Why is it so hard for female lifters to get seperation between arms and shoulders, unlike male lifters?

Is it because of less lean muscle mass? Or higher body fat percentage? I saw so many women/non binary/queer people, and even pre transition trans men who work their ass off for years, spamming upper workout like crazy, have huge strength, but not many of them have noticably triceps and shoulders separation. Vascularity too. Of course there are many examples, but I think you get what I mean :D can someone please help me explain why? Thank you so much!

Keep glutes engaged during eccentric / lowering phase of deadlift?

• Upvotes

I love RDLs and can activate my glutes (as well as back and hamstrings) during the concentric phase / upward pull.

As soon as my glutes start to lengthen I don’t feel them at all, which suggests to me that I’m not engaging them properly during the eccentric phase.

It’s not the same for other exercises. If I’m doing heavy hip thrusts I feel the glute burn, and lunges I can get it in the lower glute / upper hamstring junction. Haven’t been able to get it on deadlifts, when I’d love to, both as glute work and as back protection.

Advice?

Activity Between Sets

About 6 weeks in to a regular routine at the gym, 4x/week, and it’s going generally well! I have started getting bored during my breaks between sets. What do you generally do?
My sister, who’s been a gym-goer for some time says she does abs between sets mostly to stay efficient. Just seeing if anyone else does that or what other recommendations are. I don’t want the rest time to kill my motivation!

TIA!

How come I can overhead press 75+ pounds but my arms get tired blow drying my hair?

Sounds like a joke (and I’ll admit it’s funny) but I realized I am seeking functional strength exercises to build up my hair dryer tolerance 😅

Silly but Functional Benefits of Lifting

I am interested to hear what others have noticed has become unintentionally easier since lifting. We all know the health/physique/mindset benefits of weight training, but what have been some silly small changes that you have noticed? For me, it has been lifting a full suitcase, cleaning a crockpot (those F’ers are heavy!), and carrying a case of beer. How about you?

Beginner cyclist

Female student here. The past two years I’ve been living a sedentary lifestyle as schools been my priority. As of recently, I’ve definitely felt the effect this has had on my body and I’m determined to get my health and confidence back.

I’m planning to do indoor cycling 3 times a week, 1 full body circuit workout class and a plank everyday. I’m particularly interested to know what people’s thoughts are for cycling or if they have any advice in general before starting. Thanks!

Tips for getting out of a funk?

(For context, I'm 39) For probably the last month or so I have been in a major exercise funk. Nothing is very enjoyable and my usual tricks for getting out of a funk have not been working (bribing myself with a TV show while working out, doing just 10 minutes of yoga a day, etc.). I've tried structure and no structure. For my schedule, working out in the morning before work is generally best, but I am so tired of getting up early. I have Peloton and I would really like to not spend more money on a different subscription, but maybe that's what I need to do? I don't have any specific goals other than just aging well and being able to carry my 5 year old for as long as I can. I would love some tips and suggestions!

training time spent

realistically how many hours do you spend on training or is it just me? i’ve been training for 10 years and now i have changed my routine to more minimal and functional but still i feel like it does consume at least 4-5 hours a day.

at least 2-2.5 hours to train properly including warmup and stretching. my training really just focuses on 2 compound movements and 2-3 isolations.

plus another 1.5-2 hours for 10k steps/running. really this is just training, not to mention cooking/eating but it doesn’t really bother me that much.

am i doing too much or is it standard? i feel like if i dont do this much im not doing enough 😳

Cardio I can do in a walking boot?

Looking for ideas for exercises I can do in a walking boot, particularly cardio, to help get my energy out. Walking and running are usually my outlet for managing anxiety, and those are off the table for the next 6 weeks.

I am able to do certain ab workouts and was able to do upper body strength training at the gym, so I think I'm covered there. I just want to get my heart pumping.

Pilates Question: How long did it take you to successfully do the Magician series on Tower?

Sorry, I would ask in r/pilates but I still can’t post there yet and I didn’t see any past posts talking about it so I hope this is allowed.

For those who have been doing pilates for a while, how long did it take you to do Magician successfully? I’ve been doing pilates (mat, reformer, tower, etc.) consistently since March but the Magician seems like the most impossible thing to me! I’ve watched videos on how to do it but it still evades me. My instructor told me to practice hollow body holds to get better and I am working on adding core to my strength training workouts more regularly. I appreciate any response :)

Lift to body weight ratio if a good chunk of your body weight is fat?

I weight like 100kg (220lbs), am 167cm (5'6) tall, and have been lifting for a little over two years. I had a DEXA scan a year ago and my lean mass was 52kg (116lbs). I'm currently on a GLP-1 and my goal weight is around 75kg (165lbs).

Right now my three rep max for back squat is 75kg (165lbs) and my one rep max for RDL is 100kg (220lbs), for bench press it's 50kg (110lbs), and for overhead press it's 30kg (66lbs). On pure weight alone, I feel like these are all pretty respectable however as a ratio of my body weight, they're low for how long I've been lifting. I've been consistently going to the gym 2x-3x a week and I really do feel like I'm putting in effort and pushing myself when I'm there. Comparison is the thief of joy and everything however I'm starting to get frustrated because apparently these body weight milestones are low hanging fruit and something you should hit within a couple months and obviously this has not happened for me. More to the point, I genuinely think I would hurt myself if I tried to back squat my body weight even though this apparently should be "easy."

Do I actually just need to try harder or am I allowed to take my body weight ratio with a grain of salt because so much of my weight is fat?

What are some goals, unrelated to weight or the size/shape of your body, that you set for this year and are making good progress on?

I'll go first - I had two goals for this year.

Number one was to find some kind of movement that I can do every day to improve general fitness. Tried running in the late winter and spring, was able to find time and motivation to do it 3x/week and liked how I felt, but hated actually doing it. Then some family stuff happened, was unable to run the whole month of May, and didn't get back into it.

However, in August I purchased a membership at a local pool and have been swimming laps 3-5 days every week and loving it! I swam in high school and a little into college which was a long time ago but the muscle memory is still there and the fitness is returning. I feel great, physically and mentally.

Number two was a handstand or headstand, by the end of the year. Yesterday I attempted for the first time in a while and was able to get a stable handstand inside of a doorway. Haven't been able to do that in probably 10 years or more!

What about all of you? Let's celebrate progress together!
