Calc Summing Currency
I suppose this is a feature request. I like using LibreOffice for local documents, but this is a lost opportunity. I receive CSVs with payout information, so they're preformatted. In the datasets, they signify the payout as a negative dollar amount (i.e. -$100.00).
Calc is incapable of figuring out how to SUM these. At first I thought it was the negative sign, then I thought it must be formatted as a string instead of currency...but for me to fix any of that would take more time than for me to just tally them by hand.
I dropped the CSV into Google Drive and it happily gave me the negative total with no fuss. I think that kind of functionality would be very useful to Calc.

Tip: getting Calc to SUM currency amounts from bank CSVs ("-$100.00")
Sharing something I ran into this week in case it saves someone the same hour.
Bank and payout CSVs often write amounts as text like "-$100.00". Open that in Calc and SUM returns 0, because the column comes in as text, not numbers. The fix is in the Text Import dialog, not in the cells.
When the import window opens, click the amount column in the preview, keep its Column type as Standard, set the Language dropdown above the preview to English (USA), and tick "Detect special numbers" under Other options. With US English active, "-$100.00" imports as a real currency value, thousands separators and all, and SUM works on it.
I tested this on a CSV containing -$100.00, -$250.50 and -$1,200.00. With the default import the column lands as text and SUM returns 0. With English (USA) set, the same cells import as -100, -250.50 and -1,200, and SUM returns -1,550.50.
If a file is already imported with the column as text, you don't have to re-import: select the column, then Data > Text to Columns opens the same dialog with the same Language setting, and the column re-parses in place. A helper column also works if you'd rather keep the originals: =VALUE(SUBSTITUTE(A2;"$";"")).
Two things that don't work: Find & Replace to strip the $ sign (the $ disappears but the cells stay text), and changing the cell format to Currency (formatting never converts text to numbers). Both still leave SUM at 0.

Question Issue with Calc: Tables Disappearing from Saved Files
Greetings all,
I've been wrestling with an issue in Calc that is somewhat frustrating, namely whenever I create a table, save and close a file, the table seems to have disappeared when reopening the file.
All data and cell formatting is saved, but the actual table containing it seems to have vanished. Searching online has yielded no solutions.
I did see a few mentions on some forums to uncheck Font Embedding in the properties, but these options are unchecked in my case. Furthermore I'm saving all my files in the native .ods format, leaving me unable to understand what exactly is going on. This happens for every single spreadsheet file I have.
I'm running LibreOffice 26.8.1.1 680(Build:1) on an up-to-date openSUSE Linux system.
Here are a couple of screenshots of the issue along with the example file in question:

Any help in understanding or resolving this issue will be greatly appreciated.

Needs more details The new module colours look so out of place and I can't exactly articulate why
The ribbon now looks like its... floating? idk. The colours seem out of place against the dark system theme. Maybe this would have worked if LO had a single coherent theme in all backends. Request funds for some graphics people guys.
Is there any way to disable it?

I am not sure what the design team is thinking. I think this is the reason why MSO doesn't use their module colours in dark mode (its more of a subtler accent). Random pic off the web:

Question Is there an easy way to extra edits from text?
EDIT. There's supposed to be the word "remove" somewhere on that heading.
I'm not sure how everything is called in English so my wording may be off.
When I use the function that highlights chapter styles, the highlight has diagonal stripes over it if the chapter has added formatting. For example, the text has bullet points when the style doesn't originally have them. When I hover over the highlighed part, it says the name of the style and something like "+ chapter formatting".
Is there an easy way to revert the chapter back to the unformatted version of the style and pretty much just remove the "+ chapter formatting".
Cloning the unedited version from a different part of the text doesn't work (and seems to make very inaccurate clones especially when it comes to aligning bullet points).
Cutting the text and pasting it unedited doesn't work.
Changing the style back and forth with another one doesn't (always) work.
Bullet points are of course easy to remove (and weirdly difficult to align) but sometimes I can't even easily tell what's been changed and while that should probably mean I should stop nitpicking if I can't even see the problem, it annoys me that I end up with 5 different styles that are supposed to be the same.

Question Is it possible to still use themes in the most recent version?
I love using background themes on my older copy of libreoffice - it's a small thing but it makes work that much nicer when I'm not staring at a black background constantly. Is there any way to still use themes in the most recent versions of libreoffice?
I'm aware we can use light/dark themes, but I'm really missing this level of customization. If there are any add-ons that bring this feature back I'd love to know!

How can I change my settings so documents open in LibreOffice rather than Word by default?
I recently switched from MS Word to LibreOffice, but sometimes I forget to open the menu to open it with LibreOffice. I'd like to have Word (and .odt, ideally) documents open in LibreOffice by default, but I can't remember how. I'm using a MacBook Pro with Tahoe 26.6.2; do I need to change this in my system settings or LibreOffice settings?
Edit: TalkToHoro's instructions worked! I'm going to ELI5 for the benefit of any hypothetical future reader with the same problem.
I had already tried right clicking the file and using "Open with…", which I was already doing to open the files in LibreOffice, but that menu didn't have an option for making LibreOffice the default. What worked was going to "Get Info" in the menu (or using the ⌘i keyboard shortcut) and going down to the "Open with" menu; underneath, it said "Use this application to open all documents like this one" above a button reading "Change All…", which became clickable after I used the menu to change it to LibreOffice. This is what it looked like.

Question Table of Contents
Finished a book, which is great. But I added a table of contents, but it isn't showing in epub readers.
I see it in Libre, set it to find the chapters by having it set to the TITLE HEADING.
Any suggestions?
Edit I exported as an epub in Libre.

Question How to remove this strange box?

As the title says, this strange box randomly appeared in the ruler bar above my document. It puts a hard stop on where my text can go, and the margin indicators shift with it for some reason. I haven't been able to find what it's called or how to get rid of it, so any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Bug? Navigator jumps back to the top of the bookmarks list when selecting a bookmark in LibreOffice Writer – any workaround?
Hi everyone,
I'm having a frustrating issue with LibreOffice Writer and the Navigator panel.
Whenever I browse through my list of saved bookmarks, selecting/clicking on a bookmark automatically resets the Navigator scroll position back to the very top of the list.
This makes navigating through a document with many bookmarks very inefficient, as I constantly have to scroll all the way back down to find where I was and select the next one.
What I need: I want to be able to scroll through the bookmarks list, click/select a bookmark, and keep the list at its current scroll position so I can continue browsing from where I left off.
Is there a hidden setting, a workaround, or a specific key combination to prevent the Navigator from jumping back to the top? Or is this a known bug/limitation?
- LibreOffice version: 26.8.03
- OS: Windows 11
Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions!

LW page zoom - how do you make it stick?
I view my pages at 133%. However, the custom zoom is set to 150% and LW always defaults to that on opening. I did once get it to remember 133%, but after an update, it defaulted to 150%, and it's stuck on that. Yes, I can change it on opening LW, but that's not the point.
Any help appreciated.

Question Libre office freezes in ubuntu
Hi, I desperately need help. I reently switched to linux (Ubuntu 26.04) and libre office (4:26.2.6.3-0ubuntu0.26.04.2) and libre office writer freezes with all of my documents. I'm currently working on a 13MB document, 57 pages long, and doing the most basic things (copy/paste, save etc) will make LO freeze and display the message "libre office isn't responding, you can wait or force to quit". Sometimes i wait and it unfreezes, sometimes i have to quit. Idk if it's relevant but I'm working on a remote file.
I tried opening in safe mode & updating libre office, it doesn't change anything. I'm a complete beginner when it comes to linux and have never coded in my life before switching to ubuntu, so if you have an idea of how to fix this, i'd really appreciate if you explain it in the simplest way possible.
(last resort would be to switch back to WPS office which i used before and worked great, but i hate the forced AI features) thank you to anyone who can help!
