Mod Announcement Owning A Hedgehog Reality Check

Since hedgehog owners consistently buy hedgehogs without setting reasonable expectations here are some expectations to set. Adapted/expanded from u/ArcadeRivalry's post.

  • Don't believe social media. Every single one I see there are obviously ridiculously posed pictures, maybe it's just me but I refuse to believe one could stay still for that long.
  • Hedgehog are spiked covered prey animals prone to anxiety. While belly rub/cuddle posts get a lot of attention they are the exception due to good breeding/luck not the rule. It is very possible a hedgehog will never be comfortable being handled even after concerted effort.
  • If you want to bond you need to put in a lot of commitment, patience and time to socialize them. I've seen a lot of people in groups I'm in need to re-home a hog before the first year as they can't put the time in. You need at least an hour a day socializing but realistically a lot more for them to be comfortable around you and others. We recommend getting a snuggle sack or putting them in your hoodie pouch to spend time together.
  • You need a specialist vet. A lot of places might not have an exotic animal vet near you. This is vital. So make sure you have to this.
  • It may not be legal to own hedgehogs in your area.
  • You need heating to ensure they don't hibernate.
  • You will likely be spiked, bitten and pooped on. It can be really really disheartening being spiked, hissed at or even bitten when you feel like you've made progress. Huffing and popping are natural, they are scaredy little animals.
  • Hedgehogs salivate frothily on themselves when they like scents, males often have "boy time", they poop a lot, have terrible sight and will bite things that smell yummy/interesting, and require consistent cage cleanings.
  • They are carnivores, while feeding fruits/vegetables can often be done safely, please feed them mainly meat-based foods ( cat food, insects, etc.)
  • Since they have very limited vision they operate mainly on smell and are at risk of falling/walking off elevated areas. It is wise to assume they are making decisions based on what they smell rather than just mainly what they see. They will still try to climb and are prone to hurting themselves climbing horizontal cage bars.
  • It is very likely they will dislike baths and nail trimming. We recommend trimming nails during foot bath time when they can't curl up or just holes in a towel to put their legs through.
  • Hedgehogs should not be housed together. High likelihood of fighting or babies.
  • We recommend heavy water bowls or chicken nipple bottles as ball water bottles can hurt them.

If you know what you are getting into, they are the most wonderful creatures ever and bring many people on this sub joy. If you feel like your hedgehog "hates" you they are just being their grumpy/terrified selves! You may be lucky and form a close bond.

After refusing to be near me for about a month, I feel like Snowball has accepted me. However, he now identifies as a bracelet.

I swear, anytime I pick him up, he ends up coming to my wrist and just staying like this

Discussion Hedgehog and Friends alternative??

Post image
• Upvotes

So... my family ruined my birthday surprise of getting a new hedgie! I finally feel at a point where I'm okay with getting one again after our previous hedge passed from WHS. I supported the company Hedgehog and Friends since we really liked their products. What are people using for their hedgies? I'm stoked to have another little buddy to add to the family.

Answered Question Surprise Hedgehog? UPDATE

Thankyou all so much for your suggestions! I still haven't had the chance to get new stuff for the enclosure, but I did my best with what I have around.

I somehow didn't see that the tank had a strip thermometer on it, and so I can verify that the enclosure is warm enough. somewhere between 75-78 degrees F.

I moved the enclosure to my desk to make it easier to reach and clean. It's definitely not ideal as it's right next to my cintiq which can get bright (hence the scarf I taped to the side) and it doesn't get as much sun as the dresser. I'll get a properly sized enclosure asap.

I swapped the pine paper bedding with some towels (not fleece, but I'll try to find some) and used an old medical supply container as a temporary litter box. They keep flipping it, but its the best I've got. I have to reset the enclosure each morning because they love to redecorate and nothing I have is heavy enough to keep the litter from getting scattered. I kept the box just because they need some kind of hide, but I want to replace it asap as I'm worried about bacteria.

Removing the previous litter was scary for her, but I think it helped them get used to me and they soon started calming down back quickly whenever I moved and scared them. They won't let me pet them just yet, but they'll sniff and lick my hand/fingers if I'm still enough. I also got bit a couple times but not hard enough to draw blood. I think they just smelled lunch on my fingers and got curious/hungry.

The hedgehog came with some scabs and have been scratching their sides and belly a lot, so as soon as they're comfortable letting me pick them up, I'll give them an oat bath like some people suggested.

My #1 priority is the CHE with a thermometer that connects to it, to make sure the temperature stays stable, a running wheel because they're woefully understimulated (all I had to provide was a bisected paper towel roll which they've already pressed flat) new hides, a heavier litter tray, fleece bedding, and a bigger enclosure once I can afford it.

I'm unemployed and can't really keep a full time job, mostly for medical reasons, so I have to rely on my parents for the hedgie's supplies and stuff, (which I suppose is warranted since I didn't expect a pet) but I've made decent money through art commissions this year so hopefully I can start that back up again and make more. I hate asking for people to buy me stuff.

I'm fairly certain they're a girl, but haven't been able to thoroughly check. Currently, my favorite potential names are Winnie, Tibby, and Honey. Any other names are welcome. They're easily startled still but are very curious and brave once the initial panic has worn off, kind of rambunctious and opinionated, and I really hope to get to know her more!

Again, Thankyou everyone for your input, suggestions, resources, and encouragement. Even more would be greatly appreciated! I was so sure that I was going to fail at this and be a terrible owner, but I feel a little more confident and determined now. I just need to do what I can to improve their conditions whenever I can. I can do this!

Question Surprise hedgehog?

Thumbnail gallery
91 Upvotes

As a late birthday present my Dad got me a pet hedgehog. I'm grateful for the gift but also terrified because I was in no way prepared for the responsibility of caring for a hedgehog but I have one now so I want to do the best job I possibly can. I've done some research but wanted to ask if there's anything I'm missing

I wasn't given any supplies, so after obtaining the hedgehog I immediately insisted we go to the pet store and get some. We were in a hurry to get the little guy (unsure of what gender, haven't picked them up since I know they can get startled easy and want to let them acclimate to the new environment) out of the cardboard box he was transferred in and into something better. We bought paper bedding and a low-fat high protein cat food. Plus two ceramic bowls since I read that hamster water bottles are no good.

Once we got home, We rinsed out an old fish tank (too small, only about 2-2.5 feet long) and put everything in plus filled the bowls with food and water. My Dad cut a doorway into the cardboard box so they could have a hideaway. We set them in and they've been exploring, sniffing, and running around. They only puff up or jolt when I get too close or move things. We laid a scarf over the top of the tank cause my Dad figured they wouldn't want the bright light, but I removed it later as I read it could throw off their internal clock.

They were active this evening but now that it's fully night they've gone mostly quiet. I've read that's normal but want to be sure. They keep knocking the "house" and bowls over even as I've tried to bury them in the bedding. I'm not happy with the setup as is but I don't know how to really improve it. Currently, my only plan is to get a bigger enclosure, a better hide and a second one as well, a wheel, maybe separate the bedding/ a litter box? I'll try potty training them since I heard that's possible and hopefully it'll work out. If not, so it goes. Overall, I'm unsure and would love some suggestions, preferably low cost furnishings since I can't work and would have to ask my family to buy things. DIY is welcome since I like to craft.

Everything I read says I should feed them live insects. It's the last thing I want to do, since I'm scared of bugs, but if it's absolutely necessary I will do my best to get over it. But if there's a decent alternative to live insects that won't cause health issues or anything, do let me know. I'm really nervous about taking care of this guy, and I think it was crazy to spring the responsibility on me as a surprise, but I still want to take good care of them. Please share enclosure pieces, schedules, tips, guides, whatever. I'm flailing here.

Medical/Health (see a vet) Hedgy rolled up in a ball and rolling out

Hi!

My hedgehog is 4-5 years old (I adopted her so don't know for sure). She's been recently diagnosed with oral cancer.

I've been giving her wet food and medicine to make her life a bit less painful because in her case there was nothing else we could do.

As I was about to wake her up to give her her medicine I realized that she was not reacting to my movements so when I checked on her I discovered that she was rolled up in a ball and she is still breathing and alive(I can see her body moving) but she's just not rolling out of it.

I know that she maybe just got cold so I wrapped some bottles with warm water in towels and created a little warm chamber for her, but might she be dying? What else can I do?

UPDATE: sorry for not updating for such a long time. It tooks 2 stressful hours but she did wake up! At first I was concerned about her eating less than usual but everything is back to normal now, so I guess she just was a bit confused right after waking up from that state. She is all good now, well as much as one can be while having cancer... But this situation really put me off which is kind of silly because well she is obviously not going to get any better and eventually she just won't wake up one day and I know it, but I still got so scared.

Question Take hedgehog out of hide to bond or leave her inside? & name suggestions?

Post image
67 Upvotes

Hi!! I recently adopted a 4 y/o female hedgehog who was super friendly when I picked her up from the previous owners, but has stayed in one of her hides 24/7 since I brought her home a few days ago. She only comes out to eat, drink, and use the bathroom. For bonding, I was wondering if I should just take her whole hide out to do so, or if I should get her out of the hide so she can get used to being handled directly by me. I don’t want to scare or overwhelm her, but I want her to get used to being handled by me as well. Any advice is appreciated!

I also haven’t decided on her name yet, she came with the name Rosie but I’m not in love with that. Some of my ideas are Fauna, Meadow, Peach/Peaches, Clementine, Toffee, and a few others but I‘m open to more suggestions!

Question Hedgehog Distress Noise

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hedgehog making what sounds to be a distress call while sleeping. He made a few about 3 min apart but was dead asleep. I went and woke him (which is how I know he was out coldddd) to put him in his pen to observe him.

Since being awake he’s moving normal, eating, and no longer making any of those noises (or any odd noises)

He has had quite a complex health run the past few months post June surgery, so I’m always worried and on the lookout for any pain/distress. He’s not moving any differently than normal, and he is on metacam as a precaution for lasting impacts from surgery

Does this sound like he was having a really intense dream? Could he be distressed in his sleep and not while awake?

So happy Piper has gotten so comfortable with me she climbed up onto my shoulder and fell asleep. 2nd pic is her waking up due to my movement. She is such a chill girl, it's unbelievable. I do have to stop her from first trying to bite my hair by holding it away from her, but then she goes to sleep. I'm currently keeping her away from our dog, as she's the threat, since she won't stop biting his fur and latching on to him lol.
