Announcement Sub Changes

Hello all, we wanted to let you know that there are some new mods helping to run this sub now. Our goal is to work together to make sure that this sub always reflects the values of the West Sacramento community.

With that in mind, we are updating our settings to remove any posts/comments from accounts that have negative karma. We believe this will help to keep our discussions more thoughtful and neighborly.

Beyond that, we're hoping to get your feedback on what you like about this sub, what you don't like, and what changes you might suggest. Please give us your opinions in the comments.

Thanks in advance!

Our City Is the PF location open?

Anyone know if the Planet Fitness is open? As people had to leave yesterday as what appeared to be a possible fire.

Our City 20 years since Measure H, I and L failed to bring SMUD over to Yolo. Will we ever have this opportunity again?

I think we’re all in agreement that PG&E sucks and also their reputation is worse than it was 20 years ago (fires, bailouts for CEOs).

Times have changed and people are fed up with nonsense. Are folks motivated to push PG&E out once and for all?

Our City WM yard bulk pick up

Does Waste Management not care about serving the residents of West Sac? I had a scheduled bulk pickup up for yard waste, tree limbs within their standard size. They came by, took pictures, talked on the phone, and left without anything being removed. They literally could have picked up the limbs and put them in the truck during the time they took to dawdle and presumably complain to their boss. I put them in small bundled piles to be easily picked up as instructed.

When I lived in Sacramento county, all we had to do was leave a big pile in front of the house and they would come by with a tractor to pick it up. I guess I thought it would be the same here, but no, it was just an extra guy and a regular trash truck.

How is West Sacramento supposed to get rid of bulk yard trimmings if WM doesn't service their customers?

Our City Buy Nothing West Sac Group on Facebook

Just a wanted to recommend the Buy Nothing West Sac group on Facebook if you have stuff in decent condition that you want to get rid of for free.

I just listed a dozen items that didn't sell at my garage sale, included a single photo and my street address. Two thirds of it was gone within 30 minutes.

Saved me the trip to Goodwill (and the grumpy "We don't take that" hassles). And the stuff stays out of the landfill. And hopefully finds a good home here in West Sac.

Our City What happened to the grocery outlet employee with no teeth?

I know grocery outlet on harbor had an ownership change maybe a year ago and they’ve done a lot of the sounds since then. However, I’ve noticed all new staff and I’m wondering what happened? I’ve been in west sac for 10 years and the same employees were largely at that GO for all this time. I liked them. I had personal kind conversations with them.

In particular there was a white woman in her 50s or 60s, very thin and on the shorter side. She usually had short gray hair.

When I first moved to west sac I had just graduated from school and didn’t have a job. I scraped by on savings for awhile and then went on Cal Fresh. I was super embarrassed and don’t know how to use it but I needed it. She walked me through that and explained stuff to me. Explained I didn’t need to pay for bags on Cal Fresh. She made it ok and not a shameful thing.

She watched me evolve from an unemployed, very struggling person to a successful person with a good job- got married and had kids. She met my kids. She joked with them neither she nor the babies had teeth! Always lighthearted and smiling and working hard. What an evolution from the person selling plasma to get by to where I am now. She witnessed that and cheered for me every time I saw her. I always picked her lane! But I didn’t know her name and our interactions never went further than that. I often thought of writing her a card at the holidays or giving a tip but felt shy telling her our interactions had been so comforting to me.

I hope she is ok and that the new owners did not force out such a great employee. If anyone knows where she works now I’d love to get her that card this year.

Recommendations (Food, Housing, Places, Activities) Non-gas motor lawn services

Gas-powered leaf blowers and other lawn equipment are absolutely terrible for our health and the environment, are loud AF, and their sale is illegal in CA (since 2024).

So, where can I find decent lawn services in West Sac that don't use these rowdy death machines?

Local/independent/small businesses/BIPOC recommendations to the front, please!

To put this in perspective: California Air Resources Board reports that: "While commercial lawn and garden equipment are only 8% of the small off-road engine (SORE) population, they account for 20% of smog-forming emissions from SORE during the summer. [Additionally], total smog-forming emissions from SORE already exceed emissions from light-duty passenger cars in California."

Recommendations (Food, Housing, Places, Activities) Question on Flood Insurance

With the winter ahead looking to be pretty wet, I’m in the process of looking for flood insurance for my home here in West Sacramento.

I’m curious if anyone has any recommendations for reputable options other than FEMA?

Our City AT&T fiber install

I'm in the Bridgeway Islands area and we recently had AT&T come through and install fiber. We were oh-so-lucky to have our driveway drilled into and they covered over it with an ugly rectangle of black asphalt. I don't think that's an equivalent restoration especially since it sticks out like a sore thumb on my white concrete driveway.

Does anyone know if AT&T is planning on coming back around to replace the asphalt with concrete or will I need to file a complaint to get it restored correctly?

Dog parks recommended

What are some good dog parks in the area? I've had really bad experiences at Summerfield Park with certain dogs and owners so I am looking for other options. My dog was actually viciously attacked by a husky at Summerfield within the last year and I haven't been back.

Local Events Any local football?

My fiance is looking for any local football or flag football to get outside and build some community. We've looked all over online and I'm not finding much of anything. Does anyone know of any football leagues in or around Sac?

Local Events Looking for new members to join our film and production meet ups

Hey Sac citizens! I have a group of over 250 locals and each week some of us meet up for at least one film and then we go out for drinks and food after. We watch art house films, new releases, block busters and we also do marathons, like we just recently did ALL of the Twilight movies at the Crest Theater, so we have things for everyone. Some of us also work in media and we team up for projects. Two of our members found each other this past week and just worked on a new, local music video!

If you love movies, just want a movie buddy or want a career in film (whether you have any experience or not), come join us! It's a great way to meet friends, enjoy movies and be creative (movie nights and film production do not have to be mutually-exclusive, you can do one or both!).

The group has members of all ages from 20 to nearly 50, all sexual orientations, races, introverts, extroverts, production experts and people who have never even stepped foot on a film set; it is truly a group for everyone who enjoys film as a medium or as a career!

A couple of us are now in advanced pre-production for our first short film, which is super exciting!

I can also now proudly say, thanks to the mod team at r/Sacramento , we are now on the sidebar in the "other links" section! However, drop a comment here and I can guide you to the group to make it easier. See you there!

WTF West Sac??

Thumbnail gallery
0 Upvotes

That section between the Bridge District and the Branch Line Trail is already dangerous enough, and then they pull some shit like this, blocking the bike lane completely. There were cars coming past me so I couldn't go left into the street, so I went right onto what I thought was asphalt. But, they apparently dug up the asphalt recently, so it was sandy dirt, and I crashed my scooter.

THANK YOU to the folks who stopped to ask if I was ok!! Fortunately I have a good helmet, it did contact the pavement, but my head is ok. I'm a little scraped up and bleeding, but mostly just angry that the city would do this.

It was a good experience I went in and I asked the clerk if there’s a food pantry, he said yes and he said you just go to the left where the shelf are and pick whatever items you need. They also had paper bags above to store your items in.

Our City Is a fully online BLS card accepted anywhere out here in West Sacramento?

I need BLS for a medical assistant position, and I keep coming across these fully online courses where you just watch some videos, take a quiz, and they mail you a card. It honestly feels a little too easy. Would an employer around West Sacramento or the Sacramento area actually accept that, or would I just be wasting my money? Has anyone around Sac tried one of these and had it accepted by an employer?
