Are you in India? Please head to r/IndiaCareers for better-fitting advice!

Not to say we don't love y'all, but your area, jobs, salaries, situations, costs, education are all vastly different and this has always been a more USA/Euro group. I'm afraid most of our mods are Western based and experienced. Which means we are not effective to moderate for issues as much as you'd think.
You are absolutely welcome to post/comment here in general, but things specific to India is a better fit in an India-specific careers group with India-based/knowledgeable mods and policies!

I don’t know where am I going.

I have a 6-year experience in Support snd operation roles. Worked with startups, fintechs and MNC’s. But never got out of this Weekend shifts and night shifts which are eating me up inside out.

I am 28 and I have marriage plans but this job is a bit concerning. I earn around 7.5lpa, honestly not satisfied. I have hit the ceiling of pay to an operations executive, no company pays above that.

I want a serious reconstruction of my career this is so tough. Not an engineer guy so cannot think of tech jobs. I started a DA course but hardly any work to present. Honestly, I need a serious advice please, if I can now switch to BA or DA roles if yes, what’s the roadmap. Self-learn then how?

ā€œWhich is better, skills or knowledge?ā€

I’m thinking about which course to take this coming December: BSBA Marketing or Culinary Arts specializing in Pastry. I know I can use both in the future, but I can only choose one.
Which do you think would be more beneficial, especially when it comes to running a business? I’d really appreciate any advice. Thank you! ā¤ļø

prove to me that your career doesn't suck (and is meaningful?)

Okay, so the title is a bit of a joke. In the 3 years I've been out of high school, I've gone in 4 different career directions and can't find anything that seems to be worth, well, committing my life to (or at least many years and money). I'd love to hear what some of you do, IF it somehow bypasses all of the "Big Bad 8" (my personal opinion of "bad", of course).

  1. Living paycheque to paycheque or struggling to afford anything slightly beyond essentials (a flight to visit family once a year, organic groceries, medication, sport costs)
  2. Going into major debt for the next decade(s) just to pay for tuition/training
  3. Sitting at a desk and/or looking at a screen for many hours a day
  4. Developing permanent back/neck/wrist/lung issues by 30
  5. Contributing nothing to people, animals, or the planet so that my life feels meaningless
  6. Not having any flexibility (in schedule, time off or financially) so that I can't have a balanced life outside of work for myself, family, friends, hobbies, etc.
  7. "Wasting" (my term btw, of course this is a personal take) my 20s studying intensively every day for 10 or 15 years of education
  8. Working in a field that's impossible to find a position in; either the industry is collapsing, you need to make the position yourself, it's experiencing major pay cuts, replaced by AI, etc.

CAREER ADVICE for average pcm student (yeah im currently studying pcm cs)

Heyy, PCM CS student here,

So the thing is I don't know what to do after PCM and I don't have any particular interest in anything and im really confused +frustrated..

I'm not good at cs and average at everything

I like fashion( the only thing that I THINK I've got some interest )

At first I thought to take btech, but maths is my weakest subject so that won't fit me.

Then I thought to take bsc (I'm not able to figure what specific bsc i should choose)

NOW im interested in studying abroad "Fashion studies" .

I'm not from a financial stable family so I should consider going with max scholarship ( we are not financially stable for me to do multiple degrees or leave the course in the middle if i find my interest)

I really need some advice

Gotta make my future secure, also is taking fashion studies /fashion merchandising a good option

Also suggest me universities countries and all..

Guys im really confused and everyone around me got a goal and they know what to do after pcm

I can't decide between to vastly different fields, should I do pre med or try to work in the food and be industry?

i can't decide, I've loved baking all my life and spent the last years of highschool in baking/cafe hospitality jobs. However I'm very worried about the money aspect. Also I'm not very business savvy so running a business seems daunting.

My other option would be premed. I'm pretty good at science imo and it was one of my best subjects in school so that's why I think I could maybe hack it as a doctor. the biggest factor is obviously money/job stability. The only thing is I don't really like medicine or science.

So right now i'm a science major on the premed track but I was thinking of switching to hospitality and tourism (however Idk how the job market will look with that), stay with my major and just thugging it out for like ten more years (undergrad + med school or wtv) or just dropping out completely and trying to climb the corporate ladder at my job/ get a job as a bartender (im thin and gay so I can probably make it in the gay bar industry?)

My mother is advising me to not go the business route since she did that (marketing) and feels like even if I don't go to med school i'll be better off with a science degree.

what positions balance physical and mental work? (France)

Hello,

I am a 2nd year undergrad student currently studying full time for my BSc in Biology & Life Sciences. I previously earned a diploma in business management (decided I hated learning how to pull money from people), a diploma in event management (realised I burn out around people too fast and the stress is insane), ran a small company doing landscaping (too many competitors in my area), and another supplying par-baked goods to local restaurants and groceries (loved it, but felt like I wasn't thinking enough).

I've run into a wall, as I've tried quite a few directions and none feel right yet. I don't want to continue to throw money and time at a degree without a career direction. I've considered medical positions (as I love to problem solve and work on cases), but I cannot see myself sitting through another 8 years of intensive memorizing and textbooks. Research is far too much reading and sitting at a desk (for me). I want to have a family in 6-8 years and don't want a position where I'm on work trips for weeks at a time. Trades such as carpentry or roofing are something I enjoy, but can't image ruining my body for (and not using my brain as much as I'd like to). Nothing seems to fit perfectly with the life I want to make for myself. Here's what I'm looking for in a career. If you have any ideas of what might check a lot of these boxes, please enlighten me!

  • Strong work-life balance; a salary high enough to work part-time to enjoy hobbies & family
  • Hands-on, physical work part of the time; I could not stand a desk job, phone job, or hunching over something for hours at a time but also don't want to ruin my back/neck by 30
  • New problem solving/challenges every day! I know I won't last if everyday is the same
  • Something where I make a positive impact on people, animals or the planet. I don't mind if my work goes unnoticed, but I need to be doing something impactful.
  • Doesn't require $500,000 in debt and another decade of schooling. Finishing my BSc and getting a masters? Cool. Doing 4 years of medical school, a PhD, residency, specializations? I don't think me or my ADHD can survive it. Yes, I realise I could "lock in" and focus, but realistically I know I will be miserable and waste a large portion of my 20's stressed out.

Should I continue with an unpaid internship at a startup or look for other opportunities?

Hi everyone,

I'm a 2024 BTech graduate with a nearly 2-year career gap, and I recently joined a small startup with around 25 employees as a Full Stack Developer Intern (MERN stack). This is my first internship, and I would appreciate some honest advice.

Here are the terms of the internship:

  • Work mode: Work from home initially, with a possibility of hybrid work later if the company allows it.
  • First 3 months: Completely unpaid.
  • Next 3 months: Performance-based stipend, but the amount hasn't been specified.
  • After 6 months: They may offer a full-time position with a salary based on my performance, but the salary range and exact terms haven't been disclosed.

The company also has experienced developers, so I hope to learn from them and gain practical industry experience.

My concern is that I'm being asked to work for three months without pay, and even after six months, there is no guarantee of a job or a clearly defined stipend or salary.

Since I already have a 2-year career gap, I'm wondering whether accepting this opportunity is a sensible way to restart my career or whether I should continue applying for paid internships and fresher developer jobs.

I'd appreciate your suggestions on a few things:

  1. Is it worth accepting this opportunity given my career gap and lack of prior experience?
  2. Is a three-month unpaid internship reasonable, especially when the stipend and future salary aren't specified?
  3. Should I continue with this internship while applying for other opportunities, or focus entirely on finding a paid job?
  4. Has anyone faced a similar situation at a startup? What was your experience?

I'm willing to work hard and learn, but I also want to make a decision that helps my career in the long term.

Please share your honest opinions, especially if you're a developer or someone who has worked at an early-stage startup in India.

Making a career decision: Which profession will you choose?

Between 3:

- BI Data Analyst

-Java Full Stack Developer

-DevOps Engineer

I have an average knowledge of each, and need to make a decision, but I'm not really sure; I am afraid of choosing the wrong career.

Please, say whatever comes to mind. I need a broader perspective—one that isn’t limited solely to my own way of seeing things.

Applying for 2nd masters I order to get internships lol

This job market is killing me and I was wondering of there are people put there that decided to enroll back as a student to get internships and then stay at the company after that and drop the degree

Because it’s so hard to get a job and I can’t get an internship without being a student

I know there are graduate roles but so many are applying that I won’t even get it

Has anyone done this and if so which uni did you apply to and can that uni be online šŸ‘€

Where should I go after University?

This is for the UK. I got my mathematics bsc degree and now I am looking into jobs and career stuff. I do not know what I want to do or how to get into anything. Ive tried gradcracker and prospects for looking for stuff but no industry stands out something I want to do. Im trying to apply to local stuff (don't have a car cause its expensive). Any local stuff i apply to is half hearted as I do not know what to do and the slog of job applying is just demotivating.

The only things to note are that I have 0 work experience, only ever did MATLAB as programming at uni and based on my parents experience, never want to go in teaching.

so i'm doing a prep year for uni rn and i have to decide between physics and software engineering pretty soon i was mostly stuck on the job/money side vs what i actually like. then my teacher told me something i never thought about, basically dont pick just for the money or getting a job, pick for the people you'll meet there. like the ppl in physics and the ppl in software are kind of different, and they're going to be my classmates and friends for the next few years and now i cant stop thinking about it thanks šŸ™

A Personal Reflection from Someone in Their 30s: College, Civil Service, or Moving Abroad?

Right now, I feel a little lost. I worked for 13 years in the travel and events industry, until I ended up completely burned out and also had some health issues.

After the pandemic, I worked as a ā€œfreelancerā€ because I couldn’t find a job, and later on, I started working under contract for other companies. I worked for large companies that treated both me and my coworkers quite poorly. There was a lot of micromanagement, very little room to grow, and I felt there was no space for me to develop professionally.

I’m European and have been living in Spain for almost 10 years. I speak five languages, and even so, I’m finding it very difficult to break away from this industry. At my last job, I was even fired on the last day of my probationary period, without any explanation.

I was collecting unemployment benefits, and now I’m working as an executive assistant, but at the same time, I’m completely rethinking what I want to do with my life. I don’t have a college degree. I’ve worked a lot and have lived and worked in different parts of the world—the United Kingdom, Australia, and now Spain—and I’m thinking about going back to college or preparing for civil service exams.

But I have so many doubts about what’s really best for me. Am I thinking about taking the civil service exams simply because it’s the safe option? Do I really like the idea of studying for so many years? And what for?

Two employers gave me almost identical interview feedback. How can I improve before my next analyst interview?

I’ve recently interviewed for two positions and received very similar feedback from both employers.
Both said I came across as articulate, engaging, enthusiastic and motivated, with a genuine interest in sustainability.

However, both also highlighted the same weakness: I tend to discuss sustainability concepts and frameworks at a high level rather than explaining specific examples of my own work, the actions I took and the outcomes I achieved.
One employer also suggested strengthening my practical data analysis and Excel skills.
I’ve now secured an interview for a Junior Governance and Sustainability Analyst position within a financial services advisory business. The role involves analysing corporate governance and sustainability disclosures, researching investor expectations and preparing recommendations for clients.
I really want to improve my interview technique before this opportunity.
A family member suggested preparing four strong examples from my experience that I can adapt to different competency questions.
I’d really appreciate advice from anyone working in ESG, corporate governance, consulting or analyst positions.
- How do you demonstrate analytical ability through practical examples rather than simply discussing frameworks?
- What level of detail do interviewers expect from junior analysts when describing their individual contributions?
- Is preparing four adaptable STAR examples a good strategy?
- What would make a candidate stand out in an interview for this type of role?
I’d particularly appreciate advice from people who have interviewed or hired junior analysts.

Thank you! I’m also aware my nerves massively affecting the quality of the answer I give and I’m working on that!

RDH or sonographer?

16 year old, junior year Highschool

I’m struggling to choose between sonography and dental hygiene (RDH), and I’d love advice from people in either field!

I live in Washington, where both careers pay well. My biggest concern with RDH is that PTO, health insurance, and other benefits seem to depend on the dental office, while sonography jobs seem more likely to offer them.

I’m in Running Start, completing my prerequisites during junior and senior year. My goal is to finish my prerequisites in high school, complete a 2-year program after graduation, and start working around age 20. However, sonography programs may require another year of prerequisites.

Is sonography worth the extra time for the benefits, or would you choose RDH? How are the benefits, work-life balance, and job satisfaction in both careers? I’d especially appreciate advice from people working in Washington!

is no diversity in a company a red flag?

I'm a college sophomore and I recently interviewed for a financial advisory firm owned under ameriprise. When researching the company, I found that all employees seemed to be caucasion, which is fine but looking further I realized that all the interns they had hired were also the same race. I cannot seem to find a single person of color in this large private advisory and I'm not sure if this is a red flag or not. I myself am of south-asian descent so I'm mildly concerned whether I'd be the only person of color- thoughts?

can i become a detective/special agent with a forensic psychology degree?

im currently a senior in highschool and i hope to become either a detective or a special agent in the fbi. i initially gained interest in this field with an interest in forensic psychology. but after doing some research, i found that the chances of me actually become a forensic psychologist are very low. along with that, im not very interested in the biological part of psychology and believe it'll de-motive me. should i switch to a different degree? what would help me become a special agent in the FBI or a detective faster. (im also currently a law enforcement explorer which can help me find a job quicker)

Advice a mum

Hi everyone! I’d really appreciate some career advice.
I have experience in shipping operations and customer service, and I’m currently at home taking care of my young children. I’d love to use this time productively, earn an income from home, and continue developing my skills while balancing childcare.
I’m open to remote work opportunities, small business ideas I can start with little capital, or affordable courses that could help me learn a valuable skill.
For those who have been in a similar situation, what worked for you? What would you recommend I learn or try?
I’d genuinely appreciate any advice. Thank you!

Healthcare career decision: RN vs MRI Tech

Hello. I am currently working in Social Work and want to make a change in my career. I am trying to choose between RN and MRI tech but needing help on decision.

I am currently 42 years old and both schools would take the same amount of time.

I guess my conflict is which career is more physically sustainable for next 10-15 years. What are the less physically demanding RN positions out there? Also — are there opportunities to travel for each?

What's a workplace rule that exists mainly because one person messed up once?

I've always wondered how many policies started with one very specific incident.
