Was raised in abject, abusive poverty in a dysfunctional family. The Secret Garden showed me a means to escape, albeit only in brief segments. The most despicable thief is the one who robs you of your childhood. Read. Escape. Live.

I'm sorry to hear you had a troubled childhood. I hope things are better for you now :)

I had somewhat of a rough childhood as well and this book also opened a door for me. Still one of my favourite books (I enjoyed the 1993 film a lot as a kid too).

Dude, I am so sorry to hear about that. I loved that book, and it directed me to make gardens. I hope you can find a way to use your background to help others in the same situations.

I loved A Little Princess for this exact same reason. Also, the movie directed by Alfonso Cuaron is beautiful.

I grew up in a very poor household too and have the same feelings about the Secret Garden. I read it so many times. It taught me so much and gave me so much peace and hope that I could change my own circumstances. It taught me that money has absolutely nothing to do with happiness. That a love of growing things is a special balm. That persisting through challenges is much easier with a friend. And now I'm reading it to my boys who are loving it :)
