[Request] How hot would the surrounding air and rock Frodo and Sam are on be with all that lava from Mount Doom be? Lord of the Rings Return of the King.
Something I’ve always wondered was could people actually survive being on that rock with all that lava spilling down the mountain side? From what I see lava can be anywhere from 1300 degrees Fahrenheit to 2200, I mean that’s hot right? I’d expect the heat to rise up and warm the air around them and even more so the lavas heat would conduct through the rock they’re on and burn them. Could they even breathe the air? I know it’s fantasy and all but let’s put people in that exact scenario in real life.

I wonder how powerful is this landspout that managed to lift the blue car and hit another car in Malaysia? I'm just curious because we Malaysian never had any Tornado like situations.

[Request] In the movie Passengers would the rest of the crew have enough food after the two main characters ate their fill for 90 years prior to any of them waking up?
There are 5k passengers and 258 crew members in the ship. The voyage was to be 120 years total with 4 months prior to landing that the passengers were to be woken up. The main 2 main characters wake up about 90 years ahead of schedule.
They were about early to mid 30s it seemed. If they lived to age 80, how much of the ship's food did they likely eat if the ship had enough food stored for 5k passengers to last about 4 months, maybe 5. Both of them together gave them access to the full spectrum of food.
Would they have made a large enough dent by the end that when the crew did wake up there would have to be some tighter rationing or maybe even not enough food at all?
Update, it would 5,255 total people for those 4 months since the 3 characters in the movie all woke up too early, but the third one died within a few days so his consumption negligible.
It’s also not confirmed if they had children but I would assume that would change things as well if they did.

[Request] Does the moon have enough material..
…To create a shield thick enough to protect the earth from a gamma-ray burst? Assume we have the mega engineering skill to do this and manipulate its orbit.
I read a story once where a long dead human was resurrected by a centipede and it “well acckshually..”’d the main character about humanity failing to do this as its own race did; I thought someone here might be interested as well.

[Request] : how large would a building have to be before the curvature of the earth would have to be taken into account during design and construction?
There’s a big warehouse/fulfillment center thing being built near my house and every time i drive past it I think about how the curvature of the earth must be measurable across it, though obviously only in millimeters so it wouldn’t impact design or construction. How big would a building have to be to have to take it into account?

[Request] Assume an ideal world with no poachers and 100k elephants of either subspecies, how many years until extinct/too inbred?
It was hard to find a population count that was the same across different sources and reading about minimum viable population on wikipedia still left me confused and without an idea on how to estimate this.. perhaps you cant get a definitive answer just a somewhat realistic estimate
My first instinct was that it'd just be negatively exponential, but in reality you could have a little bit of inbreeding to extend their existence for a while before its too much maybe?
I thought about just setting all 100k to be mature enough to reproduce but idk if its better to assume a more varied spectrum of life stages
And if it makes the math easier we can ignore the temperature-related environmental impact from climate change specifically but keep the otherwise-likely-would-be natural disasters etc
As a sad doomer I will probably dread the result whatever it may be
important footnote to specify: the poachers did not die to natural causes in this hypothetical world

Spinda odds? [Request]
For relevant context, in Generation 3 Pokemon games, each Spinda has a unique pattern of spots based on an internally assigned “personality value”. This leads to approximately 4.3 billion variants- the differences are obviously minute, but nonetheless.
The native shiny odds in game are 1/8192. So capturing a shiny Spinda makes it very, very unlikely that anyone else has that exact Shiny Spinda.
And then there is Pokerus, which has a 1 in 21845 chance of being on a Pokemon.
This said: can someone better at probability math than me calculate the odds of capturing two identical Shiny Spinda with Pokerus?
