Engagement proposal

Hi everyone,

I am planning on proposing to my girlfriend this weekend. I am looking at three options for private sunset proposal - Kawaikui Beach Park, Kawela Bay, and Ke Iki Beach.

Which location should I do? I def want something/somewhere beautiful given I have also hired a photographer. I looked at pictures of Kawaikui online and while it doesnt seem busy and offers some level of privacy, it doesnt seem to be the most beautiful place.

Additionally, we have a dinner res at Hua Tree in the evening following the proposal, which I can push back if needed).

Thanks in advance!

Holy Grail skincare from Donki?

Visiting my sisters this week and would like to bring back some skincare finds for us to have a "spa night" when we're together! They love the products at Don Quixote, and I'd like to bring back some unique and different ones that might be otherwise tough to get on the mainland! Does anything come to mind? mahalo!

question Housing resources?

I have a friend who manages a cafe in Waikiki. He has a job for me but I need to figure out a place to live on my own. Wondering about the best resources for finding a room to rent?

Expert Gift Givers: would love your ideas!

Hi, former local girl here. We're heading to Honolulu for 2 days at the end of this month. I'm hoping to get some Hawaii-themed Christmas gifts to bring back to the Mainland, but I'm out of ideas.

I'm looking for gifts:

  1. I can pick up in/near Ala Moana or at Costco since we're super short on time
  2. $15-$60 price range
  3. not the typical gifts like mac nuts, coffee beans, Crazy Shirts tees, ABC Store stuff, shortbread cookies (have done those so many times)
  4. bonus: $3-$5 non-tacky stocking stuffers (can I even find non-tacky things in this range?).

Open to all kinds of ideas--specialty food items (balsamic vinegar?), skincare, clothes/accessories, home decor, stationary, etc.

Thank you in advance for your kokua!

Rehoming my father’s cat

UPDATE: Kitty has found a home - thanks to everyone who expressed interest or tried to help. 🩷

Hi everyone! I’m here visiting my elderly father who was just placed in a care home.

He has a very sweet, friendly tortoiseshell cat (female) who urgently needs a home. I’m taking care of her the next few days, but unfortunately I’m flying out on Tuesday night and there will be no one to care for her afterwards.

I’ve tried contacting several shelters but they’re either full or not scheduling intake appointments until January.

does anyone have any suggestions? Anyone interested in this sweet baby? Please comment or DM me.

I’m willing to purchase food/litter & box/supplies to get you started. I don’t think she has received regular vet care due to my father’s condition. Unsure of age.

Park Dedication Fee for house on CPR Lot?

I own a small (700 sqft) house on a CPR lot with a total of 4 properties in the Makiki area.

I have applied for a permit to add some additional square footage (~300 sqft) to my home (no separate entrance, still meant just for me and my family's use).

I was just informed that there is a ~$30k park dedication fee associated with the permitting process. Typically this is meant for multi family units or adding extra units to a lot, but it sounds like the CPR (multiple single family homes on one shared lot) complicates things.

Has anyone had experience navigating this process, either appealing the park dedication fee or working with a real estate attorney or CPR attorney for this kind of problem? The fee is large enough to put the whole project in question.

Questionable living circumstances in apartment managed under property management group

I know there are worse circumstances to live in, but considering we pay $2,000 a month to live there, I’m beginning to feel that this might warrant a complaint to an entity that could make impact (if that exists).

Our building had two skylights in it, both have blown out in the past two months from the tropical storm winds, and a board has been used to cover it up.

Any time there is strong rain, water comes through into the hallway and since it is an enclosed building, it reeks of mold as you are coming and going.

It’s starting to feel like we are being managed by a slumlord, when we moved in years ago, the owner of the building was still alive and took care of things. My neighbors have even gone out in the hall to scrub things down, trying to make the situation better - but that shouldn’t be our responsibility.

Does anyone have recommendations on what to do?

anyone doing remote work from Honolulu long-term?

I run a small SaaS business from the East Coast and have been thinking about spending a month or two in Honolulu to work remotely. Not a vacation thing, more like actually getting work done somewhere that isn't Jersey. My wife's job is flexible on location so we could make it work logistically.

What I'm wondering is whether the remote work setup is actually decent there. Reliable internet for video calls, coworking spaces that aren't just hotel lobbies, coffee shops where you can sit for a few hours without getting side eye from the staff. I've heard mixed things about cost of living and how locals feel about more remote workers coming in. Not trying to be that person who moves somewhere and makes things worse for everyone. The timezone difference could actually work in my favor with my customers but that's a separate issue.

question Anyone able to get estrogen prescription refills?

I’m a woman of a certain age. My doctor has prescribed estrogen patches and cream. Normally I get my prescriptions filled at Costco, but they are out of stock on both. I’ve been calling random pharmacies, looking for one that has either prescription in stock. Has anybody gotten these prescriptions filled recently? If so, where?

Rehab Classes at Waiawa: People Are Waiting Months Just to Change

Thumbnail

I've witnessed firsthand how the system at Waiawa Correctional Facility leaves motivated people stuck in limbo. Individuals who genuinely want to rehabilitate themselves can't access the programs they need—missing an enrollment window means waiting 3-6 months for another chance. Rehabilitation 2.0 and 2.5 classes have so few seats that even the most committed people find themselves trapped.

I started a petition asking the Department of Public Safety to expand these rehabilitation programs at Waiawa. When there aren't enough classes for people who are ready to change, we're not just delaying their progress—we're keeping them from reuniting with their families and contributing to society. These programs exist for a reason, and they work. They just need more capacity.

If you've seen how the system impacts people you care about, or if you think everyone deserves a real chance to improve themselves—consider signing and sharing. What would you want someone to do if this was your family waiting months for help?

Wedding Photographer

My wife and I got married earlier in the year, at the courthouse, and planned on taking the photos later on the beach. Later has arrived we are in need of a wedding photographer, does anyone have a recommendation or want to self-recommend?

We have one challenge, but I would like to address it privately. It's nothing too crazy, but it might be a deal breaker for some professional photographers.

Anyways, if anyone is interested or has a recommendation, please DM me your information. I would prefer if you had some kind of online website or at least can provide a basic portfolio of prior work. Please also specify your rate for the job, will likely be around two hours total, because we want to do shoot in two different outfits—one traditional, one whimsical. Mahalo in advance.

question My daughter is finally old enough to fully experience Halloween. Where is a good place for her to trick-or-treat door to door?

My daughter is now 3 so she can comprehend what Halloween is all about and can finally trick or treat.

I'm born and raised kalihi side but I'm 35 now. I haven't trick or treated for like 20 years. I feel like plenty areas changed by now. Where should I take her that she can be safe but also get lots of candy?

Last few Halloweens we've just been hosting and giving away candy/toys at our house.

question Traveling healthcare

Hello! There’s a non 0 chance I could be arriving in Honolulu to work at one of the hospitals for 3 months. One thing I am aware of is that outsiders generally suck when they come to Hawaii so I wanted to hear from some locals about how to be respectful and not ruin everything lol

I think most of them have been demolished at this point, but I was wondering if anyone knows of any left standing. Don't have to be functional. I was interested in taking some photos to document them before they're completely extinct.
