Hated Tropes (Hated)changing somenthing to be more "progressive" ends up being a bad thing

Now to be clear,i am not one of these "anti-woke" losers that complain some people exist, and i am also not the type to complain about changing somenthing in a new version or adaptation, however there are cases where it did ended up being a bad idea.

-In the anime of Cowboy Bebop there is the character Gren, despite being short lived the character is very memorable specially thanks to his tragic story.Basically his story was that he was a soldier from the titan war who was a great friend with Vicious(the main bad guy)after the war he was emprisioned thanks to Vicious who testified against him and he was forced to take a experimental drug that caused him hormonal problems, giving him a feminine appearence and even breasts.

In the Netflix live action, for some reasons they decided Gren was going to be non-binary,which wouldn't be a problem(some people believe he was gay in the anime)if it wasn't for the fact that they also removed all the nuances and complexities that made the character memorable and interesting, instead of a tragic war veteran that was betrayed and had his body changed against his will,Gren is just kinda there.

-The original Rugrats cartoon had the couple Betty and Howard,Betty was a big and masculine woman while Howard was a smaller and nervous man,it was a genuine interesting relationship that stood out from the other couples who were the standard straight couple.

In the new series however they replaced Howard with a woman named Trish, two things, first off why? What was the problem with having a woman being the stronger in a straight relationship?Second why does Hollywood seem to think that every tomboy or masculine woman is a lesbian?

Overall not the worst thing but it is jarring that they had a gender reverse roled that was progressive and decided that wasn't enough.

-Oh man, this one pisses me off the most so i am gonna have to break it down

So back in the late 80s and 90s there was this anime called Saint Seiya also knows as Knights of the zodiac,it tells the story of knights who fight for the Goddess Athena to protect earth, being divided in the golden, silver and bronze knights, the anime was a huge hit in latin america and Europe and while it floped in the US it still has a loyal fanbase.

Being a fan myself i can't recommend it enough, now granted the story does have a fair share of flaws, and that's because the author was honestly just making stuff up as he went along(also a lot of side characters are poorly used or even forgotten about)still it is a great story you should check out

But then a couple of years back Netflix got the rights and decided to a 3D reboot,in this reboot they decided to make the story more "american" to try to bring more american viewers, now i could go on and on a big rant about how that was a bad idea and the execution was so terrible that it made me want to strangle someone but this post is about one specific change.

So Saint Seiya has five main characters, those are Pegasus Seiya,Dragon Shiryu,Cygnus Hyoga,Phoenix Ikki and finally Andromeda Shun.

While the other four characters were the standard masculine and brute male characters who were always ready to throw punches,Shun was smaller, more sensitive and even feminine looking,a pacifist who didn't liked fighting, but don't mistake that for weakness because Shun was loyal to his friends and was extremely powerful.

Then Netflix decided to change Shun into a girl named Shaun.

So wait, you have a male character who goes against every male stereotype and you turn him into just another generic female character?

When asked about it,the showrunner Eugene Son said he made that change because there was no girl in the group and having a all boys group wouldn't be acceptable nowadays

First off that's not true because Athena was also part of the main cast, yeah she wasn't the fighting type but she still helped quite a lot in the story even saving the knights on several occasions, second if you wanted to add a girl to the main group why not use Marin or Shaina?Hell,if you were going to change the story anyway why not turn Seiya sister into a knight?

Thankfully this monstrosity was cancelled(so much for trying to bring more fans)

Lance Reddick as Albert Wesker, Netflix' Resident Evil.

Wesker was an eugenist, believer of a higher type of humans, almost nazi in his objectives (in part because they are inspired by a nazi-adjacent character, Alexia Ashford). Not that the fact he was white and blonde had anything to do with that, but he was the image of the greasy no-morals scientist.

While Reddick was a fantastic actor, having him playing Wesker of all people was insane.

And wesker is literally a byproduct of a white supremacists experiment

I think you can actually justify that, as white supremacists see non-whites as subhuman and wouldn’t mind using them as guinea pigs for potentially fatal experiments. This version of Wesker could have adopted the mentality of his torturers, but with a different group in mind. I will admit though, I am not a Resident Evil fan and not too deep in the lore, so I could still be missing the mark here and will accept any additional information on why this is a bad idea.

That could be a interesting approach, like Magneto being in the concetration camps, and his fear of being weak again made him adopt a extremely similar view to Nazis, so it could be clever writing a opressed character being indirectly influeced by their opressor in a tragedy.

but unfortunately it would be too clever for the guys that made him have a daughter based around billie ellish that is named Billie Wesker(even tho Wesker is a compound name and made her use a cyborg to sing a Billie ellish song for a grand reveal halfway through

No he wasn't. the children meant to be the new humanity were taken from all over the world, and judging by their names at least some of them were not white.

Yeah, any one of the thousands of scientists in that franchise and they go for Wesker was such an oddball choice.

The fact that they chose to make the series follow the game canon, and still wanted to use Wesker, and still race-swapped him is amazing.

This whole show is a study of what not to do with an IP.

At this point I think thats all netflix can do with adaptations is show others what not to do.

At least that one gave us some kickass scenes

No it did not

Yeah, it did. Kickass fight scenes, the tacticool reload sequence with the song drop. Cold Steel by power glove. Classic.

Vergil killing the soldiers was cool. The rabbit killing the soldiers as well. Dante vs the Devil hunters. Good fight scenes, story isn't good but the animation and fight scenes are amazing.

Looks like Blade

I thought it would talk about Blade. I thought "what's wrong with Blade?"

8

u/ViperKira 12h ago

It's not Blade, because there's only one Blade, and there will always be one Blade.

Seeing just that image, I would have loved to see Lance as Blade

Utterly moronic!

Albert Wesker is unique. He's a handsome, blonde, white, Teutonic, beefcake. He's a experiment, along with others. A chronic backstabber and constantly experimenting.

He does not work as black. Or any other race but blonde and white.

If nothing else. Why would you waste the chance to have a spectacular Teutonic magnificent bastard.

u/ViperKira 14h ago

They could easily make Reddick's character to be another Wesker. That'd fix the entire issue.

But no, it's an Albert clone because it must be an Albert clone.

6

u/Sasstellia 14h ago

True.

That there's many Weskers is perfect for making him one of many in the programme. He didn't have to be Albert Wesker.

Honestly even just having be another Wesker would work given the series did make it a point that there was more than one Wesker since it was a project Spencer (The head CEO of Umbrella for those that don’t know) had in terms of having a bunch of orphans with the surname “Wesker”

The biggest problem too was trying to tie into the video games while also being its own weird ass continuity that makes you have to consider how weird it is to have clones of Wesker in the first place be so fundamentally different from the original. It being closer to a CW show also doesn’t help.

It sounds like you are really really into white supremacists man

funnily enough, he was hands down the best part of the show lol

5

u/ViperKira 11h ago

I mean, it's Lance Reddick, bro would pull of a majestic performance even if he played a plant pot.

4

u/DicklePickleRises 11h ago

very true lol

Did you mean eugenicist?

1

u/The_Rainsnake_King 13h ago

idk why but the bigot race change into a black is becoming a thing and I hate it. the mcu just did this with William Metzger, turn a man that was pulling jim crow era hatred to the mutant into a black man still disgusting to me

Woah, where’d they do this in the MCU? I haven’t kept up with everything they’ve released lately, but I’d like to have a heads up if it’s a series I plan on watching. Absolutely wild change for them to make, honestly.

Oh crud, I didn’t even realize it when I saw it. Man, I really enjoyed the movie (ended up becoming my favorite of all time), but, YIKES, what were they thinking (were they thinking at all??)?!

In 2026 the top white supremacist figurehead in America is a gay mexican, every other Neo-Nazi MAGA account is ran by an Indian or Asian, and Clarence Thomas.

What I'm saying is, this casting is lowkey a hit. More Neo-Nazis should be played by black actors.

The world needs a trans black lesbian Hitler, it is time. /s
