Electric Fireplaces - Clearances - Top, To Mantle, etc

Hi,

I've been looking to replace a linear electric fireplace with one that has a better clerance requirement. The people we bought the house from have a Napolean Harsten 60 (I am 99% sure thats the model based on photos etc). It is a fully recessed installation.

According to my model's manual, we need 12'' clearance at the top.

It seems that other models (Napolean Entice, for example) need only 4'' of clearance to the top. The SimpliFlame Allusion Platinum needs like only 5/8'' or something but then also says 4'' to the ceiling. The table in the manual even more confusingly says Top: 0''.

I'm so confused by the fact that some models show a diagram of the clearance and seem to imply that I can have drywall directly above the fireplace unit itself, but there should be say 12'' of distance between the top front of the fireplace and the mantle. That part makes sense to me - the heat will be caught under the mantle if its shooting out the top front?

But I don't get what actual safe distance I have directly above most units. Like if I am recessing it... isn't the wood frame I'm mounting it to directly on top of the unit?

Would appreciate some input on this - I've heard people say that if you have like some photos on a recessed shelf 6'' above the recessed fireplaces (ie: if you have built a frame that like sticks out of the wall to house a fully recessed electric fireplace, recessed TV shelf, recessed shelf with pictures, art, etc) that its totally fine as long as its not like catching the heat coming out from the top front of the fireplace.

I've just found the wording, different diagrams, different tables, different videos etc to not paint a consistent picture of what the clearance requirements are for primarily the TOP of these fireplaces.

Can anyone help? I'm just trying to find a linear electric that is as 'slim' as possible in terms of height (most seem to be between 16'' and 20'' so i think thats prob the best i'm going to get) - but if the top clearance is like 12'' then its technically not 16'' to 20'' its technically like 28'' to 32''.

Thanks - just looking for some discussion on how the clearances should be read or what the difference is between "Top Clearance", "Clearance to Mantle / Ceiling" is - and how I can interpret these and what is actually safe, etc.

How to measure?

How would I accurately measure for an insert for this existing fire box? We are looking to find something that will slide right in without much modification (we will remove the chain curtains). I measured the fire box opening from inside to inside and got 36x18. It would also need to be a recessed unit to allow for the tapered back. Thanks for any help!

Simplifire 30 insert v Dimplex revillusion electric log set

Trying to figure out if I want to keep the Dimplex Revillusion log set or return it and get the simplifire 30. In the daytime I really hate the plastic piece that sits in the Dimplex log set. I don’t really notice it at night in dim/no light, and I do like the flame appearance on the Dimplex. But I’m wondering if it’s worth it to spend double the price of the Dimplex on the Simplifire. Due to the dimensions of my fireplace, the only insert that will fit is the Simplifire 30. I’m worried the Simplifire will look like a black tv screen when not in use. I’m also worried about the reflection and how that will affect the look of the fireplace when in/not in use. Y’all that have a Simplifire (basic insert, not the inception or any other fancy model), do you like it? Are you happy with it? Do you regret it? Those with a Dimplex log set- same questions.

I’ve attached a few photos of my set up now, with the Dimplex log set.

Please help! My return window on the Dimplex is one week.

Thank you!

PS- I don’t want to hear your opinion on my TV placement.

Looking at Options for Decorative electric fireplace in rental

im going t obe moving apartments soon.. having only lived 3 out of my 57 years on this earth without a wood fireplace, my obvious choixe would be to find a new place with wood fire.. but thats not ver yrealistic as many old buildings have failed chimneys.. so im looking at options I could use to electrify an existing decorative fireplace hearth.

most of the threads here are of people setting up freestanding complete mantle units or installing iserts in their old wood fireplaces...

I dont see much about actual just plain Logsets.. what im really looking for is something with a nice flicker and glow.. flames dont have to be realistic, just warm colors.. and HEAT.. but i dont want a fan forced space heater.. i would love tofind something thatactually produces Radiant heat.. similar to the way sitting on a real fire hearth does..

does such a product exist? I see all kinds of fan forced heated logsets, which is little more than sitting in front of a portable space heater... which is essentially what ive done thus far this winter in my current place (no fireplace here its a modern loft). this place has electric heat from the ciling and im always cold..

whichever of the 3 places I choose to be my new place at least has gas heat so the rooms can be warm at least, however id still enjoy radiant logs and nice flicker to sit in front of on cold nights...

has anyone ever used a bare logset in an old bulding decorative fireplace?

Help with thermopile removal

Post image

Guys, I’m turning to the pros (you) to help me figure out how to remove the thermopile in my majestic fireplace. I have the replacement part but I can’t get this old one out. The 2 screws that hold the plate are placed in REVERSE! and the area is tiny. What’s the trick?

Napoleon EF30 fuse issue? 🤷‍♀️

Hey folks,

I've read through the manual and it's not helpful. Been scouring the net, also not much. The unit won't turn on. No lights, no heat. Replaced batteries in remote. Checked fuse in main breaker board. Switch is set to on. So I'm thinking it may be a fuse in the unit. But I can't even figure out how to pull the unit out to look. Anyone have any information that could help?

Dimplex Ultra vs Dimplex Bold — real-world experience?

Hey everyone — we’re planning an electric fireplace and I’m stuck between the Dimplex Bold and the Dimplex Ultra.

From what I’m seeing online, a lot of people say the Ultra looks more realistic overall, and I do like that it has the log set and the crackling sound (kinda cheesy but also… kinda awesome 😅).

My hesitation is the flames: in some videos the Ultra flame looks a bit “stringy” / wispy, whereas the Bold looks a little cleaner to my eye.

For anyone who has owned/seen both in person:

• Which one actually looks better in real life (not just marketing photos)?

• Does the Ultra flame read “stringy” in person, or is that just camera/video artifacts?

• How do the logs look on the Ultra (and does the crackle get old fast)?

• Any regrets / “wish I bought the other one” stories?

• Anything else I should consider (brightness in daylight, viewing angles, noise, reliability, heat output/usefulness)?

Would love any side-by-side opinions or even “I’ve only owned one, but here’s what I noticed” feedback. Thanks!

Looking to get a electric fireplace

Post image
4 Upvotes

Anyone have any recommendations for an electric fireplace. I have unlimited (17’) of horizontal space because as the wall is a simple partition wall, not a bearing wall. , about 16” of depth inside the wall, and I placed a 12guage 3 wire back there when I did the drywall. Looking to get a little extra warmth and “coziness” to my basement during the winter months.

novice installing an electric fireplace where wood fireplace exists

I'm interested in purchasing the Dimplex XHD23 and installing it where my wood fireplace exists. I've decided it's just too much work to up keep. I've read it comes with a frame to fit in my fireplace.

For those who have installed one, is it difficult, or should most anyone be able to install by reading the instructions? Thanks

How do I convert a decorative antique grate fireplace to provide electric heating?

Thumbnail

I have this beautiful antique cast iron grate that is currently only used with colored bulbs and fire glass for decorative lighting, and it would be so wonderful to have it actually give off heat.

I do not want to replace the antique cast iron grate (and I can’t do gas or any combustion), so how can I make this setup give off heat?

I'm used to having a wonderful wood stove and heat would be SO lovely. Help!!

(P.S. I have a clapper plug attachement to turn on the ”fire" via clapping my hands, and I HIGHLY recommend.)

I've thought about doing either of these but I’m unsure: 1) heat lamps inside instead of its current regular bulbs (BUT would this be a potential (accidental) fire hazard?) 3) small space heater behind it (BUT there is basically no space behind or around it, so it would likely ruin the vibe (and also potential accidental fire hazard?)) 4) chicken coop heating pad behind (BUT I don’t know if this will actually give off heat, unless you’re right in front of the fire)

I’m all out of ideas and searched online for answers to no avail. :(

Don't get stuck on that whole 'Realistic Flames' thing!

We recently went through the process of researching and then buying an electric fireplace insert. I read lots of comments in this subReddit talking about and comparing how realistic the flames are on various models of fireplaces, and so I came to believe that we should also look for the most realistic.

We visited three different fireplace showrooms in our area, one of them twice, and saw several different makes and models, and frankly none of them looked especially realistic in terms of the flames, although you could see that manufacturers are trying and improving. We didn’t see either of the super high end and supposedly most ‘realistic’ models - the Dimplex Optymist or Regency Ei ranges. We focused on the Modern Flames Redstone and Simplifire models as being in our price range.

The first time we went around the showrooms it was a warm sunny day so the rooms were quite bright and our eyes were adjusted to the brightness. None of the fireplaces impressed us, The second time was a cool cloudy day - a day when you feel like you want a fireplace - and when we walked into the showroom the Simplifire stood out as being the obvious choice for us. It gave the most pleasing sense of warmth, and looked far more satisfying than the Redstone, so we ordered the 25” Simplifire.

It took me just a couple of hours to unpack, put it together with the larger surround we ordered with it, and get it set up in our fireplace. We were immediately delighted with it, and continue to be so over a week later. My wife LOVES it, and she was the one really pushing for a fireplace. Visitors have loved it and commented on the pleasing aesthetic of the design. I'm including a short video here for the visual.

What we realized, and what I want to convey here, is that ‘the most realistic flame’ is not the key factor, at least not for us. We were never going to sit in front of of one of these fires and stare into it like a camp fire. I think if we did that even the most sophisticated electric fireplace would probably fail the test. The key is that we wanted a FEELING OF WARMTH in the room, and not just in a temperature sense, but in the ambient sense of the room having a warm hearth center. I think that the Simplifire's fake hot embers are pretty realistic and radiate a sense of heat more then the flames which honestly are not that realistic, but convincing enough when they're just seen out of the corner of your eye, which they are most of the time. Now, whether we’re sitting reading, watching TV or eating dinner, the warmth of the hearth is a presence in the room, and exudes a cozy feeling, even though it’s not giving out any heat (we haven’t used the actual heater part yet, and don’t really plan to). It changes the feel of the room. It’s psychological really, but important to understand and consider when you’re looking for an electric fireplace in my/our opinion. Don't get stuck on that 'realistic flame' thing!

Fireplace effect making squeaky feedback like noise -- help!

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

This is a twinstar fireplace, model 23ef010gaa. It's only 2 years old. When engaging the flame effect a loud squeaking/feedback noise appears. Usually on start, but sometimes after a short period of time.

Any thoughts on where to begin in addressing the issue?
