Athens Event Hard week of work? Seasonal depression? Bad breakup? Wanna scream into the void? Can't afford therapy? Perhaps group mutual combat swordfighting with pool noodles is the relief you seek

Post image
85 Upvotes

Inspired by a couple different posts here in over the months and years, it's finally a real thing. NEXT Saturday, Oct 24th, come on down Southeast Clarke Park (4440 Lexington Rd) at high NOON and join us in pool noodle sword fights with friends and strangers. Completely free. Screaming is encouraged. Metal music will be provided if needed.

There will be 34 pool noodles available for use, just please don't take them home with you, we gonna need em for next time. If more people show up, we'll have to rotate. If no one shows up, I'll just be sad and alone.

I'm gonna tag some users from said previous posts in a comment below that indicated they might be interest in such a thing.

And please no comments about the flyer, it was made by an autistic eleventeen year old child for zero compensation.

Spotted this months ago in Winterville. It’s gone now but I assume it’s relocated in Watkinsville now off Daniel’s Bridge Rd.
Anyone seen this ??

Why does this exist? Who makes this? Why am I now and have I always been on the mailing list? Is someone trying to tell me something? Are you in danger? Make it make sense!

"DO YOU RECOGNIZE ME OR MY OWNER? The shelter has not been able to contact anyone through the lost pet post or via the phone number connected to Maggie May's microchip, but we'd LOVE to reunite her with her person.

Maggie May is at Athens-Clarke County Animal Services. Her owner can come by 125 Buddy Christian Way in Athens 11-4 any day except Sundays (12-3) and Mondays (12-4). He can also call 706-613-3540 or email animalservices@accgov.com."

Question / Request European Shop suggestions

We are looking for a local grocery store that sells buckwheat. We like it as a healthy and tasty alternative to rice, but have yet to find it in a local store.

We are currently getting it at the Bosnia Market in Lawrenceville, but that is not a quick drive.

We are hoping for something closer that we didn't consider yet. Thank you

Who are y’all using for routine Pest Control?

I was using American Pest Control, it was $75 per treatment, then switched to Scout who offered me $50 but are now raising it into $60

This is for a 1000 square-foot house, inside and outside, quarterly.

Rants & Raves Stop tailgating me at night!

Yes, this is a very ‘old man yells at kids on lawn’ post. But y’all need to leave some space. I drive the speed limit at night (not UNDER the speed limit, usually right at it) because I’ve seen deer everywhere and I’m terrified of hitting one. People are ALWAYS right on my bumper and I’m terrified I’m gonna get hit. Can y’all back off? Please?

Got this in my PO Box today. 8 upvotes! And my old UGA hat!

I know what the first statement references, but the other one has me lost. I voted in favor of the DREAMS needs-based scholarship program.

Don’t believe these out of state dark money mailers.

Hi! We have seen your concerns with our building going up for lease. Please do not worry as we are not closing. Just relocating. Watkinsville and commerce will remain untouched, we have just decided it’s time for a fresh new location change.

Barnett and Lexington intersection just now

Figure out film every time I run past here and post it. Well, at least one more time just wanted to highlight that it’s everybody.

Edit: counting and pasting from my last post a few days ago the context. Sorry I didn’t include it for people that didn’t see the other post. I literally posted this 60 seconds after recording it and just went on my way.

Text from the other post but same intersection:
So out of pure frustration, I took this video today. It is when you’re headed eastbound on Lexington, this is the Barnett Shoals intersection. I run past this 3 to 5 times a week when you’re coming off the loop or are coming down Lexington and take a right on Barnett Shoals, there are people coming off the loop and down Lexington, who cannot see the red turn lights and think it’s a keep moving at all time. This has been happening for months and it includes police officers and the number 27 bus yesterday who I threw my hand up at to tell him to stop and he looked at me like I was a moron. I pointed up and showed him that it was a do not turn on red and after I walked past him to get to the other side of the road, he immediately pulled through. I called the nonemergency number today to report this, but it’s ultimately a DOT issue. Someone will die at this light. It is a crosswalk at a light. It’s going to be a kid going to the racetrack to try to get snacks on a scooter. They need to put a light on a post that is much lower because people cannot see this light for some reason.

Out with the old and in with the new…

For towels at least. The new ACCAS director has tossed out all the blankets, towels, sheets, and pet beds in the shelter to make space for the newest downgrade: moving padding.
The change was made because they are better at absorbing messes and easier to manage.

Staff and volunteers are left scrambling as the temperatures are expected to plunge this weekend, leaving the dogs without heat and without a blanket to keep them warm.

Geriatric and injured dogs and cats are forced to curl up on the hard concrete floor with only a thin piece of moving padding underneath them.

You might ask, what can the community do to help?
Great question, with a difficult answer. Donations enter the front door and are immediately ordered to be disposed of in the back. Hand made beds tossed into the wind.
I have no answer to this question. Perhaps you can help by voicing concerns over freezing and/or painful living conditions. Otherwise, stay tuned for outcomes.

Massage/physical therapy/bodywork?

I don’t know if this even exists but I’m shooting my shot. I am looking for someone in Athens who does physio/bodywork- would love a combination of massage, cupping, scraping, maybe even dry needling. I’m 29 and dealing with some chronic pain. Would love a self pay, no referral type of situation- I don’t want to deal with doctors or insurance.

Meetup! Club Ned Anime Society - We will never cheat at trivia

Just an update on a small pivot the club is making. Our basic operations aren't changing. We're still showing Japanese animation, in Japanese in English subtitles. We'll still be the "townie anime club" and be the older person's counterpart to the college anime club down the road. But we are shifting our focus to a more "mental health" oriented purpose. If you've checked out our website you may have noticed a lot more verbiage about that. Simply put, as we know, an online-only social life isn't great for pretty much everyone. We're people, and we need physical proximity to other people to really socialize because online "company" only makes us lonelier. Yes it takes a bit more effort to make it out to events, but anything worth having, including mental health comes with a cost. And I think it's one that we can make it a habit to bear.

So with that in mind, in addition to the weekly anime showings, we're going to double our efforts to have in-person meetups. We'll be at Porchfest and Wild Rumpus, and we're also going to try to form a trivia team that will compete at least monthly. If this appeals to you, please join our Discord. While you can get to know us only so well through text, it is a starting point before we'll see you in the 3D space where real stuff happens.

Anyone on here work for this company?

I work at barberito's and i can't tell if my boss wants to fire me or if she just doesn't want me to get tips. We don't get tips until training is over. She said training is 3 days. She extended my training time and said she thinks I am not ready to take the test yet. We have to pass the test to pass training and to get tips. They also closed the store when the weather was bad a few days ago. I can't afford to work for only $8 an hour. I thought that the job was easy. I guess not cause they extended my training. I have over 10 years of restaurant experience. I also don't have enough hours there. It is insulting to hear that i need "more time for training" when the job is easy and i have over a decade of restaurant experience.

I moved away from Athens and I regret it.
I moved away from Athens and found a better place to live and work.
Unsure.
I currently live in Athens and have no plans to move.
I currently live in Athens and plan to move away soon.
I locked in the church across from Manhattan and can’t do anything but bark like a Georgia Bulldawg.

Tropical smoothie being built in Georgetown Plaza?

My husband and I both work in GT plaza and have heard circulations that there will be one opening near the mochinut/barbs. I looked it up and saw there’s a Google Maps location for it as temporarily closed. Are we getting one? 🤞🏼

Best PSL/fall drink?

I'm sick of giving my money to big Pumpkin Spice and want to try some local coffee shops. What places around here do a really delightful pumpkin spice latte (or other seasonal fall drink) that's worth checking out?

Best apple brown sugar latte would also be appreciated if anyone has leads on those.

Thank you!
