Announcements Discord Server!! and new safety rules (= bbye WhatsApp Groups)

We have created a Discord server!! WOOHOO, nerds!! woo-hoo. You can join it here: https://discord.gg/b8Z82SKz

Why have we done this?

  • Discord is a place where we can connect more easily with directly each other for "chatty" topics.
  • Discord lets people actually get to know each other and have more personable, meaningful interactions.
  • Discord lets you use a pseudonym or your real name -- just like Reddit. You choose. Your email and phone number remain private. This is an important privacy and security feature. You can even create multiple accounts, if you want/need.
  • Discord can be (auto)moderated -- and can be kept 100% under the mod-control of students and alums.
  • Discord lets you create channels for special interests or groups (e.g., we could create an "incoming freshmen" channel and a "house hunting" channel or whatever y’all want). This means we can stay central in one big group where we can help each other and collaborate, without getting disorganized or overwhelmed (i.e., you can get alerts for select channels on a server).

What does this change?

  • We will NO LONGER allow ANY WHATSAPP GROUP LINKS on the sub. At all. This is for everyone’s safety. We weren’t comfortable with facilitating Athena Studies' (and others') ability to reach vulnerable students, farm personal data, and create and dominate unsafe spaces. We cannot monitor (let alone mod) WhatsApp, but we *can* keep Discord safe. Discord will let you protect your privacy and we can use tools to keep spammers, scammers, trolls, etc. out.
  • We will no longer allow "Who is studying XYZ this year?" posts. This is a GREAT thing to do on Discord, where you can actually chat with people who respond. Consider starting a channel for your program, year, etc. if you want to meet people!!
  • Other “chatty” sorts of posts will also be removed and asked to move to the discord. We want to keep what we’re doing here appropriate for the medium. This will be an “emergent” filtering process that we can work on together as a community.
  • Not much else will change! Reddit is still Reddit. You do not have to join discord.

What is Discord NOT?

  • Discord is not a live-chat helpline to resolve uni admin drama issues. We are peers, not administration. All you can get here is perhaps peer support. Just like on Reddit.

Nah, I still want to use WhatsApp.

  • OK, you do you. You are welcome to share WhatsApp links privately or in-person on campus. A flyer with a QR code might be something to try (Although I’ve heard Athena Studies is also doing *exactly that*). Word of mouth is probably best.
  • We will nonetheless no longer facilitate sharing unsafe links in this community. That means no public WhatsApp links on Reddit. No exceptions. This is a hard boundary for the mods.

What about the Discord server that I already made?

  • We want to create a larger, centralized server that can serve as a starting point. If you have a thriving server for a sub-group of the UvA, we want to find a way to link it and/or work together (maybe create a channel that syncs with your #general? Something like that?)
  • If your server is kind of empty, we want to invite you to join the central server and switch from having your own server to having a channel and being part of a larger community
  • If you have another idea, let us know!

Courses and Programs Admissions, enrollment, and ChanceMe! mega-thread

All questions related to admissions, enrollment, etc go in this thread, please. More resources will be added to this post soon.

Edit: most undergrad and many master's programs at UvA do not have competitive admissions processes. If you qualify, you're in. If you can't pull it off, they'll fail you out. If you're worried about getting in you need to look up whether your program is competitive/selective and then look at the unique selection criteria for that program. https://www.uva.nl/en/education/admissions/bachelors/applying-for-a-selective-bachelors-programme.html

Edit 2: For 99% of the questions people post here, the contact point is the education desk: https://student.uva.nl/en/topics/education-desk

Courses and Programs Bachelor in Econometrics and Data Science

I just got conditionally accepted to the EDS bachelor for 2027 and I have some questions. How challenging is the math? I've gone over the courses and they don't seem too hard but I've heard of the high dropout rates. Im an A Level student predicted A* in Econ and A in math for context. In addition to this how difficult is the coding and data science aspect of the program? I have no prior experience and I know the program says none is required but how manageable is completing the degree starting from scratch. I think I could do it but im not sure im willing to spend all of my otherwise free time on studying if it were to come to that. Ive applied for EBE just in case but just wanna know these things before I make a decision.

The Future Bachelor Business Analytics

I just got accepted for a Bachelor in Business Analytics for the 2027 intake. I have multiple questions about the programme:

  1. I saw that there are quite a lot of math courses but it’s mainly probability theory and linear algebra - is the math coursework particularly challenging or will I be fine if I was good in math in high school?

  2. What are the career and master’s prospects like? UvA mainly advertises their own master programs but is there a chance of getting into UK masters such as LSE or Oxbridge afterwards or not?

Courses and Programs Should I drop out/change my BsC?

I feel very conflicted, ever since classes started I've been increasingly unsatisfied, to the point that I already dread going to class.

It's arguably a passion-driven kind of course (Cultural Studies) that doesn't have better employment opportunities in the long run. So I'm afraid I'll be wasting time and headaches more than anything else.

But also, I'm 20 and I'm turning 21 this year. This was actually my second try in an university, after dropping out 2 years ago. I'm scared I'll end up switching Bachelors 5 times until it's too late and I'll have nothing, so I'm considering staying just for the sake of getting over with it.

On the other hand again, I'm not doing as well as I thought I would (for a multitude of reasons) so there's a chance I might push myself through this and fail anyway.

Sorry if it sounds like a rant or rambling, I feel in distress with this situation. I'd appreciate any help or things to consider :)

International Things Passport/ID processing

Hi! I’m applying for bachelor’s at UvA and I uploaded my passport as one of the requirements. The thing is I uploaded it a few days ago and it still says that it’s pending approval. So I’m not sure if I did something wrong or is it usually this slow? Please let me know because if it’s a fault on my end I would like to reupload the passport picture asap :)

Courses and Programs Psychology Selection Test

Hi! I’m an A Level student applying to UvA for Psychology starting in 2027. For all those who took the selection test before - how was it? From what I’ve read from the past threads, I understand that we have to use information that we got from the lecture that we have to attend + some textbook chapters(?).

But what I want to know is that is it hard or easy? And does taking Psychology as an A Level subject help when understanding the content/completing the selection test? If anyone knows please answer because I’m really anxious about it 🙏

P.S. Do they also take into account our CV and grades after our selection test, or is our ranking/acceptance solely based on our scores?

Courses and Programs Opinions on sociology and political science bachelor courses at UVA

Hello everyone,

I just wanted to know your general experience if you have attended one of these courses at UVA. I'm interested in signing up to one of these courses next year as of right now I'm in highschool doing the I B. Generally how much work do you have? How interactive are the classes? How many students per class? Are the teachers good?

Thanks

Student Life and Culture Study spots with outlet sockets (laptop friendly cafes)

I’ve been looking for some study spots that accommodate the use of laptops. However, they either seem to be tourist traps or have limited duration. As most cafes either have a strict 1.5 hour max policy it’s very hard to find them.

Online I see everyone studying for hours with a nice beverage but whenever I search online it’s full of those overpriced small cafes that opened recently and just promote their matchas.

Please share your favorite spots! It’s very much appreciated thank you

Courses and Programs MSc with all lectures recorded

Hi!

I was trying to understand if some of the MSc in business/finance/quantitative finance have all lectures recorded.

I know it varies by professor, course and stuff like that, but some degrees have all the lectures recorded.

Any additional info?

International Things Part Time Jobs for Non-EU Students

Hi, I’m considering a Bachelor’s at Erasmus Rotterdam/UvA and wanted to ask about the real job market for non-EU international students.
Are employers normally willing to apply for a TWV for non-EU students, especially those who only speak English? How difficult is it to find a part-time job, is it realistic to consistently get ~16 hours/week, and roughly how much can students expect to earn per month?
Would especially appreciate experiences from non-EU students. Thanks!

Courses and Programs MSc Finance UvA

Hi,

I am wondering if all the classes in the MSc Finance are recorded. I know from ppl that for QUANTITATIVE FINANCE every class was recorded, so they were able to work in the meantime and then just sit exams.

Does it still work like that?

Thanks

Meetup/Borrel Looking for a language exchange partner Russian-Dutch

Hello there! I, Dutch M26 am looking for a native Russian speaker to join me in a language exchange, and hang out once or twice a week for an hour or so to practice speaking. The idea is we would meet up over a coffee or something, and speak half the time in Russian, whilst you give me pointers, half the time in Dutch, and I can do the same for you.

I took Russian as part of my BA in European Studies, have since further developed it and am now at approximately B2.2 level. But at this point I mostly need active exposure to progress, as my vocab is sometimes lacking and it can be difficult to come up with formulations on the spot (passive skills like listening and reading are way better). Ideally you would be at a similar level, but I suppose anything up from A2 can work.

A bit of background from my side: I am studying masters in International Law and Political Economy, and although totally not required, perhaps it would be nice to have somebody with similar interests. Hopefully you're interested!
