SOLVED Updated rules post

Hi everyone, there have been some rule changes since the last post, so here is an updated post. I have taken the section about helpful points to consider when writing a post from the last rules post, with some minor edits.

PLEASE FOLLOW THE RULES.

  1. Post titles must have at least one book detail.
  2. Solved posts should be marked as solved. You can flair your own post as solved by commenting "solved solved solved" on the post. If you see someone else's post is not flaired as solved, you can report it and a moderator will flair it.
  3. A post cannot have more than one book/series. To clarify, multiple books from the same series are allowed to be in the same post. Multiple short stories from the same book are also allowed in the same post. If they're not part of the same book or series, they must be in separate posts.
  4. Posts should be on topic. Posts must be looking for a specific book/series/story that you want to find. Posts looking for general reading suggestions, links to read books you already know the title and author of, or general unrelated content will be removed.
  5. Do not offer money/favors to solve posts. You're welcome to gild or otherwise award a comment after your post is solved, but you can't offer it before the post is solved.
  6. Be respectful.
  7. Always check AI-generated answers against another source before submitting them. We strongly prefer that users avoid AI answers in general, as they almost always match a description to an unrelated or nonexistent title.

Please consider these points when writing your /r/whatsthatbook post:

Your Post Title

Briefly the book, not your situation. Avoid titles like "Help, I can't remember this book..." or "I read this when I was a kid..." or "I NEED HELP"

Include the overall genre of the book in your post title, such as "romance novel" or "scifi"

Posts with vague titles will be removed. The general age range the book is meant for and year are not specific enough on their own. For example, we will remove a post titled "Children's book from 2000s." We will not remove a post titled "Children's sci-fi novel from 2000s." We prefer titles like "Children's sci-fi novel from 2000s about kid whose cousin invents a new telescope and discovers aliens."

The Book

Fiction or non-fiction?

Describe the plot.

Describe notable characters.

What genre is it?

Physically describe the book -- Hardcover/paperback? Book cover color?

When was it set?

How long was the book?

Anything notable about the original language? Did you read it English? If not, what language?

... And You

When (what year) did you read it?

How old were you when you read it? Was it age appropriate?

Where did you get the book? School library, book fair, book store selling new and/or used books, flea market, borrowed from a friend, given as a gift from X person who is about Y age, or from an online store?

Was it new when you read it?

What age range was it for?

Other notes:

We allow posts about short stories, poems, fanfiction, etc. on this subreddit.

If you want to post a picture of a page you found, upload it to imgur and put the link in a post. Please include at least one detail about the events or characters on the page in your title.

UNSOLVED Book involving theatre people (playwright?), takes place in one day, in a cottage in the UK

• Upvotes

About 10-15 years ago I read a novel. The entire story took place in one day. The protagonist worked in theatre (playwright, maybe?) and, for a reason I don't recall, was staying alone in a house/cottage belonging to someone she had worked with. The homeowner may have been an actress (or another theatre professional?) who was away working.

Although I'm not 100% sure, I recall the book having a pale yellow cover, and it may have won or been nominated for some sort of award.

I'd be so happy to be able to rediscover this novel!

edited to add: The novel is set in the UK.

UNSOLVED Kids with mental powers

• Upvotes

I swear I remember reading a book about these kids that got taken away or were sent to a special school because they had mental powers or something like that. And I think one of the main characters was a boy and he like breaks out of the school I think. I’m also remember a green gem, like maybe an emerald. Maybe that was on the cover.

I’m also almost 100% positive that I read this in elementary school but I don’t know anyone else who remembers it.

Anybody have any ideas??

Edit: I live in the US, this was in Texas specifically. And it was somewhere around 1995ish. I don’t believe it was required reading. I read the usual in high school, The Pearl, The Hatchet, Animal Farm and so on. This book was definitely before that.

It was also a chapter book and I do not recall any illustrations. But for some reason in my head I picture a mostly red cover and something green, like the gem I talked about before. I know that doesn’t really mean anything because books can have any number of different covers.

SOLVED Romance book about a bookshop owner with a magical book that “writes” her friend back to Regency era to marry a Duke

I read this about 10 years ago.

The main characters Dad dies unexpectedly just before she turns 16 (or maybe it was 17).

Years later she owns and runs Dad’s bookstore and sorts through an old box that belonged to Dad and finds a wrapped gift for her 16th birthday for her. Her dad wrote that this was a family heirloom passed to the first child each generation (when they turn 16 or 17) and is a magical book and stuff she writes comes true!
Little things she writes in there actually happen!

She writes about the perfect boyfriend for her and he comes in the bookshop! She ends up marrying him and having a baby!

Her best friend is lonesome since her husband passed a few years before and she has no other family. This friend loves the regency era and is finishing her masters degree at U of Virginia in English literature and history. This friend asks her to write her a Duke from the regency era with all of her requirements, physical, personality traits, etc.

They throw a Regency themed costume party on New Year’s Eve and it is written that the Duke shows up in the storage room and sees the friend and is confused but instantly attracted to her (as it’s written in the magical book), the confusion is from the sounds outside (cars going by) and she grabs his hand and takes him back to the storage room and ends up on his English property 200 years in the past.

The Duke initially introduces her as a distant cousin, whose luggage got lost, and they build a life together. She ends up meeting Jane Austen and advising her Duke husband on what to invest their money in. He was already interested in new inventions. One scene he needs stitches and she makes sure the doctor sterilizes the needle and does not allow bloodletting.

This is all in 1 or 2 books. Then in the next book, the Dukes sister is shamed after kissing a man at a ball and is miserable. The friend (Dukes wife) writes her bookseller friend through her attorney (leaving instructions for her attorney’s grandson to mail the letter in the future) and the sister goes to the same rock she arrived near at a specific time and date and the sister time travels to modern day and experiences electricity and driving and living alone!

I don’t remember the title or author but would love to read it again!

UNSOLVED DESPERATE to find a book series, been looking FOR YEARS and nobody seemed to remember it... books about a girl with special powers that lives with her aunts? And fights other witches. The books have colorful thin inserts that look like old book

it's a series of books about a girl with special powers, like witchy powers. I think 6 or 8 books, every book was really colorful and cute on the outside. the thing I remember most is that inside each book there was an insert, like a thinner little book bound in The end or beginning. it had different, glossier, more colorful pages and it was made to look like an old book with pictures and additional information about witche’s family or other things. it was related to the book but it wasn't part of the story. the first chapter of the first book opens with birds (geese or swans i think) flying in the sky and gossiping about what's new in the witch world.

I read them around 2012–2016 in Russian or Ukrainian, but I'm pretty sure it was translated from another language (maybe German or Swedish?)

can’t remebet any names at all :((. The books are about the life of young witch and she often fights with bad witches over some old book (I think). In the last book there is an ice or snow kingdom that might be on the cover. I read a few of them electronically but others I had hard copies, my mom gave them away and I’m desperately trying to remember other details. I think it’s meant for kids 8-13 by the way in was written. Also she lived with her aunts or female relatives that might’ve been hairdressers, but it’s all really vague in my memory…

SOLVED Dystopian boarding school for girls with overnight hypnosis tracks and attractiveness rankings

I can't remember a whole lot about this book, just some scattered plot points, so here goes:

-It's a boarding school for girls in a standard, handmaids tale-ish society.

-Every night, mantras are piped into their rooms as they sleep, though I can't remember what they say.

-Theres a throwaway line about the bedrooms being kept uncomfortably warm? I think?

-Every morning, the girls are rated on their attractiveness, and I think the protagonist is either #1 or #2 in her class.

-The girls are being raised with the intention of marrying them off? To wealthy powerful people.

-One of the girls is scouted specially by a Very Powerful Man. The plot revolves around her attempts to not let this happen.

-unscouted girls are aged out, and taken downstairs to have their uteruses removed and become teachers at the same school

-I think there's themes of bulimia? Or at least one paragraph about it.

I think I read it around 2014-2015, but I don't remember it being new at the time.

Thank you for any insights at all!

SOLVED teen/tween book about a boy who's mom dies, but his sister finds a secret door to the attic where there's an alternate universe where their mom is alive in it

pretty sure the boy's name was charlie, but might be mistaken. i remember that his sister was younger than him, and he was very protective of her. it was sort of a mystery book at first, then kind of lightly horror as we find out that the mom in this alternate universe is stealing/eating their memories? i would have read it around 2012-2019. that's all i can remember of it rn unfortunately :(

ETA: just remembered that the book cover had a kid holding a red balloon on it in a sort of watercolor-y style?

UNSOLVED Children’s Poem Book from 1980s-1990s

Im looking for a book I had as a child, it had a bunch of different poems in it and whimsical illustrations to go with them, I can only remember one poem that was featured in the book and it was Jellicle Cats by TS Elliot, but he did not write this book. The illustration to go with his poem were cats playing with a ball of yarn down the side of the page. The book was a tannish color and I think there was a drawing of a girl with long hair on the front doing something playful? If I remember correctly there’s one poem about an old couple who would do silly things to each other or something like that. I just wanna buy it to read to my kids, please help!

SOLVED Kid wants a Mohair Suit for the holiday

We had a book in my house when I was a kid and I don't know how it came to our possession. The story is a Jewish mom and her son go shopping for a new suit for Yom Kippur??. They leave at the crack of dawn collecting other boys from the neighborhood so they could all go buy new suits. She knew they had to be the first customers of the morning according to shopkeepers' superstition. Her son can't take his eyes off an expensive blue mohair suit.

I've tried web searches off and on but most Jewish children's stories on lists are from recent years and this book was old, approx from the 50s or 60s with the setting being maybe even pre WWII.

Thank you for any help.

UNSOLVED Crime Thriller Romance circa 2013

Ok so I am looking for this book I read on Kindle in 2013-2014. It might have been marketed as YA, but it was definitely not for children.

It was a crime thriller romance book focused on a woman who was on the run for potentially witnessing a crime? I remember something about her seeing a neighbor's garden and him burying something wrapped in a shower curtain, however, she also might have been the one who had the garden/buried something in it. I'm pretty sure she spent a lot of time tending to a garden since she didn't go into town often.

The MMC was a close neighbor, though they were in the mountains, so that's relative. He owned a dog and was either a federal agent or a cop. He frequently checked in on the FMC.

She gets attacked in her home at one point and severely choked out. I remember this because she was told to take a spoonful of honey every few hours (which is when I learned honey could be pretty useful).

I don't exactly remember the cover, but I think it was a view of the mountains. It might've had the standard "FMC/MMC standing close together" on it, but I am not certain.

I've tried looking for it every few years, but no longer have access to that Kindle account.

UNSOLVED Looking for a book about guy who moves into a haunted house.

This was an old horror novel

Hey ive been trying to find this book that I started reading in high-school but never finished. I just turned 18, and i remember being captivated by the cover and thats the big thing I remember. It was about a man who moved into an old house but alot of supernatural stuff happens to him. It was an old book. I read it in 2017 but it was an old book with yellow pages. It had alot of sex in it. But definitely wasn't considered an erotic novel.

The cover is like the big thing I remember because it was a man I think holding onto a light in fear. With a bunch of demon looking faces around him. That why i originally picked up the book because i remember the cover standing out. The ghost in the book started out as a older woman that slowly starts turning into a demon. I think it was around 500 pages. That's the best I got. If anyone needs anymore information please dont hesitate to ask. Ive been trying to find it for a while because I never got to finish it.

UNSOLVED Villain Traps People in a Vegetative State Where They Become Fixed on the Colour Green

I need help finding this graphic novel that I read in my childhood. Here is what I remember:

-I believe that I read the book sometime in the early-mid 2010s when I was maybe 8-11 in the school library.

-The villain hypnotizes their victims in some way that puts them in a vegetative state.

-While in this state, gazing upon anything the colour green fills the victim with joy. If there is nothing green for the victim to stare into, they become confused and anxious.

-I'm pretty sure the book is in primarily black and white except for a few panels that contain green to signify the hypnotism.

-Also, if I recall correctly, I think the villain's motives are altruistic in that they believe they are freeing the minds of the people they hypnotize, as just viewing green gives the victims fulfilment, and the villain wishes to hypnotize the whole world.

-The book was written for children, but I remember it really freaking me out when I was younger

-I remember very little about the main characters themselves, except that they were maybe young children around the ages of 12.

I know that this is not much to work with, but regardless, thank you all for any insights!

UNSOLVED Short Webcomic about Shapeshifting/Genderbending Mermaid

• Upvotes

It might have been on Webtoons, it was a short comic about a conversation between I think a sickly Victorian woman and a mermaid/merman. The mermaid would shift and change gender presentation every few panels, without comment or fanfare, and I think at some point near the end turned into a centaur, and then maybe Death? But that last detail might be wrong.

The mermaid had long black hair, and blacked out eyes. The webcomic was in black and white.

Sorry it's not a book, any guesses are appreciated!

UNSOLVED Children’s or Young adult book/series, read probably mid-80s, orphans(?) in an old house

For some reason I’ve been thinking of a few young adult books lately that I read ages ago. I managed to find one book/series on my own, but this one I don’t remember enough key details.

I read at least one of the books, and think it skewed toward young adult although it may have also been for older kids. There was at least a little girl, and may have been a boy as well. For some reason the name Penny is coming to mind, but that may be a complete red herring. They were novels, but of course may have been shorter than I remember.

The story I remember parts of involve the kids (I think) being in some old house. I seem to remember there may have been an inheritance involved, and people related to the deceased showing up. I also seem to remember the kids or at least one of them being held prisoner in a room and then tapping on pipes to get attention/send a message, but that may be me mixing it up with another story. Heck, the other details could be that as well - it’s really hazy.

I do also remember that the book was part of a series that I’d wanted to check out more of, but somehow never did beyond maybe one book. I remember reading about the kid(s) on some train, with some other children they may have met during the first book, and something happening to them. I just don’t remember if this was another book from the series I had, or if it was one of those previews that you get for the next book in the series at the end of the one you’re reading.

Thanks muchly to anyone who can figure this out!

UNSOLVED Kids book series featuring mechanical/steampunk animal-shaped vehicles

• Upvotes

So I’ve lately been thinking about a book series I read as a kid that had pretty detailed drawings of mechanical animals on each cover but I cannot for the life of me remember what it was called. I think the first book featured a mechanical gorilla? From what I recall it was about 9 or 10 books long, and the first book starts with a young boy(?) playing in their garden then going through some bushes and being transported into a jungle.

Any help in finding what this series or atleast what the title of the first book was would be greatly appreciated.

• Upvotes

Witch series, read ~2014-15, English. Heroine is a 30-something “loser” who has a bad breakup, then finds out she has magical powers that run in her family. Her car is named “Purple People Eater.” She moves to (I think) London, opens a bakery/shop for witches, and gets caught in a love triangle (one guy is named Sebastian). Main conflict: she’s a magical heir/important family member and others want to usurp her or her family. Probably part of a series.

UNSOLVED Sci-Fi Thriller where a juror faints in a chair to see memories. Pink cover with an IV stand.

Hey everyone, I'm trying to find an obscure indie sci-fi psychological thriller I bought off Amazon a few years ago for around thirty dollars. The title is super short, only one or two words max, and the cover is bright pink with a stark medical IV stand or blood bag on it.

The plot is about a unique justice system where a single juror is chosen through a special process. The juror sits in a machine chair, faints, and visually experiences the suspect's entire backstory to decide their guilt. In the second half, you see the horrific backstory of the suspect and his sister. Their parents used to be actors and directors, and they forced the family to act out different characters every single day. If the siblings ever broke character, the parents would brutally punish them with electrocution. The siblings eventually used incest as a coping mechanism to survive the abuse and decided to escape by planning a joint medication overdose. The sister died first, but when morning came, the parents caught them and called the police on the surviving brother before he could pass away, which is what leads to the trial.

Does anyone remember the title of this book? It's been driving me crazy!

UNSOLVED book where the main character gets sent to live with her grandmother and ends up babysitting for a neighbor and saves the kids from their father after an ice storm

I remember reading this book 5ish years ago where the main character gets sent to live with her grandmother because I believe her mother didnt/couldnt deal with her(?). also I remember something about her being told that her father was dead or missing but she ends up finding clues in her grandmother's house that leads her to find her dad, who was in jail. then towards the end of the book, shes babysitting for one of her grandmother's neighbors (overnight i believe) when the area is hit with freezing rain and everything ices over. in the morning, the kids dad shows up to take the kids but he had never been in their lives so the main character ends up being able to run away with the kids and saves them from the dad. I'm not entirely sure if this was a children's book but i remember it being at my school library I think? id really like to find it again because I remember really liking it!

SOLVED Looking for a paranormal graphic novel where a plot development involved a north Korean who could fly that was supposed to teach Kim Jong Un how to fly as well.

I read this graphic novel roughly ~4 years ago. It was about a teenage girl and her younger sister who lived near a supernatural contaminated zone. She would sneak into the zone to steal stuff for cash. During her exploits, she frequently ran into dangerous supernatural phenomenon. I want to say that the comic book was set in the US and that the art style had really bold color choices. At some point in the book we meet a North Korean character that can fly who's visiting America for a reason I don't quite remember. I do know he was supposed to eventually be able to teach the dictator how to fly.

Thank you!

UNSOLVED LF zombie apocalypse w simp ML

I have been trying to re-find this novel and because I can't remember the names, I'm not javing any luck.

It starts off with the female lead being reborn and in her apartment. The death flashback is her supposed upstairs neighbor and friend, plus boyfriend or guy that was pursuing her, were with her as they went to her estranged father's house to try and get supplies and he wouldn't give them any. Out of anger they killed her or just dont rescue her.

On rebirth she gets a space, stocks up, reinforces her home, kicks the friend and guy to the curb, etc. I remember too that she visits a friend of her moms for an item, I thought it was a spear head, and the woman feels sorry for her, but the FMLs father is powerful enough that the mothers friend doesn't want to help her too much.

After the apocalypse hits, she stays in the apartment for a bit to exact revenge on some other residents and to go on a few cost shopping sprees.

FML eventually leaves on a motorcycle after giving the building management guy the key to her apartment that has supplies, warning him to stay there otherwise he'll be killed in the garage with the others, once the attack is over then he should leave.

She's heading out to find a man who was really powerful in her last life, he has lightning powers, yes of course he was a CEO and super rich. He, the ML, we later find out, was on a blind date and his date left him to die when the zombies started popping up.

On her travel she saves a group at a gas station and 2 soldiers. She finds our ML in a mud puddle filled with mutated leeches, very weak and being tortured by two women. They dead. She rescues him, nurses him back to health and gets him to be her sidekick. What we also find out later is that he's a super simp for her. They get revenge on the person who put him in the swamp, a power tripping former park ranger turned earth bender, who was forcing men into sex for food because her ex was a jerk and she has issues.

At the point I got to she has no dog but picks up a mutated talking bird.

UNSOLVED Children’s “multi-book”?

This drives me nuts! This thicker book has multiple stories in it. Two I vividly remember were two cartoon stories about Mr. Pepper and tomato’s and then him painting his house rainbow.

There were other stories in it, but I can’t remember. I think some were even with real pictures. I miss this book! It was blue.

UNSOLVED A book fantasy i read around 2017-2020

From what I remember there was a female protagonist who in one of the books had her back tattooed with 2 dragon wings to symbolise her freedom. There may have been a character that lost an eye and struggled with judging distance, i however can’t recall if he was a major one or not. The book followed a large medieval conflict and probably had dragons in it. That’s all i can remember, i would really appreciate your help on this. I randomly remembered this at 1 in the morning a d have been braking my head over it for an hour😅

UNSOLVED A young adult crime? Or mystery novella

I read this book in school, I'm 22 and I probably read this between 11-15, so it was a book that was around in the 2010s. The protagonist was a teenage girl and she sneaks into this house and finds out something that's going on, then has to escape. The scene that is burnt into my memory is that she had to walk barefoot in the snow, and I think she counts her money at some point.

The main thing I have to go on is the cover was a shiny purple hardback and it was very short, around 100 pages.

I'm also from the UK if that helps, but I can't remember where the book was set, more just in case anyone else remembers it in their schools

Sorry if there isn't enough Information but this is killing me, thank you for everyone's time!
