on a fresh boot, it can use as little as 400MB. There is no background junk running and using your CPU either and that helps older CPUs. This can be huge especially for integrated graphics since the iGPU relies on system RAM for its vram.

Also, Fortnite on Linux will be forced into using Vulkan as an API rather than DX12. Vulkan is just a lot faster and efficient so you'll likely have higher FPS and less lag on lower end hardware.

Game Review [Mod Approved] SweatyPanzer a multiplayer tank shooter

Game title: SweatyPanzer

What it is: an endless free-for-all game that you can join and leave whenever you like. Every kill earns a card draw that upgrades your tank or swaps you into another one. Die and you start over in a Panzer IV. The map changes every 6 minutes, and after 10 draws in one life your tank becomes the bounty, with 4 minutes to survive.

Nothing gets installed. You pick a nickname and you are in a match in about ten seconds.

Minimum specs:

  • OS: Windows 10 (1903 or newer), macOS 13, ChromeOS 113, or Linux with current Vulkan drivers
  • Browser: Chrome 113+ or Edge 113+. It runs on WebGPU so Firefox and Safari do not work yet
  • CPU: Intel Core i3-6100U or AMD Ryzen 3 2200U. Dual core, 2 GHz
  • GPU: integrated is fine. Intel HD Graphics 520 (6th gen), NVIDIA GTX 950 or AMD RX 460 and upwards
  • RAM: 4 GB
  • Storage: 0. About 14 MB goes into the browser cache

The GPU line is the one that matters. Anything older than those has no WebGPU support, so it will refuse to start rather than run badly.

Peripherals: Keyboard and mouse. WASD drives, the mouse aims the turret, left click fires, and 1, 2 and 3 pick a card in Arena.

Where to play: https://sweatypanzer.com/

Bugs and support: post bugs here, or use FEEDBACK in the lobby menu (F8 during a match).
I'll personally greet you in-game. Would love to hear what you think.

What Games Can I Run? Free games that require AVX?

Weird thing to ask for, I know. But I'm sure many here have found free games that you were pretty sure your PC could run, but ended up not working because of the three letters of doom your old/low-end CPU doesn't have.

Not free, but for me the most recent was Persona 5 Royal, that one really hurt considering Persona 3 Reload (way newer) actually runs just fine.

Not really relevant, but my specs are a G4560, 16 GB RAM and a GT 1030. I say not relevant because I'm not looking for games that run on this machine, though it is better if they are lightweight despite the AVX requirement.

What Games Can I Run? Looking for cute adventure games on Steam that can run on my low-end laptop

Hi everyone! 😊

I'm looking for game recommendations on Steam that can run on my low-end laptop.

My specs:

  • CPU: Intel Core i5-1035G1
  • GPU: Intel UHD Graphics
  • RAM: 8 GB
  • SSD: 256 GB

I'm looking for something cute, cozy, or visually charming, but with a little more depth than a simple casual game. I'd love some adventure, exploration, an interesting story, puzzles, or a sense of progression.

I enjoy beautiful atmospheres and games that make you feel immersed in their world. I'm open to different genres as long as the game isn't too demanding for my PC.

What would you recommend? I'd really appreciate suggestions that run well on integrated graphics, preferably with good performance on low settings.

Thanks! 💗

What Games Can I Run? Which games you loved most on low end pc you had?

I am wondering what low end pc gamers are really playing? When you have a low end pc and you have to be very selective when it comes to the games, I wonder how people choose their games? I am a low end gamer myself - with system specs from last decade (i5 3rd + Rx 550).

I would also love to see how you people manage the games to run at playable framerates, that way I learn a thing or two!

I usually love KCD 1 (720p) - that is the most beautiful game i can play on my system. I played Skyrim for almost 3-4 years (single game that hold place in my age old pc), and some light games - like stardew valley, graveyard keeper, etc. I loved planet crafter as well (720p). I am starting subnautica and subnautica 2, not played them yet.

I love to see what you all like, and what you can suggest me on this low end machine.

Tech Support GTA V legacy on laptop

I have a Surface Laptop Go with an intel i5 1035G1, Intel integrated graphics, 8GB of DDR4 ram and 128 GB of eMMC. I have GTA V on an external SATA SSD, and when I run it at 720p full screen with the lowest settings, it only gets around 30 FPS. How can I improve it to 60 fps?

Parts Upgrade Advice Memory configuration

I have an old laptop that I use for work and also gaming on the go. It has an i7-7700HQ and a GTX 1070 with windows 11 installed. So it would certainly benefit from any possible performance boost.

The laptop came with a single 16 GB 2600 MTs DDR4 SODIMM. I play on 1080p and I cap the frame rate to 60, so I almost never hit the 16 GB memory limit.

My friend gave me an 8 GB DDR4 stick. So I figured I would get better performance if I install it since I would be running in dual channel. But it runs at 2300 MTs, so it would bring my original 16 GB stick down to 2300 as well. My question is, during active gameplay in a typical AAA game, would I be better off using the single 16 GB stick at 2600 MTs or using dual channel but at 2300 MTs ?

Edit: first of all thanks to all the replies. Seems like the general consensus is that it's better to install the additional RAM. I have installed it and run some benchmarks using Geekbench. I know it's not the best benchmark software out there but it's lightweight and I already had its installation on my system. Basically there was no noticable difference. All results (CPU single & Multi-core and GPU Vulkan) with or without the additional RAM are within the margin of error. I will update the post in the future if I try better tests.

Parts Upgrade Advice Advice for a new motherboard + cpu?

My aging desktop needs a new motherboard (issues with the back i/o) so I figured I'd upgrade while I'm at it, I was hoping to get some advice?

specs:

i5-4440

16gb ddr3 1600mhz (I have another mismatched stick of 8gb not in use, same speed)

1050ti 4gb

480gb ssd, 500gb hdd

250 watt psu

I'd like to stay under 160 CAD for a new motherboard, cpu, maybe another stick of 8gb of ram if that's a good idea. Use case wise, it can already scrape by for the games I play the most (Genshin, Fallout 4, Skyrim, Team Fortress 2, Sims 4, Minecraft), but a better cpu would be much appreciated.

PC Purchase Advice Low end PC guide for oct 2026

Seeing a few posts asking what people should get in terms of gaming PCs. I'll talk about what people could get for a budget of 300$ CAD (in Canada).

To order my thoughts I will write component by component, but keep in mind that all components are part of a system and affect each other.

context: It's absolute garbage to build PCs right now, and it will keep on getting worse for the upcoming few years at least. There are shortages of many components that are part of graphics cards, storage, ram, to name a few.

One of the worse aspects of the situation re: AI, is that corporations have basically stopped offering affordable options. GPUs used to be relatively more affordable, then would head onto the used market, lose a few % of value per year, and eventually become affordable. Nowadays, everything that comes out basically costs the price of an entire computer. Anyhow, that being said, what remains available?

---

Starting point : DDR3 ram, 16 gig.

RAM generation(3-4-5) is about the speed in MHz, or megatransfers(MT/s, same thing). DDR3 ram goes up to 1600 mhz, DDR4 3200, DDR5 around 8000.

Gigs is about capacity. If you don't have enough capacity, the whole computer slows down and stutters. The computer seems to do one, or the other, but can't do both at the same time.

As technology evolves, it becomes more bloated. Windows 11, standard version, is really wasteful. You'll be using more than 5 gigs in iddle, 8 the minute you have a few tabs open in your web browser. 16 is the new minimum.

DDR3-1600 MHz, 16 gig(2x8 or 4x4) can be found for as little as 5$, but with current pricing trends you may have to pay 30$.

---

Storage : HDD is too slow, NVME is too expensive, get SSD.

This is about the loading speed of games and their various components. Certain games won't start at all if you're running an old HDD, but really the issue is that HDDs are about as expensive as SSDs.

So get a SSD, which is still fast enough to play anything, and give you a decent computer experience otherwise. HDDs are still better for total capacity, but they aren't good enough for everyday computing anymore.

Pure budget leads to a 256g SSD, and honestly you can make it work with 256. At worse, play one or two games at a time, delete them when you want to play something else and re-download when you want to go back.

I would still encourage to look for 500g. SSDs should never be near full, and if you use your computer for work, picture and video storage, gaming, etc., you will fill up that 256 eventually.

Try to get life % above 60%, as you will find way better prices the lower that % is. Unless you read and write massive amounts of data, that 60% will last you years and years.

256g = around 40$

500g = around 70$, and climbing. I wouldn't pay more than 80$ for a 500g SSD.

-----

CPU and motherboard: go ham.

DDR3 era CPUs can be found in the bargain bin. Find the best CPU the motherboard can handle, and try to either find a bundle with it, or resell the one you find, and find the best one.

The I7-4790k is the best one, the i5-3570 is also good.

New hardware can't even run the newest games at high settings, you won't be able to with these CPUs, but, you'll play almost anything else(unless the game requires things like Ray Tracing, or something).

---

Graphics card : 1060, RX 580, stay with the know unknowns.

These care still budget kings, and will get you by at a decent price. If you can find better, go for it, but as a starting point, cheap option, go around these models and generation.

They key consideration here is bottleneck. If you get a GPU that is too good, you'll waste your money on hardware that won't be able to work at full capacity, because the CPU won't feed it information fast enough. Get one that is too slow, and the opposite is happening, on the side of the CPU.

That second scenario is more rare because CPUs tend to last longer than GPUs. Hence, GPUs tend to be more recent, and better, and get bottlenecked instead of the other way around.

Another consideration is VRAM, but my opinion is that for 1080p gaming, it is not the end of the world if you get 6g. Anything undre 6g though, and it can be problematic. There is a balance between computing power(Hz of speed) and VRAM availability. You'd rather get a 1660s 6g than a rx 580 8g, for instance.

1060 = 60-70$, wouldn't pay more than 80.

RX 580 = same price, can be found for 50, and maybe less.

---

Power supply, fans, CPU cooler, case : you get what you get. Try to find something that is at least clean. What you want is functionnal, something that was taken care of by the seller, something clean.

Things that are caked under 10inch of dust and cigarette oil should probably be avoided.

---

What to look for:

Complete builds with more or less what you need. 16g DDR3, a 1060, a 256 or 500g SSD computer is pretty common to find. You can try to wait for a decent price.

Get most of what you want, and upgrade as time goes by. Like I said DDR3 ram is relatively cheap, so is a CPU upgrade of that era.

Bonus : - A non stock CPU cooler goes a long way to keep everything cool and quiet, if you see a standing cooler, someone cared enough to buy it and instal it.

- Get a debloated version of Win 11, through Rufus. Activate it with Windows activation script. It's all free, you just have to watch Youtube tutorials.

- Ask questions and test. What are the temps under load? When's the last time it was used and to do what? You'll want to find out how hot the GPU and CPU got, and if they were performing normally. You'll also want to know if the PSU can handle the computer running at max load for extended periods of time.

If everything is cool, stable, and runs for 30 min straight without anything going wrong, you probably have a nice machine ahead of you.

---

Testing software once you buy your machine :

Temps : HWinfo(sensors) + Prime95 for CPU/RAM testing, Furmark for GPU testing. Run Prime 95 and Furmark at the same time to find out if your PSU can handle it. Let it run for 15 min, or more, for a thorough stress test.

Diskgenius for SMART information on your storage(how healthy it is)

Before buying, test to see that all USB and all other plugs are still working, to know if the motherboard has issues.

Listen to the computer. Weird noises coming from the power supply can indicate a unit that is ending it's useful life.

---

Anyhow, hope this helps !

Tech Support Reducing monitor refresh to avoid tearing at sub 60fps

My GPU is getting a bit long in the tooth and can no longer maintain 60fps in modern titles. I can pretty reliably get above 50fps, so I thought to set my monitor's refresh to 50hz and turn on vsync in games to get a reasonably smooth experience with no screen tearing. Does anyone else do this? Are there any drawbacks?
