Men's Walk and Talk

We are Alex, Andy, and Nik. We’ve been living in Iowa City for many years. We've decided to see if men would like to walk and talk twice a month locally.

Our purpose is twofold:

  1. To give men a non-judgmental space to talk about what’s going on for us.
  2. To open the door to a community of local friendships with men in a world that often makes that difficult to find/maintain.

Please note, this is not a religious or politically affiliated group.

Here’s why this matters. Cigna and other major organizations regularly share research confirming that over 50% of people in the US feel “sometimes or always alone.” Such levels of isolation can have health impacts equal to smoking. Lonely people face higher levels of heart disease, neurodegenerative disease, diabetes, cancer and so on. Many men struggle with loneliness even as we are busy working, caring for our kids, dealing with the daily demands of life. But research shows that men with a robust circle of friendships live longer healthier lives, have better marriages/relationships, feel more optimistic and are more successful in our personal and professional lives.

Cigna research: https://newsroom.thecignagroup.com/loneliness-in-america

Although we have some sense of how these talks might begin, the conversations will go where they go depending on the needs of each man. Men of any age are welcome to join us.

Rules:

  1. No politics
  2. Be yourself
  3. Respect confidentiality

The rules we use on our walks are meant to help us dial down to the personal and talk about what’s going on for us in our own lives. They are not absolute. They are guidelines.

Disclaimer: Walking Talking Men is not therapy and we are not therapists. We are not doing coaching. We are not doing men’s work. We are simply sharing information about how we are creating real, lasting, local friendships for men in our neighborhood. That’s it.

If you’d like to join us on a walk, send us an email to [walkingtalkingmeniowacity@gmail.com](mailto:walkingtalkingmeniowacity@gmail.com) with why this idea appeals to you. We’ll respond to all emails. We look forward to hearing from you.

When: Sunday, October 18th, 3pm.

Where: Meet at the parking lot of Terry Trueblood Rec Center pavilion: https://maps.app.goo.gl/pQZrVyhJ2pVgGPnA8

The walks are inspired by this story

CR to IC train

How cool would a train running from CR to IC be? It would help so many people commute. I understand this isn’t totally feasible but the idea is fun.

Travis Spevacek, Alexander Schmidt, and Corey Johnson. Can only vote for two so who should I be steering clear of? Can’t really find anything on their experience or track records.

City council moved and seconded a motion to kill the contract, but the city attorney hadn't seen the contract and wasn't able to say if and how the city could exit.

It will be raised again at the next meeting.

As someone who follows city council meetings on this topic, I will say this council was much more engaged and respectful of the public than is typical, and don't seem unaware of the issues.

The council seemed to want to hear how broad the opposition in the community is, and how it affects you, your work or business, and those around you. If you have a few minutes, reach out and send them a few sentences about your story.

I know it’s highly unlikely any of these people will be voted out but just trying to do my civic duty and gather whatever information might be out there in case any of these folks have a history of inappropriately enforcing the law in the course of their duties.

Judges on the ballot for retention voting (for ease of searching when others inevitably go looking to answer the same question):

Court of Appeals Judges
- Julie A. Schumacher
- Sharon Soorholtz Greer
- John M. Sandy

District Court Judges
- Mark Fisher
- Jason D. Beaker
- Michael Harris

District Court Associate Judges
- Casey D. Jones
- Angie Johnston
- Kristin Schneider

Art and Music The Scout @ FilmScene

From THE SCOUT (2026)

Iowa City! I do believe I was correct in understanding this wasn't against the rules of the subreddit, but if I'm wrong, please feel free to pull this down.

I just wanted to take a second to give a shout about a film I produced that's opening this weekend in Iowa City at FilmScene, which is THE SCOUT, written and directed by Paula Gonzalez-Nasser in her feature debut.

This is a VERY small movie (we made it with ten people in ten days) without much of a marketing budget, so I'm just trying to find a few ways to get the word out there about the movie to those who likely don't know it exists, and to support the FilmScene showings (as they've been very kind to allow us to screen there).

The film follows a day in the life of a NY television location scout as she photographs the homes and businesses across the city, stepping into their private lives while juggling the needs of her erratic employers. Paula worked as a location scout for many years in NY, and the film stems from that experience - if you like slice-of-life films, as it were, we think you'll like this one.

If you're curious about it you can read or listen to Paula talk about the film to The New York Times, on NPR, or on YouTube. The film is a New York Times Critic's Pick - hope you'll like the movie as well if you decide to check it out! Thanks for letting me drop word here.

I found this in a bunch of papers from an old house I cleaned out a few years ago, I had no relation to these people so I don’t need this stuff. Wondering if this is a family relic to anyone or just something a collector of such things would be interested in.

What is where the Hall Mall used to be?

Do all the shops just sit empty now? Is it something boring like U of I admin offices? Always been curious whats up there after the last couple businesses faded away. If memory serves a tattoo shop hung on there for quite some time but to my knowledge it finally left years ago.

Local Politics Battle lines shift in House races as Republicans retreat from front-line districts

From the article:
“The Congressional Leadership Fund is no longer spending on advertising in Iowa’s 1st District, where three-term Republican Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks is defending her seat against Democrat Christina Bohannan.

Bohannan is running for her third time against Miller-Meeks. Last time, the race was decided by only 799 votes, making it the second-closest in the country. It’s an eastern Iowa district where congressional cuts to Medicaid have been linked to hospital service closures and high diesel prices have been a challenge for farmers.”

Does this mean the GOP believes that the 1st is a lost cause?

Iowa City EMS

Hi y'all I'm looking to move to Iowa City possibly and was wondering what their EMS system is like. If anyone has insight it'd be greatly appreciated.

Are they dual role with FD?

Do they staff medic/ medic or basic/medic?

What's the pay vs cost of living for Iowa City?

Any place that does solely 911 or interfacility?

Thank you so much for your time!

Any recommendations for a guitar tutor in Iowa city/coralville? I relearning the instrument using Justin’s guitar but I feel like I’ll be better off if I have a schedule and an in person tutor.

Thanks in advance.

Rust Repair

I need to get some rust fixed on my car. Anyone with experience using either Harv's Body Shop or Outlaw Auto Conditioning? I have competing bids and wondered if anyone has had experience with either of them. Prices look to be pretty similar.

Thanks!
