Hated Tropes (Hated)changing somenthing to be more "progressive" ends up being a bad thing

Now to be clear,i am not one of these "anti-woke" losers that complain some people exist, and i am also not the type to complain about changing somenthing in a new version or adaptation, however there are cases where it did ended up being a bad idea.

-In the anime of Cowboy Bebop there is the character Gren, despite being short lived the character is very memorable specially thanks to his tragic story.Basically his story was that he was a soldier from the titan war who was a great friend with Vicious(the main bad guy)after the war he was emprisioned thanks to Vicious who testified against him and he was forced to take a experimental drug that caused him hormonal problems, giving him a feminine appearence and even breasts.

In the Netflix live action, for some reasons they decided Gren was going to be non-binary,which wouldn't be a problem(some people believe he was gay in the anime)if it wasn't for the fact that they also removed all the nuances and complexities that made the character memorable and interesting, instead of a tragic war veteran that was betrayed and had his body changed against his will,Gren is just kinda there.

-The original Rugrats cartoon had the couple Betty and Howard,Betty was a big and masculine woman while Howard was a smaller and nervous man,it was a genuine interesting relationship that stood out from the other couples who were the standard straight couple.

In the new series however they replaced Howard with a woman named Trish, two things, first off why? What was the problem with having a woman being the stronger in a straight relationship?Second why does Hollywood seem to think that every tomboy or masculine woman is a lesbian?

Overall not the worst thing but it is jarring that they had a gender reverse roled that was progressive and decided that wasn't enough.

-Oh man, this one pisses me off the most so i am gonna have to break it down

So back in the late 80s and 90s there was this anime called Saint Seiya also knows as Knights of the zodiac,it tells the story of knights who fight for the Goddess Athena to protect earth, being divided in the golden, silver and bronze knights, the anime was a huge hit in latin america and Europe and while it floped in the US it still has a loyal fanbase.

Being a fan myself i can't recommend it enough, now granted the story does have a fair share of flaws, and that's because the author was honestly just making stuff up as he went along(also a lot of side characters are poorly used or even forgotten about)still it is a great story you should check out

But then a couple of years back Netflix got the rights and decided to a 3D reboot,in this reboot they decided to make the story more "american" to try to bring more american viewers, now i could go on and on a big rant about how that was a bad idea and the execution was so terrible that it made me want to strangle someone but this post is about one specific change.

So Saint Seiya has five main characters, those are Pegasus Seiya,Dragon Shiryu,Cygnus Hyoga,Phoenix Ikki and finally Andromeda Shun.

While the other four characters were the standard masculine and brute male characters who were always ready to throw punches,Shun was smaller, more sensitive and even feminine looking,a pacifist who didn't liked fighting, but don't mistake that for weakness because Shun was loyal to his friends and was extremely powerful.

Then Netflix decided to change Shun into a girl named Shaun.

So wait, you have a male character who goes against every male stereotype and you turn him into just another generic female character?

When asked about it,the showrunner Eugene Son said he made that change because there was no girl in the group and having a all boys group wouldn't be acceptable nowadays

First off that's not true because Athena was also part of the main cast, yeah she wasn't the fighting type but she still helped quite a lot in the story even saving the knights on several occasions, second if you wanted to add a girl to the main group why not use Marin or Shaina?Hell,if you were going to change the story anyway why not turn Seiya sister into a knight?

Thankfully this monstrosity was cancelled(so much for trying to bring more fans)

"bullied by James, Peter, Sirius and Remus in the 1950s ish" correct on all other points but they were at school way later than that, Voldemort was a student in the 50s. James's Potter's generation was like. the 70s.

Wait I thought that Harry’s school year takes place from the 80’s to the 90’s. Snape’s from 50’s to 60’s and Tom’s 30’s to 40’s

Nah, Harry's first school year is like 1991, He was eleven, his parents were pretty young when they died so they finished a few years further back from 1980.

Huh, that’s interesting to know. That means by cursed child it’d be about 2005 or less? Harry Potter is significantly closer to the 21st century than I remember

u/AcanthaceaeNo948 16h ago

No it takes place in 2017.

DAMN

u/AcanthaceaeNo948 16h ago

I mean how were you expecting it to be 2005? Deathly hallow set in 1998.

My math is a little off twin 😔

Yeah, but is it really that unusual for an author whose fame has got a little out of hand, to come back with a sequel that creates so many plot holes that it's best to just pretend that the author was on drugs and didn't know what they were talking about?

To be fair, Harry Potter has almost always had some issues with plot holes, spells or potions or whatever. Getting introduced in later books that there's really no reason somebody wouldn't have thought of them and used them to solve an issue in an earlier book. That kind of stuff. But the play cranks that up to 11.

But wasn’t the chamber of a rented not opened for 50 years at that point? So riddle at least had to be 1942 when that flashback happened right?

Harry was born in 1980. He attended Hogwarts between 1991 and 1998

Harry's parents and Snape were born in 1960, their school years being 1971-1978

Tom Riddle actually attended Hogwarts in 40s. I don't remember if it was specified in which years exactly but at least part of his education seems to take place during WW2

10

u/Marinefan4000 16h ago

Tom was 1938-45

12

u/geek_of_nature 15h ago

Yeah he was specifically 71 when he died, the inverse of Harry being 17. So he was born in late 1926, went to Hogwarts from 38-45, and died in 98.

Which side note. The first Fantastic Beasts film is also set in 1926. So while everything there is going on, Merope Gaunt is most likely pregnant with Voldemort. And the third one is set in 1932, so in just 6 years Dumbledore will go from looking like Jude Law to Micharl Gambon for when he first met a young Tom Riddle.

You're correct on Tom Riddle, conflated "50 years ago" (from Chamber of Secrets) to 1950s in my head.

Do the books reference WW2? Been a while since I've read.

16

u/Enuya95 16h ago

They don't directly reference WW2. But. We know that Chamber of Secret was opened "50 years ago" - which wpuld place the event at 1942/43. And Tom was a student when he opened it, so...

Also, we learn that Frank Bryce - the gardener who served Tom Riddle Sr. and was latter a suspect in Riddle's murders - served in WW2, got injured there, released from service and shortly after started to work in Little Hangleton. Riddle family was murdered shortly after - Voldemort still was a student or right out of Hogwarts then.

So, he had to be a student during WW2

u/ifloops 15h ago

Do we learn about Frank Bryce serving from the books? If so, how is WW2 not directly mentioned?

5

u/Enuya95 15h ago

Yes, it was mentioned that he was injured during the war. I don't remember if it happened in 4th or 6th book but it definitely was there.

By "not mentioning  WW2 directly" I meant that it was not mentioned in relation to Voldemort and his education. Not that it was not mentioned at all. Though to be fair this mention of Frank Bryce's past seems to be the sole instance where WW2 is mentioned

1

u/ifloops 15h ago

Ah, that makes perfect sense. Cheers

The books don't reference it but one of the fantastic beasts movie does

u/Hayterfan 17h ago

So Snape was held back for 20 years?

He was a student so long they just made him a teacher.

191

u/IrishLad-1194 17h ago

Nah, canonically Snape's like... 31 in Philosopher's stone lol but Alan Rickman was way too good a casting choice.

37

u/Purplebatman 16h ago

He actually doesn’t look too bad for 30s in the context of the late 80s/early 90s (when HP was written) lol

6

u/VulkanHestan321 14h ago

So harry's parents were 20ish when he was born?

27

u/ChuckCarmichael 14h ago edited 13h ago

In the books, Harry's parents were born in 1960 and died in 1981, so they were 21. The first book is set in 1991, so Snape would've been 31.

But because the author really wanted to see Alan Rickman cast as Snape, who was quite a bit older than 31 at the time of filming the first movie, they had to age up all the Marauders by ~25 years for the timeline to still make sense.

According to the books Petunia, Vernon, and the OG order of the Phoenix are all between 30 and 35 in the first book. They made everyone look close to 50 to get the aesthetic they wanted for the movie

The year it takes place never actually matter in this story.

It could take place whenever. There’s a single scene in a single book that gives a date. It’s never brought up again.

Claiming this is an issue in your own racist mind is another insane hoop yall are jumping through.

31

u/IrishLad-1194 16h ago

"Claiming this is an issue in your own racist mind" All I'm doing is correcting a statement on the timescale. piss off.

-20

u/CivilChampionship810 16h ago

Just read the insane comments people have about black snape. I’m done tolerating this bullshit

25

u/IrishLad-1194 16h ago

then direct them at the people actually saying it? as opposed to me?

17

u/Expert-Yam6577 16h ago

You're not even going off on the right person? What's the point then?

10

u/RP_Throwaway3 16h ago

They don't have a point. They're just virtue signaling.

-6

u/CivilChampionship810 16h ago

I’ll go off at the right people then
