Moving to Klaipėda

Post image

Hii!

I am in final stages of landing a job in Klaipėda and still unsure if I would want to move. I'm coming from Croatia, from continental part.

I would appreciate if you could share how is life there, coast of living, how is the public transportation since I do not plan to take a car with me if I move. Im 27 years old, so also would like to know if there are things to do for a younger population? They are offering 2500 euro/gross pre month. Do you think that salary is ok to cover the rent and still have a some amount to put to saving?

Thank you for any advice!

Klaipėda is a relatively small and quiet city with lots of greenery and parks. There is a fairly distinct divide between the northern and southern parts of the city. The north is generally considered a nicer and more expensive place to live, while the south has more of a post-Soviet feel, with large residential apartment blocks.

There isn't much of a nightlife scene compared to Vilnius or Kaunas, but the city has a relaxed atmosphere. Public transport is pretty good, especially if you live near one of the main bus routes. The city is also relatively compact, so getting around by bus, bike, or even on foot is fairly easy.

One of the biggest advantages is the proximity to the sea and the Curonian Spit, a unique stretch of land famous for its enormous sand dunes, pine forests, and beautiful beaches. You can take a short ferry ride from Klaipėda and be surrounded by nature in no time. It's great for cycling, hiking, swimming, or just escaping the city for a day. Having such a unique natural area practically on your doorstep is definitely one of Klaipėda's biggest perks.

Traffic is generally manageable, and the pace of life is slower than in the bigger Lithuanian cities.

As for salaries, €2.5k gross (around €1.5k net) is roughly enough for a single person to live comfortably, depending on rent and lifestyle. You won't be living luxuriously, but you should be able to afford a decent life.

The city changes quite a bit in summer, when tourists arrive and the coastline becomes much livelier. During the rest of the year, it's noticeably quieter. The downside is that Klaipėda can be quite windy and gloomy, especially during autumn and winter.

Overall, I'd say Klaipėda is a good choice if you value peace, nature, the sea, and a slower pace of life more than nightlife or a wide range of entertainment options.

thank you for the comment. Forgot to ask in the port, is it normal to get additional to up to the salary? Like here we get Christmas and Easter bonus (around 200-300 euro each)

It depends on company. I would say 33% companies i worked only had "company christmas party" instead of any bonus, 33% had a small present (from gift bag(30eur) to 100eur gift card) and 33% had a "13 salary" - one month payment bonus at the end of year.

Depends on what you are looking for. I live in Klaipėda, for me it's great. A calm, slow, but big enough to have all the shops and services you might need. Salary is okay, you can find a place to live and save some if you are not looking at living in the luxurious place. Rent in Klaipėda is way cheaper than Vilnius or Kaunas.

haven't actually lived there but i've been there plenty of times, so i'll leave a comment. life's pretty nice there, you can go enjoy the sea and there's plenty to explore around, plenty of shops if you need them. 2500 euro gross isn't a lot, it'll get cut down to around 1500 euro, which is plenty for living comfortably because rent isn't crazy expensive, food costs probably around the same amount as in croatia, but if you want to save you won't have too much money for leisure. public transportation is fine, buses go around the whole city and can get you to where you need within a few tens of minutes

Not from Klaipeda so don't have anything to say regarding public transportation, however, if you're moving to work and save money, 2500 gross monthly, in my opinion, is not worth it at all.

Can check rough rent prices on aruodas.lt . There's an English option top right.

That's roughly 1500 net for your pay. You'll probably spend over half of your pay on rent+bills+groceries, if you're not looking for a shittier apartment or housemates. Then if you want to grab a drink, or eat out or something once in a while, it's going to further diminish it. Since you mentioned "younger population" I assume you're not just moving and isolating while spending the absolute minimum.

If you're feeling young and just want to move for the sake of experiencing a different place for a limited time (and maybe staying if career works out and life's good, but that not being the goal), I guess that's fine, but going there for the sake of more money when that is your pay doesn't seem like the best option if you got other options. The population is somewhere between 160k to 200k. Not the biggest city either, so not knowing the local language might leave you lonely and isolated. Vilnius would have more options for international younger people, however, managing rent/income might be harder.

That's my 2 cents.

yeah for sure not moving for the sake to save money. The position is english speaking and more international, what made me interesting is the job since it is more closer to the career I would like to switch to. I mostly spend my free time on training, not super crazy for going out.

Moved here from the province 10 years ago and it's great city for me. However, if you want adventure, it might not be for you.

2500 Eur gross is just a bit over 1500 Eur NET. It will be enough to cover rent and modest living expenses, but it’s not a “good” salary.

What is a good salary then? 2000 net?

Better indeed

Public transportation is good. I dont own a car and I dont feel it is as mandatory here unlike in Vilnius or Kaunas.

2500 gross means you will have 1400ish left after tax. 400 for food is more than comfortable for one person. a humble 1 room apartment for rent also roughly 400. Another 100 for phone, internet, etc. bills. Rest is up to you.

Cant say about activities as I dont go out.

You can check cost of livinkg here:
https://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/in/Klaipeda
Rent here:
https://en.aruodas.lt/butu-nuoma/klaipedoje/
2500 EUR gross would be 1500 EUR in hands, you will spend ~600 eur on rent, maybe more.
There would be shitty winters, so if your hobby is to drink beer and watch youtube it will be fine for you.

Please, please, please, do not move to Klaipėda. We want to keep it as a small and quiet city. Please go for a remote option.
