Tell us your story...

Everyone is lonely, but not everyone is lonely in the same way.

Some people are lonely when they're physically isolated from others and some people are lonely even in a room full of people that love them.

Those are two common examples, but there are endless ways in which people can feel lonely, 8 billion ways in fact.

And there's not always a clear answer; some people are just lonely. It's a normal part of the human condition to feel lonely, and while you may want or even need to do everything in your power to rid yourself of it (depending on the severity of your situation), just know that being lonely in and of itself doesn't necessarily mean that there's anything wrong with you.

We don't measure or rate or judge each person's level of loneliness here and decide if they're "lonely enough" to be welcome here nor do we dictate any absolutes about the conditions for being lonely or how someone must behave if they're "actually lonely."

Every human-being in the world is welcome here, and their story for how they feel loneliness is valid; their pain is valid. As with most things in life, there's the book definition of a thing and then there's the complex emotional reality of a thing. Loneliness is a relative experience, and the way some people experience it won't always make sense to others, and it doesn't have to.

Just as there is no one-size-fits-all approach to feeling loneliness, there is no one-size-fits-all approach to healing either.

I don't presume to know your pain; we don't know your pain; tell us about it:

If you're feeling such extreme pain from loneliness to the point of contemplating suicide, please don't. Just don't.

Things to consider:

  • How old are you? Did you know that the brain isn't fully developed until around the age of 25? That means that if you're a child, teenager, or even a young adult, by merely waiting out the storm, you might find sunshine on the other side, by simply maturing into the fully-formed you.

  • How bad is it? As bad as it can get, it can almost always be worse. It's important to respect everyone's pain, because it's relative. As much empathy as one can have, you can never really feel another's pain, only your own. Still, it's important to keep perspective and think about the cruelty and lack of freedom experienced by those around the world.

  • Time is a master in its work. We've all heard the saying that "Time heals all wounds." Well, it's pretty true for the most part. As long as you first get away from the toxic people, places, or circumstances that are hurting you and causing you trauma, the healing can begin. How long it will take, really depends on the person, and what they've experienced. It took me years to get over some of the trauma that I suffered. It's not that I don't still feel some level of pain from it, but my trauma no longer owns me; I own my trauma.

Suicide prevention starts and ends with you. Life is full of neverending beauty and darkness. I don't know about you, but I want to see it all. I want to stay on the path that is existence for as long as I can, even if at times, I have to walk through broken glass.

But, sometimes you need a little help. Share your thoughts here in this sub, reach out to a mental health expert, or maybe give a suicide hotline a try. As tacky and empty of a gesture as it might seem to put out the cliché boilerplate message: "If you're having suicidal thoughts..." I don't know, maybe these tools are actually pretty helpful for some people? It might be worth a try. The big one is:

Caution: Making New Connections

Many people come here just to share their story, vent, or get perspective, with no interest in connecting beyond their posts, and that's completely fine. Others do want to make connections, and that's fine too, but it's worth being careful.

We'll leave the decisions up to you, but here are a few things to keep in mind:

  1. Don't share personal details too quickly. You don't need to give your real name, age, or location. Being vague is okay, and people worth connecting with will respect that.

  2. Protect your contact info. Avoid sharing your phone number, email, or home address early on. There are free tools that let you communicate safely without exposing your real info.

  3. Be cautious with links and files. Don't click links or download anything from someone you don't know well yet.

  4. If they ask you for money, stop. It doesn't matter how the request is framed or how long you've been talking, block them and cut contact. This is always a scam.

If you do decide to connect with someone, these tools can help you do it more safely:

  • Messaging: Signal is a free app for secure messages and calls.
  • Email: Gmail or Proton let you create an address that isn't tied to your real name.
  • Phone: Google Voice gives you a phone number you can call and text from without using your personal number.
  • Browser: Firefox has built-in privacy protection that masks your IP address.
  • Mail: A PO Box at your local post office is inexpensive if you ever need to give a mailing address.

One more thing. Be mindful of the usernames and photos you share. If they match other accounts you have online, someone could easily link them together and find out your real name, location, or other details you didn't mean to expose.

I know I used to feel lonely but that feeling has forever been extinguished from me and I'm scared. Is this the end?

27yo F with no friends

So, as the title states I’m 27 with no friends. I use to have lots of friends but I prioritized working on my future because I realized I wasn’t getting anywhere at the rate I was going. I stopped being available to hang out just so that I can study and go to work. I support myself and my two youngest siblings, so working was a nonnegotiable. Now that I graduated with my B.S. in electrical engineering and landed a position at a big aerospace company I find myself lonely. I have a bf but sometimes I feel like I rely on him too much when I feel lonely and that isn’t healthy.

Now that I achieved my main goals, I think what now? I thought I’d feel different. I love my job it’s my dream job but I realize I should make meaningful connections with friends. The friends I have never seem to have time to hangout but then I see their IG stories and they are out with other friends.

I just feel like I’ve always been that friend that no one tries to hang out with. As in really makes an effort to get a coffee and hang out , something simple. I miss my friends. I message them to see if we can hang out and it’s always the same response. “I miss you too, yes we need to find time to hang out” never happens.

Idk maybe I’m overthinking it but I thought I’d vent here and see what others have to say.

I'm not sure who im writing this to, or why. But this is truly what my heart looks like. At least i think anyway..

Hello, whoever is reading this and thank you, I know its a bit long... Im a 31 year old male in a pretty severe position of isolation, solitude, or however you care to define it. I just want to start this with a disclaimer, and say that this is not a cry for help, or an attempt to find love or anything like that. Just something that i need to put out there. I have really for the most part given up on trying to find genuine people or working towards a life where i'm not alone forever. It's not a hopeless, gloom and doom type of given up though, and honestly I've become quite content with it. For a very long time it was difficult. A lot of emotional pain that I had no choice but to learn to live with. Over time I've learned to find comfort and beauty in the pain, and accept that everything happens for a reason. Maybe my reason has already served its purpose in someones life, or maybe one day it will. Or maybe I'm just an extra in the movie that we know as "life",and my reason is nothing more than to fill space. But I dont worry about these things anymore. If your so focused on chasing something, whether it be your purpose, or happiness, or success, or love, it will blind you and when it comes along you wont be able to see it. I cant tell you how many times ive missed things that I wanted so badly, simply because i was blinded by the desire for it. I couldnt recognize that all i had to do was stop chasing it. And every single time, i ended up losing it, only then did i realize what i had lost. When i was younger i had lots of friends, girlfriends, i had money, i was liked, i almost even had a wife at one point. But i didnt realize how good things really were, and slowly one by one lost all of them. i've spent so many nights awake drowning in my own regret, knowing that i have nobody to blame but myself, and in all honesty, sometimes that pain still comes back to visit me. But ive sort of made friends with it. Ive accepted that it may end up being the closest thing to a friend that ill ever know, and if i keep drowning in it, i might miss out on ever truly having anyone. Before i could accept it though it was so loud, deafening, blinding. So much pain i couldnt even tell what was real and what wasnt. For a long long time i was on a mission of self destruction, in my mind i was worthless and just wanted the pain to stop. Id have dreams about the wife i had lost, dreams that we were still happy together, and wake up back into my miserable existence and just lay there for hours with my heart splitting in half and trying to cry enough to put myself back to sleep just to see her again. And it took a long time to learn to live with that pain, and those dreams, because believe me, i still have them. i just learned to appreciate them instead of let them suffocate me. While everything that ive ever been blessed with, i have foolishly squandered away and has ended with me alone and hurting, eventually i found out why those things happened. See all the pain and struggle, and trauma that came from those things has completely shaped me into a different person. It tought me a lot, a lot of things that i dont think many people ever truly understand. And it made me a better person. And even if nobody is around to see the person that it made me, im fine with that. Of course i do hope that one day i will have someone i can give my true self to and maybe we can enjoy being alone, together haha. But i wont chase it, if its meant to come, it will come. if not, there is a reason. Sorry for the novel, i probably should stop now because i could literally write a book if i keep going. But if you've made it this far, thank you, maybe someone will even find some use out of this. either way ill stop now though.

I'm tierd of constantly trying to approach men as a women , it never ends well and I can't get a boyfriend

So I have never had a boyfriend and I've been single for 7 years and I've always tried to be the first person to come up to a guy and it would end up in a disaster and that's what caused me to be traumatized and from approaching men and i hate how i have to be the one doing all of this because no man has approached me or talked to me and it made me stay in fear of never having a boyfriend ever, also I've gotten complements from men in real life but like they never asked me for my number, I feel like if I dont approach a guy I'll lose every freaken chance, I Don't understand how other women naturally attract men without doing anything and the guys just come to her cause that never happened to me maybe because I'm not a white women with blonde hair and blue eyes cause most of the guys that I liked were into white girls, I absolutely don't know what to do anymore and i have intense anxiety and I feel like I'll never get married or have sex and trust I've tried online dating and it never ended good and no I don't want to online date and I was heart broken by one of my friends once because of telling him I like him , I just want to cry, and people tell me we'll you need to love yourself blah blah blah like that doesn't work cause I've always been confident and pretty but I still never pulled a guy

There's a black hole inside me that keeps growing and consuming everything I love.

• Upvotes

I've been really busy the last few months, trying new stuff, hanging out with friends or doing some work. Today I woke up, no plans, no nothing. I just woke up, laid in bed and thought of how miserable my life is.

I have a caring family, good friends I can count on (even though the're not perfect), I'm very active, doing sports and going out in the nature a lot, I have two dogs who give me all the love anyone could need. I'm currently in college and even though I'm not really that good in my major, I try my best and I also didn't accumulate any debt, it's quite the opposite, I even have a decent amount of savings in my savings account.

So I thought to myself: I probably have it better than 95% of all the people on earth - so why do I feel like such a loser. I've had that mindset for over 5 years now, and spend every single bit of free time I have, to improve myself; to be kinder, to look better, to just not feel that way. It gets exhausting, doing everything to improve oneself for 5 years and still feeling the same. The longer it's been going on, the less I enjoy things. I can't even laugh without thinking how ugly I must look right now.

One thing that bugs me, something I technically could be doing something about is getting in a relationship. But my self consciousness keeps me away from that. Also, I don't want to hurt anyone while I'm being like this. I was never popular with girls either, I always was more of an ugly duckling, getting laughed at by girls in my school. I changed my appearance, started working out but this 15 year old me is still there. I wouldn't say I'm good looking now but I'm not ugly as well either (at least I hope so), but there's a look I'm never going to have because of my poor lifestyle choices in puberty.

I kind of adapted to my mindset, to keep myself as busy as possible: school work on that day, grabbing food with a friend on another day, signing up for boxing classes with another friend. I'm surrounded by people but when I get home and have some time to let my mind roam free, I feel like the loneliest person alive.

I also went to therapy, to a family friend (a licensed psychologist) who helped me in my early teens. I told him that he "cured" me and that I'm alright now, but deep down I know it wasn't true. Talking him just didn't help.

Maybe it's just the way I am. I don't know.

Why do I want to be alone but still feel lonely? 😭🥀

Don't know why, but I feel like sabse cut off kar lu aur akele rahu. Like, everyone just enjoys my peace, but almost everyone, bc, tumhari peace kharab karne pe laga hua hai. That's why maine Insta, WhatsApp aur calls wagera kisi ka pick karna band kar rakha hai 1–2 din se. But ab akele rehke lonely bhi feel ho raha hai, aur baaki kisi se baat karne ka mann bhi nahi kar raha. What's that stage, yrr? 😭🥀

I think I can’t take it anymore

Yes, I have a wife, a dog and 2-3 friends. I love em all.
But I always feel lonely. I don’t know what’s wrong with me, besides having a chronic depression for 11/12 years now. (I am in therapy)

I often feel like I am some kind of an alien. I just can’t connect to people. I would love to make new friends. I would love to have hobbies or just do something with my life. But I can’t. I tried moving. I lived in a couple of cities (big and small). I tried out hobbies. I tried meeting with ppl who seemed nice. But I always feel a distance. It just doesn’t work or feels natural.

Don’t get me wrong I am really really thankful for my wife and dog. Without them I wouldn’t be here anymore. And my friends I have since my early teenage days are great too. But they are still living in my hometown and I am not. So mostly we hang on Discord every couple of weeks. Wherever I lived I felt alone and I think on some point I just gave up. I am really introverted and I pretty much stay at home. I am lucky when I have the power to play some video games. But most of the time I just binge shit on YouTube I don’t even care about or doom scroll.

I just don’t know what to do. Is this my life now till the end?

(Sorry if my English is bad. I am not from an English speaking country.)

In my life, I only encountered people who later forgot me.

When we were in the same class, we used to be good friends; but as we moved to different grades and our classes changed, the people around me changed too. It wasn’t that they didn’t talk to each other—they just didn’t talk to me, nor did they ever come to see me. And this happens every single time. Sometimes, I feel like there isn’t anyone in my life whom I could truly call a close friend. Some of my acquaintances have many friends; perhaps that’s why they don’t need me. When we do talk, they share inside jokes or gossip that I don’t understand, and they never bother to explain them to me. Because of this, it feels as though I have no one with whom I can share everything—and in truth, there really is no one. I am in my late teens now, and I still don’t have anyone with whom I can share everything—not even the smallest piece of gossip or a simple joke; as for my personal problems, I don’t share those with anyone at all. This is just an experience of mine that I’m writing down here—nothing more. Yet, I still long for the day when I will have a friend who knows everything about me—perhaps even things that I don’t yet know about myself.

Why can’t I find love?

I am 22F, having a really good job, I’d like to believe I am also decently attractive and fun to be around. I value kindness and yearn for a deeper connection. I am being approachable and available as well. Why can’t I just find love?
