Help Twenty Years Hauling Freight, and I Still Can’t Stop Comparing Elite Runs to Real Loads

Twenty years of trucking and I still catch myself comparing Elite hauls to real loads. 500 tons of painite in a Type9? That's barely two overweight containers on my rig, but the credits scale like I'm moving diamonds by the kilo. Started wondering what the actual economics would look like if Frontier used real freight rates.

My last run from Delkar to LHS 20 netted 12 million for 30 minutes. Real world that'd be maybe two grand after fuel, permits, the weigh station hassle. The gap's wild. I started timing my loop like a real route though. Dock to dock, no shortcuts, counting the supercruise like highway miles. Turns out my hourly in Elite still crushes reality even at conservative numbers.

The restlessness kicks in though. Long hauls in game, long hauls for real, and both have that same dead zone between point A and B where your brain looks for problems to solve. At least in Elite the scenery changes. Orion Nebula beats Nebraska interstate at hour fourteen.

Anyone else come from actual logistics and find the economics broken in a fun way, or does it kill the immersion?

Misc It is nice that the Kill Warrant Scanner is being folded into standard ship systems, however I will miss my silly CG reward double engineered G5 long range/fast scan 0A Kill Warrant Scanner that barely any ship could reliably power because it takes up 4.8MW on its own.

They never gave another G5 0A after it to my knowledge, and swapped to 0C after which only takes 1.2MW(4.8MW) with a range of 4,950m(6,600m) and a scan time/angle of 10.5 degrees and 2 seconds.

It is a fun relic of the past and nothing more than a silly toy.

PSA PSA: make sure ALL perhipherals are connected and active before launching game.

FIRST AND FOREMOST: I am aware of the ability to create a save file and have a backup of the controls saved.

I've played elite for years, I love elite and wish no ill will on this game, the developers or anybody that enjoys space shanigans.

but ho-lee-shite.

let me lay out some context here- I play using mouse, keyboard, standard xbox game pad and a thrustmaster T16000.M (throttle and stick) - I have controls all over the place. I'll spare everyone the intricacies of said controls- they span across all of the aforementioned. from FSS, to SRV, to planetary probe scanning, on foot combat / exobiology, menu shuffling, ship control, fighter orders.. all of it.

I went to log in earlier this evening (I had just played the evening before, all was COMPLETELY fine), but there was something askew.. my xbox game pad was not plugged in when I launched the game. I did not realize this at the time because I typically only use the game pad for the SRV and current shenanigans do not dictate the use of the game pad or an SRV, so I did not have it in front of me or even realize the game pad wasn't plugged in at the time of game launch.

the PHUCKERY that ensued in the following hour whilst trying to figure out what the problem was and by the time I realized the game pad not being connected was the culprit, ultimately resulted in me fumbling up my save file and I will now have to go thru and remap all of my controls across the perhiphials I use to play elite. this will take a FAIR amount of time across many scenarios in which I will have to try and muscle memory the controls back in order.

I know the "fix" is make sure your devices are plugged in when launching the game.. but I do have to ask- why does it have to be like this? why can't the controls and safeguards to the set controls be preserved by default when the game updates or happens to load without a connected perhpheral? a WARNING that a controller is not connected at launch would have saved me from all of this.

I want to play, but I've spent so much time trying to monkey with this that i've thrown in the towel for tonight. I WILL go in this weekend and remap my controls and make a new save file.. but I wish there was a better remedy to a simple mishap.

TL;DR - wish the game warned of a missing controller on launch if one has custom mapped controls across multiple peripherals. I also wish the game by DEFAULT preserved saved controls without manipulating the game files.

had to rant about this. I do feel a bit better now. if you made it this far, I appreciate the time taken.

Something about this Class I gas giant just seems particularly appealing and beautiful so I thought I'd share it. 201.11 ems, an ice ring obviously (incl. Tritium hot spot) He content 26.18%. I think it is the contrast between the bright white waist/equatorial area and the soft brown nearer the poles, but it you enlarge you can see some more cool features. First there's the big storm which looks like an eye on the right, then the little curlicue storms in the middle, and also what looks like a triple overlapping storm group on the left, which probably is a storm at a lower cloud layer propagating up into two higher layers, or vice versa.

Hey all,

Been a long time ED player and always keep looking for a new ways to improve my setup. I have a second stick for hot-swap when doing some dogfighting but tbh, these days I'm a more of a "chilled gameplay loop" kind of guy!

Also play in VR when the mood strikes but only just got back to ED after a year break and want to get the muscle memory up to speed, that's why flat screen atm... Voice Attack and head tracking also set up.

Obviously, play with the light off in the room which gives +100 to immersion..

So yeah now, show me yours😅 and let me know what you think and if you have any suggestions for mine!

PS. what's on a screen is just a desktop background pic found online so credits to nameless CMDR!

Media FOSS appreciation post

Post image
75 Upvotes

Once again the FOSS community continues to amaze me. Here you can see Elite Dangerous (Odyssey) running flawlessly on a device that not only uses a completely different architecture but also an OS that is, frankly speaking, garbage for Gaming. I neither expected the game to launch on the first try, nor it running exceptionally well.

Seriously, this thing is running at 120+ FPS in space on Ultra settings at a reasonable 1920 x 1248 resolution. Although the performance tanks a bit when entering space stations (60-80fps for me). Drop the resolution and settings a bit more, limit the frame rate, and you have a really efficient and capable mobile ED station.

Man, FOSS devs are different breed.

More information for those interested:

Running on a MacBook Pro M3 Pro using Highball as Wine helper (vibe-coded, works well enough; use CrossOver instead IF you have it). Switch to D3DMetal (important! Fixes long loading times, improves performance and memory usage substantially).

Roleplaying Orbital facilities and stations

Post image

I love the planet side ports but gosh I wish we had some space elevators. Like massive teathered Stations with actual accommodations for fleet carriers to be remitted and repaired. Essentially 5 times the size of the orbitals, but laid out like the small stations, non rotation since its teathered.

Video All Hail the Imperial Clipper

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

To celebrate the announcement of the Imperial Clipper's upcoming buff, I present to you my greatest ever organic PvP encounter.

I had come to do some bounty hunting in a backwater system with some freshly engineered frags installed on my clipper 'Black Beauty'.

After collecting a handful of bounties, I was set upon by a rogue FDL who attempted to catch me with my metaphorical trousers about my ankles.

Ramming speed ahead.

I very much look forward to dusting off the old girl for a refit next week.

Builds Would a lasers only (engineered) corvette be viable for Hard PvE?

• Upvotes

Wanting to shake things up while I learn my Hotas. Would all lasers work for PvE content? If so what would be the best engineering to melt NPCs? Right now I'm flying a Conda with huge multis and a few beams not particularly well engineered, and I just feel like it takes forever to drop shields.

Discussion Can't Believe it....

Spent all day, so roughly 6 hours at a compromised beacon, made 45 million in bounties killed god knows how many mostly Elite and Deadly wanted bad guys and my Master combat rating in Inara only went up like 4%....
Please tell me that the 4% was my total combat rating towards Elite and not just 4% towards the Master rank.
Jeez.

Screenshot A spectacular escape

So there I was, already writing my ship's eulogy in my head. Hull on fire, alarms screaming, shields down and trying to recover while avoiding the ship's overheating, FSD charging slower than my internet during a thunderstorm. 0%... 12%... I was basically at peace with becoming space debris. Then, at the literal last second, the engine finishes charging and BOOM, I jump to the station like nothing ever happened. Saved myself a cool 33 million in rebuy and about 10 years off my lifespan from pure panic. CMDR retired today, legend tomorrow!

Misc Anaconda Mk II capacity math

For reference I'm reading the article here:

https://www.elitedangerous.com/news/elite-dangerous-october-dev-log-2026-law-disorder

750 tons is the claim. They also imply using an Optimized rack in the locked Class 6 slot.

So how is the math working out to 750 max?

  • Size 1 Internals: 1 = 2 tons
  • Size 2 Internals: 1 = 4 tons
  • Size 3 Internals: 1 = 8 tons
  • Size 4 Internals: 2 = 32 tons (unless using pre-engineered)
  • Size 5 Internals: 5 (2 Military)
  • Size 6 Internals: 1 (1 Cargo) = 64 (unless using Mk2 then 96 or Pre-engineered?)
  • Size 7 Internals: 2 = 256 tons (128 tons x2 assuming not using Mk 2 as they aren't clear on what is supported)
  • Size 8 Internals: 1 = 256 tons (again not clear if a Mk 2 will work)
  • Max Cargo: 750

If Mk 2 is at play in anything other than the Class 6 slot I can't figure out if only specific of them to hit 750 tons.

Hoping the smarter minds can math this out for me (or someone seeing it in the non-prod, hee hee).

EDIT: Actually I think it maths out if the locked Cargo slot is NOT mk 2 capable. No pre-engineered are use and the Class 8 or both Class 7s take the Mk 2 cargo racks.

Screenshot I'm Glad They Didn't Dethrown Corvette's Title as King of PVE

Post image

Photo taken yesterday admiring ny corvette along with my squadron carrier.

With the recent Conda MK2 announcement now we know that it's a multi role ship and is not going to take Corvette's position.

When we hear the name Federal Corvette there's some kind of respect towards that name a huge battleship a proof of dedication towards federation grind and getting one is like a satisfying achievement let alone fully engineering it.

If you ask me if is it necessary to release a new ship that will dethrown Corvette I think I'll be against about it this ship is very iconic design wise and its a symbol of huge battleship there's already a long standing brand around it. But if they desides to really add a new large ship stronger than Corvette's I just hope it will justify that change.

I got Elite: Dangerous in 2016. I hadn't played in some time, but a buddy of mine got me back in by encouraging me to join a hauling group.

I finally got around to grinding out the last bit of combat rank. (I have zero intention of grinding to level 5!) This got me my Triple Elite.

The Krait MkII was my combat vehicle of choice for a good long time. I remember being in open play and letting folks use the fighters.
I did a good chunk of the last bit in my Condor (Hornblower), but the very end with my Corvette (Katisha) for more melting power.

I wish I could see a timeline of when I got promoted for all of the categories.

Just wanted to brag.
Fly safe, CMDRs! o7

Help Caspian Explorer Outfitting Questions

I posted the question in daily questions, though I would elaborate more here.

I want to go on a extended exploration trip to Beagle Point, going counter clockwise around the galaxy, and make a circle/round shaped trip. I don't know if this is too ambitious, but I know for a fact that exploration is the one thing I enjoy doing in Elite Dangerous.

For the trip, I sold my Conda and Mandelay for a Caspian, and spent some ARX for the Nomad. The caspian is slightly engineered, with 68LY range and both Scarabs and Nomads. Here's the link to the Coriolis Builder https://sh.orbis.zone/1LQ8UudTEl

I'm not super familiar with Odyssey yet, so if there's any more things I can do, to either improve the ship's functions, or engineering that would increase the jump range, any advices are appriciated. Also, I would like to know how to aquire already engineered artemis suits, if that's a thing.
