Discussion Should Sonarr also add AniDB in V5?

Thumbnail
0 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I'm sure a lot of you either use or are aware of Sonarr.

Can I please muster up the support of the anime community to get the developers to consider adding AniDB to Sonarr V5

(bearing in mind they are adding TMDB so would be tackling some of the struggles with having an additional DB for shows)

Question Why do release groups for anime dubs never put signs into the dubtitles?

27 Upvotes

It bothers me immensely. Yes this is a vent but I also want to know why its not done, so I can understand why I have to be inconvenienced like this.

FYI I dont care about sub vs dub, let people enjoy what they want.

I am extremely grateful for groups that release animes with subs that match the dub. I am somewhat hearing impaired so really like having subs on that match the English dialogue.

However for the life of me I do NOT UNDERSTAND why SIGNS and SUBS are not mixed.

I understand having signs only, that makes sense so when watching dub you can still read what is written.

But why do those of us who like having the dubtitles get the middle finger and have to pick between having signs OR having the dialogue.

It is so rare that I find a release that has it so I can both enjoy the dub dialogue while also being able to read on screen text.

I have lost count of the number of times I have had to back up a video, switch to signs to read what is on screen then switch back to subs so I catch what is being said. World ending? No. Inconvenient and immersion breaking? Immensely.

Japanese subs get the signs along side the dialogue but dubs? nope.

I swear it used to be common to just always have the signs in subs but for some reason it just stopped.

Is there an actual reason for it or do they just not want to?

Question Are there any good websites that use the legacy fansub style of captions?

0 Upvotes

I personally really prefer the look of the subtitles of old and would rather use those if possible. The site I was using recently switched to a modern style and I would like recommendations for replacements.

Developer Post Kurono (kurono.nl) - anime streaming with sub & dub, watch parties, AniList/MAL sync and a TV app [Site Discussion]

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

0 Upvotes

Free anime in sub and dub, no account needed, and your MAL/AniList list updates itself while you watch. That's Kurono.

Hi everyone, I'm the developer of Kurono (https://kurono.nl). The videos come from existing sources, Kurono doesn't host them. What I build is everything around that: the player, the tracking and the community features.

Library

  • 2,800+ series and movies with sub and dub, from current simulcasts to older classics (Pokémon is there in SUB)
  • Original Japanese titles shown next to the English ones
  • Live countdown to the next episode of airing shows, and a simulcast calendar
  • Built-in manga reader with reading history

Player

  • Skip intro and outro, double-tap to skip on mobile
  • Switch between sub and dub per episode. Dubs that reuse the Japanese subtitle file get their subtitle timing corrected to the English audio
  • Subtitle font, size and background settings
  • Auto-next with a countdown, binge mode, playback speed 0.5x to 2x
  • Filler/canon badges with an option to skip filler automatically
  • Sleep timer, picture-in-picture and keyboard shortcuts (press ? in the player)

Tracking

  • MyAnimeList and AniList sync: finished episodes are added to your list automatically, and you can import your existing list
  • Continue watching, watch history and watchlist, synced across devices
  • Push notifications when a new episode of your shows is out
  • Stats, 30 achievements and a yearly Kurono Wrapped

Together

  • Watch parties: watch in sync with friends, with chat
  • Friends, public profiles, comments and star ratings on series and episodes

Anywhere

  • Save episodes offline and export them as MP4 + SRT
  • Android TV / TV box app (kurono.nl/kurono-tv.apk), or sign in on any TV browser with a code
  • Install it as an app on your phone or desktop

Only normal banner ads, no popups or redirects.

Happy to answer any questions about the site.

Discussion Looking for anime streaming sites where I can adjust the video quality.

0 Upvotes

I am looking for streaming sites where I can adjust the quality.

I don't have wifi so I use mobile data to watch anime but my internet quota runs out if I watch it in HD, so I need a site where I can adjust the quality.

Discussion What open source software do you use to watch both dub and sub anime?

23 Upvotes

Ani-cli is my go to but I need some backups. Thanks in advance!

Edit: I meant as in the program/software/site you use that hosts the anime. Not necessarily the video player. Hope this clears things up.

Question Hayase, SeaAnime, and other Anime Apps. What Alternatives exist?

18 Upvotes

Okay so, one day, Hayase was released. I tried it out, liked the idea. Anime watching as an program rather then a website, all the anime we want, easily accessible.

Then, the bloat and lack of polish started creeping in. I left issues on github, they got shut down. I post comment on reddit, dev comes in and says he refuses to work on improves to be a good experience for PC users, because he wants it focused on fucking television use. I ask least for some basics like a button to access our anime list be placed on the left bar, or settings to hide stuff we wont use like calendar and live chat, and he just refuses. Any UI layout stuff is also refused for TV remove concerns. (Also who the fuck texts people in a public chat with a TV remote???).

(Sticking out in my mind, i remember asking for at least some basic right click options, and being rejected because tv remotes can't point and right click. No right click menu in 2026 is absolutely fucking insane, this dude just does not understand that the TV and PC versions don't need to be 1:1 functionality, why can't we have some things PC only, rather then they both just suck???, PS layout sucks on TV as well BTW >_>)
---------------

Next, SeaAnime came out. At the time it was basically just significantly worse Hayase, although i don't remember why. However I now see now it updated A LOT, so much so that while i don't remember what all my complaints were or what changed, but i can see deep in the UI customization menu (that is now quite extensive) that theres an option to use the legacy layout, so i'm guessing the entire app got a complete redesign and thats why i don't immediately remember what i disliked so much.

I see they even went overkill and added the ability for users to use custom CSS for UI. When i opened "Marketplace" (plugins search, nothing is for sale, not actually a market place) i was blown away with the support options.

I think one of the things that also stood out to me before was lack of MAL support, but i see support for MAL is now a plugin/extension (or whatever the fuck were calling the things in the "marketplace").

Okay thats a lot of glazing for SeaAnime, time for complaints.
(The forgivable / ignorable complaints)
- Calling your place to download Extensions / Plugins a "Marketplace" with a literal shopping basket for an icon is fucking stupid. Why are you implying users can BUY plugins? To be clear, it does not support the buying or selling of plugins. So why the fuck is this called a market? ???????
- Finding the "Marketplace" is unintuitive.

(The actually annoying stuff)
- Pressing back while a show is open, does not minimize / smallify / go back to the page before you opened the anime. For as much shit as i give Hayase on the regular, even it has a working back button. In SeaAnime, it works everywhere else, but not in a show. Please have a functioning back button like every other PC program.
- NONE of the video players have a right click menu. Please do not copy hayase's bad habits.
- Putting your mouse at the bottom middle and doing nothing does not make the mouse and UI disappear like every other video playing software in existence.
- Torrents auto select, and annoying often pick incorrectly. There is seemingly no setting to make it not do this. The "auto-select" "Setting toggle" that implies it turns this off when on an anime's page, is not actually a setting toggle and the moment you go to another anime's page it auto plays. (When people say vibe coded slop, non functioning basic settings like this is what they mean).
- From the home's continue watching page, there is no way to go to an anime's page. Clicking it force plays it with no option to click the name to go to page, and right clicking and selecting open page auto-triggers the auto-select because it can't actually be disabled and starts playing a show you had no intent on watching.

-----------------

So anyway, as far as i can tell, or last researched, there is still no basic anime streaming app that doesn't have tons of infuriating broken / unfinished parts of the app. It is STILL a better experience to just use nyaa then it is to use any of these. That said... you just don't know what you don't know. So, what options otherwise exist? Until now if i wanted something quickly i just sucked it up and used Hayase (It has MANY problems the dev refuses to fix, but SeaAnime making it easy to play the wrong episode and making you jump through hoops just to make sure it's actually playing the correct fucking episode / no back button is PAINFULLLL).

Developer Post HypeAnime — anime streaming site with a large library, looking for honest feedback

Thumbnail
gallery
23 Upvotes

I’ve been working on HypeAnime, an anime streaming site focused on providing a clean and easy-to-use experience with a large library of anime.

Some of the features currently available:

* MyAnimeList (MAL) / Jikan ID sync
* AniList sync
* Schedule sync with upcoming episodes
* Browse page with search, filters, and genre selection
* Top Anime section
* Season pages for discovering current and past seasonal anime
* Large anime library
* Site-wide search
* Episode-based comments
* Watchlist / My List
* Recently watched history
* Personalized anime recommendations
* Multiple themes and customization options
* Improved navigation and overall UI/UX
* Responsive design for desktop and mobile

The goal is to make it easy to discover anime, keep track of what you're watching, and manage your personal watchlist and history without making the interface feel cluttered.

I’d really appreciate honest feedback on the site — especially regarding the UI, navigation, performance, and features that could be improved.

Discussion Steaming on many pirate sites is horrible nowadays

0 Upvotes

So we all know that official anime streaming sites aren't the best, but many unofficial pirate sites are also falling victim too. Streams not loading, video quality dropping mid episode, sites not loading correctly, constant domain changes, etc. It's getting ridiculous. 10 years ago, this wasn't a major issue. You'd stick to a website, enjoy watching anime, and use it until it was taken down. Now, you have to use 5 or more different sites, and hope one of them was working properly. This is asinine.

Developer Post Meet Scryer - The media manager that understands Anime

25 Upvotes

Hello r/animepiracy

I'm the principal maintainer of Scryer, an open-source, self-hosted media management tool meant to replace the Arr stack. It combines sonarr/radarr/seerr/bazarr/prowlarr/unpackerr all into one powerful tool. Total downloads is well over 80k and over 700 active users today*.

I started this to build something that worked better for Anime than Sonarr and with the help of the wonderful community, it's really come a long way. It is now a tool that truly understands Anime.

How does Scryer handle Anime differently?

  1. Anime metadata integration (MAL, Anilist, Anidb)
    1. All coordinated through the amazing AniBridge data
  2. Filler / recap episodes and canon movies
    1. Sourced from a few different metadata sources and presented to you as information and also acquisition settings (e.g. "Ignore Filler")
  3. Season/cour mappings (S04E13 == S01E58)
    1. Scryer picks TVDB as its canonical season format, but understands different mappings and auto remaps for you
  4. Smarter release name parsing (Japanese, romanized, aliases, cour naming)
  5. Multi-season packs fully supported (and complete series/multi-episode)
  6. SeaDex/TRaSH integration for better release group scoring
    1. SeaDex rules are updated daily to keep them fresh
  7. More anime indexers than Sonarr
  8. Cast information, including dub cast
  9. Required audio language settings
    1. Instead of just trusting a "dual" named release, Scryer inspects the downloaded media file and rejects if there's not a required audio track
    2. Scryer also checks for other indexer metadata when available (like NzbGeek provides language hints) instead of relying solely on release names
  10. Subtitle management built in
  11. Auto download, timing correction, etc

I could go on and on about the improvements on Arr that Scryer brings, but i'll keep it focused on Anime for this community.

Current project status

Scryer is out of beta, yet still young software and bugs exist. We work hard to fix bugs in a timely manner. It's been scale tested to libraries of over 100k files and passed every single possible security test that can be thrown at it.

What started as a solo project has grown into a small team of maintainers and a great community. The maintainers have a mixed background between a couple software engineers and a game designer who helps us keep the UI on target. I know in this day and age, it can be overwhelming with how many apps are dropping every day.

One rough edge for folks is that Scryer still uses the TVDB season numbering. Even though it maps release names and renames properly, if you're using other external anime tooling, they may disagree with season/episode number. This will eventually be fixed in the future by allowing you to choose numbering schemes per show, but for now this is the state.

Roadmap

There's some really cool stuff coming soon, including lifecycle management (think Maintainerr, "delete and unmonitor watched titles", "transcode to av1 for archival after i watch a remux") and request based rules ("auto approve requests from John when they request something for 30 days or less")

List integration (MAL, AniList, SIMKL) is in active development.

I'll be around to answer any questions in the comments. You can checkout the tool on:

AI Disclosure

AI assistance is used in developing Scryer. Everything is guided by experienced software engineers. You can find the full policy we use here: https://www.scryer.media/ai/

\Active User Counts*

Scryer uses a hosted metadata gateway, much like Sonarr's skyhook; I only have rough estimate numbers from that. Scryer is privacy first, there are no accounts or user tracking. https://www.scryer.media/privacy/

Question Looking for an anime site/app that supports English Dub with Arabic Subtitles concurrently

0 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for a site or app (Android/Web) that allows playing anime with English audio (Dub) combined with Arabic subtitles.

What I've tried so far:

Checked standard streaming platforms and popular sites, but most only pair Arabic subtitles with the original Japanese audio.

Tried tools like Aniyomi/Stremio with various extensions, but struggling to find sources that allow dual audio/sub track overriding for this specific combination.

Does anyone know a specific extension, media player (like MPV with custom external subs), or site that supports this setup properly?

Thanks!

Question To anyone using arr stacks

4 Upvotes

Do you just manually download OVAs? Like Sonarr just cannot find them. I know this is because it treats specials as "season 0" which is something most sources don't apply to the title or information when they're getting uploaded, especially for anime. I've looked into Shokofin a bit, but it seems more geared towards existing downloads and seems like it would actually conflict with Sonarr and create an infinite download loop. I wish Sonarr would utilize AnimeDB as well as TVDB but it looks like they have no plans at all for this. So, am I just manually downloading OVAs or is there a trick I'm missing?

Drama The Nekkoto App and The management

3 Upvotes

Don't know how many of you are aware of the closed-access anime app called Nekkoto. I am a member, from when they used to have invitation access. I still am. I do appreciate the pirated animes, and that's my go-to app when the anime isn't available on Crunchyroll or other streaming platforms.

After joining their discord servers though, I discovered that the discord mods act like they're some billion-dollar CEOs or some sorts. Extremely rude, arrogant and pathetic, as if their real lives are inherently miserable and discord is the only place they can let loose on. They seem incapable of normal human interactions.

I keep seeing memes about these crap discord mods and Nekkoto discord is where it really became very clear why.

Developer Post I built AniLove a fast, ad-free custom anime streaming app with built-in accounts and watch history and watchlist.

0 Upvotes

Hey everyone! I wanted to share a project I've been working on called AniLove (https://www.anilove.bond/)
The goal was to build a clean, fast, and responsive streaming web application without the invasive popups and ads usually found on web media tools.
Features built so far:
Zero Ads: Clean interface with uninterrupted playback.
Account System: Users can sign up/login to keep track of their custom watchlist.
Watch History: Automatically logs episode progress so you never lose your place.
Dual Audio & Multi-Server: Built in sub/dub switching with fallback server options for fast loading.
Would love for you guys to check out the UI/performance and drop any feedback or feature requests!
Please let me know if this draft looks good to post or if you'd like me to modify any part of it. Thanks again for your time!
