Hated Tropes (Hated Trope) "Kind" slave owners

Speaking as an American who has studied the civil war all throughout my school years, this trope infuriates me to no end. There is no such thing as a kind slave master because slavery itself is cruel and inhumane. PEOPLE ARE NOT PROPERTY!

Naofumi (Shield Hero): Prime example of this trope. He enslaves multiple (underage) girls and an whole village and the fans still say he's a hero.

Rudeus (Jobless Reincarnation): As if being a pedo wasn't bad enough he had to buy a slave in season 2. Worse is that people still defend his actions.

Song of The South (Disney): Possibly the OG example of this trope. And the reason why Disney will never release it again.

Do you think they saw what their grandparents were doing back in the day and was like "I need to walk the path my ancestors walked by making slave porn manga"

Are you crazy?

Most Japanese don't even know about the Comfort Woman. Those who heard of it consider it Anti-Japanese propaganda.

There is simply an intersection between the past and present Japanese. Both are used to conform to others expectations. Many societies do, but Japanese are among the most collectivist and non-confrontational.

So the appeal to suddenly have your own needs and desires run wild and other conforming to it, is the ultimate power and freedom fantasy to them.

I'm going to take a shot in the dark and assume you're a westerner with that kind of response.

The unfortunate truth is that Japan got a big pass when it came to nipping the racist roots of nationalism post WWII. Fast forward almost a century later, and Japan's enormous economic influence in the region has led to historical revisionism that building empires like the Greater East Asian Co-Prosperity Sphere was what all the cool kids were doing back then and Imperial Japan would have totally treated all of their ignorant savage neighbors better if they hadn't been forced into WWII.

It is complete and total bullshit, but it is the kind of mental gymnastics a lot of major east Asian powers have when it comes to their own history. China does a decent job of hiding how Mao's reforms during the Great Leap Forward/Cultural Revolution killed millions of his own, and South Korea vaguely acknowledges how most of its leaders were just as bad as the Kim dynasty up north when it came to political reforms/policy.
