Hi everyone,
I’m a researcher from Portugal working with cetaceans, and I’m involved in several research projects, including work on the Iberian orca population. I’ve had the opportunity to observe and study these animals firsthand, which has given me a close look at some of the behaviors and interactions that have attracted so much attention in recent years.
The situation surrounding the Iberian orcas is increasingly critical, and at the same time there is a huge amount of misinformation, speculation, and misconceptions circulating online. Some claims are based on misunderstandings of orca behavior, while others have been dramatized and/or repeated so often that they’re now treated as facts.
For that reason, I decided to make this post as an opportunity to share information from a scientific perspective, clarify what we actually know, and hopefully debunk some of the more common myths surrounding these interactions.
I’m happy to discuss the subject and answer questions where I can, while also being clear about what is established by research and what remains uncertain.

This video is a visualization of a dataset of 16,000+ whale calls observed and mapped in Monterey Bay from October 28 to November 9, 2025. These 13 days are compressed here into about 4 minutes, including slow-downs during which you can hear the observed sounds from various species. This is an example of the use of a new tool; a Localizing Passive Acoustic Monitoring (L-PAM) system called SonarPoint. While underwater acoustic tracking has long been practiced on fixed, cabled tracking ranges operated by the U.S. Navy and others, SonarPoint is compact and wireless, consisting of a set of short (~10m) seafloor mounted moorings that are recovered via an integrated acoustic release. In our most recent deployment called LMR 2, we deployed and calibrated/surveyed a seven-mooring system 25 miles from shore in water depth from 500m to 1450m over an 11 hour workday port-to-port. Recovery took about 9.5 hours. The maximum persistence of this system with continuous recording is about 14 months, supporting full year observation of cetaceans in remote locations. A system consisting of an inner array of five moorings surrounded by an outer array of six moorings will monitor an area of about 800 square km. This work is sponsored by the U.S. Navy NAVFAC Living Marine Resources (LMR) program under contract N39430-22-C-2428 and operations in the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary were conducted under permit MBNMS-2024-033.

Here's a compilation video from our OBI Whale University field trip for the class called "Fluking around with Humpbacks". We ventured out west to the Strait of Juan de Fuca - way west nearly to Sombrio, British Columbia. Little did we know we would find a "herd" of literally hundreds of humpback whales spread out as far and wide as the eye could see!
This video doesn't do the encounter justice but it's our best attempt to share what we saw.
Hope you enjoy!

Conservation groups, local officials, and the Eastport City Council are actively fighting to stop the proposed subsea AI data center in Maine's right whale waters. These waters, are home to many marine animals, as well as the breeding ground for the endangered right whales. The proposed 27 or 400 acre subsea data center planned for development could destroy the habitat including the right whale breading ground, and raise the temperature of the waters in the Bay of Fundy, the area planned for development.
All you need to do to show your support is give your first and last name, and an email address. Fundraising is encouraged but optional.
Help us protect the Bay of Fundy in Maine from the footprints of big tech, and sign this petition today. The deadline is October 19th.

One jump before recording felt like his tail came out of the water, massive jump that sounded like a cannon. This one was good too.

October continues to provide amazing whale watching in Monterey Bay. We had three Humpbacks hold us hostage circling the boat for almost 45 minutes twice today. We found them on our first trip, then found them about a mile away on the second. Stopping 300ft away from a whale then seeing it turn towards you to come check you out is an amazing experience. These whales sprayed us with blow, splashed with their tails and spy hopped to look us in the eye. It was incredible.

In 1865, a young blue whale beached on the rocks of Askim Bay, not far from Göteborg. In those heady days, beached whales were not generally rescued, but slaughtered, and such was the fate of this one.
The Malm Whale spent many years traveling around Europe, inviting the curious in for a chance to experience Jonah's fate, before finally making its home at the Göteborg Natural History Museum, where it still sits today.

I thought this subreddit might enjoy this whale sculpture in Salt Lake City, Utah that’s been a local obsession since it was installed in 2022. Every few years a new artists paints the whale and there was an event today to celebrate the second design. There were food trucks, a costume contest, vendors, and other fun activities.
Local residents playfully say, “All hail the whale” and ask the whale to bring lots of rain and snow.
The first photo is the new design and the second photo is the original design. The woman standing on stage in the first photo is the artist, Jiyoun Lee-Lodge. Stephen Kessler was the original artist.

Check it out I got a picture of this wooden sperm whale that is located in the kitchen in the family dwelling house in Myrtle Beach. However it looks like a sperm whale and it's a wood carving that is made of wood.
