Hated Tropes (Hated Trope) The series is good, but the beginning is so embarrassing that many people give up there.

Dan Da Dan

The beginning of Dan Da Dan is notorious for starting with aliens trying to impregnate Momo in the first episode; however, despite such over-the-top moments, the rest of the series doesn't feature many scenes like that

Ijiranaide, Nagatoro-san

Despite a premise that is off-putting—given that the girl bullies her romantic partner to the point of making Naoto cry early in the series—their relationship evolves beautifully; the teasing becomes less cruel over time, eventually turning into a rather sweet romance

Uma Musume Pretty Derby

Someone on the production team had the audacity to have the trainer start meeting up with Special Week like that—even though, in reality, he is a good trainer who doesn't usually treat the girls that way.

Re:Zero probably. Subaru is so unbearably cringe for like half of season 1 and I expect that it makes some people quit. And honestly, I understand perfectly.

310

u/Artistic-Victory1245 Jul 18 '26

The moment when Subaru names himself Emilia's knight in front of real knights is probably one of the most cringeworthy moments in the series.

233

u/Frost-King Jul 18 '26

Looking at the series from the in-universe characters’ perspective Subaru must be so confusing. One moment he’s pulling THAT cringe shit and then like a DAY later he personally plans out an assault on an eldritch horror that everyone just tries to avoid because attacking it is so devastating to not be worth it, an assault that leads to the whale’s death, and then like a week after that he personally kills one of the Sin Archbishops of the Witch’s Cult.

148

u/Miclash013 Jul 18 '26

Subaru must seem like he's literally being possessed. I don't blame characters for not trusting him at all.

76

u/OTARU_41 Jul 18 '26

they think he has some sort of great intuition, and he was once a member or victim of the witch's cult since he has their scent and goes into random panic attacks and trivia about them

26

u/Layton_Jr Jul 18 '26

Depending on how much information about Subaru you have, he is:

  • a victim of of the Witch’s Cult whose Name has been eaten by the Archbishop of Glutonny
  • one of Petelgeuse's Fingers who defected
  • the missing Archbishop of Pride who wants the Witch of Envy ’s lookalike to win the Royal Selection

4

u/CompetitiveAd4732 Jul 18 '26

Can i know which characters thought about the second and third theory?

4

u/Layton_Jr Jul 18 '26

Subaru is clearly the Archbishop of Pride who decided to betray the rest of the Witch’s Cult for an unknown reason (his Authority allows him to see the future in a way reminescent of Stargazers)

He's serving under the Witch of Envy's lookalike, has a spirit contract with a Great Spirit created artificially by the Witch of Greed, can remember people whose name have been erased by the Archbishop of Gluttony, recovered in a day his memories that had been eaten by the Archbishop of Gluttony, brainwashed the Archbishop of Gluttony into becoming his adoptive daughter, got one of the Beloved Children (assassin group with the Archbishop of Lust as the leader) to become his adopted daughter, is able to see the Invisible Hands of the Archbishop of Sloth, is a valid candidate for the Archbishop of Sloth’s possession technique and he figured out a way to bypass the Archbishop of Greed’s invincibility despite the Sword Saint failing in the task. Oh and don't forget, when a Sin Archbishop dies he inherits their Authority

95

u/BookkeeperPercival Jul 18 '26

Someone made a full cut of the show, only from the "canon" runs of Subaru's respawns. They cut out every life that doesn't progress events, and the end result is that he looks fucking INSANE.

16

u/AnamiGiben Jul 18 '26

Do you remember the video's name?

11

u/Takiro Jul 18 '26

Any place I could watch this without having to torrent it?

9

u/Severe_Gas_4283 Jul 18 '26

There is a link to a google drive somewhere on reddit. You can probably google it. it is only season 1 though I don't know if anyone made any more

3

u/PeterAnthony_Jackson Jul 18 '26

That's kinda why I can't watch it as it airs, I'm a season or two behind now, I tried again weekly with that bandaged woman in the town square.

Couldn't do it, needed to binge, but I just wasn't in a rush, because the whole point of the show is "lets just loop the same parts over and over with different outcomes" so instead of Endless Eighting it, I just powered through.

But a cut like that I could probably enjoy. Just like "so I'm a Spider" where it cut out the humans.

40

u/JancariusSeiryujinn Jul 18 '26

There's a fan edit that cuts out everything except the final loop of each part and Subaru looks like an absolute fucking whacko

Definitely not, you're missing out on a ton of character development and information, including some of the best scenes in the show. You're getting the pay-off without the set-up.

It would be a funny way to watch the show, just definitely not a good one.

2

u/Severe_Gas_4283 Jul 18 '26

Absolutely not, even when I watched it after finishing the series it is just not good. It's interesting sure, but man it's a slog.

2

u/JancariusSeiryujinn Jul 18 '26

Uhh... Maybe? It's season 1 only (or at least when I watched it was cause that's all that was out). I guess it depends on what you like or why you didn't watch more to begin with. I think if you were really trying to follow the plot you'd miss stuff, like when Subaru is fighting Sloth you'd have no idea why certain things were happening

6

u/NoLegs02 Jul 18 '26

A week? Try a day. Pretty sure the assault on the Witch's Cult takes place the next morning after the Battle with the White Whale

2

u/tzomby1 Jul 18 '26

lol yeah that's exactly when I dropped it

49

u/PreTimeskip Jul 18 '26

Isn’t that the point? Subaru is an immature cringe idiot, and the show is showing it

65

u/Pofwoffle Jul 18 '26

If somebody punches me in the face it's safe to assume that the point of their action was to punch me in the face... but knowing that doesn't really make it any less annoying that they just punched me in the face.

3

u/PreTimeskip Jul 18 '26

Yeah i agree. I guess i just really enjoyed it

3

u/Pofwoffle Jul 18 '26

Oh to be clear I did too, the only reason I'm not up to date with the series is that I have ADHD and got distracted by different shows. But I can also understand why some of the early stuff is just too much for people, especially since some people have a really strong empathetic embarrassment reaction.

6

u/RumpledForskn Jul 18 '26

Sure? But his inability to share, and the inability for anyone else to know, that he can relive the same events by dying means that he goes from this unconfident moron, into a leader and strategist and killer of archbishops in like two weeks.

1

u/HMWWaWChChIaWChCChW Jul 18 '26

It’s a great moment of character development. He’s in this world and he’s acting like it’s a game and he’s the main character. So he puts himself in this situation and declares himself a knight in front of real knights and gets a harsh lesson for it.

49

u/TakerFoxx Jul 18 '26

I kind of love it though, as it's treated like an actual fuckup on his part, one that Emilia rightfully chews him out for.

But at the same time, given how many times he's had to watch everyone around him get horrifically murdered due to some plot that they had no way of predicting, it's understandable why he was acting that way. It was still a fuckup, but you can follow the thread.

28

u/Lewa358 Jul 18 '26

Yeah, I loved re zero s1 because the MC does a lot of stuff that many similar anime would reward him for, like putting his various love interests on pedestals thst they didn't ask for, and there are whole episodes dedicated to said love interests just tearing him down for that behavior, and he pays attention and learns.

2

u/Confident-Quantity18 Jul 18 '26

I couldn't escape the feeling that he doesn't learn because he wants to, he learns because he is forced to. If you have to be tortured into becoming a better person, are you really good?

7

u/Lewa358 Jul 18 '26

"What is better - to be born good, or to overcome your evil nature through great effort?"

-- Super Mario or something idk

1

u/rockinherlife234 Jul 18 '26

We have other routes showing that Subaru is capable of ignoring those lessons and going off the deep end, at the end of the day, he still chooses to learn and be better, even if he's nudged in the right direction.

6

u/SergeantRayslay Jul 18 '26

Yeah. Like, I know it's still annoying, but the whole point of that arc is that it's Subaru at one of his lowest points, believing he's entitled to all sorts of things. Even I struggle to get through those episodes on rewatch, but I feel like they serve such an important point in the story that it's not really "annoying"

9

u/cpMetis Jul 18 '26

One of the only things I skip in rewatches.

It's unfathomably important for his amazing character, amazing arc, completely understandable once you know his life story, and the crux of multiple of the best relationships in the show and the starting point for one of the best arcs in the show.......

....it is also still by it's nature the most cringe thing ever. And I just can't rewatch it. I let my memory stand in for reliving it.

2

u/danoB003 Jul 18 '26

And at same time it's THE breaking point from which he's forced to do some introspection and lock in, slowly but surely leading to him becoming one hell of a reliable guy and I'd go as far as calling him genuine badass.

2

u/ProfessionalRandom21 Jul 18 '26

i skipped past that scene, it was so cringe

2

u/HMWWaWChChIaWChCChW Jul 18 '26

Rewatching the show rn, watching with my son for his first time. I warned him way in advance that one episode gets so cringe and he still didn’t expect how bad it was.

On the other hand, it was way more bearable the second time knowing what was coming. I think knowing he’s about to get his ass beat helps lol.

1

u/Independent-Couple87 Jul 18 '26

In some ways, Subaru is similar to how I would imagine a younger Jorah Mormont.

Emilia certainly looks like a Targaryen.

https://giphy.com/gifs/gw3BUOKdPKGMllU4

1

u/fallenKlNG Jul 18 '26

I think this was around the time I dropped the show. I just couldn’t stand watching the mc anymore at this point

0

u/TheRealSmolt Jul 18 '26

Dropped it at that moment and never looked back.

9

u/Lewa358 Jul 18 '26

The next episode is just Emilia ripping him a new one for that shit too, it's great

98

u/OTARU_41 Jul 18 '26

Tbh Re:Zero doesn't work as well if he's not like that. What sets Re:Zero apart from other Isekais is that the lesson isn't "in another world, your weird habits would be ok!", the lesson is that regardless of where you are you can change and evolve as a person

108

u/the_living_myth Jul 18 '26

it’s hard to watch at times, but i wouldn’t want it changed. that’s like half the point of the story

11

u/mischievouslyacat Jul 18 '26

Yes I absolutely love how painful it is when he yells at Emilia about everything he's done for her when she's basically just met him and he sounds like an absolute lunatic

47

u/ElGodPug Jul 18 '26

yep. Subaru's development is only so good because we see him at such low points as an individual

hell, even on season 4 the scene with the knights is brought back up and given more context. I would never want to lose it just because "it's cringe"

58

u/handledvirus43 Jul 18 '26

Yeah, he was horrible for that first half of season 1 and I only started to like him once he actually realizes the seriousness of the situation and starts to learn.

41

u/MXC14 Jul 18 '26

Given the series started in like 2014, the idea of a main character being annoying or not being treated like the savior was a sharp contrast compared to the other isekai of the genre. If you've struggled to get past those episodes, trust me when I say it will get better.

28

u/Greg-theseatreader Jul 18 '26

Watching episode 13 with no skipping forward is a Herculean task bro

1

u/LaxerjustgotMc Jul 18 '26

watching episode 13 without skipping or pausing is torture

15

u/NotRealNeedOfName Jul 18 '26

I watched EP 1 and dropped the anime on my first watch. I thought Subaru was so unbearably cringe I couldn't handle it. Thankfully I decided to give it another chance because otherwise I would've missed out on peak.

2

u/ItsDanimal Jul 18 '26

In trying to get my daughter to watch it and she absolutely hates him."This is his 3rd time, why hasn't he figured it out yet?!"

We are trying episode 2 tonight. (I'm caught up on the anime)

10

u/Mande1baum Jul 18 '26

The show somewhat tries to convey it in the anime, but my understanding is that his brain goes into pretty serious shock including mental block mode every time he dies and that carries over whenever he restarts. So it messes with his memory, feels dreamlike, or like a premonition. It's not an experience a mind can properly process. Not to mention the general whiplash. The show is more "show don't tell" and I think it does pretty well with Subaru's blank expressions and how long it takes to recollect himself, but like a LOT in the show, it can be easily missed since most anime don't try to convey as much visually so people don't expect or look for it. Not sure if that description would help. But Subuaru being impulsive, single track thinking, and not thinking things through in general is also part of his character and arc.

1

u/rockinherlife234 Jul 18 '26

What you need to understand with Subaru is that while he's got his own brand of protag energy, he's still just a scared kid in an unfamiliar land chasing his fantasy".

When you see a "stupid" moment with Subaru, try and look past the surface he's projecting and think about what's going on in his head, he's like everyone else in that he'd rather go into denial about a horrible circumstance than accept the awful truth of it, he's not dumb, just scared.

7

u/The-Batphone Jul 18 '26

This is the reason why when, in the most recent season, Subaru loses his memories, was such a terrifying moment for me.

Honestly haven't watched any episodes since that one, though I know I will. That just happened to be the episode where I caught up, and I'm really bad at staying caught up.

8

u/cry_w Jul 18 '26

I still don't get that. Even back when I first watched the show, I didn't really see what was annoying about him, and that feeling has only become more stark as I've watched the story since and gotten the full context of who he is. Even at his worst, I've just felt bad for him.

3

u/NarwhalPrudent6323 Jul 18 '26

The thing that's most annoying about Subaru is how insanely stupid he is. It's like watching someone play a video game and purposely make all the wrong choices, repeatedly. I don't feel bad for him, because if he spent fifteen seconds thinking about half the situations he's in that result in him dying, he just wouldn't die. Instead he blunders around acting like a brick wall with a learning disability.

Does it get better? I don't know. If a character takes an entire season to get less unbearable, it's not a show for me.

3

u/Prince_of_DeaTh Jul 18 '26

an example of him being stupid?

-1

u/NarwhalPrudent6323 Jul 18 '26

When he gets Isekai'd, sees a random gang of thugs, decides "I must have super powers because reasons!" And then promptly gets killed. Y'know, immediately in the first episode? He hadn't gotten any better half way through the first season, so I stopped watching.

6

u/Prince_of_DeaTh Jul 18 '26

You've actually got the timeline a bit mixed up here. In the first episode, Subaru doesn't die in that alleyway at all. That whole scene is literally just a joke poking fun at generic isekai tropes where he thinks he has cheat powers, gets his butt kicked, and then Emilia has to save him. The only time he actually dies to those thugs is in episode 2, and that's because he's in a massive panic trying to save Emilia and tries to just push past them, not realizing one of them pulled a knife.

But honestly, Subaru really isn't dumb. He's just a normal kid who is constantly terrified and traumatized. Expecting him to play some flawless video game run when death is actually agonizingly painful is just unrealistic. When he's not actively having a panic attack, he's actually incredibly resourceful. He's the one who figures out the White Whale's mechanics, outsmarts the Witch Cult, and manages to negotiate a massive political alliance with other candidates who have way more power and experience than him. His entire character is about him learning from his mistakes and adapting, which is the exact opposite of being a brick wall.

2

u/LaxerjustgotMc Jul 18 '26

because he just got isekai'd. he reads alot of mangas and is familiar with the format of an op isekai protag and thinks he would have some op powers.

he gets so much better in the 2nd half of season 1, its when you start liking him as a character. he will continue to grow as a person. oh and that complaint about "thinking about how to avoid death" or smth, he literally starts doing that very early into the anime, like arc 2 or smth. he just gets more wiser and thinks more critically about avoiding death as the series goes on.

also, he didnt get killed during the part you mentioned. he's killed at the end of the episode when he got suddenly slashed by elsa out of nowhere alongside Satella, he couldn't have seen that coming

also remember, subaru's 17 years old. dont expect him to become the hero of the kingdom after a few episodes. it takes time for him to fullt mature

1

u/LaxerjustgotMc Jul 18 '26 edited Jul 18 '26

because if he spent fifteen seconds thinking about half the situations he's in that result in him dying, he just wouldn't die.

you turned off your brain when watching the anime, and miss 50% of the dialogues and story.

Does it get better? I don't know. If a character takes an entire season to get less unbearable, it's not a show for me.

if you bothered watching the entire season, you would know that's not true.

Instead he blunders around acting like a brick wall with a learning disability.

you went into this anime expecting a flawless protagonist. if he has a learning disability, he wouldnt have gone past arc 1

It's like watching someone play a video game and purposely make all the wrong choices, repeatedly.

its called trial and error, he's trying things out to see if it would kill him or not. like the time he just stayed as a guest at the mansion and left after his time was up, thinking his cause of death was because of him staying in the mansion. he died, and he learnt that it wasnt that either. he gathered clues around the mansion, asked beatrice multiple questions, especially about the curse that caused his painless death. ur blinded by the way he acts, the way he talks, moves and interact with others, so much that you didnt even notice that he has been gathering clues and trying to think of shit to try to avoid his damn death.

you know, before you talk shit about this anime like you understood it, maybe actually WATCH the anime properly. try to figure out all of the characters' intentions, try to understand them, make theories as to why those things happen.

3

u/Animaloffear56 Jul 18 '26

Honestly I didn't even mind that so much as I got repelled by everyone shitting on him when he was actually trying to improve and be a better person towards the last couple episodes of the season. Like blame him for the shit he actually did, not for everything going wrong independent of him and him happening to have been an ass recently

3

u/TheSusBird Jul 18 '26

Try to watch episode 13 without fasting forward (impossible)

3

u/welshy1986 Jul 18 '26

Yup, I crawled through the first season and the only reason I stayed is because the show has the single most interesting use of an absurdly overpowered character, how Subaru manipulates Reinhart is so interesting that it almost overshadows the rest of the series and the show does it in such cool ways as to remind the viewer that no, just because this dude is basically Jesus you cannot always lean on him to solve every problem.

1

u/rockinherlife234 Jul 18 '26

It also shows that even if Subaru was that op, it doesn't solve everything, whether it's a bullshit op authority or emotional trauma, not everything can be solved by hitting it with a big stick.

3

u/QueasyPhil Jul 18 '26

I dropped it for that reason. I dont have enough free time to spare on an anime to hope the unlikable protag gets better. If I know that they do, then I'm happy to stick it out.

So thanks for mentioning that, Ill go back to it. The premise really was interesting.

3

u/Federal-Fondant-671 Jul 18 '26

Unlike everything else I have seen here so far, this is the only time where it was a good decision to do that.

2

u/LogDog987 Jul 18 '26

It causes me unbearable suffering to watch but I wouldnt trade that episode. The characters and their journeys are the lifeblood of the show

2

u/PIELIFE383 Jul 18 '26

I tried like three times. I kept hearing it gets better after like episode 20 or something but the way he acts is impressive at how much it makes someone not watch the show. Ill probably try in a year again

4

u/RoeRoeYoboat Jul 18 '26

3

u/MayorMaccaroni Jul 18 '26

Nahh, thats actually His Bro, Natsuki Daniel

3

u/RoeRoeYoboat Jul 18 '26

Aw Fuh nah I got caught being a larper😔😔😔😔

6

u/MayorMaccaroni Jul 18 '26

It's okay, Daniel isn't just the sin archbishop of birthdays, but also of forgiveness and aurafarming

1

u/Kasaneru_san Jul 18 '26

And afaik he doesn't act like this in novel most of the times and is more mature.

1

u/Smaug55 Jul 18 '26

It’s one of my favorite animes of all time and I still can’t get through episode 13 without fast forwarding

1

u/Keiji12 Jul 18 '26

I don't agree that it's for half of season one, he acts realistically for anime standards and only get really cringe for a few episodes where he's acting as self appointed Emilia's knight and finishing after Rem's speech, the bed scene where he lashes out filled me with so much second hand embarrassment that I couldn't finish the episode in one go though.

1

u/EmpressClaraB Jul 18 '26

I was the opposite, I dropped it after I think season 2 because it icked me tf out

1

u/LaxerjustgotMc Jul 18 '26

episode 13, where those who couldnt handle subaru would drop and those who could would stay for the peak thats coming

1

u/Marshal749 Jul 19 '26

As a massive fan of Re:Zero's worldbuilding, lore, attention to detail and all it's interconnectedness he is still cringe asf just slightly less so. Honestlly this series would be a 11/10 if it dropped the fanservicy bullshit and making every 2nd character design a little girl to make jokes about it. It's really off putting and that's honestly the only reason why i avoid watching the newest season

1

u/Hugs-missed Jul 18 '26

I had to drop it only a bit in, planning to go back in with my second hand embarrassment defenses raised to a higher level

1

u/Sulipheoth Jul 18 '26

Honestly, it was season 3 and endless nonsense in the enchanted forest that finally saw me checking out.

rezero's cringe is not sexual cringe, its literal soul pissing fucking cringe holy crap. I read the early volumes with a cockraoch in my stomach, if i were to explain it, its pick me cringe. But it's really good if you're not looking for power fantasy (there's none, even in later volumes)

1

u/LaxerjustgotMc Jul 18 '26

rezero doesnt use sexual desires as plot points.

subaru starts as a cringy 17 year old teenager shut in who's awkwardly social in the new world, to an amazing guy who's has done multiple good deeds for the kingdom and is very well respected amongst even those powerful ones. yes, he does mature as the story progresses. no, his love for emilia isnt sexual, his love is genuine. and he's not a pervert.

-2

u/KoolKoolKoolio42 Jul 18 '26

I dropped the show after Season 2 because it felt like the plot was more eager to see how much they could kill Subaru over actually progressing anything.

6

u/Siilan Jul 18 '26

Subaru died the most in season 1. He only died 6 times in season 2, and season 3 had even fewer deaths. Season 4 isn't finished yet, so we'll see how that turns out. Season 2 was a slower season, as it was focused on fleshing out Emilia and Beatrice, but the progression in the latest two seasons has been great.

1

u/KoolKoolKoolio42 Jul 18 '26

If you say so. I'll stick with Konosuba as the main isekai I care about.

0

u/REXYBOI010507 Jul 18 '26

Literally quit after episode 1, it was actually unbearable watching him

0

u/netorarekindacool Jul 18 '26

I only watched season 1 and he never stopped the cringe. So sad that this thing became a hit but no game no life sitting there with only 1 season

-6

u/Secretlylovesslugs Jul 18 '26

Re:Zero doesn't improve though. Pretty consistently bad if not worse by the end of the 1st season. Ep 18 has some of the most definitive 'nothing will change' moments in a story I've ever seen. The main character blows and the supporting cast is worse.

-7

u/Klecktacular Jul 18 '26

Re:Zero has a great premise that's wasted on the most annoying cast I've ever seen. Subaru is weapons-grade cringe and nearly every other character is a focus-tested isekai trope designed to sell figurines. Anastasia and Julius are fine, at least.

0

u/EchoKipKipKip Jul 18 '26

I've tried multiple times to get into this show because everybody keeps saying how good it is. I've quit 3-5 episodes in every time and all I read online is things like, "It gets better after episode 13!" "It picks up after episode 15!", etc.

Look, I'm sure it's great. I'm not going to sit through an entire season of a character I hate because he eventually faces an "epic deconstruction" or however people want to describe it. Especially since the first few episodes are pretty good and then it takes a hard turn into him waking up in a mansion and perving out over everybody.

1

u/rockinherlife234 Jul 18 '26

"It gets better after episode 13!" "It picks up after episode 15!

No? It generally reaches it's peak around episode 15, if you're not enjoying it before that point, you won't like it after unless your problem was only with Subaru's acting out.

I'm not going to sit through an entire season of a character I hate because he eventually faces an "epic deconstruction"

That's how it works though, you need to see them at their lowest moment so their redemption and development feels earned, no one should deny that it's hard to watch his insecurities get the better of him, but that's what makes it so much better when he flips everything on its head.

hard turn into him waking up in a mansion and perving out over everybody.

Sorry, what doujin are you reading? Because he never pervs, he makes like one joke about the maids being twins, the "perv" thing is a joke that ram makes against him as part of her teasing him.

-6

u/SirChrisJames Jul 18 '26 edited Jul 18 '26

To be fair, Re:Zero is a hard watch because the protag sucks and the pacing is awful. It's like having somebody tell you to let them shit in your mouth because, pretty soon, they'll replace their asshole with a whipped cream nozzle.

Edit: I can tell by the downvotes that I killed it with this simile.

1

u/EchoKipKipKip Jul 18 '26

You pretty accurately described how I feel about this anime. Fans telling people to just power through an entire season's worth of episodes because it gets better is a really hard ask.

1

u/rockinherlife234 Jul 18 '26

Whoever is telling you that is either fictisous or dumb, the only time anyone should ever tell you to skip is episode 13, and even then, that's not a good idea because you'll miss so much important context.

Every episode of the 1st season is important.

1

u/EchoKipKipKip Jul 18 '26

It's the opposite, people tell me to not skip any part of the first season. I don't want to sink hours into an anime that I'm actively not enjoying or spend what would be an entire season of another anime just cringing the whole time.
