A recent issue in this sub - please read

3.0k Upvotes

Hey there,

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

There's something I've noticed recently in the sub that I'd like to raise.

I've been moderating on Reddit for about 18 years, and I've been involved with this community for the last seven. Throughout that time, this sub has always been a particularly lovely place to be. The kindness, helpfulness, and good humour of its members have always stood out, and from a moderation perspective, it's been a genuine pleasure to be part of.

Unfortunately, I've noticed a significant increase in unkind and aggressive behaviour here recently. I don't know what's behind the change, or why it's happening here now, but it's something I'd really like us to address before it becomes a bigger problem.

Please:

If you come across a comment that's aggressive, hostile, or unnecessarily unkind — whether it's directed at you or someone else — please resist the temptation to engage. Instead, just hit the Report button and move on.

We'll take care of addressing the behaviour and, where necessary, will remove accounts who seem to need to create unpleasantness for people around them.

r/houseplants has always been a welcoming and supportive community, and I'd very much like to keep it that way. The overwhelming majority of you already contribute to that simply by being thoughtful and decent towards one another.

Thanks for helping us look after this little corner of Reddit. It's appreciated.

PS moderator applications are open, and some additional hands would be helpful rn. We are looking for people with an active history here and significant Reddit-moderation experience.

Some of these plants doubled their sizes over this past grow season. Anyone else frantically trying to bring all their plants inside before the weather changes? I’m both incredibly proud of all the growth and befuddled at how to work them back into the house. Like.. there’s no way everything will fit.

March 2025

Newly moved into a combined rental house with my girlfriend, she brought me a fancy comfy chair to start what at that time was our combined "study" whitch became a listen space and make up room

June 2025

I purchased my first record player. Allready had a little head start on the record collection thanks to a local independent metal record store

October 2025

Added some new additions to furniture. Some for storage some to improve listening experience. The first plants where stolen from the rest of the house

June 2026

We ditched the spare bedroom and turned that into my now finance study. I reconfigured furniture and added more plants. Record collection has grown by a decent amount. Now a dedicated listening room. A few ornamental additions

October 26

More plants added from plants i propagated last spring. Record collection grown by a healthy amount.

I’m just not sure what it is 😅

I think it’s a pothos but I’m not quite sure as I got it from a friend. I finally “got” how to not kill my plants though! I’ve had her for not quite a year and she’s just my favorite 😍

Help Will my monsterras get enough light here?

Thumbnail

Might be a silly question! will my monsterras get enough light in the corner between the wall and the white buffet table. sorry i am new to plant ownership and only recently moved in so it’s very bare right now.

There is a porch outside with a plastic film roof which dims the sun a bit.

I currently have two monsterras and i want to put them somewhere that they can be seen. they are currently in front of a glass window facing outside as there is no space in my living area where they can sit with the sun directly hitting them while making my room look nice.

i would like to put them in this corner but there is no sun directly hitting it during the day. i have windows on the opposite end of the room that face this corner though. the room is around 9-10 metres long though so im not sure if the light travels enough. the room is bright but not sure if its plant bright or just me bright. the window next to them gets the sunset so the direct light hits them for around 2 hours currently. because its a corner it doesn’t really receive any of that direct sunlight.

I would love to be able to admire them and have them look nicer- right now they make my dining area look quite cluttered and unorganised. behind the dining table is my kitchen island so they cannot be there.

i’m just worried they won’t get enough light in this corner. do i need a grow light here? ideally they won’t need a grow light but if i need one that’s okay. im on a budget as i just bought the house and am focusing on my mortgage for a while so im pretty limited.

Haul New haul from a friend

Super psyched for this new haul from a legit plant friend. A few months ago she had a work trip planned to my city and started prepping this, super grateful for both her generosity and plant skills!

- Anthurium seedlings (edit: crystallinum x papi hybrid), probably the most exciting after seeing all the gorgeous ones on here, and will also be extra fun raising from so small
- A deliciously bushy and evidently effective ping
- Some mixed bunches of maranta and philo
- A gorgeously healthy calathea white fusion prop, hoping I can keep this tricky one doing ok next to my other calathea

Now to find room for this influx after I told myself I wouldn’t increase my plant population…

Discussion Grow lights, what works for you and what is considered too much? Feeling overwhelmed at all the options

• Upvotes

Heya

I've been slowly getting into houseplants and I love it. With winter coming up, I'd like to get some extra lights for my plants to help them stay healthy and thriving. Currently I have like 8 zz plants, a succulent, and I'm propagating a jade plant. I'm also growing out a little tree to turn into a nice bonsai. Down the line, I'd like to get more succulents, and plants such as the dwarf jade for bonsai purposes (I'm not limiting myself to just the dwarf jade, I have a few plants/trees in my sights). I'd also like to grow some tomatoes or other veggies.

I've been doing tons of research into grow lights and all the different options, PPFD, efficiency, etc. and I've reached a point of decision paralysis lol.

What I care about:

  • I'm on a low budget - up to +- 80 euros is my maximum budget, but I'd like to be closer to the 50-60 euro range.
  • I don't want additional cooling elements for my lights. They shouldn't get too hot (and this should help with the longevity of the lights)
  • I don't care if they are too bright or ugly. I'd like to have a built-in dimmer, so that I can adjust the light intensity based on my needs.
  • I want my (current and future) succulents to thrive.
  • I want to grow some plants that have higher light needs, like certain carnivorous plants.
  • Warranty and reliability

Here are the options that I've looked at and what I think about them:

  • Sansi bulbs: I've seen them mentioned frequently, but I'm not convinced. I've heard that they have a high failure rate, and I don't want to constantly deal with shipping and re-shipping (wasteful emissions). I live in the EU, and one 36w bulb costs $53, which is too expensive compared to the alternatives. I'd also need to probably get multiple of them. I like that I can mount them in a standard light fixture - that's nice and versatile.
  • t5/t8 Barrina-esque lights: Too expensive, too little power, especially for succulents. Not the best PPFD values (and they're hard to find). Barrina isn't available in the EU as far as I've seen.
  • various Amazon lights: I'm trying to avoid amazon, because I don't want to support their shitty practices with my money.
  • Generic full spectrum LED: It's tough to get a proper PPFD value reading for these. They might be sufficient for some plants that don't need a lot of light.

The lights that I'm considering:

  • Mars hydro ts1000
  • Spider farmer sf1000
  • Viparspectra p1000

All 3 are fairly similar in price and specs, they all have dimmers and are full spectrum + IR diodes. The mars hydro is the cheapest where I live, and it uses 150W, so that's what I'm leaning towards. This sort of light sets me up for my future endeavors, but I worry if it might be overkill? I am in the process of acquiring additional plants and building a whole rack/cabinet for them, and the light seems like a decent starting spot, especially since my place does not get a lot of light + winter is coming.

What are your experiences with grow lights?

Thanks!

Discussion Plants and Grief

Serious discussion, I’m currently 100 percent a 24/7 full time care giver for the only true mother figure in my life… my great grandmother.

She got diagnosed with AML in July and it’s been a journey since then and I have never left her side. She got me into house plants and has shaped my love for them.

The thing is, I feel like I will be a “memory hoarder”.

Have any of you guys have turned to plants for grieving? Did you choose to let it consume your space and life? What plants do you recommend, and has anyone had a similar experience?

I’m sure a therapist is needed ofc, but as far as the house plant realm goes, how have you found it healing during the grieving process?

I just can't work out if it's over watering, under watering, or something else.

It's been fine for 3 or 4 years, with the occasional brown stem/leaf. But it's really declined quickly in the last few months...

Help What are these dark seen spots ?

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

Hi guys! I unfortunately don’t remember the name of the plant anymore. When I first bought it the leaves were of pale green colour with cute pink spots and that’s how it’s been growing since however today Ive noticed these darker green spots not only on old leaves but also on new tiny ones and on ones that are still unraveling.

I was thinking of repotting the plant to bigger pot but wasn’t sure if it’s ok to do in this season. (I live in Austria and cold fall days just begun)

I cannot find any find of any pests and to me the plant looks very healthy ? (Except one yellowing leaf lol)
Are these spots normal ?

Fourth picture is with no dark green spots and I think it’s one of the first that grew after I came home with the plant :)
I also added pictures of the whole plant just in case it’s important.
And no this is not it’s permanent spot I just put it there to take better pictures and to water :)

I’m pretty new in this so I’m sorry if this is stupid concern and thank you in advance :)

EDIT:
Sorry for the mess around lol
