(Install instructions will be on the site in the description. It'll be four files that need to be placed. Or similarly, unzip it in your game's root directory.)
Edit: Some bugs still need to be worked out, e.g., just saw Cao Pi with a sword coming out of his neck.
Edit2: I've been informed this does not work on the Steam Deck. (And do not have a setup to troubleshoot it. I apologize for the inconvenience.) +Edit3: I've learnt that this may be the Linux version of Steam ignoring other .dlls from the game which is where the portrait adjustments are stored. This may result in everyone being Zhao Yun face if it fails to load. This would require more troubleshooting with Linux + Steam to not disable dlls, but may not be something I can actually patch on my end.
Edit3: 2026-10-02 Work in progress to fix the models for the in-game events which were pulling from another location. Preparing this for v3 to address this.
Edit4: 2026-10-09 weather and lighting should affect the characters in v4. For users where v4 addresses the startup issues, there is no need to update to v5 in the Files section. But for those who cannot get v4 to work, then please see v5. And if you were trying to use the no intro mod, please see the optional file there also.
There are some cloth collisions + physics that need to be addressed. Trying to get the playable costumes over for DW9 and Origins for the current cast. And also gradually getting the Origins costumes over for this.

Hello All,
Attaching a link to a 3+ GB mod that replaces generic officers in Dynasty Warriors 3 Complete Edition Remastered with their portraits and skins from Dynasty Warriors 9 (since Origins did not have all of them that appear in DW3CERe.
This is as of the release version, subject to change if Koei Tecmo updates the game or the mod gets taken down by either NexusMods, KoeiTecmo, or other.
Cheng Pu, I C U
The mod is still being uploaded to moddb as well, though more English facing on that site when the site approves the game.
If the portraits do not show up (e.g., they are white squares) and the models do not change from the generics, please post here for now. (Will check the NexusMod site as well, though it's just not part of my routine yet.)
To be clear, the mod does NOT make them playable, increase their stats/morale, give them their weapon or moveset, or their audio lines. And some liberties were taken to fit them to Unreal Engine 5 (e.g., Ding Feng, Deng Ai, and Cao Ren are a little taller for example. Some characters may be a little shorter to fit the skeleton. And some hands and weapon grips and clothes were modified to collide. And if you look too closely, you'll still see fingers going through a sword handle or into a halberd shaft.)
Edit: In terms of turnaround, this is a side effect of 5 weeks of an unsuccessful Warriors Abyss mod trying to get DW9 characters and port DW8 characters in there. Then when the demo came out, instead of launching it, immediately going for extraction and spending a week trying to get this functioning. And then instead of playing last night, about four more hours of tweaking, testing, and packing it up for upload.
Where as another said, Unreal made this a lot easier for a proof of concept, but there were some initial nightmares getting them in the game before adjusting them.
Bloopers below that prevented this from being just a clean copy paste across last week:
I know the nostalgia goggles may be taking over, but the remaster has done this to me. I'm 50 hours deep into DW3 Remaster now, and I desperately want to play DW5. Why can't they just release it on the Xbox Store? I'm an adult with adult money. Why can't I play the games I want? It's not fair 😭
One thing that really stood out to me in Souten Kouro was Lu Bu's yodeling, I honestly find it pretty impressive and strangely fitting for such an unconventional character.
What do you guys think? Is there something genuinely impressive about the way it's performed, and does it add to Lu Bu's character, or is it just an bizarre creative choice by the anime? I'm curious how fans see it, especially given how Lu Bu is usually portrayed in the games and live action.
Has the fire element but it won’t trigger. Tried all his other charge moves, nothing. Worked fine with his previous weapon I used which had lightning though? What am I missing? (Sorry for shit recording I had to improvise)
I've noticed some players advising other players to set the bodyguards to support - crossbow - and manual points. So, I've got them all equipped with those settings, but I was wondering if it was better to put points into the defense, attack or health section? I ask because eventually I'm going to go and try the harder difficulties and I'm trying to prepare for that. Any and all help will be appreciated thank you.
I wasn’t going to post anymore 5th weapons since the people who struggled are seeming to catch on now. This however had me dying laughing and I just had to post it lol! Diao Chan is an absolute chihuahua trying to fight pitbulls 🤣😂💀. You have to stay with her almost 100% after the reinforcements arrive. Once you clear the main camp she’s in, its your one chance to risk grabbing the box for the weapon. Then you have to rush your ass back to her ASAP. You gotta cover her like you love her as Lu Bu yourself. It is hilarious how in seconds she will just get gangbanged by peons the second you take your camera/view off her. I loved how much help lightning was on Lu Bu’s 4th weapon. You definitely need bow defense/shell armor because my god those archers were born and bred to merk Lu Bu. I’d consider sacrificing Tiger Amulet for the legendary scroll or marching drum. Spam musou by just tapping it to break guard, quick cancel and take advantage of the opening. I couldn’t understand how people were struggling with Lu Bu of all people, but I get it now. I found this mission extremely hilarious and didn’t really get frustrated at all. By far this one has been the most absolute fun to get. 😂🤣💀
It's going to feel great playing what started it all for my brother and I, as well as the newest title in the series 😁 I'm also going to have my kid play co-op and see if I can get them hooked
Just something I’m curious about. Just so I can be clear, this is specifically about how the characters play, not for their character. For characters that appear multiple times, try to narrow it down to specific games.
Me personally:
Lu Bu (DW8): Combo of the halberd moveset being so fun, the broken switch attack buff and his musous being fun to use.
Zhou Tai (DW8): Love the moveset of the blade and love dashing around the map.
Ganondorf (Hyrule Warriors): Mainly it’s the big attack with the shadow ganon that just sweeps and sends enemies flying. I just love watching it especially on those challenge maps that have you beat a bunch of enemies.
This is a thing in total war: three kingdoms, pretty self-explanatory, but the records mode is more historically accurate while romance mode obviously takes inspiration from ROTK like Dynasty Warriors. Should a future dynasty warriors game have these two choices in; one more historical portrayal of battles and characters/events are more grounded; while the other is more inspired by ROTK and more akin to what we normally get in the series?
I started DW3 Remastered and it's truly as 1:1 as it could be, at least for what I've played, but with some enhancements, such as the horse dash, that help make it a better experience. There's one thing I didn't like about the original that I was hoping they'd change:
Sun Jian/Cao Cao/Liu Bei staying in later levels in Musou mode if you completed the mode with them.
I think the same applied to people such as Guan Yu, although I might be remembering that wrong. Since I like going through Musou Mode with each character, it bugged me back in the day that I would beat the game with Liu Bei, and then he would be at Wu Zhang Plains in another Musou, or Sun Jian would be leading the charge at Siege of Hefei Castle even though he died early on. I don't know why they did it that way in 3, but it looks like it stayed based on what I'm seeing in the Siege of Hefei Castle Requirement column. Any reason why they kept that? It's not the end of the world, but I might not use any of those characters in Musou until I beat the game with the others first.
Heyo,
I'm the dude that's been reverse engineering the game and posting as many mod fixes as I can for all the busted stuff in the game.
First I fixed the main camp msg spam, then I fixed the morale issues causing your favorite allies to die quickly, I discovered the luck stat does absolutely nothing and made a mod that adds functionality among other smaller tweaks.
Today I bring you something different that's not so much a fix as just a cool idea I always had for the original DW3:
"What if you cold tell your allies where to go?"
Using the functionality of how you can give bodyguards orders, I added a way to do this.
From The Paused Unit Menu - Press Triangle (R) [Strong atk]:
AUTO - Default AI Behavior
ADVANCE - Move toward enemy commander
HOLD - Stay where you are, sub generals in front to protect main officer while facing enemy camp (tries to use troops to defend self)
DEFEND - Retreat to the allied commander and defend them
It's actually pretty fun and makes the maps more replayable imo, however it definitly can make stages a LOT easier. (For example I lol'd hard when I just made sun Quan follow me into Cao Cao camp at Hefei 2min in). If you have all your officers follow you, its sort of like having an elite bodyguard unit lol, try it at least once.
That said, it does make things easier, and I would like to impose some kind of cost restriction. Originally I was going to tie the # of available orders to RANK or KILLS, but theres a big UX problem here.
How do you create and track a new resource in memory and then convey that to the player? (kind of hard to add new UI)
How do you confirm/subtract the spent cost? Currently if you want to set someone to FOLLOW you have to toggle through 3 other options before reaching FOLLOW. So does that cost 3 orders? It shouldn't but idk how I would add more UX steps in the menu here.
Anyway, that said I am open to ideas.
Requests
Speaking of ideas, I've gotten a bunch of DMs from various people asking for mod requests. I am actually open to the idea of making mods for others in exchange for playtesting feedback on my own ROTK inspired indie games public demo. If that interests you then hit me up.
Go mounted attack and musou charge build and the levels a breeze. His 4th weapon has insane mounted attack and extra normal attack as well that puts you 4 off cap without a limit broken tiger amulet.
Done during 1st timing his musou mode so not stat capps. Has a tonne of mounted attack on his 4th so cavalry build it. I did take war drum instead of musou charge otherwise it's extremely difficult to get to the point you can leave Sun jian and allows you to pick of cow cows officers so his morale goes down so gan ning can clear troops for the enter the main camp win condition
