News New Rule: Rule #5 (Source Must Be Mentioned)

Hi, guys! We just published a new rule. From now on, a source has to be mentioned for every brand recommended. You can put your source in quote blocks (example 1) or you can mention right after the recommended brand in parentheses (example 2). This lets us know that you intended to comment in this subreddit. This also saves everyone time from fact-checking.

Example 1:

I recommend Dove Shampoo.

Source: PETA

Example 2:

I would suggest the Milani lipstick (LB).

Skincare (Ok w/ any Parent Company) cruelty free dupe for cera ve daily moisturizing lotion

hello! i’m trying to gradually switch to cruelty free items every time i run out of something.

something im preparing for is my moisturizer, as i have been using cera ve daily moisturizing lotion for around 6 years every day at night and in the morning with my sunscreen or tretinoin mixed in.
what i like about it is that it doesn’t feel oily or thick. also its worth noting that my skin gets oily more than dry. i also will only get drugstore products!
so that is why im okay with any parent company, as i know being drugstore makes the selection for cf parent companies much smaller (if im wrong feel free to lmk :])

if someone could give me a good recommendation for something that is cruelty free that fits this criteria that would be really appreciated!

tl:dr im looking for a cf drugstore moisturizer similar to cera ve daily moisturizer that isn’t thick or oily to use in the morning and night time and i have oily-normal skin.

Makeup (Ok w/ any Parent Company) Is it safe to buy cruelty-free makeup from Amazon?

I'm trying to find a good primer because I never used one and I feel like I'm missing it in my makeup routine. I just want to smooth out my pores and help foundation look better on my skin, because it looks kinda patchy after some hours. My makeup and skincare or any product in general has always been and will be cruelty-free so the primer should be the same, but finding a good primer and cruelty-free its pretty hard ngl. I did some research and Milani's blur out primer seemed pretty good, I already use their baked blush so i already knew their brand was cruelty-free.

My problem is I have to order from Amazon because none of the stores near me seem to carry it, I did order some things from Amazon but Makeup never, so I'm kinda scared it will come broken or fake idk. I know I'm probably overreacting but hey its better to be safe then regretting it later lol. Anyone ordered makeup from there or this product, is it safe?

Hair Care (Ok w/ any Parent Company) Hair regrowth serums

Looking for CF alternatives to hair regrowth serums for my lashes, brows, and hair.

Full disclosure: my hair loss is related to breast cancer treatment. I'm out of chemo now but my hair is coming back really thin and sparse so my doctor prescribed me Latisse for my lashes. She mentioned that Rogaine and Monoxodill are clinically proven to work for head hair, but they all test on animals.

I'm currently debating between Sweed or Vegamour. Has anyone tried these brands?

Edit: Not looking for health or medical advice. Thanks.

Hair Care (CF Parent Company Only) Cherry blossom perfume 🌸

Hi there ! I have this Cherry Blossom perfume from L'Occitane and I learnt the brand is not cruelty free.. huge disappointment, I wore this perfume for years 😭
I still have half a bottle, but I love it so much I would love to get an alternative for when it runs out, I obviously won't be buying again from them.

Do you know any ? It's a soft and fresh fragrance, almost soapy on my skin!

Makeup (CF Parent Company Only) Waterproof mascara recommendation

Any recommendations for waterproof mascara? I've used Buxom's waterproof lash volumizing mascara for so long, but it seems like they've changed the formula recently. Waterproof is a must, I am constantly using eye drops for allergies and "water resistant" formulas don't hold up.

Hair Care (Ok w/ any Parent Company) Permanent blue-black hair dye?

I'm looking for a cruelty free permanent hair colour in a shade similar to L'Oreal Casting Creme Gloss in 'blue black' or Clairol Nice'n Easy in 'midnight blue'. This is my go to colour, but I'm finding it impossible to find a CF brand that has the same kind of shade, it specifically has to be blue-black, most of the ones I can find are just black.

Thanks!

Edit: I'm in the UK, so anything that's easily available here would be helpful!

Makeup (Ok w/ any Parent Company) Looking for a dupe for this, which Tarte seems to be phasing out.

Post image
8 Upvotes

This is my absolute favorite. It goes on easily, it’s a nice light formula, it makes me skin look great, and it’s got SPF in i. However, it seems that tarte is replacing it with something else that is not as good and is in a smaller bottle for the same price. I’m looking for recommendations for something similar if you’re familiar with this product.

Makeup (Ok w/ any Parent Company) Eye pencil recommendations please

I’m looking for eye pencil, price point doesn’t matter, drugstore/high end/indie all welcome. What I’m looking for is wooden pencil that can be sharpened and I want to use it in my waterline, I have old NYX and it was fine, but it has always slightly irritated my eyes and due to them not having testers in my local stores anymore i can’t try the formula as it is now, mine is way too old for my liking. I’m in the US, but European/Korean etc brands are also welcome.

General Advice (No Product Recommendations) Sephora brand?

Does this happen to anyone else? I went into a Sephora the other day looking for a new product (this time, I was looking for a hand cream). When asked if I wanted assistance, I just said that I'm looking for a new hand cream and I'm not picky, but I just need it to be cruelty free. They immediately suggested Sephora Brand. I just apologised and said, I won't buy the Sephora brand because it's not cruelty free. They said yes, it is. I said not according to Google. They again said that it definitely is. I still didn't buy it, because everything I've read online says it isn't cruelty free. Is it cruelty free or not?

This is not the first time this has happened. It's happened in many Sephoras in many different countries. I go into a Sephora (or some similar type store), and it's so clear that no one has any idea which brands they stock are cruelty free or not. I went into one store and when asked if I needed any help, I just said I was looking for a new product and that I need it to be cruelty free, and was told that "pretty much all of the brands they sell are cruelty free". But looking around, even I could tell that at least half of the brands they stocked were not in fact cruelty free. I've completely given up on getting assistance in stores because of this. If you were someone who just took the staff's word for it, you could end up buying a bunch of stuff that isn't actually cruelty free.

General Advice (No Product Recommendations) It’s a pity Instagrammer Jessica Gurunathan stop being cruelty free

She’s a Kiwi Influencer. If you’ve seen her content before than you might remember her being all about cruelty free beauty. She even had a highlights on her Instagram page about it, she’s deleted the highlights. As far as I’m aware she didn’t address the whole no longer being cruelty free thing. I believe she’s stopped being cruelty free because there are post on her Instagram showing her attending L’Oréal and Maybelline events. It was possibly said in her bio before cruelty free beauty and if it was it’s now not there anymore.

General Advice (No Product Recommendations) I made a free cruelty-free brand checker. Honest feedback welcome

Hi all, I've spent the last few months building www.ahomekind.com, a free site that helps you check whether a brand is cruelty-free. It's still in beta, and I'd love your honest feedback.

The main features:

- Brand checker for over 1,000 brands (so far), with sources
- Barcode scanner
- Ingredient checker
- Ethical ratings from Good On You and the Good Shopping Guide, where applicable

It's free with no sign-up. The site has a small shop and a few affiliate links. Eventually I'd like it to earn a little, and I'm planning to donate some of the profits to animal and environmental charities, but this is still a work in progress.

Feedback that would help most:

- Any brand that's wrong or missing
- Barcodes that don't scan or give the wrong brand
- Ingredients it misses or flags when it shouldn’t
- Anything broken or confusing

Please have a look around the rest of the site too. There's a Learn section, an impact calculator, a quiz, and a Take Action page where I'll be adding new petitions and ways to help regularly.

The more people who know about animal testing, the more pressure there is on brands to stop, so I'm hoping this makes it easier to shop kind and to speak up.

Any and all feedback is welcome, and thank you mods for approving this post😊

Ash

Makeup (CF Parent Company Only) Lancôme Lash Idole dupes

I’m working on making my entire makeup routine cruelty free, my last item is mascara. I’ve been researching online for Lancôme lash idole dupes, seems like tower28 or ilia might work?

Curious if anyone here has any mascara suggestions that are similar? Thanks!

Skincare (Ok w/ any Parent Company) Nivea lip balm

I love the Nivea lip balms but I know they’re not cruelty free and I’m almost finished with the current one I have. I’d like to replace it with something similar but I’m not sure what. I particularly like the consistency of them as they’re quite creamy and bonus points if it has SPF

Any suggestions are welcome!

Makeup (Ok w/ any Parent Company) Is Winks Fluffy Clusters False Lashes cruelty free?

So, for those of you who don't know, false lashes can often be made of mink hair or human hair, which is not cf/vegan.

I think they are vegan, since on the website I am looking at them on (It's a scandinavian website named "Kicks") says "100% Synthetic Hair", although the packaging does not say anything about being vegan and I cant find them at all on the Ardell website. Does anyone here know the answer? It seems to be the best clusters avaliable to me at a reasonable price so I would be very happy if they were vegan/CF, but I will of course not buy them if they are not made from synthetic hair. :)

Skincare (Ok w/ any Parent Company) Alternative to Honey Trap?

As someone who has religiously used Honey Trap for the past 15 years, I’m so upset with the new formula. Not only is it not nearly as good, one tube lasted me a month versus 3 months with the OG tin formula… not sustainable nor worth it… I know I’m not the only one upset with the change so I was just wondering if anyone has found a good alternative that could remotely replace the tin formula. I’m not really interested in drugstore alternatives (EOS, Blistex, Burt’s Bees, etc.) as I’ve tried most of them and don’t care for them much. Ideally I’d like something natural and cruelty free. I appreciate any recommendations in advance! :)
