My cats do not hunt. They see a bug walk by and couldnt care less. They look at the hummingbirds at the feeder at the window and and then go back to sleep. Eventually, they do.
Well, playing with a laser kinda sucks for the cat. There is zero sense of actually catching it. Playing with a toy on a string is better as they actually feel like they catch something.
If you insist on playing with the laser you can try giving them treats when they “catch” the dot.
She won't do that. We can get about a minute engagement with the cat dancer then she's bored, and she ignore any other cat fishing rod. I do put a treat out and laser her to a treat when she's slowing down though. We kind of wonder if she has bad eyesight because she has jump anxiety too.
Out of curiosity, how have you played with the toys on strings? If you just wave it around for her to bat at, it’ll become boring pretty quickly. I have generally dragged the toys all over the room (sometimes through multiple rooms), over and around furniture, to make catching it a real challenge. This does tire him out very quickly, so he doesn’t play long, but he really enjoys it. Early on I would have to stop because he would try to play way past the point of gasping for air.
I also have a toy on a bungee cord that is tied up high so he can grab it and it flies away when he lets go and bounces around unpredictably. I had to get a spool of bungee cord because he likes chewing through it, but he really enjoys it.
Yeah, I've dragged toys. Bonus for her, her complete lack of prey drive means we let her outside on nice warm days. She is uninterested in the cold days, just wants to lay in the sun. She does have territorial drive though and chases other cats out of the yard.
We had a fly infestation for a month before she noticed and only watches spiders. Birds all over the sunflowers and never cast a glance.
You'd have to do it every day, whether they engage or not.
It was about two months of just sitting there flicking a string like an ass while my cat ignores me, but now she loves it. Your cat watching it move counts as low level play, it's like stalking prey and it gets the predator drive going.
Imagine someone tells you catch this fast moving thing on the floor and when you do you realise it's actually made of light and you can't actually catch it. I too would stop playing.
we had a cat that would leave for 5 days at a time and only come home after hed killed something... you could tell cause hed be all proud and walking around like he was the coolest cat ever
one time he came home with a fist sized chunk missing out of his butt... yikes.
I promise he killed multiple somethings in 5 days. A coyote prob got after him. Cats have an extremely high kill rate. Higher than apex cats like tigers/lions/cougars. It’s impressive. The little cats are successful 30-70% of the time while apex kill rates are about 25%. I have a cat I let outside. He gets notably depressed if he can’t go out. He’s getting old so he mainly stays in the yard (and largely on the deck) but he still brings a squirrel to me occasionally. He’s a cat and deserves to be a cat.
yeah, our cat would meow NON STOP until you just let him outside. his will was stronger than ours by lifetimes! I can only hear 'meow meow meow meow meow meow meow meow meow' every 2 seconds for about 45 minutes before I just let him out lol
Mine does too but sometimes we are traveling for work and in a hotel. I try to stay at Airbnbs with outdoor access. He cries and won’t eat for days if he can’t get out. His sister is content in the house but wants out every now and again. I have a cat door at my house.
