Epic Games' new store is fully vibe-coded, and they're so proud of it they're taking shots at Steam

Doesn't vibe coding mean they used prompts to make ai code the whole thing? Why are they proud of that everytime I open epic to there always some werid bug, what happens most of the time is my store changes from English to some random language

The owner loves ai and hates that steam makes devs divulge the use of Ai in their games

Not only that but vibe coding means not all code is hand-treated, or human-treated.  So if the AI accidentally gives away your account details, it’s possible no human at the company would know.  Mistakes could be everywhere.

Dam i didnt know that

But it loads a few seconds faster then steam.

Bro's launcher is learning a new language every time he opens it and Epic is bragging about AI

If you're talking to investors they like the potential for velocity. You can vibe out a ton of features in a short time with minimal paid dev hours.

If you let it run completely unsupervised you'll get a mess, but it can work if it's monitored. I've been treating AI like our contractors, applying an appropriate amount of scrutiny, and it's still faster for a lot of tasks.

 appropriate amount of scrutiny

This is what separates vibe coding from using it as a coding tool.

But with Epic it's highly skilled artisanal prompt artists that do the vibe coding, you see. That's totally different from the usual sloppy garbage everyone else creates.

Isn't there also the risk of being completely fucked if there is a coding error? I'm certain I've already read of articles of companies being able to unfuck an Ai-produced error because the human engineers had absolutely no idea how to read what was written.

Just needs to be pointed out that the humans that built Epic Launcher didn't do any better

Yes. For some reason he thinks this is a good thing.

Apparently he made them restart coding for this Marvel game saying they had to do it all with AI and no manual coding. People are talking about avoiding Unreal because they're afraid it will be vibecoded nonsense.

Everybody use AI to code now. Steam does too. Reddit does. You are using AI code if right now as you read this.

Cuz ai is the future the earlier the prouder

Being proud of getting someone to do something for you because you don’t know how to do it is not a flex. It’s an admission of failure.

Too late, I've already instructed Claude to depict you as the soyjak and me as the chad.

We're both pregnant for some reason but I still win.

Vibe coding does indeed partially mean AI wrote the code, but AI writing the code does not automatically mean vibe coding.

2

u/L1f3trip 8h ago

How so ? Vibe coding is asking the AI for a result and waiting for the AI to build it then asking for a correction and waiting to see then applied.

Vibe coding is indeed the AI that wrote the code.

You do realise that experienced senior engineers use AI to write their code? And what we do is not even remotely related to vibe coding.

I didn't claim vibe coding doesn't mean AI wrote the code, but there is more context to the definition.

2

u/L1f3trip 8h ago

Enlighten me, what context shows that the definition goes beyond that ?

What is your definition of vibe coding ?

-2

u/Jebble 8h ago

Vibe coding is done by people who have no idea how engineering works and open AI, say "Built me a <insert app description>, don't make mistakes". Look at the result and follow up with "on the X and y,it should be doing z, please fix".

That is not how software engineers utilise AI tools.

2

u/L1f3trip 8h ago

Fair enough, I guess i misread your first comment, we’re on the same page about the definition.

The real question is which one Epic is doing, and given the bugs people are reporting, it’s hard to tell from the outside but I'm guessing their software engineer might be doing a little more than using AI as tools.

This is a thing a lot of people don't understand.

AI is fine for writing code IF people actually review it and understand what it's doing. Its able to skip the actual writing (more accurately, typing) of code which can take a lot of time, so it can get reviewed and optimized by actual people who know what they're doing.

Compared to vibe coding which is basically "make me this" then "okay, now make it able to do this" until they get what they want with little to no knowledge of what its actually doing.

But a lot of gamers say things like "just do X" and "why don't they do Y?" Assuming they're simple and easy to do without having a clue what they're talking about

u/ArelMCII 6h ago

Just using AI isn't vibe-coding. Vibe-coding is telling an AI what the program should do and then the AI generating the code on its own. Usually, whatever the AI outputs isn't scrutinized either, for one reason or another. (Boss wants it done quick and doesn't care about quality, the one doing the prompt not knowing how to code, stuff like that.)

u/AliceCode 8h ago

You do realize that there have been times in history where people have been collectively wrong? Just because "senior" engineers are using AI doesn't mean it's not still vibe coding. I'm seen the code that these "senior" engineers produce with "AI assistance". It's trash. They are vibe coders that don't want to admit that they are vibe coding.

3

u/hearke 7h ago

As a senior dev, yes, it sucks ass and it's such a pain to review. No rhyme or reason, fat-ass PRs touching a bajillion things at once, and it turns people's brains into mush.

u/Jebble 6h ago

Don't blame the tool, blame your inability to architect and specify.

2

u/L1f3trip 5h ago

I hear that so many times about AI. Somehow, every public example of using AI in a public faced product has made it go to shit.

There is only 2 possibilities, either you go over everything it produces (which makes it kind of useless to brag about it's capabilities) or what you make with it is shit.

I can't prove number 2 so I have to go with my experience and assume you go over everything and you are happy with the time you save even if it means reviewing code for most of your time.

1

u/hearke 4h ago

Oh, I never use it, I'm just complaining about others. I'm happy to accept those criticisms of them ahaha.

I will say though, it puzzles me that people insist on referring to AI as a tool. It's not a tool, it's a service. Tools typically aren't pay per use.

.. Your point still applies, of course, I'm just being pedantic.

-1

u/Jebble 8h ago

Sure, you have seen all the code in the world. You're delusional if you think there aren't engineering teams out there producing extremely well functioning, well tested systems and you're even more delusional if you think AI with the right guard rails doesn't write better code than humans do, which it does in fact do. Its also never going away so yeh.

We are not vibe coders, you simply have no understanding of the industry.

0

u/AliceCode 7h ago

I've seen "the best" that LLMs have to offer. Literally every time I've had someone like you come along and claim that LLMs produce better code than human engineers, I've had them show me this "better code" and it has always been garbage. Every single time.

0

u/Jebble 7h ago

Yeh no you haven't. You are a single person in a world of millions engineers who will never interact with you. You're making baseless claims and are projecting like crazy.

2

u/AliceCode 7h ago

Show me the code then. Prove it to me.

1

u/Jebble 7h ago

I can't show you our codebase, I'd be in breach of contract. But if you remotely know anything about software engineering you would already know that you're wrong, so it's quite simple really: You don't know what you're talking about.
